How do I drag / drop larger .psd or .jpg to Adobe Illustrator?

I am trying to use Adobe Illustrator to create 1-page advertisements for magazine publications. These advertisements have text, pictures and my business logo. Unfortunately, I can not drag my logo from Photoshop Elements (nor Photoshop) to Adobe Illustrator. The .psd of the logo file is 4 MB in size and a .jpg of the logo file is 700 in size.   I have no problem dragging small pictures that are ~150K in size.
Can someone please advise how to place the logo onto my Adobe Illustrator work space?
Is there a way to import the larger .psd or .jpg logo file directly into Adobe Illustrator?
Is there a better Adobe application to use for these ads?   (From a learning curve, I am comfortable with Illustrator and DreamWeaver and still learning Photoshop.)
My applications: Adobe CS3 Suite for web publishing as well as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Photoshop Elements, Premiere Elements and Adobe Illustrator
My system: 8 GB Ram, MS Vista

That works if all the data is available as a file at the point where you start the drag.
In my case it is not, I have got to go get it from the database, and that can take up to 30 seconds.
So I want to do that bit when the drop happens (which users are used to as for instance when they copy a large file in Windows at the moment), not when the drag starts (which is very difficult to provide any visual feedback for).

Yes, command+click will work to select multiple comments. However, I'm working with some PDFs that have a substantial number of comments and this is taking quite some time to select them all. Additionally, it is tricky to click some of them, and if I mis-click, all the selection work is undone and everything becomes deselected. I'd like to know if there is a simpler way to select many multiple comments, such as a simple drag selection in Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.

How do you ungroup or expand a pie chart in Adobe Illustrator CS6? This functionality seems to have been removed. Say I'd like to remove the legend: before, I could ungroup the chart, release its link to the data, and then delete the legend with my white mouse. Object > Expand no longer works either. This is supremely frustrating.

In the end, I closed the dialogue box that shows the data, and was able to choose Object > Ungroup. Then it prompted me saying: "The selection contains a graph. After a graph is ungrouped you will no longer be able to access its graph style, its data or change its graph designs." - Which is what I was looking for. So in short, when the data is open, everything under Object will be greyed out. Additionally, Object > Expand no longer works in CS6.
As a note, before I figured all this out, I resorted to a quick clipping mask to get rid of the legend, since selecting with the direct selection tool (A) and deleting was met with a 'you can't do that' prompt. That worked nicely, and kept the data.

If you mean the Bookmarks Bar (not the toolbar above it) you can add items to that by choosing Bookmark from the Share icon (rectangle with arrow coming out of it) and then choosing to add the bookmark to the Bookmarks Bar section in the popup that appears.

In a previous version of either FF or Windows, I could drag/drop the TITLE w/URL of a FF bookmark.
In 3.6 I can only d/d the URL.

Good questions... I'll have to try and figure out when the problem first happened - I was thinking it was when I upgraded to Safari 5.1.4 but that might not be the case... I'll try your suggestions to see if any of them eliminate the problem (I have restarted recenlty and that didn't fix it) but I'll try repairing permissions,etc. Thanks!
hmmm... Mcbuffy: are you implying that you *don't* get the webloc when dragging an image out of Safari and that this isn't a caused by change to Safari but is a big/conflict in mine?

How to improve Drag&Drop?

Hey guys,
we have a graphical editor that we realized with GEF. In this graphical editor you are able to create a process by dragging and dropping elements from the palette and connecting them.
One nice feature we have is to drag and drop an element on a transition which inserts this element on this position in the "chain".
The problem we have is that the area to drop the element from the palette is pretty hard to hit. The line itself has a width of 1px. Below the transition the drag area starts exactly where the line starts, so it's hard to hit it from below. Above the transition it's a bit easier because there is a small area of probably 16px. Which is nice because from this side it's much easier to hit the transition. The worst case is a vertical transition because on the sides left and right there is no extended drop area which makes it very hard to hit the transition.
My question is where I can influence this behaviour. I want to improve the user experience for the drag&drop and so I want to extend the drop area for the transition. Is this possible in GEF? If yes, where do I have to look? For a transition it seems to be harder than for an element that has a fixed size.

How to convert a .psd file into .ai (adobe illustrator)

Hi Guys,
I have a very high quality multi layer .psd file that I need to convert to adobe illustrator in order to export them into autocad.
As I'm very in exprienced, Ive tried to merge the layers in the psd file and then use Export -> 'Path to Illustrator', however when I open the newly created .ai file, it open a dialog box called 'Convert to Artboards' and whatever option i choose (either Legacy Artboard or Crop Area(s)' my new illustrator file seems to be empty.
I appreciate any file anyone can offfer.

