If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.

I suspect you have a 2G iPod. Those can only go to iOS 4.2.1.
    Identifying iPod models
    iPod touch (3rd generation)
iPod touch (3rd generation) features a 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen multi-touch display and 32 GB or 64 GB flash drive. You can browse the web with Safari and watch YouTube videos with Wi-Fi. You can also search, preview, and buy songs from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store on iPod touch.
The iPod touch (3rd generation) can be distinguished from iPod touch (2nd generation) by looking at the back of the device. In the text below the engraving, look for the model number. iPod touch (2nd generation) is model A1288, and iPod touch (3rd generation) is model A1318.

  • How can I download podcasts on iPod Touch? (I have the RSS feed.)

I have the RSS feed of a podcast that I'd like to download (not just stream) and play on my iPod Touch 4G running iOS 6. I have the Podcasts App (purple icon) and the Music App (brownish-orange icon).
What must I do? When I tap the Podcasts App, It says "You can subscribe to podcasts in Top Charts or the Podcasts Store".  Is it possible to bypass Top Charts and the Podcasts Store and just load the RSS feed URL into some app? I don't think the podcast I want to add is found in either Top Charts or the Podcasts Store.

You are correct my response was supposed to be completely useless for this thread because it is my pet peeve when somebody says 'iTouch'  Please see the picture below to see that the OP did indeed use 'iTouch'.
If you look carefully at your first reply it says 'iPod Touch', looks like they changed it after I said something.
Seeing as I am batting 1.000 might as well ask if you know anything about https://discussions.apple.com/message/21829555#21829555

How do I transfer files to/from GoodReader?
There are several ways to do that:
Computer-to-GoodReader: using USB cable. Read more here.
Computer-to-GoodReader: using WiFi-connection. If your device and computer are connected to the same WiFi network, use WiFi-transfer window to transfer your files wirelessly. See the WiFi File Transfer Manual.
Internet-to-GoodReader: use built-in web-browser to browse for files to download, or enter their URLs to start downloading immediately. See the Web Downloads Manual.
Other apps-to-GoodReader: use inter-app Document Interchange (a.k.a. Open In... functionality) to exchange files between apps (including Apple's Mail app to transfer E-Mail attachments to GoodReader). Works both ways - GoodReader can open files stored in other apps, and other apps can open files stored in GoodReader. Apple's Document Interchange works only with apps that explicitly support this feature.
E-Mail Servers-to-GoodReader: access E-Mail servers via IMAP or POP3 protocol to download e-mail attachments. Read more here.
WebDAV Servers-to-GoodReader: connect to servers like MobileMe iDisk, box.net or any other WebDAV server on the cloud to download and upload files. Read more here. You can also sync files and folders.
Google Docs-to-GoodReader: connect to Google Docs to download and upload files. Read more here.
Dropbox-to-GoodReader: connect to Dropbox to download and upload files. Read more here. You can also sync files and folders.
SugarSync-to-GoodReader: connect to SugarSync to download and upload files. Read more here. You can also sync files and folders.
FTP Servers-to-GoodReader: connect to FTP servers to download and upload files. Read more here (FTP protocol is insecure, use SFTP access for confidential documents). You can also sync files and folders.
SFTP Servers-to-GoodReader: connect to SFTP servers to download and upload files. Read more here. You can alsosync files and folders.
AFP Servers-to-GoodReader: connect to AFP servers (Mac shared folders, Apple Time Capsule, etc.) to download and upload files. Read more here. You can also sync files and folders.
Other iPhone/iPod/iPad-to-GoodReader: if your device is on the same WiFi network with another iPhone/iPod/iPad with any application that supports WebDAV access - for example, another copy of GoodReader, or any other WebDAV-capable file sharing application - you can use the Connect to Servers feature to exchange files with that application. Read more here.
Device Photo Album: import pictures and recorded videos from and export pictures to it
How do I automatically sync files and folders to remote servers? Please find the manual here.
How do I delete a file that I no longer need?Either swipe a file name from left to right, or use our File Management features.
How do I save a file from Safari to GoodReader? If you browse the Web with Safari, and open a file that is interesting to you, there is a way of saving this file into GoodReader's internal local storage, so you will be able to view this file with GoodReader without loading it from the Internet every time (like it happens in Safari). To save a file from Safari to GoodReader:
open the file of interest in Safari
tap Safari's address bar (the keyboard will appear)
go to the very beginning of the file's URL address, where the http:// or https:// part is
add a single letter g in front of the address, so you'll get ghttp:// or ghttps:// instead of http:// or https://
press Go on the keyboard (this will close Safari and start GoodReader)
the file will start to download into GoodReader automatically (check Web Downloads section to find it)
If you plan to do this often, you can simplify this process substantially. In GoodReader's settings, General section, tap the button called Put special address to clipboard. Then go to Safari and create a new bookmark. Bookmarking absolutely any page will do. Name this bookmark, for example, Save to GoodReader. Then press the bookmark button, and then Edit. Select this new bookmark. Now Safari will let you modify an address of this bookmark. Delete the old address and paste the text from the clipboard (GoodReader has prepared this special text for you). Save the modified bookmark address. Selecting this bookmark when a page of interest is opened is the same as adding the g letter in front of this page's address.
Please note that this technique doesn't always work with secure servers. If it doesn't, then try browsing for this file in GoodReader's built-in web-browser, rather than in Safari.

