How do I distort only part of an object?

A newbie, still getting used to manipulating (esp distorting) objects. I haven't been able to figure out how to distort just a portion of an obect.
I have an object (a compound shape) with many anchor points, an object made from a scanned ink drawing. It's a helmet with two intricate pieces that come down on either side. I need to make these hanging parts shorter while the rest of the object remains unchanged, so I want to basically select these parts of the object via the direct selection tool and resize them vertically, but all of the distortion tools I can find effect the entire object.
I tried to separate these parts of the object, distort, then re-attach them to the main object, but then I loose the compound shape and all the "holes" on the inside of the object become filled and don't come back even when I re-compond the shape. Also, this seems like an impractical work around to a simple problem.
What am I missing?
thanks in advance

Wade, as the OP said, intricate pieces, imagine more complex paths, like the straps of this helmet. Otherwise as you suggested, moving up  the bottom points of a shape like a rectangle with no other points between bottom and top, of course will work nicely
I wish Illustrator had a feature similar to the smart content aware scaling in Photoshop where the user can mark the areas to scale and the areas to be preserved.

how do I export only part of a pdf?

    Hi eannablack,
The only way to export part of a PDF is to remove the pages that you want to export. And to do that, you need Acrobat. You are welcome to try Acrobat for free for 30 days. For more information, see www.adobe.com/products/acrobat.html.

  • With 2 devices, how do I sync only part of the library on one device? That is, sync only music and not the podcasts.

Trying to sync part of a library on one device and all of the library on another. Not finding any options to select only parts of a library to be sync'ed. Any help appreciated.

In ipod menu in iTunes, tick the "manually manage music and videos" then select the items that you want to sync. Cheers!

Document>Extract pages but only if you have Adobe Acrobat (you haven't mentioned that as of yet) and only if there is no security preventing modifications and such.

  • How to make a only one spectified type object running at the same time ?

I want to run specified function with java program in unix,AIX environment. But i want only one specified type object can run at this time when i make command "java xxx &" several times at this time.I had used thread but it can not work. I think there are two processes for system so it can not work. Which class or way in java can i use for this problem ? or I use thread in the wrong way.
please help me . thank you everybody !!!
ps:the command "java xxx &" mentioned above, xxx is name of java program ,
& means command run in background.

RMI is a good option you can think of. There is one registry and only one object can be bound to it with a specified name. But if your application is large, RMI calls can really slow down your application.
Another option is to use Sockets. When you load the application check if you can start a server socket on a particular port. If you can, then start the program. If not, another application is already running. So exit your program. The socket you have created will be used only to bind to a particular port. In any system, there can be only one socket bound to a port and this guarantees the single instance running. When your application closes, close the socket too.

  • How can I download only part of my library?

I've started purchasing movies to stream to my television through AppleTV, but I'm running out of space on my MacBook Pro. I'm considering buying a Mac Mini and running it as part of my entertainment system instead of storing the movies on the laptop. Once that's working, I'd like to remove the movies from the laptop to free up disk space. So--
Is it possible to authorize two machines (laptop, Mac Mini) on an iTunes account but then only download purchases to one or the other? If so, how? In this case, I'd like to download purchased movies to the Mac Mini and music and books to the laptop.
    Thanks.

Create a playlist that is used to sync with the iPhone, and manage its content to use no more than the available device memory.

  • How do I move only part of my itunes library to an external hard drive?

I have all my music and movies in the itunes library. I am wanting to move the movies to an external hard drive to save space, but keep the music in itunes on my computer.  I want to be able to play them all through my apple TV via home sharing. I have read a number of posts about consolidating the library and how to access files from an external hard drive, and how to move the entire library to another location, but don't know how to move part of the library.

It is possible but it is not standard configuration for iTunes. You will need to learn details of how iTunes operates in order to stay on top of it and not be back here in a month with a messed up library, or in a year or two when you discover it is a real nuisance when it comes to transferring your content to a new drive.
http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/instant-expert-secrets-featur es-of-itunes-9/ - "To perform a consolidate operation on selected tracks only, simply highlight the tracks you would like the consolidate, right-click and choose 'Consolidate'. iTunes will prompt you to confirm that you want to copy these tracks into your iTunes Media folder."  You will, of course, need to temporarily re-designate your iTunes media folder location as part of doing this.
The above method is a possibility but I have not tested it because I still run iTunes 7.5
Another way would be to copy the files to the external drive.  Delete them from iTunes, then drag the copied files back to iTunes (re-adding them) while holding down the option key.  If you do have anything in a playlist it will have to be re-added to the playlist, and you will lose ratings and date added.

  • How do I transfer only part of my library to a new MBP?

My son just got a new MBP for college. What is the best way to transfer *only his music and playlists* to his new MBP?

The portable Firewire drive is probably a faster option.
If playcounts, etc are important to him or if you want to try and do this with the least amount of work on your part, I would plug in the portable drive to your computer and drag & drop your iTunes folder (not just the iTunes Music folder you find inside the iTunes folder) to the external drive and copy the entire thing.
Now take he drive and plug it into his new Mac. Again, drag & drop your iTunes folder to his Mac's internal drive and copy the entire thing. I would use the default location of his user account -> Music folder.
If he opens iTunes now it should read the entire library in and will appear just like it does on your computer. If not you can force iTunes to see it by opening iTunes with these instructions and pointing it to the newly copies in library...
How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1589
At this point he has everything and now to get rid of yoru stuff and free up his hard drive, he can simply start deleting everything out of the library he is not interested in. Let him do all the work there.
All playlists, playcounts, ratings, etc. are all preserved and you only had to do two things, copy that folder twice.
Let me know if the above presents an issue and we need to do it a different way.
    regards,
    Patrick

  • How can I transfer only part of a playlist to iPod?

