How do I do a clean un-install of iTunes?

Somehow or another, my iTunes has gotten corrupted and I only need to delete only the certain files that would be necessary to re-do a clean install once this is done so as not to delete my songs too. Can you please tell me how to do this?

Deleting the iTunes app and components does not touch your iTunes library which is stored seperate from the application and components. Just as deleting Word or Excel does not delete any saved Word and Excel files, the same applies with deleting iTunes and your iTunes library. Always a good idea to include your iTunes library or media folder with your computer's backup along with all other important data regardless.
Based on the terms used, I take it you are a Windows user. If so, check this link.

  • Clean Re-install of iTunes?

Can I re-install iTunes without losing all my songs? iTunes just isn't working... Want to have my iPod back.

While I realise that the re-installed iTunes will pick up my music, will it also pick up the Lyrics I have attached to the music, and will it pick up the Artwork (some of which I have created myself). I dont know where iTunes puts these items.
Also - will it pick up playlists?
Advice from an iTunes guru please! (Or anyone else who knows!)
As far as I know, as long as you don't mess with any of the files stored in your iTunes folder or the iTunes library file (.itl), everything should come back fine. I believe the lyrics and artwork you add is also stored in your iTunes folder as well and logged in your iTunes library file, since it's essentially a database for the items in your library. You might want to make backups if you're still feeling nervous about it. Everyone should have backups all the time. I've lost my music library once (over 40GB) and that was enough for me.
You can backup your playlists really easily too. Backup info below:

  • Sync - FROM a full iPhone3Gs, TO a empty/clean/new install, of iTunes

I had problems with sync between iTunes-iPhone3Gs from day 1.
I have been using iTunes for the last 5-6 years, for my music-libery without any serious problem. The 1 day i connectet my iPhone, all seems to go/sync well. But allready the next day, i got problem with syncing the iPhone. I had to rename my iPhone, before i could sync again. I had this problem for some time(with 8-9 new names after all) and today i turned on my PC and everything in iTunes WAS: WIPED - EMPTY - CLEAN!!?
Well i cleaned out all "left-overs" of iTunes-Files, and made at new clean install(of iTunes - Last Version)
My problem is ....i cant find any ways to: sync my full iPhone over to empty iTunes( = load-off all my stuff FROM the iPhone TO iTunes on my PC)
and plz ..read what i ask for! - I KNOW, i can sync iTunes to my iPhone(but thats NOT what i ask for!) - the OTHER way arrround: FROM the iPhone, TO iTunes ...HOW is that done?!?
No matter how i try(to load all my: app's , programs, music, pictures, films ect. ect) ..it tell me, that it will copy all the stuff from iTunes(read that: Nothing) to my iPhone ..and I stop there ..because it really mean that it will wipe my iPhone too, if I proceed.
Since i had enough(when I lost all my music, thanks to a iTune-failure) i really dont wanna loose any more by making a "sync-wipe" to my iPhone!
For crying out loud... why do Apple make this so hard to work/figure out?? - this should be an easy task to save all my stuff and savings from my iPhone, into iTunes ...but NO ...it seem like the only thing it alows, is syncing FROM iTunes ..and since my iTunes is emty ..my iPhone will also end up emty, after a sync....!
Maan.. really, there should be names for making program that stupid(or hard to use/understand) - i like to eat apples, so i dont think that should be the word....!

So.. buttonline is - im ****** as long as i use an iPhone.
Thats sad - I really liked the phone ..the way it worked and the wide range of apps, that made it possible to tailoring the interface, to a degree beone my imagination.
But the fact, that because of "the potential" of someone maybe "stealing music", they throws the phone in chains ..and give this phone and an extra disadvantage compared to other mobiles?!?
To be honest - I'd rather lose the ability to listen to music on the iPhone than to end up with worse backup options.
This is primarily a phone - not an mp3(4)-player (apple has their ipod for that!) and it's grotesque to see how Apple choose to destroy the usability, just to ensure an unnecessary sideshow on the phone. That said - this is only a problem found on iPhone(Apple-product) - All other company has fully functioning solutions without it imposes restrictions on the phone usability - if Apple has a problem with this, they should prefer to remove music from the iphone, but to destroy the backup options with so many disabilities.
Music... That made me think alot!
I have(at home) more than 2000 CD's of music and those CD's, have ALL been bougth from legal stores/shops and should and should therefore be regarded as legal. I chose to copy all my music onto my private NAS Server, so everyone in my house can use it - Still fully legal(where I come from) because I own the music in CD's.
But because I did not buy music through itunes, itunes can not register or check if my music is legal. So I guess.. that itunes will probably judge me as a music thief, or what?!?

  • How do I do a clean re-instal of Thunderbird?