1. Turn on your computer and launch the Illustrator program.
2. Open a new document by clicking File>New in Illustrator’s menu bar.
3. To open your Photoshop document, go to File>Open and then select the document you want to open when prompted.
   •   Placing PSD files into Illustrator (Editable)
This method is ideal if you wish to incorporate a Photoshop document within an existing Illustrator document which can then make the PSD file editable within Illustrator.
1. Launch the Illustrator program, select File>Place
2. Locate the PSD file you want to import and click “Place”. Make sure the “Link” option is not selected.
Placing or opening an unlinked Photoshop file will prompt a dialog box with options, choose the most appropriate option and then click “OK”.
• Convert Layers to Objects: This option will convert the Photoshop layers into Illustrator objects to be able preserve masks, transparency and blending modes.
                             • Flatten Layers to a Single Object: This option will flatten all the Photoshop layers into a single layer to preserve the look and appearance of the image; however individual Photoshop layers will no longer be editable.
   •   Placing PSD files into Illustrator (Not Editable)
This method is ideal for incorporating your Photoshop files in an existing Illustrator document. Although the PSD file will no longer be editable it will be able to maintain a link to your original Photoshop file.

**The one time it did not work for me and appeared black was because of shadows (hue/saturation adjustment layer). So I compared the old .psd file, that converted fine, to the current one I was trying got send. One of the differences was the introduction of shadows by duplicating the fonts and image shapes, then merging them to a single image with hue/saturation adjustments. When adjusting the hue/saturation, it appears in a separate layer that was locked to next to image that was just produced. Some reason that was the bug that kept Illustrator from placing the .psd file in Illustrator. The solution was to merge the hue/saturation layer with the image layer. Now it’s back to normal.

How can I change the units in perspective mode in Adobe Illustrator?

When I'm making a drawing for ex. a rectangle on the left grid, the dimensions of the rectangle are displayed in points (pt). But I want those dimensions in inches. How can I change those dimensions. I've tried form Edit > Preferences > Units... but nothing changes. My dimensions on adobe Illustrator are shown in pt and not as the following image.

View > Perspective grid > Define grid

In this way, I would not have to create a new event on a different date that is very similar to an existing one.

(Days on the Y Axis and events for that day on the X axis)
I want to draw each event as a rectangle. Also, I want to be able to drag the rectangles, and draw
them using rubberbanding (i.e hold the left mouse button down and drag to create a new event)
Is it a good idea to use Java 2D to create the above kind of functionality ?
Or should I be trying AWT or Swing instead ?
I think it will be easier to get the click and mouse move events if I draw each event as an AWT component.
But I am not sure how I am going to be able to handle drawing the events at the exact co-ordinates if
I use AWT.
Basically, I am stuck on whether to choose Java 2D or to choose AWT/Swing ?
Please guide me through your experience.

I have developed a script to perform some Custom action in Illustrator. I want to make this script run from a a File Menu Item so it can be invoked easily. Is there a way to customize Illustarator to add a new menu item or modify the existing menu tems functions. For example if the script needs to be invoked when the user click "Save" is there a way that could be done.

When you mean by limited menu location does it mean a plugin could be added under "File" as options or AI only allows it under "Window" where you launch the plugins from normally.

How do i open a Corel Draw crd. file in Adobe Illustrator CS5? ASAP

I use Adobe Suite CS5 and a client supplied me a Corel Draw cdr. file, so i need to bring that into Illustrator CS5 and i have no idea of which version of Corel Draw was used to save the file, and i have no more details about the file. Does anybody have a solution?

Like AI files, Draw files can be saved with our without compression. AI cannot open compressed .cdr files. This is a very common situation among AI users who think that AI cannot open their Draw files, because the collections of kazillions of clipart files which always ship with Draw are saved with compression.
So get your client to check whether he saved the file with compression turned on. If so, ask him to send it again, but without the compression option.

How do I re-size and print a barcode in Adobe Illustrator?

I know this is a very, very simple thing to do, however I have no experience in AI. My barcode vendor generated barcode files that were in AI, so I have no choice but to work from them (I think. I can choose from several file types but I chose jpeg and it generated the images in AI) I need to re-size the barcode to fit a very small label: 1/2" X 3/4"- Avery 5418.

You need to create vector artwork to create and adapt/resize/edit barcodes properly.
You may have a look at the Illustrator forum where we have quite a few threads about different aspects of the subject.

You may type in barcode in the box called Type to filter by text and wait for the relevant ones to turn up. I have done it here:
