How do I downgrade to iMovie HD6?

I got iLife only to find that it won't install iMovie 08 (my old Mac Pro is too old for it) and I remember that Apple had posted a downgrade link to the previous version of iMovie because there were a lot of complaints about the radical changes in the 08 version. Can anyone tell me how I can downgrade to that previous version? Many thanks.

Hi bubbalou - Jon's link won't work for you because it is available only to those with iMovie 08 already installed - and you couldn't install it.
Also, 6.0.4 isn't a "downgrade". It is an 'as-well-as'. It is saying that some people may prefer to continue using the HD version for some editing purposes.
Did you not have an HD version already on your computer? If not, probably your only recourse is Ebay, as it is no longer available in stores.

How do I downgrade to iMovie '06?  I have '11 but would like the effects from '06?  I cannot download it from any of the available links.

I am not sure if it is will still work but if you have an original disk you can try loading it. It should load to a different folder.

  • How do I downgrade to iMovie '11 v9.0.4 from v9.0.6

Ever since I upgraded to version 9.0.6 from the App Store, I no longer have sound imported from my home DVD videos.  I get the video imported but there is no sound.  The DVD player app plays the DVD with audio  fine  so I know the DVD has sound.  I found some other forums talk about this and some folks fixed the problem by downgrading to 9.0.4.  But their procedure is to delete iMovie and reinstall from installer disk.  My Mac did not come with iLife installer disk because it came preloaded.  Also, I understand that iMovie download files from the Apple Support website will not work with my preloaded iMovie file.  My TimeMachine has not run for a while so I can't rely on it.

Here are the various builds of iMovie.  There is no 9.0.0, but 9.0.1 looks like the most recent stable build.

As for your projects, they should stay in the same directory even when you change application versions.
You can navigate to them manually by going to *yourhomefolder*/movies.  You should see iMovie Events and iMovie Projects folders.
You can back them up if you're nervous about losing them.

  • How do I downgrade to iMovie 9.0.1 or 9.0.0?

Back in January I upgraded to iMovie 9.0.2 and I have been working on a project ever since. Just to check on it, because my computer goes slow and I cant view how it will really play in the Full screen Theater, I export it from time to time to see how its coming out. And I just have started to notice the audio issue attatched to the 9.0.2 update.
I have been told that the only way to fix this is to revert back to 9.0.0, can someone tell me how to do this while not losing my projects? Thanks

  • How do I put an iMovie onto a DVD?

How do I put an iMovie onto a DVD to share with others?  Mac OS x Lion operating system. iMovie ... not 2011!

    Hi
Do not use - Share to iDVD - if You want any kind of Good DVD as this gives poor result BUT
    • Share to Media Browser - and as Large - Not HD or other resolution as this too costs in quality.
    • in iDVD im port it from Media button (down right) / Movies
Use good brand DVDs - I do
    • use Verbatim
    • DVD-R (as they work on more and even older DVD-players
    • burn speed set down to x2 - x4
    By using
    • iMovie HD6 or
    • FinalCut
You get an even better resulting DVD

  • Trouble opening iMovie HD6 projects on iMovie 08.

    Hi there,
I have just bought a new iMac, with iMovie 08. I have all my prior projects, created in iMovie HD6 stored on a LaCie external drive. The projects read and open on my laptop (running iMovie 06), but show blank files when plugged into the new iMac. How do I get them to open on both?

iMovie 08 cannot 'read' all of iMovie HD6's transitions/effects and will show blank files if you try to open version 6 movies with iMovie 08. You can download a free version of iMovie 6... version 6.0.4. This is the same as version 6.0.3, but it is only available to those of us who purchased new Macs that have iLife 08 preinstalled. The reason for this is for exactly what you are finding. You still need iMovie 6 to open your older projects and probably for creating new ones. Both versions of iMovie can coexist on the same computer......
Just tried looking for 6.0.4 and cannot find it...Maybe it is in the iLife updater released today. Will check and let you know.

  • Downgrading to iMovie from Final Cut Express - exporting?