iTunes has taken my money but no song has been downloaded onto my ipod touch or computer, How do I get my song or money back?
I cannot seem to trace where the purchase went but it money is gone from account and I have no song.
    Please help!

    Starting at the end:
    - When the movie or tv show does transfer onto your iphone/ipod touch you will be able to see it in the expanded view of your device in the "DEVICES" section.
    - If the files are not on your device, then:
-- confirm you have SD or HD-SD video. HD-only content will not play and probably will not even sync. iTunes seems to reliably have SD versions with their HD distributions so this should not be an issue
-- confirm you are synch-ing the content to the ipod device by browsing the DEVICE view's Movie or TV Show tabs to confirm the movie or episode is 'checked'
    - If the files are on the iPod and you cannot find them, check your Settings: General for Restrictions.  If you restrict, for example the movies to "G" rating. PG and higher movies will sync but you will not be able to find them on the iPod!

  • Ios5 for ipod touch 3G

How do I download ios5 for my 32GB ipod touch 3G?  I have itunes 10.5.3.3 and when I "check for upgrade" itunes says I have the most current version of 4.2.1.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled itunes and reset my ipod but nothing has worked so far.  Any suggestions for how to upgrade?

    Hi there,
what year/ month your iPod was purchased, just to verify the Generation of your ipod if possible.
It should be straight forward to upgrade to iOS 5,
notifying you that you are running the current version -  4.2.1 means that the ipod can not go higher than this afaik

  • HT4623 How do I download ios5 on this device

How do I  download ios5 on my iPod

If it's a first generation iPod touch, it can't be updated past 3.1.3.
If it's a second generation iPod touch, it can't be updated past 4.2.1. This includes 8GB models sold at the same time as the third generation ones.
If it's a third generation iPod touch, connect it to iTunes on a computer and update it from there.
If it's a fourth or fifth generation model, you can't; following the instructions for the third generation ones will update it to 6.0.1.

i cant download instagram on ipod touch 2g how can i update so i can version 4.2.1

You can't. The 2G can only go as high as iOS 4.22.1 because of the hardware on the 2G. Instagram requires:
equirements: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 5.0 or later. This app is optimized for iPhone 5.

  • Download Applications on iPod Touch

Can user download applications on the iPod Touch?
Or I can use only apps that I have on my Touch?

first, how come above you say 'my ipod touch' and now you say you want to buy one?!
Anyway! the ipod touch is amazing!
    * the internet feature is almost like the safari on mac or pc (im using safari on my windows pc!)
    * the music download is cool and allows you to download music from almost anywhere (aslong as there is wifi)
    * the touch screen tops it off! making using it easy and fun- alot easier than a click wheel
    * the picture viewer is also good, and you can zoom in by 'pinching' the picture!
    * also the music is quite good quality, not as good as the ipod video though!
    * youtube is cool, and when you are in a wifi zone you can watch all the music from youtube!
it seams, so far the only downside is the music quality, but unless you have really sensative ears (to sound quality) you wont notice it!
    hope this helps!

For some reason, iOS 6 has decided to download on my iPod Touch through WiFi. I didn't request it, nothing is set to automatically update in the Touch settings, or iTunes. It seemed to start downloading when I  synced the Touch. I've disconnected the Touch from WiFi temporarily. How can I cancel the download, or will there be an option when it's done downloading to cancel the install?
    Thanks for any help...

You should really read the manual.
"How do you restore from backup? "
Restore.  When given the choice, choose to use backup.
"And how can I check to see if the pics and videos are on my computer somewhere first??"
They would only be where you put them.  What program did you use to import them?  Pics/vids taken with ipod are not part of the sync process at all.  You should be importing them just as you would with any digital camera.
If you did not import them, then they are not on your computer.
