How do I disable iPhoto from switching to camera on launch?

Right now, iPhoto defaults to switching to the import view when it launches if my iPhone is already connected to the computer. (I've already set the "Connecting camera opens" setting to "No application"... doesn't help... anyway, that's not the behavior annoying me.) I would prefer the default behavior for it to show me my library, or the last photos I was viewing, when I launch the app if a camera is previously plugged in... or to at least let me choose what to do before trying to load all the thumbnails off the camera. Is there a way to modify something to change this behavior?

First of all, check that Messages is closed when you turn off your MacBook. This is so important because, by default, OS X will reopen all opened apps the next time you start your Mac.
Apart from that, when you go to  > Shut Down, or  > Restart, in the window you see to restart or turn off your MacBook, unmark "Reopen windows when logging back in". This will avoid that your Mac opens all opened apps the next time you start the MacBook, so Messages won't start automatically at startup

How do I stop iPhoto from updating itself every time I put a backed up iPhoto disc in to play? Now I quit or force quit iPhoto to stop it happening. Happens every time I install a CD or DVD disc. It cant possibly be necessary every time.

Chances are, that disc was created by an earlier version of iPhoto. iPhoto is trying to convert the library on the disc into an iPhoto 6 library, because the file structure is different in v6. The only fix I know is to copy the disc to your Mac, let iPhoto update your disc as an individual library, then burn a new disc that iPhoto 6 will like.

How can I stop iPhoto from reidentifying faces I have already 'crossed', while still being able to identify and sort new faces.

iPhoto has detected faces of people I dont know, in my 'iPhoto faces' whenever I click the cross in the corner of the face (when sorting faces) the face temporarily disappears, but once I have uploaded a fresh batch of photos (and want to identify new faces) it automatically re-identifies the old photos that I don't want to have to sort again. Thank you, that makes sense (I think!) However, I need to be able to tell iPhoto who the people identified in my photos are, does that make sense? How do I identify the people in my new photos without clicking 'find faces'. I know that button searches through my photos to find faces, but it also gets me to the place where I identify the faces as my friends and family, is there a shortcut to get to that place without clicking 'find faces'? That is what I really need, please help!!

I have gone to iPhoto setting and disabled iPhoto from launching when a camera is connected.
I have also gone into image capture and selected no application as the hidden option for SD card actions when inserted.
Unfortunately the issue persists... two questions: can I do a terminal level disable to prevent iPhoto from launching or can I remove iPhoto from my computer?

I wrote an AppleScript that asks me each time I connect the iPhone/camera/etc whether or not I want to open iPhoto. Usually I just hit return and it doesn't open, but once in a while I'll click Yes to open iPhoto and import videos from my phone. I just did it because it's nice to have a little reminder so I don't go for too too long without importing, but not have it slow things down each time I plug in.
Below is the script. Paste it into AppleScript Editor, then export it as an application. Then set Image Capture to open this app when you plug in your phone. Would love to hear if it's helpful for you or if you modify it to use other criteria to automatically import only at certain times or conditions.

Make sure, you have a current backup of your Mac, i.e. your iPhoto Library. On no account risk the upgrade without a current backup. After upgrading to a newer iPhoto version, iPhoto will need to upgrade the iPhoto Library as well. Due to a current bug, the upgrade may go wrong and leave your iPhoto library damaged, if the system should crash during the upgrade, because of running out of storage or similar.
As Larry pointed out, the current iPhoto version 9.6 requires Yosemite, and the App Store will not offer the last compatible version for Mavericks. To upgrade to 9.6 you need to upgrade to Yosemite as well.
You should finish any book projects before upgrading, because the upgrade will change the themes of the books. So your books may change a bit after upgrading.

Right click on the iPhoto icon in the Dock. Is Open at Log In Selected?
Check your System Preferences -> Accounts -> Log In Items
Is there a camera or anything that your Mac might think is a camera (flash drive, USB Hard Disk formatted to a FAT format, phone) attached to your Mac. If so, disconnect it. If you don't want to disconnect it, set iPhoto to "Do Nothing" when a camera is attached. You do this in the iPhoto Preferences.
