How do I download and install iTunes on my external hard drive?

I have successfully moved my itunes music files however I foresee a problem when I sync my iPod touch iTunes is going to re-load all the files. The reason for the external hard drive is to free up space on my laptop so she can perform better so I'd be back at square one. ? I'd like to choose which file iTunes downloads to. Please advise.

That does not really matter since to restore your iPod the computer needs an interent connection.

Tried your suggestion various ways but it had no effect the download button was still greyed out and the install button would not activate will keep trying to find a solution. I dont want to boot from the external hard drive that has Lion on mainly because it is a usb HD and the connection to my wireless modem slows the connection rate and downloading would take about ten hours

  • Can i download and run itunes from an external hard drive

can i download and run itunes from an external hard drive?

The iTunes application should be on the boot drive but you can keep the iTunes library on an external.
hold Shift when launching iTune sand select Create library and select the external.
This will create an iTunes folder on the external with all the library files and all media will also go into this folder.

So you want to move the iPhoto Library?
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

    From your OLD computer...
Copy your ENTIRE iTunes FOLDER to an External Drive... and then from the External Drive to your New Computer..

  • How do I back up my itunes to an external hard drive and restore from same if necessary

How do I back up my entire itunes to an external hard drive and restore from same if necessary.
    Thanks

This is where iTunes stores backups for different operating systems: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946
I do not use a Windows machine, have a Windows Vista Dell I rarely startup now.  But, from what I remember with Win boxes is, you will have to create on the external hard drive a file system like that one iTunes normally uses, and then in the iTunes preferences or control panel edit the location for the storage to specify the name of the external hard drive, or its letter code, with the name of that file system you created on the exernal drive.
I would also move all of the files from the internal file system to the external since you have now told iTunes that is where they are...before deleting from the internal drive, test iTunes to see that it goes where you want it to go.

    Hey jcaqualung,
Thanks for the question. I understand that you are experiencing issues with iTunes on your Windows Vista machine. The following resource may provide a solution. I would also recommend installing iTunes on the internal hard drive of your computer, as opposed to the external drive.

  • Backup and restoring itunes library from external hard drive?

is there a way to backup and restore my itunes library to external hard drive and not through the internal itunes backup utility cos i have over 20gbs of music and i want to keep my album art and renamed songs etc. because i will be reformating my pc and dont want to go through painful task of manually adding stuff again.

    Try this...
*Fast backup for iTunes library (Windows Only)*
Grab SyncToy 2.0, a free tool from MS. Use it to create a backup copy of your iTunes library & any other media folders onto another hard drive or network share. After making the initial backup copy use SyncToy to periodically synchronise the backup copy with your library and only the changed files will be copied saving lots of time.
When the time comes to reformat your PC, do a final sync, then open iTunes & deauthorise the PC, reformat & rebuild Windows, copy the backup folders back to the same location as they were previously, install iTunes and it should all work perfectly.

  • Installing itunes to an external hard drive

There are similar topics about this but none that answer the question.
I do not wish just to move my library to an external hard drive as other posts have assumed.
I wish to install the itunes application to an external hard drive so it can be run on a different computer on which I do not have administrator privaledges to be able to install itunes directly (both computers I am using in order to attempt this are running windows 7 64 bit).
I have tried installing it and changing the folder, but on running get the error "Apple Application Support not found (windows error 2)".
I then unpacked the Apple installer package using WinRar and installed both "AppleApplicationSupport.msi" and "AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi" directly to the external hard drive, but I still get the same error when trying to run itunes.
I am unable to copy the installation folders created by Apple Application Support / Mobil Device Support to the appropriate location on the C: drive where they would be installed by default in ...program files(x86)/common files/apple/.... due to not having administrator privelleges to modify files on the C: drive.
Am I flogging a dead horse or is there a way I can get itunes to successfully install and run independantly from an external hard drive?

iTunes and Quicktime need to be installed on the boot drive. You can keep your music library anywhere you want, including on an external drive (that's were I've got mine).
Once you've installed iTunes, open the preferences and go to Advanced and select where you'd like your music stored. Keep in mind that, if you store your music on an external drive, you will always need to make sure it's up and running before launching iTunes.
    Best of luck.

