How do I divide my iTunes library into multiple libraries based on unique Apple ID?

I have one iTunes library on my iMac that started with just me.  As each of my kids and my husband got their own Apple IDs, all of their purcahses are loaded into my library.  They have their own IDs because each has their own phone/iPod/iPad and is responsible for paying for their purchases through their own accounts.  We decided to use only my computer so we could share content.  But Apple restricts each device from having content from more than 5 IDs anyway.
Now, I really don't want my kids stuff anymore though they may want some of my music (which I imported from CDs for the most part).  I learned how to create a new library but I don't understand how to move content into each library.  Would it make more sense for each kid to set up iTunes on his own computer?  If so, how do I move the content from my Mac to their computer, when it's not my entire iTunes library moving?
Thanks in advance for your help

Duplicate the entire library, then in each copy throw away the content that you don't need.
You can duplicate the iTunes library by copying the folder to a new location.
You can switch between libraries by holding down shift as you start iTunes.
iTunes uses the name of the folder as it's window title. You could, for example, rename the copied folder as "Bob's iTunes" and the original as "Alice's iTunes", assuming the two people in question are called Alice and Bob.

  • How do I split an existing library into multiple libraries?

I currently have ~95 GB of music and ~300 GB of movies in iTunes and I’ve stored all of it on an external hard drive. I’m getting a new Mac Book Pro with a 320 GB Hard Drive and I was hoping to migrate the music so it would be stored on the internal hard drive and leave the movies on the external.
I found a page on Apple’s web site (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iTunesMac/7.6/en/15499.html) that says,
“You can have more than one iTunes library.… you could use separate libraries to keep your music on your computer and your movies on an external hard disk.”
However it does not explain how to split the libraries once you’ve already got everything stored in the same place. I have a ton of playlists and other file info that I’m afraid of losing or messing up if I just simply move the folder. The “Consolidate Library” method is a great way to move the entire library from one location to another, but is there an easy way to move only certain parts of the library (i.e. just the music)? Is this change even advisable?
I’ve also tried to create a second library in my current computer (PowerBook running 10.4.11 and iTunes 8.0.2) just to see how it worked and noticed that iTunes Preferences only allowed for one location for the ‘iTunes music’ folder on the ‘Advanced’ Tab.
Put differently, I created 2 empty libraries, A & B. I changed the location of the music folder in the Advanced tab of preferences for B and closed the application. I then opened the application for library A and checked the preferences tab. The location for A’s music folder had now been changed to match B.
I must be misunderstanding something but it appears that you can have 2 separate libraries but they both must have the same preferences and be stored in the same folder and, hence, the same location. So how does that work if you want to continue to add music to the internal and add movies to the external?

    Hi Paulac303,
There are probably many ways to do this, but I know the following two methods work...
First of all, are you splitting your library down the middle, or just want a new iTunes library with a few of the old things in it?  The reason I ask is because that might decide which method is for you.
    (1) If splitting library roughly in half, then copy the original iTunes library to a new name.  Open iTune with the new library name via holding down the option key while opening iTunes --- eventually a menu opens that asks if you want to create a new library or choose an old one.  Choose the copy of your library.  When it opens, delete everything (highlight and press the delete key) you don't want in this library.  Quit iTune and open your original library and delete everything from it that you didn't delete in the copy.  You're done.
    (2) If you just want to add a few of your old things to a new library, then hold down the option key while opening iTune.  Once again the menu opens that asks if you with to create a new library or choose an old one.  Pick Create Library.  Then you can import any of your old songs/movies into your new library.  The actual music media files are typically located in the directory /Users/<yourusername>/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/<artist>/<album>/<song> or perhaps in /Users/<yourusername>/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music/<artist>/<album>/<song>  Sometimes the <artist> directory is under a Collections/ directory, but you'll find what you want.  Just Add to Library the artists/albums/songs you want in your new library.  If you wish you can then open your old library and delete the items you transferred to the new one.
    Hope this helps,
    Switon

  • Is there a way to break my iTunes Library into multiple libraries?

    Hi,
I have a huge library...53,000 songs, 585GB of music.  I'd like to use iTunes Match, so I'm wondering if there's a way to create a different library, where I could copy 25,000 songs from the "Master" library, to have iTunes Match use?
    Any help appreciated,
    Geoff

Check the instructions provided with the player. You may need to convert the music to MP3 first and/or locate it in the Finder.

Put the hard drive from your old computer in an external drive bay and extract the library from it, or see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • I'm dumb, can't figure how to get playlist from itunes library into my itou

Ok, I have looked and looked and did search. I want to copy a few playlists from my itunes library into my itouch. I was told they would transfer when I synched, they didn't. Drag and drop does not do the job. What am I missing? I am sure something very very simple. HELP. I do NOT want to do the playlist again in my itouch from scratch, as I have almost 1,000 songs to search through.
There has got to be an easier way.

"Synch" is the process whereby files get copied from the iTunes library to the iPod. If your playlists did not copy, what actually did happen when you synched?

  • How do i import my itunes library into my daughters on same machine?

I hope that title makes sense?
We bought my daughter an ipod touch, she now has her own email address etc but all her music (80songs) is in my itunes library & as I'd set her up her own apple ID i want to import her music into her itunes... Someone at the local apple store showed me how to do by opening up sharing of some kind then just dragging it over however I cant remember how they explained to do it!

Son of a gun...it worked.  I tried that two days ago and if failed...or it was pilot error and I did something wrong. In any event, what I did was go directly to the Time Machine folder and drag out the iTunes library.itl onto my Mavericks desktop, then put it into the iTunes folder, then restarted iTunes and Bingo it worked.
    Thank you very much.

  • New Pc: how can I transfer my Itune library into a new pc?

