How Do I Edit My 'Open With' Contextual Menu?

When I right click on an image file and select Open With I get a long list of options. Many of them are .exe files and look like actions (Make GIF 64 colors.exe for example).
How can I edit this list? Some information I found mentioned editing the info.plist file in Photoshop, so I'm sure it's a PS issue.
Thanks

Exactly - that's what I thought. Most of those seemed to have disappeared since I nervously uninstalled CS2 (I upgraded from 2 to 4), although I've heard that things can creep back as you use the apps again. I also renamed the plist file.
However it would be nice to be able to edit what appears there.  I'll give that link a shot - thanks for that.

  • Clearing the Finder "Open With" contextual menu ?

After the install I now have duplicates of all the stuff I used to have in the open with menu.
Like VLC and then under it VLC (version number).
    How do I clear it?

*Mac OS X: Clearing the Finder "Open With" contextual menu*
Ever wondered how to "clear" the Finder's Open With... contextual menu choices of any extraneous or older applications? (This is the menu that appears when you control-click or "right-click" a document icon.)
If your Open With... menu is filled with too many choices to easily scroll through, you can remove the less-commonly used choices. These steps will clear the list except for the most current applications that can open your document.
From the Finder Go menu, choose Home.
Open the Library folder in the Home window.
    Open the Preferences folder.
    Find com.apple.LaunchServices.plist.
Rename "com.apple.LaunchServices", such as to "com.apple.LaunchServices.old", or move it to the Trash.
The next time you use the Open With.... contextual menu in the Finder, only current applications will be listed. Some items may return if the application that controls them adds itself back to the list.

  • Clean up Finder "Open With" contextual menu in Yosemite

How do I clean up the Finder "Open With" contextual menu in Yosemite? I have several duplicate and obsolete entries in mine. There are several articles out there that show how to do this for previous versions of Mac OS X, but the instructions don't line up with what I see in Yosemite.
Also, the entries I have in the menu are from a version of Windows through a version of VMware Fusion, both of which versions I haven't used in a long while. I did a clean install of Yosemite this morning (on an erased disk) so I'm curious how the menu was populated. Did it somehow get inherited through the iCloud Keychain?
    Thanks for any help!

  • How do I rebuild the 'open with' contextual menus?

I'm running the latest version of OSX 10 Mountain Lion… the contextual menu 'open with' section shows multiple instances of the same programs, sometimes 6 or 8 of them. How can I rebuild the menu so that it shows only one copy of each program?

    Rebuild LaunchServices Database
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder.  At the prompt paste in the following command in its entirety:
    find /System/Library/Frameworks -type f -name "lsregister" -exec {} -kill -seed -r \;
Press RETURN.  Wait for the Terminal prompt to return after which you can quit the Terminal.

  • How do we add apps to the 'Open With' contextual menu?

After I updated to Mavericks, all of the apps, except the Apple ones, were blown away (eg. Word and Excel in my VM).
How do I put them back?

'Open With > Other' would not show the apps in my VM.  I tried.
I tried something different.  I left Word open in my Parallels (Vista) VM and ignored it for a while to see if Maverics would pick it up eventually.
    It did.
It seems like that it takes some time for Maverics to find the apps in a VM before we can use it in the 'Open With' menu.

  • How do you edit your Open With list in Mac Mail?

I get a lot of attachments in my emails I need to open with Photoshop CC, but now that I have upgraded to Mavericks my list of default programs is gone when I right click and choose open with. Now I have to choose applications> Photoshop CC> Photoshop CC is there a way to edit the list so PSCC is an option?

If the button was there I would not have posted the fact that on my Air, in Address Book, my contacts does not have this button there!
Well, you wouldn't be the first person to miss this button in the re-designed Address Book.
If the button is not there (I can't explain why it's not for you), what about the Edit > Edit Card menu command and associated cmd-L keyboard shortcut?
Make a backup of your contacts, quit Address Book, then delete the addressbook-v22.abcddb  file from ~Library/Application Support/AddressBook. Then reload Address Book and see if that helps.

