I just recently got some home movies converted from VHS to DVDs and want to use a clip from one in a slide show that I will be creating on iMovie.

MPEG Streamclip is free. Apple's MPEG-2 playback component(which may be needed for MPEG Streamclip and QuickTime to use VOB files from unprotected video DVDs) isn't.

Personally, I use iMovie to edit my home movies, then I use Burn to burn it to a disk. Burn will automatically set the necessary files and everything for you too! Just drag and drop, and click burn.

I found this article that outlines where to go to download your purchases again in iTunes.
The article named says it is for iTunes 10, but the steps will work for iTunes 11 as well.
In iTunes, click iTunes Store (below Store).
Click the Purchased link in the top-right of the Store home page (below Quick Links).
In the page that appears, select a category.
iTunes shows you which of your purchases are available for download. You can view all of your past purchases, or just the ones not currently in your iTunes library. Items already in your library aren’t available for download.
If you select Music, you can view your purchases by song, artist, or album. If you’re using Album view, click an album to see which songs on it are available for downloading.
To search for an item, type its name or a keyword in the search field, and then press the Return key to view your search results.
To download an item, click the Download button to the right of the item.

Once you get to the page for your Movies or TV Shows, there should be a checkbox that says Download HD When Available. Uncheck that, and then download your purchase and that should get you the SD version of your video.

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:

Apple says that Playback Component is not required with Lion, which I have. But elsewhere, I read that I do need it. Worse, most of the reviews say that it doesn't work, that there is no audio. I don't have $20 to throw away. And I'm not sure that, even if I did install Playback Component, that I'd have video, because I don't have it now. Am I missing something here? Is it true that iMovie won't import a video from a DVD that I can watch on the same computer, but it will import a movie from a camera? (I don't have a camera.) So: why am I not getting video, let alone not getting audio? And what can I do to edit a movie that's on an unprotected DVD? Thanks.

dvd is end of the road, DVD uses a compressor (mpeg2) not meant for further processing..
Handbrake converts into mpeg4, another lossy compressor (not meant for editing...), which needs to be converted AGAIN for usage in iM...
I would do....
get for 20$ the Apple mpeg2 plugin
and for free the tool Streamclip for converting mp1/2/4, divx, avi, vob...
(with that combo you can NOT override copyprotection mechanisms! ... )
other tools are:
* DVDxDV, it has a 30d trial period (testdrive sets a watermark)... and cost 25$
* Cinematize >60$
* Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in

I decided that i would prefer to watch it from my computer (windows vista, I tunes version 10.6.3.25) but when i sync my ipod (IOS 5.1.1) it transfers my other movies that i bought but not the movie that i rented. I need help deleting videos, tv shows, and movies downloaded from itunes. I have followed the instructions to delete from the macbook, I selected the videos I wanted to delete and right clicked to delete. Nothing happens. When I double click on the video it still starts playing. I also followed the instructions to delete the videos from the iphone by swiping from left to right with nothing happening. Does anyone know if 'Dazzle' works with Mac to transfer VHS tapes from a video player to a DVD via an iMac?

Also, I should mention that I spoke to an Apple rep. He sent me a link to download a driver for the Jukebox once we found out that the pc did not recognize the device when I plugged it into the USB port. He told me that once I upload the driver, it will recognize it and I can just copy and paste the songs into a folder, then import them to iTunes. So far it has not worked and when I tried to call back, it looks like morning is the soonest I can speak to someone. So I'm trying on here.