My husband and I used to be into video editing before the kids were born. We have two 6 year old macbooks and one is dead and one is dying so we are forced to make a decision here on how to procede. My husband does one or two hobby type movies a year, but we mostly use our video editing software for home movies of the kids now. We don't have the money to spend on these things we used to, or the time to really be trying to tinker around with Final Cut anymore. So we decided to buy the $600.00 Mac Mini instead of a new laptop. We are thinking about switching back to iMovie as well, since buying the newer version of Final Cut will be pretty spendy, and iMovie seems to have come a long way since we last used it. We have a really old version of Final Cut right now, so I think upgrading would be necessary if we stick with Final Cut.
I am really confused about the new iMovie though. We have been using a Sony Digital 8 camcorder and storing our movies on tape. I talked to the guy at the Apple store about the Mac Mini and asked why there was no 'export to camera' on the new iMovie (I'm actually using '09, but I am told 11 doesn't have it either). He looked stumped and actually said he had never heard of doing that and why would I want to do that. I asked where I was supposed to store our final movies and he said the hard drive. I was surprised and told him that hard drives crash, but tapes last much longer. He said tapes degrade, and I said yeah, but not for like 30 years or longer, our hard drives have only lasted on average 5 years. But later I was thinking that maybe it wasn't a bad idea to back up our tapes on the hard drive. We have a 1 TB external which we would probably fill when all is said and done. I am thinking of getting some cloud storage from BackBlaze as well, so I started thinking that maybe tapes are becoming obsolete and we should really do this HD thing (for now, until a better storage option comes out in a few years because HD's are obviously not ideal).
But then I started looking at the new iMovie and I have no idea how to export a final movie into a file that won't lose any quality. In final cut there is the 'self contained movie' setting which is a full quality version of the final movie. But in iMovie, I can't find an equivilent. How are you exporting your final movies in iMovie and where are you storing them? And if we downgrade to iMovie, will there be a loss in quality? I saw another thread that says that iMovie 11 is exporting movies that lose a lot of quality. Has Apple fixed this yet? When we started using iMovie years ago we were told that it imports and exports the exact same quality since it is all digital there would be no degradation. But now that I read that there is a loss of quality in the new iMovie I am nervous to downgrade to iMovie. Can anyone shed some light on these issues for me? Should we stick with Final Cut, or can we make iMovie work?

Is this a really slow board, or did I ask a silly question? Why no responses?

  • How to make chapters in iMovie for iDVD?

A long time ago, in iMovie HD, you could make chapters, and iDVD would honor them. Perhaps I still can in iMovie 11, but I can't find it. Please let me know if it is still possible, and how.
Maybe they are not called chapters?
    John C

    Hi
    There are Chapters in iMovie'11
Project window - You have to select a project to be edited - so that just this show up - top and right hand corner there are two small brown/red things (to the right of the three blue squares) that Mark or Chapter-mark
    Things reg. Chapters
    • Do not set any Chapter mark at - VERY beginning or End - as iDVD want's to do this by it self and get's confused
    • Do not set any Chapter mark in or within (2 sec from) any Transition !
(This You can do a work around if You MUST - Export out movie as a Full Quality QuickTime .mov file then re-import this into iMovie and use this in a NEW Project - and now You can set Chapters in transitions without any problem)
    • When delivered to iDVD - DO NOT GO BACK to iMovie or FCE/P to make any adjustments - This set off the iDVD BUG resulting in that all Chapters points to Chapter one.
If done Medicine is to trash movie in iDVD and clean Media Assets - then re-import - or start a new iDVD project
    AND
I never use "Share to iDVD" as results get's bad to me - I do "Share to Media Browser" and as Large and in iDVD import from this.
Best result I get is by using iMovie HD6 or FinalCut Express or Pro as they don't discard every second line as iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 does.
    Yours Bengt W

  • What about Problem JVC Full HD Camcorder GZ-HD7E and iMovie HD6 ?