  • Open with contextual menu

My problem: When i select/highlight "Open with" option in the Finder Contextual Menu, then Finder quits. i.e. the open with menu doesn't even expand- just highlighting/hovering the cursor over it, causes Finder to crash.
This has been happening for quite some time.
    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

The free Expander shouldn't have installed any contextual menu items. Look in the "Contextual Menu Items" folders in your "Library" folder, and in the one in "Library" at the top level of your disk. If there are any files there, try moving them out, then logout, then login, and see if you still have problems.

  • Duplicate apps in "Open With" contextual menu

I've noticed this several times in the past and I just ignored it and eventually it went away. But now it's bugging me. When I right-click on a media file, Boxee shows up multiple times. Is there any way to rebuild the menus?
    Here's a screenshot if I wasn't clear enough.

It sounds like LaunchServices. These are only cache files but can get corrupted.
Launch /Utilities/Terminal and copy & paste this at the command line to rebuild LaunchServices:
    Code:
    <pre class="alt2" style="margin:0px; padding:3px; border:1px inset; width:640px; height:34px; overflow:auto">/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user</pre>
Then press return. Wait until terminal returns to the command line. Quit Terminal. After that, log out and back in or restart. Let us know

  • How can I shorten the "Open With" menu?

    Hi -
When I Control-Click on a file, say  one with an HTML extension, and move down to "Open with" I see a list of about 24 apps - only 4 of which are of interest to me for opening this HTML file.  If I right-click an XML file - the apps I'm looking for are either Dreamweaver or BBEdit - and they are way down the list of candidates.
PSD files give me the same unweildy results.  (I've got old versions of Photoshop, Flash, Dashcode, Quicktime, Illustrator and many more on that contextual list - all apps irrelevant for my work on PSD).
I tried using "Get Info" on a PSD, selected the latest Photoshop from the list of "Open with:" and clicked "Change All..." but that didn't narrow down the list very much at all - not even on that one particular file.  I still have TextWrangler, Quicktime Player 7, Dashcode, ColorSync Utility, 3 old versions of Photoshop, 3 old versions of Illustrator to name just a few apps that I wouldn't pick.
I found out the hard way that I cannot discard old versions of Adobe applications.  The new ones will not work without their ancestors on the same drive.
Its not just Adobe apps anyway.  After all - Textwrangler to open a PSD???  How was THAT association made?
Is there a way to narrow the "Open With" contextual menu list?
    TIA your experise.
    J2

I'm sure this is stored in some .plist file somewhere, but this is really more a generic Mac question, so asking it on a Mac forum is more likely to yield any answers...

  • How can I edit multiple clips with different frame rates on the same timeline

how can I edit multiple clips with different frame rates on the same timeline

You do not want to edit material from different frame rates on one timeline. You CAN do this, but it is a very bad idea - and this is why.
Once you establish the sequence frame rate - lets say it is PAL material at 25fps, any material that you drop into the sequence other than 25 fps will have to be changed to play at 25 fps. If the material you add is NTSC (29.97), FCP will DROP 5 frames per sec to bring the frame rate down to 25 fps. Which 5 get thrown away? Every 6th one. This yields a funky cadence that becomes even more complex as as there are also interlaced fields (DV/NTSC is an interlaced format). Oh, and by the way, the image sizes are different as well. DV/PAL has 576 lines of resolution and DV/NTSC has 480. FCP has to scale up the NTSC to fit the PAL frame.
You do not want FCP adjusting these things on the fly. You want to do a thoughtful (and time consuming) conversion so that you end up with all your material in one format with the best possible image from the conversion process. Compressor can do an adequate job with Frame Controls turned on. The Natress Standards Conversion FCP plugin is another way to go. A third option is to find a post house that can do the conversion for you using a hardware based process.
The good news is, once everything is in the same format, editing it will be painless and the output process very quick.
Whatever frame rate/ image size you select, I'd suggest using ProRes for the codec. It is 4:2:2 color and will withstand color correction and composting with much more grace than any variant of DV based codecs.
    Have fun.

