How do I dispose of my e mail account?

My Gmail account crashed years back and I have not had access to it at all. Now I just want to throw it away and get it out of my laptop completely. Awhile back I somehow figured out how to get it off my dock and am now using a Yahoo e mail account instead, but when I replaced an I phone the other day and tried to get it setup with my Yahoo e mail account the I phone adopted the defunct gmail account instead.
I would be so grateful if someone could tell me how to completely rid my laptop of this gmail account. Also, If you know how to get it off my I phone that would be a HUGE help. Thank you so much!

If you were accessing your Gmail account via Mac Mail ...
Launch Mail. From the menu bar click Mail > Preferences then selec the Accounts tab then the Account Information tab.
Select the Gmail account on the left then click - (minus)

You first need to set up a new User Name and Password with your Internet Service Provider (ISP); that is, whoever provides you with Internet access, such as Comcast, AT&T, etc in the US. Alternately you can go on the Internet and set up a new email Account with a new User Name and Password with a public company such as Google's "Gmail" or Microsoft's "Hotmail". Once you have set up your new Account with them, THEN you enter that information into Apple's "Mail" for it to send and receive emails for your new outside Account.

What phone do you have? Is it a company phone? If it is, you may not be able to delete the account.
If it is your own phone, and you no longer need the company email, it should be a matter of finding the account list for the phone (Settings, Accounts - or Settings, Email - knowing which phone you have will help up give you more specific steps) and removing, deactivating, deleting the account.
If it's the Google account that is the backup and app connection for the phone, you may lose much of the functionality until you set up an alternate Gmail address/account.

If you haven't set up a mail account, it will probably ask you if you want to set one up, but here's how I do it.
Press command-, and that will take you to preferences.

I wasn't aware that you could sync other mail accounts with MobileMe, other than their settings. If you are referring to settings, then they should already be set up on your mobile device, any new accounts would need to be added manually.
POP accounts will continue to receive and send e-mail but will not sync (so for example if you delete an e-mail on one device it won't be deleted on the other), IMAP/exchange accounts will continue to function as they always have.
