Default software is updated when Apple releases an iOS upgrade. If your iPad is currently running iOS 4.x.x and you wish to upgrade to iOS 5.x.x, then connect your iPad to the computer, open iTunes, select your iPad in the iTunes sidebar, click on the Summary tab in the main window, then click on the Update button.
Please get the iPad iOS 4 user guide.
Please Get the iPad User Manual for iOS 5
I suggest you read your manual for help with the basic use of your device.

  • How can i download the upgrade without backing up texts?

I want to download the upgrade, but I don't want my text messages backed up.
Is there a way to do this?

Is this for a new MacBook Pro? If you are entitled to a free upgrade, but are having trouble with the Mac App Store and can't download Lion, call Applecare and explain the situation and see if they can help you. It's always possible that the Mac App Store has been extra busy lately and for some reason may not have processed your request properly.
First, though, check in your applications folder to be sure that the installer isn't already there. It's called "Install Mac OS X LIon.app". Step one is to download the installer. Step two is to run it. It will vanish from your Application folder after it runs, so if you want to make a copy of the installer, make one before you run it.
    Good luck!

Because you have let it become outdated. iOS 4 or earlier require iTunes on the computer to update. Any newer version, you can update over the air.

  • How do I download my upgrade when Apple Store choices are wrong?

I'm running Snow Leopard, and bought the Mountain Lion upgrade.  I received an email receipt from Apple with numbers and links.  I don't have the App Store app.
When I go to the app store the only choice is to upgrade to Mavericks.  I don't want Mavericks. I bought Mountain Lion, but don't see any way to download it.  In 20 years on computers, this is the dumbest upgrading experience I have ever had with any software, much less an operating system.  They could hardly make this process more convoluted and obtuse.
When I went to the 'contact Apple' page, they ask what OS I'm running, but only give two choices, Lion, or Mountain Lion, which are both wrong.
Does anyone have the magic beans I need to make the giant fall off the beanstalk so I can download the software I bought?
    thanks for any help,
    Greg

Ok, after jumping through a series of hoops, I got Mountain Lion istalled.  Here's what happened.
The reason I couldn't find Mountain Lion in the App Store is that it isn't there!  I wrote them via the Help link, but in the end had to call the 800 number.  The support guy used Screen Sharing, which meant he could see my desktop, so if anyone calls support have your Apple ID written down on paper so you don't inadvertently reveal too much information.
Tha App Store has a special section where they keep Mountain Lion.  He led me to that page so I could clearly see the 'Download' button before I ended the support session.
Haivng read about 4-hour download times, I was concerned about tying up my computer during the day when I had computing to do.  I had no way of knowing how busy the Apple site was, but it was mid-day on a weekday, so I figured it would not be too bad. Also, I assumed that most everyone on my Time Warner Cable network would be at work, so I didn't expect too much congestion on my end.
As it turned out, downloading the 4+ GB file was waaay easier than expected.  At around 1pm Friday I started the download, it took about 28% of my massive 8-core processor and I averaged about 5MB / second.  My ISP connection is what they call 'Standard', the 3rd out of the 5 speeds TWC offers. The entire file was finished downloading in about 30 minutes!  During the download, there's no visible progress bar, and the 'Download' button was not grayed out, so the only way I knew the file was downloading was by the sound of my hard drive working.  To be sure the file was on its way, I opened my Mac's Activity Monitor.
When the download was complete, the installer asked me where I wanted the upgrade to be installed.  I chose an empty partition on my hard drive that I had cleared off for this purpose.  Mountain Lion was quickly installed.
With my partition divided in half, I continue to be able to run Snow Leopard on one half, and Mountain Lion on the other.  On reboot, after the screen turns black, I can hold down the Option key until a screen opens that offers me the choice of which OS I want to boot into. When I bought this Mac Pro in 2010, the first thing I did was partition the hard drive into 2 parts, and reinstall Snow Leopard on one.  For the last three years I've been using the non-boot partition for storage. Running two operating systems like this makes it easy to work on one OS from the other.  Installing DiskWarrior 4.4 on each partition enables me to repair both.  DiskWarrior has saved my butt more times than I can count during the dozen-plus years I've been running Macs.
I ran the install from my Snow Leopard partition, so after it was complete, the Install Mountain Lion application appeared in my Snow Leopard Applications folder.  The support guy told me that the Mountain Lion installer automatically creates a hidden Restore partition, in case I want to reinstall and start from scratch in the future.  Nevertheless, I wanted to save the Mountain Lion installer onto a portable hard drive.  I partitioned a new Seagate USB 3, 1 TB drive so as to have a tiny 5 GB partition as 1st, and the rest of the drive as 2nd. BTW, the first partition on a drive is a bit faster than the second, so if you are creating a boot partition, make it the first one.
When booting to the Mountain Lion partition for the first time, excessive hard drive activity was heard.  After the OS had fully loaded, reading operations went on and on for ten minutes or more, indicating to me that there was some kind of problem.  The Mac being a Unix platform, I figured there was a problem with Permissions.  I opened Disk Utility, and hit Repair Permissions.  This stopped the excessive reading, but it still wasn't exactly 'normal'.  I booted back into Snow Leopard, and surprisingly the excessive hard drive activity was happening there too. (It hadn't been happening before the new install).  I ran diskWarrior 4.4 on the Mountain Lion partition, and sure enough many 'red' error notices were seen.  As DW users know, this indicates serious problems.  After DW rebuilt the ML desktop database, all was well.  The next time I booted into Mountain Lion, no excessive disk activity was heard.  For symmetry's sake, I installed DW on the Mountain Lion partition, and rebuilt the Snow Leopard database.  Now everything is copacetic on both partitions!
Kappy's very clear instructions on how to put a Bootable Backup of the installer on a portable hard drive can be found here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/24083335?ac_cid=tw123456#24083335
Hope this helps anyone who is upgrading, now or in the future.
    Greg
ps. the Apple Support guys are not trained to do anything like what I describe.  Unless you happen to run into an experienced computer user who thinks outside of the box, all you will get from them is advice on standard installations.

