How do I do a complete reset, clearing all current information

How do I completely clear all information on my IPOD classic???

Connect the iPod to your computer. On the Summary Page in iTunes, click on the Restore button. This will delete all the information on your iPod and return it to the factory state.

• How do I do a complete reset with Lion when I don't have a disc?

How do I do a complete reset with Lion when I don't have a disc (bought OS on App store).  When using OS X Snow Leopard I get the message "not allowed".  Is Lion available on Disc? Don't really want to buy it again...  The only way I can see doing this is booting from an OS disc.

What exactly are you trying to do? Reinstall Lion clean, IE without first loading Snow Leopard?
Or are you trying to go back to Snow Leopard as the operating system.
If you want to reinstall Lion your best bet is to go through the downloading process and SAVE that file and then use LionDiskMaker ( a small program) to make a Lion install USB thumb drive. Then wipe the drive and do a complete clean reinstall.
If you want to go back to Snow Leopard you will need to boot the system from the SL DVD and again Wipe the drive and then install SL.

• Can I completely reset /clear the bluetooth subsystem / device database?

I have a Canon MP600 printer/scanner and connected a bluetooth dongle to it (the official Canon part) for the first time today. Unfortunately the user guide omits a few important details and the net result is that both a Mac Pro (early 2008, BT module included) and Macbook Pro (~late 2006, Leopard upgraded) appear to have become very confused about what to do with it.
Initially, contrary to its documentation, the printer ships with bluetooth security turned off. So, my Mac Pro connected to it happily without requesting a passkey and I printed a test page OK. The laptop wouldn't see the printer, though; it seemed that without security features turned on, the printer would only allow one computer to connect. I dug around in the printer's settings (it has an LCD screen so you configure it on-device), found the security option, enabled it and set a passkey (a 4 digit number in this particular printer's case).
Using bluetooth preferences on the Mac Pro, I removed the printer from the device list, then re-ran the setup assistant. It saw the printer, immediately recognising its name (the first time ever, the machine showed the address first, then the name a while later). It prompted for the passkey at the "gathering information" stage. In bluetooth preferences, the printer icon was showing 'Connected' status. At the "To complete the set up..." stage of the setup assistant, I named the printer, clicked on Continue, and watched the printer status suddenly change to not connected. The setup assistant re-showed the "To complete the set up..." page; I set the same name again; this time, I was taken to a page saying "You did not configure any of the available services for your Bluetooth device". Huh?! Extended information on the device in BT preferences says says that it's configured and paired, but not connected. Searching for the error message on Google produces literally no hits, which is a rare thing indeed.
Worse still, the laptop now does exactly the same thing. I've even tried turning off security entirely on the printer, power cycling it and rebooting both machines, but now neither will properly talk to the printer ever again. They just flicker through these strange "Not connected -> connected -> not connected" cycles and refuse to proceed with the obscure "You did not configure..." message.
Given that the Mac Pro successfully printed via this printer at least once, I should be at least able to get the thing to work again with security settings turned off (inadvisable though this is). But Leopard refuses. It's caching some data about the printer somewhere and this is screwing things up.
So, the short part of my very long question is: How do I totally reset the bluetooth software and/or hardware subsystem / device database so that it has no "prior knowledge" or expectations of devices which it detects?
Many thanks.

Replying to my own message for the sake of search engine archives.
I have not found a way to reset/clear the 'knowledge' that the Bluetooth system seems to keep of devices once it's talked to them, or, therefore, a solution to the strange Bluetooth setup assistant behaviour. Curiously, though, the 'not connected' issue with the printer doesn't seem to stop it from being printed to.
Having rebooted a few times, I printed a web page accidentally (! - I meant to save as PDF from the print dialogue box) and the device brought itself on line, received the data and printed, then dropped offline again. So it seems to be working fine. My guess would be that the online/offline behaviour is actually a normal feature of the way this particular device works, while the strange setup assistant behaviour is its way of saying that the device is already set up and working so it has nothing else it needs to do.

• How do I do a complete reset of a printer?

