How do I do an IN-PLACE UPDATE for Safari Windows software?
There is no software update information anywhere in Safari 5.1.7... not in the Help tab, not in the Preferences... no information at all about software updates.
I'm using the Windows version of Safari, 5.1.7 on Windows 7. This Safari browser has always been screwed up... it has never worked correctly. The pages black out randomly when I move the mouse around, the bookmarks bar scrambles when I try to move a bookmark to another folder, the browser goes in to momentary comas frequently... it is a joke to try to use.
Unfortunately, I need to use multiple browsers for what I do, and I'm somewhat locked in to using Safari as one of my browsers right now... otherwise, I'd never use the Windows version of Safari at all. The Mac version of Safari works fine, and I've never had a problem with it on any Mac, but the Windows version *****.
I want to do a simple IN-PLACE update for Safari Windows to see if that corrects any of the many multiple problems that this version has, so I don't have to completely re-install it and start over from scratch.
How do I do it?

Actually, I went through the complexities of setting up the Firefox Profile Manager for Firefox. I kinda' works, sometimes, and then other times it doesn't. Back around a year ago when I set up the Firefox Profile Manager, it had problems with holding on to virtual memory, so if you'd close it and then try to re-open in a newer version of Firefox, it would open up the newer version without its profile, without all the new things I had installed in the newer one, or it would open up the newer version with the profile for the old one and give you all kinds of error messages.
I wresteled with that on the Mozilla forum for a while, but it ened up with no one being able to solve the multiple problems that the Firefox Profile Manager had... not sure if that's changed.
I'm currently using one version of Firefox, one version of Chrome, one version of IE, one version of Safari, and one version of the portable Firefox-Tor browser.
For using multiple versions of Firefox, using the portable, non-installation versions seems to work better than their buggy Profile Manager.
I read a little about Virtual Box and the like... looks like a little more than I'm willing to try right now.
Maybe I'll try Opera.

Requirements for iPhone 5:
Syncing with iTunes on a Mac or PC requires:
Mac: OS X v10.6.8 or later
PC: Windows 7; Windows Vista; or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 3 or later
iTunes 10.7 or later
The highest version of iTunes you can install is 10.6.3 which will not sync with the iPhone 5.

You can't. It's now integrated with the URL bar. It's a search/URL combo.

I think you'll have to reinstall the OS from your Restore partition.

Help! I downloaded and installed the a security update for safari last night and after it rebooted my system quit recognizing my password and quit working, taking me to a utilities window.

I let my system download and install the latest security update for Safari yesterday, 28 Apr 14, and when it rebooted, it wouldn't let me login. Instead it took me to a utilities windown that allowed me to verify my h/d then told me it couldn't be repaired so I would need to save all of my documents (not sure how since it won't boot up) and reinstall OS X. Help!

if you’ve been making regular backups to date, then you could just restore from the last update which you’d made before installing the most recent Safari update. If you haven’t been making regular backups to date, you can try the method provided on this Apple page, in the “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility” section. If you’re not already making regular backups, then I’d highly recommend purchasing an external disk for use as a Time Machine backup destination once you’ve gotten this resolved, so that this sort of problem would be more easily resolved in the future.

Mac OS X 10.5.8 is years old, 3 major versions out-of-date and unsupported at this point. You will never get any further updates for 10.5.8, and more and more applications will stop supporting 10.5.8 as time goes on. As mende1 points out, you can buy Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6), which will let you use your new iPhone with your computer, but you need to make sure your computer's hardware is supported. See the system requirements for Snow Leopard:

If your computer cannot run Snow Leopard, you will need to either buy a new computer or abandon any thoughts of syncing the iPhone with that computer.
Also, note that you'll get far better integration of your iPhone and your Mac if you're using Lion (Mac OS X 10.7) or Mountain Lion (Mac OS X 10.8), which are required to use iCloud. Of course, the requirements of those systems are even steeper than those of Snow Leopard:

Snow leopard not supported any more? security updates for safari

Apparently the latest security updates for safari have been released for lion & mountain lion but not for 10.6. I have had some problems updating to lion so I'm still on snow leopard. Does this mean snow leopard is not officially supported any more? Not sure if this should be of concern to me. I would like at least the security related updates to be up to date on my machine.

Don't hold your breath.
With the possible exception of the odd critical security patch (like the recent Java ones) there are unlikely to be any further updates for Snow Leopard.

I've tried to find some info on hpw long apple provides security updates etc for server software, i.e what their guaranteed lifecycle is. I've havent found any answer to this allthough i'm sure it must be on apples pages somewhere.

I can't be sure of any guarantee that Apple has but they are still releasing security updates for OS X server 10.3.9, which is now essentially a full version behind as they are up to 10.4.9 and until a week ago were on the verge of releasing 10.5.
Current downloads page shows new updates including security updates for 10.3 servers below.

Since there are no 10.2 server security updates on the downloads page I assume that they will let us get 1 full version down the line before cutting off security updates.

How can I purchase the 2.0 update for my touch with iTunes gift card?

I purchased an iTunes gift card from BestBuy yesterday specificaly fr the 2.0 update for the touch, but when I get home, I find out that I can buy it unless I use a credit card...BECAUSE I LIVE IN CANADA!? Honestly Apple, you are basicaly begging me to jailbreak my iPod. I don't mind paying for the update, but I want to use my gift card! I'm only 16 so I can't have a credit card. I don't want my $20 dollars to go to waste, it's not as if I'm going to buy music with it, as downloading music is LEGAL here in Canada.

Even though I have a credit card I manage my iTunes account use gift cards. I prefer to keep the credit card for emergency purposes only since it's too easy for me to get carried away with it and run up the balance.
The problem here is in the Canadian iTunes Store you _can not_ use store credits for software or game purchase. According to this post - http://forums.ilounge.com/showthread.php?t=231967 - it is apparently against Canadian tax laws and commerce restrictions to purchase these with store credits or gift cards. Also as suggested in other posts here using PayPal to add credits to your iTunes account will not work since they are credits.
I don't really understand the issue here. I pay cash for my store credits and I pay cash to pay off my credit card. My gift cards were probably bought with a credit card. This will restrict sales in Canada since I would guess the majority of iPod owners are too young to obtain a credit card.

How can I prevent Firefox from suggesting updates for a certain add-on?

One of the extensions I use has relaesed a new version that contains changes that I do not want. I would like to keep the old, previous version. The add-on update check in Firefox however enables the "include this update" checkbox every time it checks for updates. Is there a way to selectively disable updates for this add-on permanently?

This will be far easier in Firefox 4, it will have the option to disable updates for individual add-ons from inside the add-ons manager.

How to download an update for Safari 1.0.3?

I have the original Jaguar edition of OSX with Safari 1.0.3. A couple of travel websites tell me I need to update to Safari 1.2 in order to access their website (cheaptickets.com for example). I found the download for 1.2, but I don't know what to do with a download once it appears on my desktop. Can someone walk me through it step by step. Will it automatically replace my current Safari? Do I put the download in a folder somewhere? As you can tell, i don't know what I'm doing. Thanks so much!!

Safari 1.0.3 was the last version of Safari that was available for OS X 10.2.8. Versions 1.1 through 1.3.1 are supported by OS X 10.3.x and Safari 2.x is only available for OS X 10.4.x. So, you would have to upgrade OS X to be able to use a newer version of Safari.
You might want to try Firefox and see it that browser works on the site.

i am having grave difficulty using thompson learning, because it does not support the common os x browsers, and netscape does not recognise the jre 1.5 that i have installed. can apple provide some serious update to safari, or could someone advice me as to how to proceed in making netscape install the jre1.5 plugin
