How do i do an audio chat with Googletalk users on iChat?

I just got Tiger OS with the new iChat and I was expecting to be able to do an audio chat with my friends who have Googletalk on their PCs. Unfortunately, the audio chat option is greyed out next to all of their names on my buddy list and I can only type chat with them. How do I fix this?
FYI, I already looked at some of the other posts and at the googletalk website, and I am already using a jabber account with the server as talk.google.com, my gmail ID, and the port set at 5223 as directed. My computer does have a built in microphone. What am i missing?

Hi
This page still says nothing about Audio chats

Can you audio chat with at PC user using AIM. I can not get my phone icon out of grey. Thank you for your suggestions. Do anyone think that IChatAV will one day be able to do audio/video with MSN messenger. Have a great day!!1

You can't have an audio-only chat between iChat on the Mac and AIM on the PC, but there is a PC client which can be used for an audio-only chat with iChat, called Trillian.

  • Can't audio chat with aim user

I just bought an isight and i have been trying to audio/video chat with an AIM user who is using AIM5.9 not triton and i am using ichat2.1. We can get the video to work but we can get the audio to work. Any suggestions on what to do?

    Hi jd50,
Welcome To The Apple Discussion Pages.
This is normally due to the Video quality at the PC end being too high and taking all the bandwidth.
    Start a Video chat
You open the Connection Doctor at your end (in the Video menu)
They then pull the preview tab (behind the incomming video) to the front.
To the right now should be a small icon which they should clck.
    This brings up a slider.
They should move the slider to the left - slowly
You should see their framerate and Bit rate go up
At somepoint - if there is enough adjustment - you should get sound as well.
Balance as required between pic quality and sound

  • IChat video & audio chat with AIM user not working

    Hi all,
I have a mobileme account. A friend has got a new Macbook with 10.5.5 and signed up for an AIM account. We've tried to do video chat (over the internet) with iChat 4 and cannot establish a session in either direction. It gets to the "Starting video chat..." part and then fails, telling us "did not recevie a response from ..."
Audio chat doesn't work for us either.
Video & audio chat works fine locally via Bonjour for us. It's just over the internet (through a NAT router if that matters) that multimedia chat does not function.
    Any ideas?

Yes, I have set the streaming speed to 500 on both mine and her end to no avail. I've also tried port 443, and we also tried using a jabber server (with google talk accounts). I didn't expect the jabber thing to work, as it's free and video/audio/screen sharing use non-trivial bandwidth.
I have not been able to do video, audio, or screen sharing with her at all. But I know these features work, as I have used them on my local wireless network via bonjour.
    Only bonjour...
Do both of us have to be paying customers of MobileMe to get video chat over the internet? It seems like only one should suffice...

  • Can't video/audio chat with AIM user

As iChat AV seems to be the only IM app that will let me see someone else's webcam (I don't have one) & use audio chat, I'm trying to use it for the first time. I've got my friend to set up an AIM account, but... if I try to chat to them, the audio/video chat features are greyed-out. And apparently my friend's AIM says I'm not set up for audio or video chat.
I've looked at everything I can think of, checked the preferences... nothing. No idea why it won't work. It's driving us both mad... anyone got any suggestions?

    Well done, Sandra,
Good to see more of your helpful, first-hand PC experiences documented.
... I'm sure Ralph or someone else will give it to you ...

  • No AIM Audio Chat with PC - Why!?!

Why is there no support for iChat AV (AIM) to PC? Why doesn't it work?
I have read through this board and the "Trillian solution" FAQ and can't seem get an answer to why?
Certainly seems to be a hot topic. I really would like to audio chat with why AIM - PC friends.

    Hi,
If the PC user is on XP and has the Service Pack 2 installed they may need to enable the AIM Application through the Firewall
    http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page12.html
    See the bottom yellow box.
Trillian will use the same ports.
Trilian basic will allow PCs to use the AIM servers and connect with iChat for Audio chats.
The AIM application will not connect to iChat for Audio only chats becuase that was the way it was written. It will support a Video to Audio connection where the Mac user has a camera and the PC has only a Microphone.

I have a friend that has a an apple powerbook, and on Ichat it says that I can audio chat with him, but any time I or he try to connect and do that, it says that one or the other of us didn't respond. So, how can we fix this problem? Its driving both of us crazy.

    HI Kellen,
It is more a question of whether you (both) have opened the ports that iChat needs.

  • I can't video/audio chat with someone using 10.3

I'm using an iMac G5 with built-in iSight. I sometimes audio chat with someone that has 10.3 and no webcam (I have 10.4) but today when I tried a one-way video it wouldn't work and it said that I wasn't responding...I then tried audio and it said that the other person wasn't responding, they said that it said the same for me. Does anyone know how to fix?

Do you have the proper ports opened in your firewall/router?

  • Audio chat with iChat (Mac) and Trillian (PC) not working

I use iChat on my Mac (actually, we have tried two different ones with the same results) and the person I want to have an audio chat with is using Trillian Basic (just downloaded) for his PC. We tried using the AIM client on his PC and that didn't work... I looked through the forums and several suggested using Trillian.
We are both able to text chat with each other, but when I try to initiate an audio chat, it tells me almost immediately that the other user has declined my invitation. He never gets an alert. Basically the same thing happens the other way as well.
Any ideas? Is there a setting on the PC that needs to be set for this to work? I can iChat with Audio to other iChat users from my Mac(s), so I am thinking that the PC is the problem.
    Thanks!

I use iChat to videochat with my sons, who use Trillian on the PC. It's not that easy to set up, opening ports, enabling Trillian through the XP firewall, etc.
You might fare better with Skype. Download from:
    Mac version
    PC version
If you do want to persist with Trillian (and the results are much better once you've got it set up), try this tutorial:

Let us know how you get on.

PS You can't do audio-only chats between iChat and AIM.

  • Can you use audio chat with PCs with microphones?

Is there a simple way to link audio chat between Windows and Mac?

You can audio-chat with a PC user with the latest version of AIM and a mic (on the PC). On the Mac side though, you need to have a camera (camcorder or iSight) plugged in. You cannot audio-chat with a PC AIM user without a camera.
I use my powerbook 1.33 GHz, iChat AV3 and my Sony DV camcorder (FW) to audio-chat with friends using PCs eqipped with AIM and just a mic. No problems at all.
