Apple Hardware Test is on a disc that came with the computer, not on the Leopard (or any other OSX) retail disc. The hardware test does not depend on the operating system on the hard drive, so does not need to be updated for newer operating systems.

Why can't I make an alias of my Utilities folder?

I've used admin to open all permissions, but the make alias feature remains greyed out. I can't move the folder to the dock and I can't make an alias of it to put on the desktop. The folder is not locked, user, admin and "everyone" has read and write permission. This is a single user machine, not on a network so file sharing is off.

You are reading it correctly, but the bottomline is that Leopard changed 501 to a standard account when it was installed (archive and install, restore user settings). And the command option key process would not work.
I went through 3 installations of Leopard, and restores from backup and finally have had to isolate and post problems all over the board.
Apple has finally reacted to the problems and begun posting workarounds and solutions in a new series of tech reports. The solution to my problem was a bit simpler. I opened system preferences and changed my standard account to an admin account which it should have been if the installer had done its job correctly.
From my perspective, I'm a fairly proficient Mac user, I think that everyone should start where I ended up - check and see if 501 was changed to a standard account. Fixing that fixed a lot of other problems. My computer was asking for permission more times than a teenager asking to drive the Porsche to the prom. That seems to have gone away also.
But I still can't add the Utilities folder to the Dock for some reason!

How do I disable the itunes auto-update for all users?

I need to know if there is a way to disable the auto-update feature for all users that login to a windows XP computer.
I have disabled it for the account currently logged in as well as copy that user profile to the "default user" profile. However I have about 300 users that do not have admin rights that still get prompted to install updates.
Is there a way to disable the auto update as the default for all users. So that only I get the auto update notifications?

How to fully disable Journals in BPC

Once Journals are enabled in an app, how can they be disabled fully so new dimensions can be added? I already changed the flag in the tblApp table, but more is needed.

I did another test and I think you are right that only tblapp needs to be changed, but with a re-logon of the administration console. After changing the tblapp table I did not re-logon and I got the error that the journals where enabled. But after closing the admin console and a new logon it is also working without removing the jrn tables :). So it seems to cache the journal setting of tblapp on the client or something...

How do I disable journaling on an external drive that won't mount?

I'm trying to fix a hard drive that gives me the "Invalid content in journal" error. I've run the latest TechTool and Drive Genius and they say the drive is fine, except for its crippling inability to actually mount. Onyx and Cocktail won't touch it until its mounted. Ideas?

It's possible to recover files using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.

In FINDER, drag and drop the files into the Public Folder. All Users can then access those files.

So when I migrated our servers from 2010 to 2013. I did not plan well and ended up with this.

I have a Solaris 10 box in a secure environment (no Internet) with Firefox 30 installed. I need to lock javascript in a disabled state for all users. I realize each individual user can toggle javascript with about:config, but that is only a per/user activity. I want to set the value of javascript.enabled to false for all users. Additionally, no user should be able to modify this setting.

Can i make an alias of an iPhoto Library folder?

so i've decided that i'm going to try and tinker with Bridge that comes with Photoshop Elements, but of course, I can't access my pictures from iPhoto in Bridge. I just need to play with both iPhoto and Bridge to see which will work out better for me.

Is that ok? I'm pretty sure I want to make an alias of my Original Folder, but I don't want to corrupt anything. All my pictures are now on iPhoto - my External Harddrive that I used to transfer backup my PC stuff & keep extra pics and music to free up PC space has now been converted to use as Time Machine. So I don't really have anything else with the pictures backed up but that Time Machine.
by the way - Pros and Cons with Bridge and iPhoto would be greatly appreciated. Yes, that would be OK. Just move the Originals copy folder to the Desktop when done. Or you can *Option drag* the Originals folder to the Desktop where the duplicates will be created leaving the Originals folder safe in the library.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

I was wondering if there is a way to make save dialog open up the folder where document originates as default. I feel Like I am wasting a lot of unnecessary time navigating through menus saving certain documents.
Example : I open an Excel document in a folder called 2009. I make some changes and then do a "save as" -- I want it to automatically bring me first to the folder where I opened it, not the last place where I saved to.
I recall being able to set this preference in macs a looong time ago. Now I can't seem to find it. Thank for your help

Sorry about the misgiving adresses, folders and access rights. My question is not about these three (they were just here to tell the story). You're perfectly right to say that in a local network, there's not need to complete the full IP or ".com" name of the PCs (even if it works all the same).
When I said "of course" for the perms, it was just to mean, in the same way, that it's not this kind of problems here.
My question is much more a human/mac graphic interface problem than a network problem. I want the people (as well as myself) to be able to go in a folder on the pc network with a simple click on an smb link in an email message (as they do now on an ftp or afp link).

How can I make iTunes accept an alias as a movies folder?

I love how iTunes organises my media files. But I need to keep my movie purchases on a different, external HD with USB 3.0.
Creating an alias of the folder "Movies" I've copied to the HD and moving the alias back on place into the user's local Library ends in disaster. All movies that have been in the folder before moving it to the new HD are still playable.
All newly purchased movies are downloaded out of the "Movies" folder at top level directory instead on the external HD. I can copy them to the external HD aliased "Movies" folder, but they won't appear in iTunes after dragging the files onto the iTunes window. I get an error message that says, the appopriate folder is missing. What can I do to make iTunes accept the aliased "Movies"-Folder as default for purchased movies?

iTunes is very good, and has been for years, at totally ignoring alises and symbolic links, particularly when another drive is involved. If you want to keep movies on a separate drive you will have to take a humbler approach and drag them to the external drive, then add them from there (hold down the option/alt key while adding to iTunes so iTunes doesn't copy them back to your main drive). Maybe some day in the distant future the programmers of iTunes will realize many users have to use external drives since the ones supplied with the computers these days are pretty small (my 12 year old computer has a bigger drive), and if Apple wants people to buy huge media files from the iTunes Store they need to factor this into design.
