How Do I Disable .Mac in System Preferences?

Is there some way to disable or lock .Mac in system preferences? I need to prevent users from moving data from Mac to .Mac account.

If I had sensitive data on a Mac and I needed to account for it's use and location, .Mac provides an opportunity for movement of data without authorization. I need to be able to restrict .Mac use or disable it completely for each user on a single system.

  • How do I unstick .mac and system preferences for sync?

I've been running 10.4.11 on my powerbook g4 with 3g iphone to sync. That works fine. Today I cannot get system preferences to sync with my .mac (mobile me) account to sync calendars and addresses with my desktop imac which is running 10.5.8. The system preferences seems stuck in the laptop, and I have to force quit to get anything to work. I just had the laptop looked at by mac technician before a trip and everything was ok hardware wise and they checked out other things briefly. The only recent software update was iTunes.

    Alice:
First go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left column and First Aid in main column.
Click Repair Disk Permissions at bottom left.
If that does not help try Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior

I have the same problem. Unfortunately, the troubleshooting link you added has the first step listed as "Verify that FaceTime is enabled in FaceTime > Preferences" which we (the original poster and I) can't do as our Preferences are greyed out. We can't click on them to verify anything.
In FaceTime itself it's verified my apple id (also double checked via the site) and then it says the email is "verified" but then it freezes and after a minute or so it says "Could not verify the email address. Please check your network connection and try again."
After checking the network connection, it still doesn't work. It's rather frustrating as it all worked fine until about a week or two ago.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • How can I disable mac pro OSX 'spaces' shortcut keys? (i.e. CTL, Right Arrow)

How can I disable mac pro shortcut keys: CTL right arrow, CTL left arrow, CTL up arrow, CTL down arrow? Currently, they take me from one space to another. (OSX 10.6) Goal is to use these shortcuts for text editing.

    Hi, Simon.
You can instruct iTunes and iPhoto to save their respective libraries to a different disk, e.g. your second hard drive. You can also move existing libraries for these apps to a drive other than your startup disk.
See the links concerning moving these libraries cited in the "More ways to save space if you have a spare partition or second hard drive" section of my "Freeing Space on your Mac OS X startup disk" FAQ.
    Good luck!

  • Problem, how do i get back my system preference? i think i delete it my mistake.

problem, how do i get back my system preference? i think i delete it my mistake.

did you delete it from your dock or did you delete it completely from the computer
if it has just been removed from your dock all you have to do is go into your application folder and drag the system prefrences icon back to your dock .. if you are running an older version of osx go into finder click applications and find the icon for system prefrences there .. if you have snow lepord you can get the icon in the application folder on the right side of your dock
if it has been deleted completely from the computer use the disks that came with your computer to reinstall it
if your too nervous to do it yourself you can always make an appt with an apple store in your area at the genius bar and they can probably get it back for you

  • Tethering - Ethernet Adapter doesn't show up on Mac in System Preferences

Hi. When I to connect my iPhone 3G to a MacBook Air I have no "Ethernet Adapter (X)" in the Network section of System Preferences. It doesn't auto detect anything, I can't find it under the "+" button.
On another Mac it works. The problem seems to the with this MacBook Air. Seems to be a USB detection problem. It is as if the iPhone is not seen on USB as an Ethernet Adapter.
I have searched a lot on the forums and there is no answer. Can you help?

Hello. I got a similar issue. My iTunes 9 and my iPhone 3GS 3.1 works fine, they sync and so on. I got tethering service from my carrier and it worked fine using USB and Bluetooth with my MacBook. I don't know what happened but now it works only with Bluetooth. The ethernet adapter ˜Ethernet Adapter (enX)" - as shown in http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2756 - is missing.
I can't find a way to recreate that iPhone adapter. When I try to tether thru USB nothing happens (no blue bar in iPhone), no adapter is recognized/created. When I tether thru Bluetooth everything works fine.
Does anyone know how to reset iPhone ethernet config in Mac OS? Thank you.

  • How to set the region in system preferences?

Hi all. I just bought my macbook pro with retina. I choose the country as United States when I set up the mac. After that it asks me whether to transfer documents from another PC. So I transfered my documents to the new mac. There are some Chinese documents.
Now calendar displays the dates in Chinese instead of English. I tried to set the region to US in system preferences and restart the system, but it always change back to "Chinese" in the region tag.
How can I make my mac into a pure English one?
    Thanks a lot!

  • How to get rid of old system preferences??

I recently upgraded (using Migration Assistant) from a PPC G5 to a new Mac Pro. I still have the APC "PowerChute" system preference, even though I don't have the PowerChute software (or at least I have nothing with that file name). PowerChute doesn't work on Intel machines, and it's my understanding that all of that functionality is handled by Energy Saver in Snow Leopard.
So how do I get rid of the PowerChute icon in my system preferences??
    Tks!
    Butch

I assume it's in the bottom line, labelled 'Other" - control-click on it to remove it.

