How do I disable updates I don't want?

I getting notifications to update Numbers and Pages. I don't like the new versions and wish to keep using the '09 versions.
The notification that appears gives me the option to install now or be reminded later—I can't find any way to turn down the update permanently or to stop receiving update notices.

Thanks, that's probably what I'll end up doing. I'm a little leary, though, because I had downloaded them earlier and had a lot of various problems, including documents that wouldn't open with either version. That's why I deleted the new ones and went back to the '09 versions.
I suppose I can re-download them, and just leave them unused to prevent any problems. I was hoping there was a way of turning off the notifications, however.

i want to update my phone, but i purchased many apps and music on the phone. it won't let me authorize my computer so i cannot update. i don't want to deauthorize all my computers. how can i find out which 5 computers i have authorized? also how can i update the software?

This is a tedious solution, which is stupid!  And some users report an inability to reauthorize a computer after an "en masse” deauthorization.  I can’t believe Apple doesn’t provide a list or menu to find out which computers you’ve authorized! Obviously, APPLE knows (or else they couldn’t tell us how many computers we have authorized)--so why can’t they give us access to that information about our own computers??!!!
And for an already-authorized computer with a hard drive that’s since been replaced and upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite, would it be recognized as a “new computer” and require authorization? Would its previous incarnation (i.e., with the old hard drive and OS) be considered a separate computer? Some users report they can’t authorize a computer after an OS upgrade because of that. Can’t believe we have to do such a bass-ackwards kludge!

I was looking at the same thing.  People automatically assume updating is ALWAYS good and the developers ALWAYS make things better.  Well you know what they don't and MANY times make things worse and just can't leave well enough alone and have to constantly fidget with stuff once you finally get comfortable working with the app.  The new Facebook update for example IS unstable and horrid.  Apple is SO great, but misses many of these little details like this issue we are running into.
Clearly that's an opinion.  I have seen some changes that I didn't believe were desirable but it has never been serious enough that I wanted the out-of-date rev level.
Unfortunately, the problem is support.  It's extremely difficult to provide support for a product when a user may well have any one of a half-dozen rev levels.  Suppose the latest rev level is 8.1 and you have 4.3.  You're experiencing a problem that has been addressed in various stages in rev 4.7, 5.12 and 7.4.  The support tech's only option is to recommend that you always keep your software at the latest rev level.

  • HT4113 is there anyway to enter passcode after it says ipad disabled?  I don't want to restore it.

My daughter entered the wrong passcode on the ipad and now it is disabled.  Is there anyway to enter passcode now even after ipad says  "ipad disabled."  I don't want to restore it and lose everything.

You can restore from your backup on your computer or iCloud.

You may have to do this several times.
Saw this solution on another post about an iPad in a school environment. Might work on your iPad so you won't lose everything.

‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just canceling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.

Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.

  • Every morning when I awaken my MacBook Pro, I come to find that my Safari browser has been closed. How to fix this? I don't want to lose anything I have possibly typed in a site that I have left to finish working on for later.

Every morning when I "awaken" my MacBook Pro, I come to find that my Safari browser has been closed on it's own. How to fix this? I don't want to lose anything I have possibly typed in a site that I have left to finish working on for later. I checked system preferences and everything seems to be checked appropriately as well as for Safari's preferences.
I am not sure what's going on, because Safari only just recently started doing this and I haven't downloaded anything, nothing out of my regular computer routine. As well, I upgraded to Mavericks when it came out and I have the last version of it too. I can't imagine that Safari would close simply because I don't have or want to upgrade to Yosemite. I am holding off on the upgrade for a bit, because I heard Final Cut Pro 7 can't be run on Yosemite. While I could partition my drive, I really don't want to. Mavericks is fine for right now :   )
Okay sooooo...back to Safari...what the! Please help and thanks for any replies ahead of time!
I Hope All Is Well In Your World :   )

There's an Apple help page on the DNS problem - at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408
The first thing to try is changing your DNS settings - and for that you need to open System Preferences, then the
    Network section.
In Network - click  on Advanced - then the DNS tab
under DNS servers - use the + button to enter two extra lines
    either these, from google dns
    8.8.8.8
    8.8.4.4
    or from OpenDNS
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
then click OK & then 'Apply'
You would need to do that seperately for the Cable (Ethernet) settings and Wireless (Airport)

how do I disable time machine? I want to use my external drive as additional storage. But it mirrors everything I edit. If I remove a document, it removes it from the external drive as well.
I purchased a 1 TB WD passport drive, formatted for Mac. I set it up originally (mistakenly) to backup time machine. I went back and set it to "do not backup"  It still backs up evey document I edit. If I add a document when the drive is disconnected, it automatically adds it to the external drive the next time connect to the passport drive. If I remove a document the same thing happens.
I need additional storage to free up space on my laptop hard drive. This is not working the way I want it to. Help!

Do not backup your startup volume to another partition on the same drive. If the drive fails you have nothing. Always backup to another drive or volume on another drive.
The I/O error usually means there's a problem with the drive. Clone ASAP, then repartition and reformat the main drive. Then restore the clone. Here's the basic process:
You will have to backup your OS X partition to an external drive, boot from the external drive, use Disk Utility to repartition and reformat your hard drive back to a single volume, then restore your backup to the internal hard drive.
Get an empty external hard drive and clone your internal drive to the external one.
Boot from the external hard drive.
    Erase the internal hard drive.
Restore the external clone to the internal hard drive.
Clone the internal drive to the external drive
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears.  Select the icon for the external drive and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    After startup do the following:
    Erase internal hard drive
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your internal hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.  Do not quit Disk Utility.
Restore the clone to the internal hard drive
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the internal hard drive. Source means the external startup drive.
Note that the Source and Destination drives are swapped for this last procedure.

  • How do I disable updates with a silent install?

I have about 400 computers in my company and I have to update them to at least Java 6u30. I have not found a way to then disable the updates silently so the users aren't continuously prompted to upgrade.
There doesn't seem to be an installation switch anymore to disable updates and the registry modification doesn't work either.
There have to be many IT departments that have run into this issue, has any one come up with a solution that works?
If any developers see this: Please, please, please put the disable updates switch back into the installer.

    1. This is a user to user forum. The software update notices cannot be turned off by the average user, so this topic is not likely to be "concluded."
    2. If this can only be changed by Apple changing the behavior of OS X, then this is not the forum to bring that change, only giving Apple feedback about OS X would be the channel for that. The ASC is not a forum for griping. That will get your posts removed and ultimately your account shut down.

    BTW, here are some ideas for dealing with the issue, each has it's drawbacks;

  • Need to UPDATE but don't want to lose rankings, last played, playlists, etc

I need to download the new version of iTunes for some reason, in order to buy an ipod and even to download certain songs in the itunes store. This is very annoying.
In the past, when I've updated my itunes to a new version, I've lost the song rankings, playlists, last played info, etc for over 5,000 songs/videos. It was EXTREMELY annoying. I don't want to lose this info again when/if I update my itunes.
I now have over 10,000 songs on an external hard drive, along with the itunes folder/etc. I am using Windows XP. Can anyone here, anyone at all, tell me how I can update to the new version of iTunes without losing this info?
I will not update if I can't be guaranteed that this will work. I do NOT want to lose all this info again.
    Thank you! Kevin

I have an ipod 30gb then i bought a shuffle just because i wanted one. I had to also update my itunes software for that and it kept everything in there perfect. Ive had to update my software many many times actually and nothing ever was deleted.. The only time something was actually deleted was when i didnt update it when it told me to. Id say youd be safe to update it. If you are really worried about it you can back up your music first!!
