  • How to recover deleted mail/mailbox?

While trying to solve a problem I had with a mailbox in Mac Mail, I deleted the mailbox. I only took the precaution to save the Inbox in a different location but not the Sent mail. Big mistake. After deleting the mailbox I found out that it also deleted all the mails in the Sent folder, some of which are very important to me.
I looked for suggestions in the Apple Support Communities and found what seemed to be the answer to my problem: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/613328?start=0&tstart=0
This is what I did as Geoffrey Charters suggested:
Step 1: Download FileSalvage (https://secure.subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/Undelete/DataRecovery/FileSalvage) and run it in demo mode. In this mode, you can only explore, which is OK. Set the "free space only" option and start the scan. It takes a while. You should see your deleted .emlx files in the resulting list. Select one and make sure the preview pane contains email headers. That way you'll know you are in good shape. If so...
Step 2: Buy a registration code for FileSalvage, and use the "Register" menu item in FileSalvage to enable the full version.
Step 3: Select all the batches of 100 .emlx file that have been found and restore them to your second disk drive.
And then as David Gimeno Gost suggested:
    1. Create a folder on the Desktop and name it however you want, but give it an .mbox suffix, e.g. Recovered.mbox
    2. Within that folder, create a folder named Messages (with no suffix), and move the messages to be imported into this folder.
    3. In Mail, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Mail for Mac OS X as the data format, and follow the instructions. Note that Mail wants you to select the folder that contains the *.mbox folders to be imported (i.e. the Desktop in this case), not the *.mbox folders themselves.
After running FileSalvage for 4 days that it took to scan all my drive byte by byte, it found the files I needed and I could even preview parts of the messages I was looking for. Everything looked promissing. I recovered such files and stored them in a secondary drive.
This is where the new problem starts. All the retreived files are stored in the secondary drive but when I try to preview any of them using Finder, just a blank page opens. I also tried importing them to Mail as David Gimeno suggested but, although an imported mailbox was created, all the messages there are blank. I can even see in the size column in Mail that every message is 0 bytes.
I know that somehow the information that I need is stored in the files I recovered with FileSalvage, because when I browse through such files using Finder, I can see that they have different sizes. So, the information must be there, I just don't know how to access it.
Has anybody had this problem? Any suggestions?

Appart from solving with a backup, do you know any other way I could get my information back, according to the description I made?

  • How do I delete a mailbox,  tried highlighting mailbox and delete key and nothing?

How do I delete a mail box tried highlighting and delete but nothing

OK, try this. Go to your home folder /LIbrary>Mail>Mailboxes. Select the one(s) you want to delete. Use File>Move to Trash. This has to work.
Also, you may have a corrupt preference file. In the same Library, go to Preferences and find
    com.apple.mail.plist
Move it to the Trash (but don't empty yet, in case you need to put it back.) You will have to restore your Mail settings/preferences upon doing this. If this doesn't help and you need to put it back, you can use File>Put Back when you are in the Trash folder.

  • How to Retrieve Deleted Mail (Mailbox accidentally deleted)

I accidentally deleted an email account (using MacMail) and lost all of the Sent mail from that account. I created a new account with the same information (except a new server), and the old incoming mail is there, but not the Sent mail. Any idea how to retrieve the Sent mail?

Deleting a mail account causes all your mail stored in that account’s mailboxes to be removed from the computer as well, and you were warned that this would happen by the following alert:
    Remove Account
Are you sure you want to remove the <AccountType> account "<AccountName>"?
This will permanently delete the account setup information, mailboxes, and messages from your computer. Messages stored on the mail server will not be affected. For IMAP-type accounts, this is not a problem because mail is stored on the server. If you deleted a POP account, however, your mail has been wiped out from the computer, not just moved somewhere.
To prevent that from happening, you should have moved your mail to custom “On My Mac” mailboxes instead of leaving it in the account’s mailboxes. Actually, using the account’s Inbox and Sent mailboxes for archiving purposes is a bad idea regardless.
If the POP account was configured to leave the messages on the server for some time, setting up the account again would cause any messages still on the server to be downloaded again, just like for IMAP accounts, but this would only work for received mail that has not yet been removed from the server.
If the messages are not on the server and you don’t have a backup (which you should have made before doing something like that), you may try to salvage as many deleted .emlx files as possible with a data recovery tool such as Data Rescue II or FileSalvage (the files to be recovered would be different in the case of Mail 1.x). Of these, the only one I know for sure that can currently recover deleted .emlx files is FileSalvage. Stop using the computer right now if you want to try that, as anything you do with it may cause the deleted files to be overwritten.

  • How do I delete a mailbox setting from my Nokia 58...

    Hello!
When trying to set up a mailbox sync with Outlook, it didn't work and I now have a mailbox set up I'd like to delete.  Only trouble is I don't seem to be able to.  When I followed the guidelines which I have copied below, I don't have the option to delete (step 8. below).
Can anyone help, I'm not having much luck with creating mailbox syncs or deleting them!
    Thanks :-)
If you want to remove a mailbox from your 5800, here's how to do it:
    1. Go to the Messaging application.
    2. Select "Options".
    3. Select "Settings".
    4. Select "E-Mail".
    5. Select "Mailboxes".
    6. Select the mailbox you want to delete.
    7. Select "Options".
    8. Select "Delete", then "Yes".
    9. When the mailbox has been deleted, press the red button to leave Messaging.

    @jenniferclaire
As a last resort provided that you backup essential data first, you could always reset device to "Out of box" state by keying in *#7370# followed by 12345 (default Nokia lock code unless altered by yourself); you would obviously have to forego restoring "settings" to device afterwards.