I would like to completely re-instal Thunderbird on one of my PCs (running Windows 8).
For whatever reason, - and I have checked all the settings in "options", I can neither receive nor send emails.
However, when I first uninstall and then instal Thunderbird, the problem persists, - and Thunderbird returns on the PC with exactly the same settings.
I have installed Thunderbird on a laptop, for the email address as in the Windows 8 PC, and everything works fine.
I would like to remove ALL settings for Thunderbird that are on the Windows 8 PC, so that I can do a clean reinstal.

There must be some other residual settings somewhere. I uninstalled and reinstalled, without reloading my profile, and TB was still using some of the original settings.
Perhaps something in registry? Maybe W8.1 is holding on to something?

  • How do I do a clean re-install of Safari 5.1 under Lion

I am seeing a number of anomalies in Safari 5.1 behavior/performance under Lion (10.7.1).  This instance of Safari has "inherited" something via Migration Assistant that it should not have. One of the most obvious of these anamolies is that certain web sites do not display properly.  Example: http://www.padilicious.com/ looks like this:
No Style Sheets are selected in Preferences > Advanced.
If I create a new user account, Safari in that instance renders this website properly.  Thus, Internet Plug-in are not the source of this issue.
I have removed all extensions and reset everything in Safari.  I have even deleted Safari preference files to no avail.  What I think I need to do is to completely uninstall Safari and all of its related files and then reinstall it.  Is this possible and, if so, how do I do that?

I received this after performing a complete un-install, ran a utility to clean the registry, re-booted, then downloaded and re-installed the latest version of iTunes (10.0.7.21) This was the same error message I received before performing the steps above. Any advice or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

  • How do I delete an audiobook not installed with iTunes

My library uses OverDrive to download audiobooks. I downloaded a book onto my ipod using overdrive. Could someone please tell me how to delete it from my iPod. I have deleted it from OverDrive on my computer, but when I sync it doesn't take it off my iPod. Any info would be appreciated....

    Hello sandcastle11,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
How you delete music and files from your iPod depends on how you have it set up to sync with your iTunes library, whether it be manually or automatically. I would check out this Apple support document for instructions on how to delete items from your iPod whether you sync it automatically or manually. Hope it helps.

  • How many times can you clean install leopard on the same computer?

How many times can you clean install leopard on the same computer? Will the leopard dvd run out of installations and not let you install anymore?

    Hi colman Prez;
Now that the funny comments have been made, I have a serious question and that why are you worry about reinstalling Leopard with an Erase & Install which is what I take that you mean when you say clean install. In actually fact there is no such thing in OS X as a clean install.
I am curious because in all the years I have used OS X, I have yet to do an Erase & Install yet.
I know with Windows that they suggest reformatting and reinstalling at the drop of a hat but that isn't true with OS X.

  • How can I do a clean install of OS?

Just bought a 15" MacBook Pro. Did a migration from a previous machine. Doing the migration screwed something up. Long story. Upshot is, I want to wipe out the system and start with a clean slate.
I inserted the Mac OS 10.6 DVD while machine was running and the machine ejects the disk after about 90 seconds with no error message.
Also tried booting with the disk in. Same result.
I assume that there's a way to do a clean OS install using the disk, right?
How can I get the machine to read the disk (which I have handled very carefully and which appears flawless)?
Current OS installed on machine: 10.6.1.
    Thanks,
    Ethan

    hey ebdb,
try holding down the option button while booting up and then choose the boot up from the disk. Make sure you press the option key right after you hear the bong sound at start up.

  • How can I do a clean install of Mountain Lion?

I have an older MacBook Pro that I'm selling. I upgraded to Mounbtain Lion, but there was not an option to do a clean install (wiping everything clean and starting fresh). I want to do this to make sure all of my data is removed before I sell it. How can I do a clean install of Mountain Lion in order to accomplish this? In the past, from DVDs, it was easy. Thanks!

    Budrew wrote:
Sure, but I would imagine that it will be common for people to sell their Macs with upgraded OSs.
That was only OK when you bought the Upgrade DVD and included both the original system discs and the disc you used to upgrade the OS.
Since Apple has now gone to the Download only model of OS X you now always need to install the Original OS or an Upgraded version that you have the DVD disc for.
If a Mac came with Leopard and you upgraded to Snow Leopard and then to Lion or Mt Lion you must remove Lion or Mt Lion and reinstall either Leopard or Snow Leopard and include all the discs for that system, Originals and the Upgrde Snow Leopard DVD.
If your system came Snow Leopard and you installed Lion or Mt Lion thenn again you remoeve Lion or Mt Lion and reinstall Snow Leopard and include the original discs that came with the system
If your system came with Lion and you upgraded to Mt Lion then you remove Mt Lion and reinstall Lion.
The reason for all of that is because with the Download only OS all upgrades are TIED to YOUR Apple ID, not to the computer. So the new owner can not reinstall Lion or Mt Lion, whichever you upgraded to, without using your Apple ID.