I have a Canon S820 inkjet printer that's worked fine for some years on my G5 PowerMac. Some time ago it started printing "off color", putting a magenta cast on everything, and nothing I could do with Colorsync profiles or other adjustments would correct it. I finally printed the test pages (nozzle check and print head alignment pages) and realized that some of the test patches were being printed in the wrong color - the Photo Cyan patch was printed with black ink and the Photo Magenta patch was printed with Cyan ink. I plugged the printer into my old G4 PowerBook (also running OSX 10.5.8) and lo and behold, the test pages printed in the correct color! (And yes, I do have the right ink cartridges in the right slots.)
So there's nothing wrong with the printer, but something in the G5's driver's innards has gotten twisted. So far I have not found a way to do a complete reset of this printer's installation. I deleted the print queue and reinstalled the driver package (driver version 4.8.3, downloaded from Canon), to no effect. I then deleted the print queue again, found the folders for the printer in /Library/Preferences and /Library/Printers (Canon/BJPrinter in both instances), deleted them, and again reinstalled the driver package, and I still get the wrong colors. The printer is set up with a valid current Colorsync profile, although the "factory profile" in Colorsync points to a non-existent file. This is stale data left over from an earlier version of the driver, which I haven't found a way to remove. (Side question - how can I get rid of a "mode" in the Colorsync Utility's device list?)
The PowerBook is also running the 4.8.3 driver; about the only difference in history I can think of is that I updated the driver from an earlier version on the G5, but on the Powerbook, 4.8.3 was the initial install. This makes me suspect that updating the driver may have gotten something out of line.
What I'd like to do is remove every vestige of the driver from the system and then reinstall it. The driver package does not have an uninstall facility that I can find. So far I haven't found a big enough hammer or all of the nails that need to be hit. Any bright ideas?
Thanx - Andy

Thanx for the reply.
I've been continuing to experiment since my original post, and it's looking like it's the printer after all. After all the testing on the G5, I plugged it back into the Powerbook and now it's printing the same wrong color in the test page from there. Not only that, but I removed the print head, cleaned the contacts, and put it back, and that changed the wrong colors. Still not right, but different. So I'm thinking I have a somewhat intermittent failure in the print head.
What's especially puzzling is that I have two S820 printers, and I've been swapping printers and print heads around, and all the combinations are failing the same way (a medium gray where it should be Photo Cyan, otherwise OK). I've read elsewhere that the wiring in the S820 print head fails after a while and you can get all kinds of funky behavior. A classic (which I'm seeing with one of the print heads) is that the activation of some of the nozzles gets swapped. So I could believe that it's hitting the nozzles for the wrong ink as well.
I've gotten a number of years out of these guys, and I suspect it's time to write them off. The main irritation is the number of ink cartridges I have left over...

• How to prevent the Firefox cache from clearing -- all settings are right, but the cache is gone after each restart.

I want to prevent cache from being deleted after each restart. "Clear history when Firefox closes" is unchecked. User.js files are deleted. Checking "Override automatic cache management" made Cache folder appear in addition to Cache2. After exiting Cache is still there, but upon Firefox re-launching, Cache turns into Cache.Trash and promptly disappears. What to do?

Hello,
I'm sorry to hear that. Can you please try these solution to address your concern.
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from mozilla.org (or choose the download for your operating system and language from this page) and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (or open the Firefox menu and click the close button ).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
#*Windows:
#**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
#**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Installing Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found here.
<b>WARNING:</b> Do not use a third party uninstaller as part of this process. Doing so could permanently delete your Firefox profile data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. <u>These cannot be easily recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device!</u> See Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles. <!-- Starting in Firefox 31, the Firefox uninstaller no longer lets you remove user profile data.Ref: Bug 432017 and https://support.mozilla.org/kb/uninstall-firefox-from-your-computer/discuss/5279 [Fx31] Windows uninstaller will no longer offer the option to remove personal data -->

• How can I save the iPhoto library ( ie all current photos) to another media / HD and maintaing the access to it

I am struggling with the export features of iPhoto:
- That is for the mac, (but also for iOs7 on the iPad would be interesting)
1/ how to generate a backup ( from the iPhoto library) -
- just rename it and then copy it to another device / HD ?
2/ what is the recommended procedure, to have several Photo - Collections, ( iPhoto libraries)
and then to switch between them.
Thx in advance

iPhoto for Mac
Back up:
Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store
Switching between Libraries:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
or
File Menu -> Switch to Library
or
Double click on your preferred Library.
There is no recommendation to have multiple libraries. They're inconvenient.