  • How do i transfer music from itunes to an external hard drive

I'm Trying to transfer music from my iTunes library to an external hard drive. how do I go about it.

If you have set iTunes to organize your library (under Edit > Preferences > Advanced) then all you need to do is:
with iTunes not running, copy your entire iTunes library (by default, C:\Users\user_name\Music\iTunes) to your external hard drive - if the latter is drive X, you end up with X:\iTunes containing:
    Album Artwork (folder)
iTunes Media (folder) containing (the exact list of folders varies with the types of content in your library):
    Audiobooks (folder)
    Automatically Add to iTunes (folder)
Music (folder - this will contain one subfolder per artist, each containing one subfolder per album)
    Podcasts (folder)
    TV Shows (folder)
    iTunes Preferences.plist (file)
    Previous iTunes Libraries (folder)
    iTunes Library Extras.itdb (file)
    iTunes Library Genius.itdb (file)
iTunes Library.itl (file - this is the iTunes database)
    iTunes Library.xml (file)
    sentinel (hidden file)
When everything has been copied, hold down SHIFT while starting iTunes.  You'll see this prompt:
Select Choose Library ... and browse to the iTunes folder on your external drive.  Select the iTunes Library.itl file and click Open.
iTunes is now running with the complete library (database, media and supporting files) on the external drive.
If you haven't been allowing iTunes to organize your library (which means that some media may be stored in other locations, i.e., not all under C:\Users\user_name\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media) then you need to do the following prior to the steps described above.
In iTunes, go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced and check the Keep iTunes Media folder organized and Copy files to iTunes Media folder ...
Then select File > Library > Organize Library ...  In the next dialog check the Consolidate files option and (if not grayed-out) Reorganize files ..., then click OK.
iTunes will then reorganize your media so that you can follow the procedure to copy the complete library to your external HDD.
Last point: once you've done this I strongly recommend that you get a second external drive and use this to take a regular backup of your library,

  • I recently restored my laptop and also iTunes from an external hard drive, but when I play songs, it says the original file could not be found. How do I locate and fix this?

I recently restored my laptop with Windows 7 and imported my iTunes library from my external hard drive. When I try to play songs, it says it cannot and that the original file could not be located. How do I fix this?

  • How to get bought movies from itunes on-to external hard drive?

Hey guys. I have iomega external hard as a backup. I've had it since june 2010, love it. I need to delete some things off my hard drive to free up some space, I thought I would do my movies. I can see that my itunes folder has been backed-up. My question is this; before I delete my movies off my hard drive (the ones I've purchased through itunes) how can I tell if my movies are in with the itunes folder? Wouldn't it show a folder or a list of my purchased movies?
When I go to my itunes folder all I see is my music and apps I've purchased, not movies.
I just want to make sure i see them in a folder, so once I delete them off my hard drive, i then can go to my external hard drive to see if they actually got backed-up.
    Thanks.

  • How do I manage and catalogue photos from an external hard drive

My new laptop is fast, but does not have a huge amount of storage.  Therefore, the store advised I keep the photos on an external hard drive  However, when I am in elements and want to have my list of folders - under folders - so I can then catalogue them - it keeps asking me to import the photos.

Drag the folder containing them there in the Finder. If you're dragging an iPhoto library and not a collection of loose photos, it needs to be put on a drive, partition, or disk image formatted as Mac OS Extended.

I recently purchased an Ipod shuffle and, not being familiar with downloading and computer products, am having difficulties figuring it out.  I clicked on the download button, then after less than a minute it went to another screen that said it was downloaded and that was it.  I found the download in my download file but there was no instructions or button to install it.  Can someone please give me some step by step instructions on what I am to do so that I can start using my ipod shuffle.
