How do I disable automounting of an encrypted drive?

What I'm trying to achieve is a separate Firefox profile for business and personal use (separate bookmarks, history, etc). I also store these profiles on encrypted volumes. This part works well.
The problem is, when Firefox starts, it always reads data from each profile location, presumably to get some information about the profiles. This causes each encrypted volume to attempt to mount, and a password dialog to come up.
How can I stop this?

It's possible to recover files using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.

From what I have read the extension that handles the USB is
/System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext
It is owned by root so you will need to use that permission when manipulating it.

You can't....without modifying the registry..and still...that would only take effect AFTER a reboot.

It could sound like that one indeed. There are a few options to go for, however it should be fairly easy to find out :)
Create a test GPO and apply to a limited amount of users. GPUpdate and verify that the GPO has been applied using rsop.msc
Then open the application to test and see if it has the desired effect. You might need to change more than one setting, depending on the application and desired behavior.

Cryptsetup - how to disable automounting during boot

I have encrypted partition on usb key, works fine, but when computer boots it complaint that it cannot mount the USB stick (not there usually).
How can I disable this attempt?
My setup:
/etc/fstab:
/dev/mapper/usb-private /mnt/usb-private ext2 user,noauto 0 0
/etc/crypttab:
/dev/mapper/usb-private /dev/disk/by-uuid/ae5.........49b /root/keyfile luks
Notice, I have noauto in fstab, but there must be other rule that attempts to mount the drive.
Problem is not critical, PC goes on with boot without waiting, but I would like to fix it anyway.

In your /etc/crypttab, I don't believe you need to prepend the target name with the full path.
So instead of this:
/dev/mapper/usb-private /dev/disk/by-uuid/ae5.........49b /root/keyfile luks
Use this:
usb-private /dev/disk/by-uuid/ae5.........49b /root/keyfile luks
Notice there is no /dev/mapper/ in the target name anymore. Not entirely sure this will solve your problem, but it can't hurt to try. I was going to mention the "noauto" option, yet you're already using it.

My teachers log into an Xserve and run Entourage for email. I have had a lot of problems with Keychain access. I don't need it (I think), we are not the Bank of America. How do I disable it?

It sounds like you need my Keychain 101 class. I'll give you the quick version.
Your Keychain is an encrypted database where Mac OSX stores the passwords that you ask it to remember. As with any encrypted database, it can only be read with the right key (or password). By default, the password for your keychain (called login) is the same as your login password. When your login password matches your keychain password, the keychain unlocks when you log in.
You cannot unlock any keychain without knowing what the password is. This is Apple's way of making it safe to store passwords inside a file.
Out of sync: So how do passwords get out of sync in a managed environment? 2 main ways: 1) an administrator changes the password of a user. This causes the user's login password to no longer match the keychain password. 2) A users password expires, and is forced to change it at the login screen (prior to 10.4.6). This also causes an issue because the keychain is not unlocked at the time the password is changed. The keychain must be unlocked to change the password that it is encrypted with.
Luckily, there is a great little utility called Keychain Minder (Google it) which aids you in keeping your keychain in sync. It was developed by the friendly folks at afp548.com specifically for this reason. I won't get into details about what it does, but it works really well.
If you want to keep a healthy keychain, change your login password before it expires (it would be nice if Apple had a warning... ) and don't forget it and force an administrator to change it on the server.
As for "needing" keychain.. if you want people to be able to store passwords in OS X, you need a keychain to put them in.

How can I disable server aoutomount?

I have trouble to connect to a wireless network from my computer. I have tried with two different routers and none of them work. The computer does recognize the signal and connects to the router, but I don't have internet access.
I have noticed that the computer is set as "Server". If I choose Network from the Finder window, then enter "Servers", only the icon of the hard drive and my computer's name appear. It seems to be in "automount" mode.
Anyone knows how I can disable this? Or is there another reason of why my wireless connection doesn't work? I have the exact configuration on my laptop (PBook G4), and everything works fine on this one.

I find the usage of Desktops are real advantage when working on my new Macbook Pro.
What is frustrating is the animation when changing between desktops. How do I disable it?
For clarification: I use ctrl + left/right arrow to move between Desktops.

I'm not sure how comfortable you are with the command line, but there is an option for you in the "zip" command line tool. Unfortunately, the version of zip installed with 10.4.7 does not seem to support the encryption option. Fortunately, you can build and install the latest version which does support this option.

How can I disable Firefox from automatically opening on system startup on my Mac - unchecking the "open at login" does not work?

We have Firefox 10.o on our Macbook Pro OS X 10.5.8. I prefer using Firefox as my browser but my husband prefers Safari for now because of a long history of bookmarks and saved information he doesn't have time to re-do. He is tired of Firefox automatically opening when we start up the laptop, and even when we uncheck the "open at login" it still opens at login every time. He is about to uninstall it because of this. How can I disable iMessages from archiving messages and attachments?

I noticed while browsing ~/Library\Messages/ that iMessages has been archiving my messages (Archive folder) and saving attachments (in a separate Attachment folder). Under the settings for iMessages on OS X 10.8.2 Mountain Lion, I don't see any options to disable this. The only thing close to that is already unchecked: Save history when conversations are closed.
Any ideas why iMessages is saving all this information? How do I disable it? My concern is that it's going to keep accumulating data overtime. I don't want to keep having to go back in there and delete those two folders constantly.

This somewhat date back to the way iChat's Saved Chats were once Stored.
At iChat 5 (in Snow Leopard) you could choose to see the last chat - (when opening an new chat with a person you had chatted with before) or parts of the Last Chat in terms of the Last so many IMs.

Since then the management choices of the Save Chats has changed in both iChat 6 and Messages.
Messages stores Chats two ways if they are iMessages.
You can elect to Save them in Messages > Preferences > Messages.
It also store the chat.db and other databases items which includes the Attachment items
The chat.db is the bit that fill in the "history" if you iMessage the same person even if you are not saving the Chat in a formal sense in the App's Preferences.
This is irrespective if your delete the Conversation from the Messages main window.
How big these Databases get obviously depends on your iMessages usage.
Striker's link seems to be about a similar issue on an iPhone (I presume it transfers to other iOS devices) but I am not sure that it is relevant in this situation.

I should have been clear that you cannot change the database behaviour.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
First of all, check that Messages is closed when you turn off your MacBook. This is so important because, by default, OS X will reopen all opened apps the next time you start your Mac.
Apart from that, when you go to  > Shut Down, or  > Restart, in the window you see to restart or turn off your MacBook, unmark "Reopen windows when logging back in". This will avoid that your Mac opens all opened apps the next time you start the MacBook, so Messages won't start automatically at startup