  • Mac Mini - System Preferences Not Responding

    Hi
I'm using a Mac Mini with OS X 10.9.3 software. Today, I finally uninstalled Mackeeper using CleanMyMac Uninstaller and the only discernable difference I have is that my screen saver administered through the System Preferences 'desk top and screen saver' option fails to find the iphoto library. System preferences will continue to respond providing I remain with one of the default 'flurry', 'arabesque' etc. options but as soon as I try to select an option allowing me to link to my photo's, i.e., shifting tiles, the system preferences will hang after about 5-10 seconds. I have tried the 'moving the iphoto library/photobooth/pictures folders from their curent position to desk top and back again' recommendation I have read in other threads, rebooting, disk utility checks, all to no avail.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Many thanks.

You used one worthless scam "utility" to remove another.
Remove "CleanMyMac" by following the first set of instructions on this page. If you have a different version of the product, the procedure may be different. Do not drag the CleanMyMac application to the Trash.
Back up all data before making any changes.
    Remove "MacKeeper" as follows.
"MacKeeper" is a scam with only one useful feature: it deletes itself.
Note: These instructions apply to the version of the product that I downloaded and tested in early 2012. I can't be sure that they apply to other versions.
If you have incompletely removed MacKeeper, then you'll have to reinstall it and start over.
IMPORTANT: "MacKeeper" has what the developer calls an “encryption” feature. In my tests, I didn't try to verify what this feature really does. If you used it to “encrypt” any of your files, “decrypt” them before you uninstall, or (preferably) restore the files from backups made before they were “encrypted.” As the developer is not trustworthy, you should assume that the "decrypted" files are corrupt unless proven otherwise.
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Applications
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-A. The "MacKeeper" application is in the folder that opens. Quit it if it's running, then drag it to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your login password. Click the Uninstall MacKeeper button in the dialog that appears. All the functional components of the software will be deleted. Restart the computer.
☞ Quit MacKeeper before dragging it to the Trash.
☞ Don't empty the Trash. Let MacKeeper delete itself.
☞ Don't try to drag the MacKeeper Dock icon to the Trash.

  • How do I get rid of System Preference panels that are incompatible?

I need to delete 3 Leopard-incompatible System Preference panels. How do I get rid of them?
(I am currently working on making a new clean install, but I'm using an update-from-Tiger installation until I get my applications and preferences setup on this).

Thanks! I knew it had to be something easy; I just didn't try the right key-combination. For me, without Mighty Mouse, it's ctrl-click to equal a right click.

  • How to delete su-elements in "System Preferences/Others"

I'm trying to delete a doubled element (done by mistake) inside an application located in "Other" within "System Preferences"
    More precisely:
    - I've "USB overdrive" app control on this location: "Other"
    - By error, whoever it is, in "Status" window, there are two "USB Receiver" lines
How can I delete one of those?

In System Preferences, right-click on one of them and select Remove.
I'm not sure how that will affect the other. If two status menus are still there, cmd+drag one off the status menu area.

  • HELP. Trying to find out how to reboot or reinstall my System Preferences

It says I'm supposed to hold Control R when trying to do a system reboot, this isn't working for me. A couple days ago I accidentally deleted the System Preferences and I'm trying anything to get it back, does anyone have any suggestions, please?

do you have lion?  : ) you probably do because you are pressing the cmd-r key, but thought I ask.
the easiest way that I can think of that you can recover the System Preferences is by copying that from another Mac.
If you have time machine, it will be there too.  And the 3rd option is Pacifist (http://www.charlessoft.com/).
btw, did you check the trash?  maybe it is still in there : )

    Thanks for reading it...

I don't think this is iServices, as that's quite old at this point and would seem to be extinct. Plus, as MadMacs0 points out, Mac OS X includes built-in definitions for iServices. (Of course, depending on how you downloaded it, you may have bypassed Mac OS X's security. Some torrent apps or other downloaders used for illicit purposes don't properly set the quarantine flag, so Mac OS X's security system never looks at the files downloaded.)
However, any time you install pirated software, all bets are off. It may not actually be iServices, but there's nothing to prevent someone from embedding something malicious in what you downloaded. It may not even be truly malicious... could be legit software used for malicious purposes.
I'd agree with nbar that you should wipe the hard drive clean and start fresh. (I disagree with him that a secure erase is necessary... that will not make your computer any safer than just erasing normally. The only thing that will do beyond a normal erase is ensure that file recovery software can't recover anything from your hard drive.)
If the instructions for wiping the hard drive are giving you trouble, try my instructions here:
How to reinstall Mac OS X from scratch
In the future, never install anything pirated on your computer! That's like handing a known criminal your wallet and trusting him to give it back to you intact (or at all).