• How do you use family share when we all currently use the same Apple ID but different iCloud accounts?

our family is currently using all the same Apple ID so we don't have to purchase thing twice, but now I want to set up the family share. Do we all have to have our own Apple ID to set up the family share? We do all have separate iCloud's accounts, I'm not sure if that even makes a difference.

Hello me1002,
That is a good question. Everyone will need their own Apple ID that is signed into iCloud and iTunes. When setting this up, someone will need to be the Organizer so whom ever it is will champion this. Then everyone else will need to sign in to each respective accounts and then the organizer will need to send out invites to join Family Sharing. If you get that all setup, remember that when making purchases from those Apple ID will belong to that specific Apple ID so if anyone leaves, others will not have access to that purchased content.

• Unable to clear all security from 9.3.1 Planning outline

Hi,
I am trying to clear all security from Planning outline. I have only one line in secfile.txt
HP_groupId,Gross Profit,READWRITE,@IDESCENDANTS
Then I ran
D:\Hyperion\Planning\bin>importsecurity "PLAN2,admin,password,,,SL_CLEARALL"
But there is still security in Planning outline. What am I doing wrong?
I even restarted the Planning service.
(hp_admin.pdf is not clear how this works)
Alternatively, should I just clear all data in HSP_ACCESS_CONTROL table? I have a backup of that table.

Hi,
What happens if your secfile.txt is empty, what is logged to the command window, it should be something like
Mon May 11 18:58:44 BST 2009 :: Logged in successfully
Mon May 11 18:58:44 BST 2009 :: SL_CLEARALL flag set....
Mon May 11 18:58:44 BST 2009 :: Delete all the existing Access Control.
Mon May 11 18:58:45 BST 2009 :: Setting Access controls....
I know there was some problems with earlier versions of 9.3 though it was meant to be fixed in the first release of 9.3.1
Security access is not deleted if ImportSecurity is run with this argument: SL_CLEARALL.

Is your version of planning patched to the latest patch release?

• How to completely reset iMessage on MacBook Pro

I have tried literally every single thing, including scheduling an appointment with AppleCare... to which I got disconnected and never received a callback.  My iMessages on my Mac is not sending messages to any iphone.  I would just like to simply RESET the whole set up of iMessage, as if I just received this Mac if possible.
How do I completely reset iMessage on a MacBook Pro?
Thank you.

Back up all data.
Quit Messages if it’s running. Force quit if necessary. Relaunch it and test after each of the following steps. If the problem isn't resolved, quit again and go on to the next step.
Step 1
Make sure you know the ID and password you use with iMessage. Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Use the search box in the toolbar of the Keychain Access window to find and delete all items with "iMessage" or "com.apple.idms" in the name. Log out and log back in.
Step 2
Hold down the option key and select
              Go ▹ Library
from the Finder menu bar. Move the following items from the Library folder to the Trash (some may not exist):
              Caches/com.apple.Messages
              Caches/com.apple.imfoundation.IMRemoteURLConnectionAgent
              Containers/com.apple.iChat
              Containers/com.apple.soagent
              IdentityServices
Leave the Library folder open. Log out and log back in.
Step 3
Go back to the Finder and move the following item from the open Library folder to the Desktop:
              Messages
Note: you are not moving the Messages application. You’re moving a folder named “Messages.”
If Messages now works, delete the Messages folder on the Desktop. Otherwise, quit Messages again. Put back the folder you moved, overwriting the newer one that may have been created in its place.
Step 4
In the Preferences subfolder, there may be several files having names that begin with any of the following strings:
              com.apple.iChat
              com.apple.ids
              com.apple.imdsmsrecordstore
              com.apple.imessage
              com.apple.imservice
Move them all to the Desktop. There may also be a file with the name "com.apple.imagent.plist". Move that to the Trash.
Also in the Preferences folder, there's a subfolder named "ByHost". Open it and do the same thing.
Log out and log back in. Test again. This time Messages should perform normally, but your settings will be lost. You may be able to put back some of the files you moved to the Desktop in this step. Relaunch and test after each one. Eventually you should find one or more that causes Messages to malfunction. Delete those files and recreate whatever settings they contained.
If the issue is still not resolved, quit Messages again and put all the items you moved to the Desktop back where they were. You don’t need to replace the items you moved to the Trash. Stop here and post your results.
If you later decide that you don’t like the results of Steps 3 and 4, you can undo them completely by quitting Messages and restoring the items you deleted in those steps from your backup.
