How do I divide a long h.264 .mp4 into smaller movies?

I have 2.5 hrs of .mp4 movie in h.264 format that I would like to divide into 1/2 hr units.
1. I find it very difficult to get my crops accurate in QT.
2. When I save it it saves a .mov, just changing the file type to .mp4 in Finder renders it unreadable
3. Exporting to mpeg4, which I presume will create an .mp4 file, takes forever
There has to be a better way surely.
Can anyone help? Much appreciated.

Use the Movie Inspector window and some keyboard shortcuts to get accurate "cuts". The left/right arrow keys move one frame at a time. Hold down the Shift key as you tap the arrow keys to expand or reduce your selection. Letter i and o keys set in and out points to make a selection.
Once you have your selection use Command-C (copy), open a new (empty) Player window and Command-V (paste). Save As to make a new file.
Switch back to your longer file. If you no longer need your current selection simply hit the delete key. Repeat the steps above until your made all your "parts".
When you get to your final selection and just Save As to make a new file. Close the older window and make sure not to save "changes" when you close the window. This will leave your original file untouched by these edits.
These new files will be identical to your source but will be in a .mov container. No need to edit the file extension or export again.

  • HT201066 How can I split a long recording audio file into multiple audio files?

    Hi,
    How can I split a long recording audio file into multiple audio files?
    With Windows I was using Nero software, which is not available for Mac. Is there any similar app for free for Mac?
    Thanks!

    Hello ingiorgio
    You can import the track into GarageBand and then split the tracks there. Once that it is done you can highlight the ruler section and then share the song to iTunes to get them separated out.

  • How do I divide a long song file?

    I have two sound files in my iTunes library which are each about 2 hours in length. If I want to burn them onto an audio CD they obviously are too large for one disc. If I attempt to burn them onto a CD in normal CD audio format, will the beginning of the file (I would guess the first 80 minutes) be burned onto the first disc and then will the remainder (about 40 minutes) be burned onto a second disc which I will be prompted to place into the drive or do I have to split the files myself before attempting any burning? How do I divide these lengthy files if that is what I will have to do?

    Thanks NikkiG. The playlist will contain only one track - a 2 hour operetta with no breaks i.e a single 2 hour track. In other words, it will be a playlist containing only one file (song). I assume from your comments that this one file will be split automatically onto two discs when I burn unlike a more normal situation in which a playlist contains a number of items (songs) some of which are burned onto the first disc until it is full and the remainder onto a second disc.

  • How does one print a huge image broken down into small sections?

    I have an image that is 20x20  and I want to print it on sections of my 13x19 transparencys. So I want this big image to be printed on two pages so that when I put the two together it equals my whole image. Thank you for your time.

    Hi. You may want to check out PS plug-in Genuine Fractals 6.  It has a Tiling Feature that divides an enlargement into smaller pieces ready for printing.

  • How do I divide a long recording?Hope that I am in the correct forum. Next

    Hope that I am finally in the correct forum - I've tried ITunes and another Garage Band (wrong one I guess) . Next week I plan to record a 12 hour radio program featuring Xmas music from around the world. This music is virtually unavailable on any recordings as much of it is live performance. The program will be saved into my iTunes library as a single file. Is there any way in which I will be able to divide this 12 hour file (include, delete songs) so that I can save individual songs which I wish to keep? I posted this on the iTunes forum and I was advised to use Garage Band however, I have never used this program and just found out that I had it installed on my HD when I bought my iMac two years ago (version 3.0.4). In other words, I am clueless about Garage Band. I would really appreciate clear, step by step instructions on how to divide this 12 hour file.

    A 12 hour recording is really to long for GB3 to handle. Follow the link to the audio editors that HangTime gave you! There's a free one (Audacity) and shareware programs that will do exactly what you want. Or get QuickTime Pro, you can copy and paste sections of an audio file in the QuickTime Player too.

    Thanks. I just checked and found Garage Band on my computer. I did buy my iMac from an Apple Dealer so it must have been included when I bought this machine 2 years ago. However, I am absolutely clueless as to how to use it and didn't even know it was on my HD. Any specific, clear, step by step instructions on how I divide this 12 hour recording using Garage Band would be much appreciated or do I need to go to another forum?

  • How do I divide a list in one cell into multiple rows?

    I have copied lists of data from a website - some lists pasted as I want them (in individual rows), but others pasted the list in one row.  Is there an easy way to split a list in a single cell into multiple cells so ultimately I can sort all the rows?  I've tried "split the selected cells into rows" in the inspector, but it's not working... seems like it's creating another column instead (?).  Any help would be amazing.

    K,
    I find that Pages has the friendliest Find and Replace dialog, so when I need to swap around the delimiters I go straight to Pages and do the fixes there. Replace whatever is there between columns in the original content with Tab characters and replace whatever is there now for delimiting the rows with the Return character. Since it's sometimes difficult to tell what has been used, just copy it from the content and Paste into the Find field. Choose the Tab or Return character from the Replace drop down menu.
    When you have it all fixed up, then paste into Numbers.