Hi,I will shortly be replacing my pc with a new one and I have a little dilemma:
1 = what do I need to do once I have a new PC up & running? If i just download Itunes will all my exsisting Libriray still be there?
2 = Also I have purchased some videos, How can I save them on external drive or cds?
anyone can advice would be highly appreciated.
    many thanks

*1 = what do I need to do once I have a new PC up & running? If i just download Itunes will all my exsisting Libriray still be there?*
You'll have to move your music and library from the old computer. The iTunes library is a database that links to the songs on your hard drive, neither the library files or the songs will get to your new computer just by installing iTunes.
*2 = Also I have purchased some videos, How can I save them on external drive or cds?*
Have a look at this article: iTunes for Windows: How to copy purchases between authorized computers
Probably the most straightforward way to get iTunes onto your new computer is to network it with the old one and copy your iTunes folder across. This works fine if you have been using iTunes to completely manage your music and all your songs are in iTunes Music not in different folders. You can also use this method with an external hard drive, you drag the folder from the old computer to the external drive and then from the drive to the new computer. If the songs in your library are not all in the iTunes Music folder you can consolidate them. When you consolidate, any songs in the iTunes Library that are not in the iTunes Music Folder are copied to the Music Folder and the Library is updated to point to those new files. Files already in the iTunes Music Folder have no changes made to them: Copying all your iTunes files to one location - Windows
Copying the whole folder brings with it the iTunes Music folder and also the iTunes Library (iTunes Library.itl in Windows) database file which holds all the information about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). You'll get more information including the Folder/File structure in this article: What are the iTunes library files?
When you copy the iTunes folder make sure you put it into the same location on the new computer. This has to be the exact same place, on a PC this is \Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\. Everything has to be exactly the same on the new computer including the Windows user account name. When you open iTunes on the new computer it will be the same as on the original one Songs, Playlists, Play Counts, Ratings etc. You should also use the same version of iTunes on both computers.
If you have an iPod it can be used as an external drive and you can move the iTunes folder onto it: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
Don't forget that you'll need to authorise your new computer to play your iTunes purchases. Also if you are disposing of the old one remember to deauthorise it so you don't use up one of your allowances: About iTunes Music Store Authorisation and Deauthorisation

  • How can I divide a Current Library into two?

I understand how to create a new second iTunes Library,
but how do you transfer some songs/album covers
    to the new library?
The only way I can think of is drag the songs/albums
to a folder on the Desktop and then drag them into
the new library. Then search for the Album Art again.
Any better way to do this would be appreciated.

Back up your iTunes before doing any sorting.  If you remove something you didn't intend to then a backup is the best way to get it back.

  • How can I get my itunes library into my Iphone?

I have manged to sync my Iphone with macbook pro laptop, however, my Itunes library hasnt transferred from my laptop to my Iphone: iphone's itunes library only contains a few purchases.

How did you try to sync your music (and you are looking in the Music app on your phone, not the iTunes store app) ? You should be able to sync music by connecting your phone to your Mac and selecting it on the left-hand sidebar of your Mac's iTunes (on iTunes 11 you can enable the sidebar via option-command-S), and then on the right-hand side of the iTunes screen using the Music tab to select which of your music library to have in your iPhone's Music app.

  • How to set up One iTunes Library with Multiple Hard Drives

    Hello,
I have a question about setting up a daisy chain of external storage hard drives for my itunes library and need some advice.  I have run out of room on my 4TB external storage.  I have an additional 4TB and a 2TB external storage (all are MyBooks) and trying to figure out how to separate out my itunes folder:  I would like to put the TV on one 4TB and the Movies and the other 4TB and the Music/Apps/etc on the 2TB.  Here are my questions
1.) How to I point my iTunes to where I have moved them?  Just make and alias of the folder and put that back in the original folder?
2.) How do I get the new iTunes downloads to go the correct folder to download so it does not set up a new library for downloading?  Can I set more that one location in my preference?  If so- how?
I have looked in the forums and all the information is older and does not address this exact issue.
    Set up:
Mac mini hooked up to Vizio TV running Lion 10.7.2
Processor 2.26 GHZ Intel Core Duo 2
Memory 4GB ( do not really store anything on this one)
    MY Books
1  2TB   Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
2  4TB   Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1  1TB   Mac OS Extended (Journaled)-  this is for documents, etc
All these are daisy chain with 800 Firewire to the Macmini and hooked to TV with HDMI.
Any suggestions would be helpful.  I can not download anything else from iTunes until I get this resolved and it is a real bummer.

Here are three different methods >
How to use multiple iPods, iPads, or iPhones with one computer, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1495
This article > iOS: How to transfer or sync content to your computer, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1296
    suggests using contacts groups.
When syncing contacts, you can choose to sync all of your contacts or only selected groups.
You can select a group of contacts to which all new contacts created on your iOS device will be added.
You can set up groups in the Address Book application.
If you are all going to use the same iTunes apps library, turn off "Automatically sync new apps" in the apps tab just below the list of apps.  Then you won't get new apps on your device unless you select them.

  • How can I get my itunes library on multiple computers at the same time. I have 3 and an iphone 4S

So I have my itunes library on a laptop and synced with my iphone 4S. I have a new laptop and a tower and I use all three computers. Is there a simple way to have all three computers sync the same itunes library, and the phone?

    No.
Iphone will sync with one and only one computer a a time.  Syncing to another will erase the current content from the iphone and replace with content from the new computer.

  • How to Split 1 Order into Multiple Deliveries based on Partner Function ?

    Hello,
How can I split one Sales Order into multiple deliveries, based on the partner function "managed by" ?
The requirement is that one order will be created for different "managed by".
If partner function "managed by" is same at line item level in order, than the items having same "managed by" can be combined in one delivery, else delivery will split and multiple deliveries will be created from 1 Order.
