Yes you can by creating a group and then dragging the contacts in to it. However, since iCloud, the Edit Distribution List feature has been grayed out. Without that feature, it is not possible to specifically select a single email address for those contacts that have multiple email addresses. A major flaw that will hopefully be fixed.

  • How can I delete all my contacts in Address Book?

I had syncing issues between my Entourage 2008 contacts, my Address Book contacts, and the PowerMac for Blackberry application. As a reference, I have around 5,000 contacts. I have solved the issue, but there is some collateral damage: read on.
Address Book duplicated my contacts two or three times, and it also created around 60,000 empty contacts. I have been able to clean the Entourage contacts, which only suffered from duplication but not from new empty entries.
I tried to delete the Address Book duplicate and empty entries. The easy way out, I thought, was to Select All and delete. It does not work. Given I have ended with around 80,000 contacts, after I Select All, and try to delete, the program hangs, and I have to Force Quit the Address Book application.
I tried to locate the Address Book file where contacts are stored, but I have not found an obvious name that would point to it, nor have I read anything about such file in the different discussion forums. So no success on this.
I have even used scripts in the past for deleting duplicates and merging contacts in Entourage, but I have not found one for Address Book that could take care of the massive number of empty entries with "No Name".
So, is there a way to delete all my contacts in Address Book?

There are two possibilities you can try:
    1. Delete all your duplicate entries. You can try downloading and running this Applescript Remove Duplicates, which will create a group named Duplicates in Address Book, from which you should be able to delete those entries, by selecting the Group, then in the next column to the Right, select all the entries and choose Delete Cards from the Edit menu.
    2. If that doesn't work, you can do this:
    1. Quit Address Book if it's running.
    2. Go to ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook and delete an of these files/folders you find there:
    • ABPerson.skIndex
    • ABPerson.skIndexInverted
    • Address Book - xxxxx.abbu
    • AddressBook.data
    • AddressBook.data.beforesave
    • AddressBook.data.previous
    • Images
    • LastImport.plist
    3. Restart Address Book and see if the default cards are there (Apple card, and your Me card) and if all seems to be working correctly.

  • How do i delete contacts in my mail address book

how do i delete contacts in my mail address book

You don't, if you're referring to addresses that appear when you click the "Address" button.. Mail is just reading from the Address Book application's data. Open the standalone Address Book and you can edit and remove contacts there.
If you want to clear the list of addresses that pop up as suggestions but that are not in your address book, go to the Window menu and select "Previous Recipients". You can edit or clear that list from there.
    Regards.

  • How do I get the groups in my address book to my contact lists in Mail

The groups in my address book are displayed in my contacts list in Mail

Hi. I honestly am not sure how I transferred it (I am dealing with several issues in getting the new iMac set up right now) . . . I think I exported from one and imported to the other. Maybe that is why the notes did not come over even though the contacts did. But I tried your method and it seemed to work so thatnk you very much!

  • How do i CC: a group from my address book

when I reply to a message, how do I pick a group from my address list and have the reply cc:'ed to everyone in that group ?
in the "WRITE" box that pops up, there's no reference to address list and when I start typing the name of the group, it does not come up in the suggested completions.
    thanks
    richard

In principle, open a Cc: box in your email message composition window, and add the "group" (aka Mailing List) to that.
Is it OK for all the members of the List to see and know each others' addresses? Would Bcc: be appropriate?
I don't like the sound of the Mailing List not being volunteered as a possible address. What if you use F9 to reveal the Contacts Sidebar and add it from there?

  • Smart Groups possible in Address Book for PANTHER?

Can you tell me if "SMART GROUPS" is just something in TIGER's version of ADDRESS BOOK or do these exist in PANTHER as well? Actually, I'm not sure what they are, but someone mentioned that I should use them...
    Thanks very much!
    Regards,
    Steve

    Steve,
"Smart Groups" are not available in Panther. This is the Tiger definition of Address Book Smart Groups: Smart Groups are group addresses that Address Book automatically updates with new contacts when they fit the criteria you've specified for that group. For example, if you create a Smart Group for all the members of your swim club by searching for "swim" in the Note field, then every time you add or change a contact and put "swim" in the Note field, that contact is automatically added to your swim club Smart Group.
You can also create a Smart Group by entering a word or phrase in the search field in the upper-right corner of the Address Book window, then choosing "Save Search" from the Action pop-up menu near the upper-left corner of the Address Book window.;~)

  • Still no Smart Group syncing in Address Book???