  • How do I divide content bought under my account into new accounts?

    My family has shared one iTunes account and now would like to separate the things we bought into individual accounts.

    This is a shame and hopefullyApple will come out with a solution to it in the future. I am sure there are many like our household that have children too young to have an Apple ID set up in their name. We are currently all sharing one ID but the kids obviously have different musical tastes than we do.  At some point when they are old enough it would be nice to transfer thir music to their accounts in a simple way.
    Right now the only thing I could think of doing would be to burn the music on our family account to discs and turn around and add it to their individual accounts once set up.  Perhaps Apple will come up with a different method in the next 5 or so years (I am sure there is an opportunity for them to make money via  transfer fees - perhaps a fee for a single transfer and maybe a more econimical fee for a mass transfer)

  • Split a long PDF form programmatically into smaller PDF forms

    You can programmatically split forms using LC Assembler service and use the DDX. You could extract page1 from pdf1 and create a pdf, then page2 of pdf1 into a different PDF using something similar to:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <DDX xmlns="http://ns.adobe.com/DDX/1.0/">
    <PDF result="Final.pdf">
         <PDF source="PDF1.pdf" pages="1"/>
    </PDF>
    <PDF result="Final2.pdf">
          <PDF source="PDF1.pdf" pages="2"/>
    </PDF>
    </DDX>
    To split according to Level 1 bookmarks, you can also use the PDFFromBookmarks tag.
    For example,
    <PDFsFromBookmarks prefix="stmt">
         <PDF source="doc1.pdf"/>
    </PDFsFromBookmarks>
    More info is available in the Assembler Service and DDX Reference available at http://help.adobe.com/en_US/livecycle/10.0/ddxRef.pdf.

    Sorry, but making single PDF from many smartforms is not what I want to achieve. I wold like to know how to get one PDF document made by ALC-forms.
    In my example I have many PDF documents. So, how to get (or put) them all in one PDF?

  • H.264 .mp4 vs. .mov

    Hi all,
    I've been been trying to get H.264 videos to play on  my custom video player written in AS3. I've been able to get h264  encoded .mp4 files to work, but if the same file and same codec are in a  .mov container, there is a problem. Namely when i try to jump ahead to  an unbuffered part of the video, the video starts at the beginning  instead of at the desired keyframe. Does anyone know what might be going  on? I can reproduce any code but do not want to bog everyone down. Any  help would be greatly appreciated!!!
    Thanks,
    Cyrus

    I'm not the video pro, but I believe that if you want to be able to skip ahead to view an unbuffered region of a movie, then you are going to need your server to actively detect this skip-ahead move and then send the correct buffer.  If you are just downloading files from some public_html folder, it's probably not going to work.
    You need something like a Media server to let folks skip ahead I think.

  • Read H.264 (.mp4) into labview. Anyone?

    Hi all... So i am really tired of uncompresssing .mp4 videos with third part tools so that i can read them in using ni visions avi functions.  Has anyone figured out a way to read mp4 files in directly to labview?  I saw this DirectShow .NET LabVIEW SDK and thought it might work, but have not started playing with it yet.  Anyone have any solutions?  Thanks so much,
    Dave

    Hello Dave,
    Unfortunately there is no current way of reading in other formats such as mp4 files directly into LabVIEW. They will have to be uncompressed in order to be compatible with the AVI Functions.
    It is expected that upon the next version of LabVIEW and NI Vision, that they might start adding other video formats to be compatible. However, this has not yet been confirmed.
    But I want to encourage you to voice your opinions concerning the need for this by posting it to the NI Idea Exchange.
    R&D regularly checks this discussion forum to get feedback about NI products and particular features that our customers are requesting. The more posts about a particular topic, the greater the chance R/D will address them for a future release.

  • How do you make one long track into multiple tracks?

    How do you make one long track in itunes into multiple tracks? Is there a way to do that?

    I found another solution too through Garageband. I don't know if it was easier, but I liked this way of creating seperate tracks.
    First, You put the long track into Garageband.
    -then you create a New Basic Track under Track Tab-create as many of those as tracks you want to make
    -also make sure the headphones button is lit up under each New Basic Track-this allows it to be a 'solo' track.
    -then you can start cutting music-with the long strip find where you want to split into a new track and drag that half down into each New Basic Track.
    -Once you are done, press Option Z and a purple little triangle will appear up by the measures. drag the triangle to the end of the first track-this allows it when sharing to itunes to just record the particular track you want, it puts a stop/end to that track.
    -then, make sure the track you want to share is highlighted the bright orange and go to share, 'send to itunes'
    -it will send that to itunes and you can rename it in itunes.
    -Go back to Garageband-delete the first track you successfully shared and move the next one up to where that one was. Slide it accross to the left so it is at the beginning, press option Z and move the purple triangle where you want it to be...and you are good to repeat until all your tracks are done!
    I am a very visual person, and this helped to see where I was cutting each track, just another way!