  • Downloading iTunes upgrade 7.1.1

please help. for a few months now everytime i open iTunes it tells me there is an upgrade available which I have tried to download several times with no luck. now i have just bought a new iPod shuffle and cant use it! Everytime I try to download 7.1.1 it says "not a valid win32 application" What the **** does that mean? and how do I download this upgrade or put music on my new shuffle without upgrading....As one of the other topics suggested....I am sick of it, upgrades are usually so simple!

"the feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable...Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'iTunes.msi' in the box below."
with that one, let's try the following procedure.
first, head into your Add/Remove programs and uninstall your QuickTime. if it goes, good. if it doesn't, we'll just attend to it when we attend to itunes.
next, download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. use it to clear any existing itunes and/or QuickTime installation configuration information from the PC.
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
next, use the the following document as a guide for manual removal of leftover itunes and quicktime program files:

now try another itunes install. does it go through properly this time?

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
Tip 2 - If you're updating via wifi, place your iPad close to your router to preclude getting a corrupted download.

  • How to download PPC 10.4.11 system upgrades on a MacBook Pro intel computer

I have both PPC4 and PPC5 computers running 10.4.11 that need security updates with some regularity. My internet connection is dial-up. I have been having the local Apple reseller make cds or dvds of the upgrades I need but this is getting expensive. I have tried downloading the upgrades on my Mac Book Pro (intel) running 10.4.11 at our local library which has high speed internet. However, I'm doing something wrong. My attempts at having what I've downloaded to the MacBook Pro install on my PPC's have all failed. Can someone give me a step by step set of instructions. My ignorance abounds!

Hi sigrun, and a warm welcome to the forums!
It's not really you, it's this day & age of everything being automatic so you don't have to think!
Normally when you go to download at Apple, Apple checks what computer you're on and only allows updates for that type of computer, Mac and Windows too.
Most can be gotten around by going to this URL...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
    Which looks very similar to...
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/
Yet this second one is the artificially "intelligent" one.
And of course Software Update won't find anything but for the Mac you're on.
Occasionally some downloads will still try to out think you, (iTunes, iirc), and you'll need to post here for a request for somebody to get the actual URL of that particular flavor of that particular download you need.

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least a Xeon or Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) CPU and 2GB of RAM, and if it does, click here and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.

Sounds like you downloaded the OS X Mavericks 10.9.5 Update or Combo Update. Neither will work on a version of OS X prior to OS X Mavericks. Those are only used to update an existing install of OS X Mavericks. The Combo will update any version from 10.9.0 thru 10.9.4. The Update will only update version 10.9.4.
You need the full installer of OS X Mavericks from the App Store. However, the App Store no longer offers OS X Mavericks. Yosemite is the new FREE OS X.