  • How can I do a clean install after doing an update using a volume purchase license?

My question is this:  We purchased 20 licenses of Lion through the Volume Purchase program.  2 of the users installed it first doing an upgrade - now they have decided they want to do a clean install.  How can they do a clean install - I can't give them the installer cd we created because I have been informed by Apple Sales that it will use another license from our quantity of 20 - but they offered no other solution.
We would rather not waste another license just to do a clean install.
    Thanks!

Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
This method relies on the Internet Recovery system. This is the standard procedure when you don't have an installer or Lion came pre-installed.

  • How do I do a clean install of Mountain Lion?

I already have Mac OS X Mountain Lion on my MacBook Pro A1126, but how can I do a clean install on it? Do I have to buy a installation disc or from Mac App Store?
    Thanks in advance!

I differentiate between a 'clean' installation and a 'fresh' installation by this meaning: a 'clean' installation means that you're going to erase the boot drive and 'cleanly' install everything, including OS X anew, whereas, for me, a 'fresh' installation means only that you're NOT going to erase the entire drive, but only install a 'fresh' version of OS X.
So which do you wish to do?
Either way, you should just be able to boot into your Recovery partition (hold down the command and R keys whilst booting) and then either install a 'fresh' version of OS X, or erase the contents of the drive, using Disk Utility, and do a 'clean' install of OS X.
Mountain Lion does not come on a disc - you should have purchased it via the App Store and you may need your Apple ID to install again from the Recovery partition.
    Does that help?

  • How do I do a Clean install of Tiger and Classic?

My G4 came with Jaguar. OS 9 was part of the complete installation, that you could install or choose not to install. My computer has been having a lot of issues lately and I think that a clean install would be a good idea, especially, since I used an upgrade to install Panther and then installed Tiger on top of Panther. I want to install classic and Tiger. How do I do this properly? Thanks

I plan to back up my personal files and any
    downloaded software I have.
Amazing that. You've told us that numerous times, but
you've failed to provide us with information on
HOW you're going to do this. That is, please
explain WHAT you're using for the backup and
WHERE you're planning on using to store the
    backup.
All Power Macs come with the capability of burning CD's today. Mine can also burn DVD's, so backing up MY files is NOT a problem. I just can't clone my whole drive. Now, I'm not sure how this is pertinent in answering my question about how to properly do a clean install of Tiger and be able to install Classic. My son however, just told me he thinks that all I need to do is to clean-install Tiger. Then, insert the installation CD with classic on it that came with my computer. Find the invisible file, which is a disk image and drag the contents of the disk image to my computer. If anyone can tell me if this is correct, I would appreciate it.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
If you are already using OS X Lion, use OS X Recovery to reinstall OS X and erase the disk. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
    Follow these steps:
    1. Make a backup of the data you don't want to lose after erasing the hard disk.
    2. Start your computer holding Command and R keys to start in OS X Recovery, and open Disk Utility.
    3. Choose "Macintosh HD" or the OS X partition in the sidebar, go to the Erase tab and erase the disk.
    4. Close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X

  • How do I perform a clean install of Lion Server?

There seem to be many sites documenting how to pull out the ESD image and burn a bootable copy of Lion.
What I'd like to know is how do I perform a clean installation of Lion Server?
Is it possible to just install Lion and then open the App Store and install from Purchase without being charged again?

Okay....so Apple does have a guide related to Mass deployment which includes a rough way to do a clean OS X Server clean install. You need to use a NetBoot Lion Server as a boot, but it works.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4746
Use these steps to create a NetRestore image of an un-configured Lion Server:
Install OS X Lion, and then Lion Server. This server will be used to create the NetRestore image.
On the server, install the app named "Install Mac OS X Lion" from the Mac App Store (a network connection is required for this process).
Install the Server Admin Tools from http://support.apple.com/downloads/ on the server.
Open the "Install Mac OS X Lion" application, and install to an empty volume. This volume can be a spare partition or external hard drive. Be sure to click the Customize button and to select the Lion Server software.
Once installation is complete, the server will restart from the newly installed volume.  Instead of completing the setup assistant, press Command-Q to quit the assistant.
Select the option to shut the server down.
Restart the server and hold the Option key.
When the Startup Manager appears, select the volume which you've already configured Lion Server on.
Open System Image Utility and create a NetRestore image from the newly installed (and still un-configured) volume. If you'd prefer to image the volume after it has already been configured, you can proceed with the setup assistant before booting back to the original installation created in step 1.