  • Edit Finder Open With Menu

I just went to open an image from the Finder and noticed the Open With Context Menu was loaded with duplicate entries of the various applications that can open an image. Is there a way to edit this so only the current version of each application shows instead of every version installed via updates?
An example is Opera. There are 3 versions listed in the Open With Context Menu when I right click on a .swf file.

    rebuild your launch services database.
    run the following terminal command
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

I have only one of the apps installed.
How do I clear or reset the "open with" menu in the Finder?

    Rebuild LaunchServices Database
    For Tiger users
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt paste in the following command in its entirety:
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServic es.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
    Press RETURN.
For Leopard and Snow Leopard users
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt paste in the following command in its entirety:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

  • Can't open apps with contextual menu, or dragging onto dock icon

I've recently reinstalled Tiger and updated successfully with the 10.4.11 combo installer.
I've discovered that when, for example, I use the contextual menu to open a jpeg with Photoshop CS, nothing happens. If I try to drag it onto the Photoshop icon in the dock, the app will open but the file won't.
Double clicking the file opens it in Preview (default), but I sometimes want to do more than view it in preview - I want to edit it in PS. I can only open it from within PS. Also, when using Iphoto, even when I select external editor it won't open in Photoshop.
This is a new quirk and I've never had the problem before. I'd appreciate any suggestions of how I can solve this. Many thanks, Karen

Before I start trashing things, just to play it safe ... what are the consequences/downside of getting rid of those folders?
Just move them to the Desktop incase we need for some unknown reasin to put them back.
Should I just move them out one by one to see if I can isolate the problem?
Yes, you could do that, but... I think some prefs help rebuilding other prefs if present.
I have created a new "test user" - I guess I should log out/log in to see if the problem is still there before doing any throwing away of prefs, right?
    Yep!

  • How to remove application from Open With?

    Hi,
I added by accident a wrong application to a file type in Finder. Now I would like to remove this entry from the files Open With list. How could this be done?
    Thanks and best regards
    Ralph

Is it just that specific document you want to open with another application or is it all documents of the same format?
#1 Hold down Ctrl key and choose Open with. Choose the application you want to open the document with. IF you want to always open this one document with another app then the pre-chosen one hold down both the CTRl and the Option key and choose application.
#2 When you want a certain format of documents to open with another application, let us say all .rtf should open with Pages instead of Textedit, select one rtf document and use Command (apple) key and I to get the information window for this document. Somewhere in the middle you can choose with which app. to open this document with and right beneath there is another button that gives you the opportunity to open all document of the same format with the same application.
Pardon my Swenglish, but I hope you are helped by this!

  • How to make navigation tools open with every document?

    Hi -
    I'm using Acrobat 8 Professional.
Every time I open a document there are no tools at all showing.  The window shows the document and the title bar.  But I'd like to have more than that.
I finally figured out using cmd-F to get some basic navigation tools (search, page number, I-beam, hand, etc).
I would like this assortment of tools to open with every and any document I open.
    How do I accomplish this??
    TIA your input.

With Voice Over, you highlight whatever you are trying to select and then double tap anywhere on the screen to select.
So for your password of 1234 you have to
"Highlight 1, then double tap the screen, Highlight 2, the double tap the screen,... etc."
In order to remove you have 2 options:
    Option# 1 – Turn off Voice Over
Go to setting by, highlight "SETTING
Double tap screen to go into settings
Use 3 fingers to (swipe) scroll of down and highlight "GENERAL"
Double tap screen to go into general
Use 3 fingers to (swipe) scroll of down and then highlight “ACCESSIBILITY”
Double tap screen to go into accessibility
Once you are in make sure that EVERYTHING in that section are shown as “OFF”
Option #2 - Reset your Phone
Go to setting by, highlight "SETTING
Double tap screen to go into settings
Use 3 fingers to (swipe) scroll of down and highlight "GENERAL"
Double tap screen to go into general
Use 3 fingers to (swipe) scroll of down and then highlight “RESET”
Double tap screen to go into reset
Select “Reset all setting” and continue to follow the instruction
(When you reset, all of your data and music WILL NOT erase. So don’t worry about that)
    Hope this helps.
