Ok.. Funambol and FunV10 did not work for me, so this is what I did...
I created a gmail account, imported the contacts from aol, then used microsoft exchange to add the gmail contacts to my ipad2.. I don't think this will create a sync, but it will get all your current aol contacts onto the ipad
Step-by-step:
1) created a gmail account
2) open your new gmail account settings (gear icon on top right)
3) go to the "accounts and imports" tab
4) choose "import mail and contacts"
5) follow the pop-up window requests
*** the import process says that it may take as long as 2 days for gmail to get all the mail and contacts, but my experience was almost instant
6) on your ipad (mine is an ipad2 running iOS6.0) go into "settings"
7) then.. "Mail, Contacts, Calendars"
8) then.. "Add Account"
9) then.. "Microsoft Exchange" DO NOT CHOOSE GMAIL or AOL
10) then.. enter your gmail account and password (description is up to you, i used the gmail email address) ... click "next"
11) then enter the server "m.google.com" .. leave the Domain empty and enter your gmail email address in the "Username" field
12) choose the information you want to get (I only chose "contacts")

You can use iTunes to sync the two devices. See the KB article, iOS: How to transfer or sync content to your computer and iTunes for Mac: sync contacts, calendar and other info.
If you want to use iCloud, your MacBook needs to use at least OS 10.7.4 or later. See Set up iCloud on all your Devices.

Depends on how big the file is. If itis only a couple of pages, or mostly text, the easiest way would be to e mail it. If it is a very large file you are going to need wifi. Take both pads to starbucks, and e mail it from there. Or if you have wifi, use drop box, for example.
Your other choice, avoiding wifi would be a bluetooth type transfer. There is an app call bluetooth file lite that reads like it will do what you need. The good news is it is free. The bad news is that it has terrible ratings. For grins, i am installing it now on a pad and a phone, and will see if it works.
With a bluetooth method, you need both devices in the same place. If you are trying to send your file across country, bluetooth will not work for you. you need e mail or drop box type solution, and if the file is big, you will almost certainly need wifi.

-under a new contact in name type the names of the people. Next, I'm not sure if this will work, but for phone just put a different hone down.
-Also tou could just make a group message. In messages just type all the names in the to field after you tap compose.

The Settings > General > Software Update option only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, if you have iOS 4 then you will need to do the update via your computer's iTunes.
Connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases. You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button

You need to select and sync them in one go. Photos that you sync from your computer can't be deleted directly in the Photos app, instead they are deleted by not including them in the next photo sync - so you've effectively been telling iTunes to replace the folder that you've just synced with a new folder

If you are syncing your iPad with your computer, one way to delete all your contacts might be to connect the iPad to the computer, then in iTunes select the iPad in the sidebar. Once you've done that, go to the Info tab. Uncheck the box for syncing Contacts, then in the lower right, hit Apply. All the Contacts on your iPad will be gone.
You haven't asked for solutions to use Snow Leopard with iCloud, but there are some solutions for Mail, Address Book and Calendar.