I do not understand why it is still not possible (after nine revisions of Tiger) to sync Smart Groups across .Mac Sync between two computers. iTunes syncs Smart Playlists with my iPod. Mail syncs Smart Mailboxes. What on earth is the hold-up with Address Book? Can anyone shed some light on this? Smart Groups are a feature that I use every day, and not having them on one system is a royal pain.

Have you sent the suggestion to Address Book developers by going to the Mac OS X tab above and then Feedback? You should also go to .Mac and then Feedack to get your suggestion to .Mac. Only features with enough demand make it into software updates.

  • How do I delete an e-mail from address books

I have an e-mail address in my address book that is frozen. I am having a problem editing it or deleting it.
    What to do?

I have no idea what "frozen" means.
Double clicking the contact or selecting the contact and clicking the Properties button opens the edit dialog box just like a right click does. You can do those on a Mac.
Selecting the contact and pressing the Delete button on your keyboard will delete the contact after confirming the dialog box.

  • How do I create a group in my address book to send and e-mail to multiple contacts

can I set up a group in my contacts / address book to send the an e-mail to multiple contacts?

    Thanks

Yes you can by creating a group and then dragging the contacts in to it. However, since iCloud, the Edit Distribution List feature has been grayed out. • How do I set up groups in my address book

Open Address Book. On the menu bar up by the little Apple icon top left, select File > New Group. Create the group, drag the addresses you want into it.

  • How do I delete everything in my iMac address book?

I imported a csv file but it omitted the email addresses. I want to try importing it again but when I select all it greys out the delete option. I am a newbie to Apple so this is all completely foreign to me after 20 years of Windows......
I also am having problems with Office 2008. It won't import everything from Apple Mail though it tells me it has. I also can't delete from its address book either!
Where can I find the list of software so I can uninstall Office and try reinstalling again? I am having real issues....................!

OK. Then try rebuilding the database that Address Book uses.
To do that, first quit Address Book.
Then open the Library folder in your home user folder (Hard drive > Users > yourusername > Library). If you're using Lion, that Library folder is hidden but easy to get into - while in Finder, hold down the Option key while opening the Go menu, then select Library from the list.
In that Library folder, locate and open the Application Support folder, then the folder named AddressBook. In that folder locate the file named
    AddressBook-v22.abcddb
    and throw it away.
Restart the machine, then open Address Book and test.

  • How do I make Smart Groups in Address Book in iCloud?

I have Smart Groups in my Address Book on my iMac but they don't appear in iCloud. Can anyone tell me how to do this?
    Many thanks in anticipation.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
iCloud.com doesn't appear to support smart groups in contacts (for that matter it doesn't support smart mailboxes in mail either

  • How do i remove my photo from my Address Book entry?

two questions: first, how do i remove my photo from my entry in Address Book? i should be able to click "Edit", select my photo and hit the Delete key and be done, but no - hitting the Delete key does nothing except make the photo blink.
second, i just posted a comment on a web page that i've never been to before, on a site that i've never been to before, and my photo appeared on the web page next to my comment. very creepy. anybody know why this is and how i make it stop? does it have something to do with my Address Book entry?
update: i've consulted Address Book's help and it tells me to select the card then go Card -> Clear custom image, but when i do, that menu item is grayed out.
further update: i've worked around the problem by taking a screen shot of a blank white area of a webpage and making that my photo...but i shouldn't have to do that and would still like to know how one actually deletes one's photo from Address Book. Address Book's help indicates that i'll find such photos in Library/Images/People, but there's no such directory in any of my Library folders. Address Book's help is not being very helpful today.
    tia...

there is actually no way to completely delete an image for you address book entry. you can only change it to something else as you did.
as for the image on that website, most likely it pulled your photo from your webpage on some site like My Space, Facebook etc. do you have a page like that? some sites will tap directly into your webpage and pull your pic from it.

  • Making Groups Not From Address Book

Is there anyway to make a group but not use the contacts in my Address Book--I have a bunch of distribution lists in AOL--I do not want the people to be in my contacts in Address but I want to make a Distribution List--a way to drag them into the address

You could create a temporary group in the Address Book.
    1. Create a group "distro list"
    2. Add the list of email addresses to this group (can be imported from a text file or vCard file as well.)
    3. While in Address Book, select the group and choose menu item File >> Export >> Export Group vCard.
    4. Delete the unwanted group "distro group" from the Address Book.
This will create a vCard file on your desktop. Anytime you want to send mail to this group of users, just drag the vcard file into the "To:" field in your new email window.
If you need to edit the distro list, you can import, modify, then re-export and delete the group again from Address Book.
You could always just maintain your distro list in a text file and copy-paste, but this way at least gives you a somewhat portable archive of your list.