I want purchase Full HD Camcorder JVC GZ-HD7E .
What do you mean about "Problem - Not Problem" by use with
    iMovie HD6 ? (PPC G5, 10.4.9 and or iMac G5, 10.4.9)
    Thanks .

Most digital video is compressed to save space, generally using lossy video compression codecs. That means that when you go through a compress/uncompress cycle, you don't exactly get the same thing. How bad it is depends on the compression algorithm and the bitrate you choose. If the bitrate is high enough, the compression artifacts might be tolerable. MPEG-2 has a little bit of a bad rap because early MPEG-2 encoders weren't very good, and MPEG-2 can look bad if you choose a bitrate that is too low. Scenese with lots of movement, or low-light scenes with lots of video noise are particulary challenging to compress with good results.
Problems get worse when you have to re-compress, because then you apply a lossy algorithm on top of video material that already has artifacts. It's like making a copy of a copy with a not-so-perfect copy machine. So yes, there is some quality loss when you re-encode the MPEG-2 video for editing. But the loss at that point is minimal, because you are encoding to a very high quality codec. It doesn't make the video any better, but it doesn't make it any worse than it already is. The real quality loss occured earlier, when the video was recorded, and the initial MPEG-2 encoding was performed. Whatever detail was lost there, and whatever artifacts where introduced at that point, cannot be recovered later.
It all comes down to: what do you consider acceptable? Compare it to music. Yes, a CD is of much higher quality than a MP3 song. But most people can't tell the difference, and are just fine with MP3.
With HD, you don't really have a choice. The Canon HV20 - like all MiniDV based HD camcorders - uses MPEG-2 compression, too. It only shares the tape media and Firewire connection with SD MiniDV camcorders, not the DV compression algorithm. Importing from the HV20 into iMovie goes through the same re-encoding process. The AVCHD camcorders use MPEG-4 compression.

HI there, Did you have IM 6 before you upgraded to I Life 8? If you did than IM6 will be in your application folder, marked as I MOvie previous version. If not you can download it from their website. It should be version 6.0.4. Make sure you repair permissions before and after installing any software. Of course back up is the Given. Have you tried the new I MOvie? It is really good at doing what it is intended to do. If you have only been using the Mac for a month, how do you know that IM 7 stinks and IM6 is better? Personally I am using them both, and like it a lot. Ileen

You can get the latest version of Firefox 3.6 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
You can trash Firefox 4.0 then re-install Firefox 3.6, it will use your existing bookmarks, passwords etc
Mozilla are working to prevent Mac users with non-compatible systems from getting the notification about Firefox 4, and also not displaying the "Download Firefox 4" button on http://www.mozilla.com

  • How can I export an imovie in a pc format?

How can I export an iMovie to a format that will work on a PC?

Easiest was is to install QuickTime for Windows (which is free from Apple) on the PC. Then any iMovie-created file will work.
If you do not have permission to install QuickTime for Windows on your PC (this could be the case for a corporate PC, for example), then I would suggest using SHARE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME. Choose Movie to MP4. Choose h.264 for the video codec.

  • How do i export an imovie to a facebook group?

It is easy to export to a Facebook account, but how do I export to a Facebook Group that has restricted access? The Group under my account is a Private Group which means only members of the group can view its content, however from both my iPhone and in iMovie three is no reference to Facebook Groups of any kind.
How can I export my iMovie into my private group without making it public eg through my main FB account or via a service such as YouTube? I just want the file to be in the private group and not visible to non-members.
    TIA

Thanks for your reply Matt, that is what I have been doing, but I was really hoping it would be possible to do this from the Sharing menu on either or both of my iPhone or iMovie.
I guess I shall be disappointed yet again. As so often, "So much promise, so little delivery."

How do I downgrade my iCloud storage and get a refund within the 15 days?
I recently up-graded from 10 to 20GB in the middle of my storage plan, but I've changed my mind. How can I get a refund and revert my account back to its previous settings?

If in the US, follow the link below (you must request a refund within 15 days) -

it gives the USA phone number - if you don't live there you will have to find an equivalent number from the 'Contact Us' link at bottom right of this page.