  • How do I delete a mailbox and still keep the emails?

I recently moved to another state and changed my ISP, so I need to delete an old mailbox that is no longer functional. I don't want to erase any of the email from that account, though, and am concerned that if I delete the account in my mail preferences I will lose those emails, although I have moved them from the inbox of the old account into other folders I created within the mail program. Any wisdom, anyone?
    Thanks-
    mg

Thank you for your suggestions. I've had a few bugs crop up in the process, though. My first step was to move all 659 "sent" emails from the sent box of the old account to the sent box of my current .mac account. I hit command "A" to select all of the sent emails in the sent box window, then selected "move to" from "message" in the menu bar and selected the .mac sent box as the destination. It seemed to take at least 15 minutes to complete the process, and although the sent box of the old account was empty, it appeared when I clicked on the .mac sent box that not quite all of the 659 emails had transferred, missing almost 300 sent emails.
I kept going though, and as suggested, quit Mail, and then made a copy of my user mail folder as suggested, dragging the folder to my desktop while holding down the option (alt) key. Then I reopened Mail, went to preferences, and deleted my old account. After that, I clicked through my remaining "In" mail boxes from the current accounts and the folders I had created in "On My Mac", and wierdly, it seemed every email had disappeared.
I didn't panic because I had made a copy to my desktop, so I quit Mail, and then reopened it, and it seemed everything was there, although still not all of the sent emails. Also when clicking through, Mail seemed to be functioning slowly, and the disappearing email thing happened again. I thought maybe Mail was getting confused between the mail folder in my user folder, and the copy on my desktop, so I moved the copy I had made to the trash, but didn't delete it just in case I needed it again. Then I quit Mail, went to disk utility, fixed permissions, shut down my computer, rebooted my internet cable modem and router, restarted my mac, and when I opened Mail, all my emails were there, including the emails I had moved to folders "On My Mac" from the old account. The old account was deleted, but the Sent box still seemed to be retrieving emails. When it finished, I checked the Sent box, and all of the emails I had transfered from the old account's Sent box were there. Whew.
It looks like Mail is working correctly, all the emails from my old account I wanted to keep are there in my "On My Mac" folders, and the old account is deleted. I'm not sure what happened when all the email in Mail initially disappeared right after I deleted my old account, but I'm sure there's an explanation. Copying my user mail folder before I deleted my old account did save me a panic attack, so I would highly recommend that suggestion I was given in case of problems or bugginess.
    Thanks for your help!

  • How do i delete a mailbox

Somehow, I now have two Yahoo accounts on my laptop (I think it happened when I updateed snow leopard a couple of months ago).  This resulted in double messages to my iPhone, which put me over my data usage.  Aggravating!  When I tried to remove one of the yahoo accounts by "delete mailbox" on my laptop, the mailbox remained and the mail remained but the message contents in both Yahoo accounts were empty!  HELP! (please).

I believe you need to delete the account from within the mail preferences where the accounts are listed.

  • Deleting Multiple Mailboxes All At One Time

When I bought an iMac, the Apple Store transferred (imported) a large number of email messages and from my PC to my new iMac and placed them in mailboxes. I no longer need the imported mailboxes and their content. How can I delete multiple mailboxes (and their content) all at once vs. one by one?

Hi rahimac & welcome to the forums...
Those individual boxes are in this location:
    ~yourUserNameHome/Library/Mail
If you're comfortable poking around in there you can sort and then delete. Close MAIL first and when you're done, they should be gone the next time you open it.
I don't recommend this as a casual approach, however, so if you have any hesitation, just delete one by one inside MAIL instead.
Make sure to have a backup ...and good luck in any case.

  • VIP Mailboxes and Trash

How do I get VIP mailboxes in Mail to show items that are in trash?  When in a Trash mailbox, the items show up tagged as VIP but under the VIP mailbox, they are non-existent.

I could be wrong, but I don't think there is much that can be done here - the design philosophy seems to be "If you put it in the trash, you don't want it anymore."  I guess a workaround would be to make a new mailbox called "Not really the Trash" or something and put all your trash in there.

  • How do you delete a VIP mailbox from the mail app?

How do you delete a VIP mailbox from the mail app?

    From Mail help:
    Make a sender a VIP
To keep track of messages you receive from especially important people, make them VIPs in Mail. You can have up to 100 VIPs.
To make someone a VIP, move the pointer to the left of the sender’s name in the message header and click the star that appears. You can also move the pointer over the sender’s email address, click the arrow that appears, and choose “Add to VIPs” from the pop-up menu.A mailbox for the VIP is added to the Favorites bar. For example, if you make Dad a VIP sender, his messages are displayed in a VIP mailbox titled Dad.
To remove VIP status from a sender, click the VIP’s star in a message. The star is removed and the sender’s VIP mailbox is removed from the Favorites bar.
If a VIP has several email addresses in Contacts, messages from any of those addresses will appear in the VIP’s mailbox.
If you use iCloud Contacts, your VIPs are available on your other Mac computers that use iCloud Contacts and have OS X Mountain Lion installed.
So to remove a VIP mailbox, you would have to remove all its people, and then exit mail.

Please... how can I delete that stupid VIP mailbox that was forced onto my phone with the new software of IO6?

I had started all this with a question back in September. Thanks for the follow up. I have learned to live with the big VIP that simply takes up space on my phone. Oh well, the darn first world problems we have...
On another fun note, my movie recommendation of the week is Flight. I liked it, but I only add that so I can add something positive after starting all this with a negative frustrated venting.