This new iTunes is a nightmare.  Because the **** iPod touch is only 16GB, I want to transfer PART of several playlists to the iPod.  I do not want to delete songs from my Library permanently, I only want to have the same playlists on my iPod as I have in iTunes, but reduced versions of them because of the size limitation.  I also want to jkeep the same basic playlist structure as my overall library, but only a portion of each playlist will end up on the iPod.  In previous versions of iTunes, I could drag an entire palylist to the iPod, then I could go in and delete songs or albums from the iPod in order to fit other playlists.  This version will not let me do that.  Please help!

What exactly is the nightmare part? Playlists are the same as they've always been.
Perhaps one idea, after we find out exactly what the issue is that you are having, is to create Smart Playlists, and use those to Sync to your iPod.
With a Smart Playlist, you set rules. You could create a Smart Playlist that looks at you first Playlist, but only includes songs that haven't been played for a while. So after a song has been played, it is removed from the Playlist and only put back again after x weeks, or x months, according to your preferences and the size of the Playlist.
All that happens automatically, at Sync time. So after setting them up, you don't have to do anything except Sync the iPod every now and again, and possibly modify the rules if you find the list is still too large, or now not large enough.

  • How can I play only part of a song (stop the song short) during a slideshow in iphoto and fade into the next song?

I am making a slideshow and I only want to play half of one song and fade into the next. How can I do this?

You need an slideshow app that gives you more control over the Soundtrack.
    Alternatives to iPhoto's slideshow include:
    iMovie, on every Mac sold.
Others, in order of price:  PhotoPresenter  $29
    PhotoToMovie  $49.95
    PulpMotion  $129
FotoMagico $29 (Home version) ($149 Pro version, which includes PhotoPresenter)
    Final Cut Express  $199
It's difficult to compare these apps. They have differences in capability - some are driven off templates. some aren't. Some have a wider variety of transitions. Others will have excellent audio controls. It's worth checking them out to see what meets your needs.  However, there is no doubt that Final Cut Express is the most capable app of them all. You get what you pay for.

  • How can I OCR only part of a long document?

OCR with a pdf file is usually very simple.  Not here.  This is a legal-type document (PDF) with with line numbers on the left and vertical lines on both sides of the text I want to OCR.  If OCR includes the line numbers I will have to spend hours removing them. The left side also include a law firm's name and the bottom has the title of the document, both of which I have blocked out.  (Line numbering was fairly common on pre-printed legal stationery in the typewriter days; most courts have gotten beyond the way things were done in those days but obviously.  It obviously makes OCR a challenge!)  In much earlier versions of Acrobat I used a simple tool called Eraser from a British firm (long gone) that neatly erased anything from a pdf file, such as all the stuff I want to get rid of here, before running the OCR and saving the document as a Word file. That tool does not work with Acrobat 9 and the version I am now using, Acrobat X.  Oh, and just retyping all the text is not an option for me.
There MUST be a way to do this!  Any suggestions?

Redaction will certainly do the job but it is horribly tedious**.  My document is 19 pages.  With 3 such redactions per page I am looking at close to 60 redactions, one at a time.  All the redactions are identical.  That is, the stuff I want to remove on the left side of the page is the same for each of the 19 pages.  Same with the stuff to be removed on the right and the bottom.  I can't see any way to apply my redaction to more than 1 page at a time.  If doing so is impossible is there a way to extract (by cropping or otherwise) the part of the page I want to use?  Obviously it is the same for all 19 pages.  Is it possible that what I want to remove is in some removable "layer" separate from the text in question?
**Even more tedious than the low tech solution I have been using for the occasions when I confronted this problem:
Print a copy of the document
Using scissors cut out the stuff I want to get rid of, a few pages at a time.
Using Acrobat scan the resulting document
Save the result as a PDF file
Open the PDF file and save is as a Word file
Open the Word file and copy/paste the absurdly formatted text into a clean Word document.  This strips out the bizarre formatting due to the scanning process.
Clean up the new Word document, save it and
Finally get to work using the text.
FYI the test I want to extract or get consists of written interrogatories or questions for which I must prepare responses.  I want the responses to include the questions.

  • How do i import only part of a song from a CD

I have a CD which has a defect, by error it has two songs in a track and the second must be ignored, i want to import only the first 3:30 minutes

Well when the audio CD is loaded you can select the track in question, right-click on it, choose Get Info, and go to the Options tab. From there you can check the boxes for Start Time and Stop Time and set the values according to your needs. When you rip the track, only the portion you've specified should be saved to a file.

I use Windows Vista and Microsoft Outlook. After migrating to iCloud, the calendar of iCloud tranferred only part of my past Calendar items to the folder iCloud Calendar in my Outlook. How can I transfer all the entries? In iCloud's site all are there.

If the calendar is on iCoud.com, all you would need to do to get it on your phone is go to Settings>iCloud on your phone, sign into your iCoud account and turn Calendars on.  The iCloud calendars will then download to your phone.
