How do i edit voiceover in imovie

I am attempting to edit some voiceover audio that I have for a project that I'm working on.  I need to edit because the voiceover is too long and i need several parts of the voiceover.  Is this something that I'll be able to do?

Hi Jeni,
I am not familiar with Windows Movie Maker, so I lack any frame of reference (no pun inteneded) to judge what you may be doing wrong. Both iMovie and Premiere Elements (PE) are designed so that the normal work flow is trim the clip the way you want, then put the clip in the timeline of your movie. In either you can work other ways, but the layout and tools in these programs are pretty much geared for that type of workflow. I use both by the way, although I am fairly new to Adobe Premiere Elements 10 and have not used iMovie all that much. In PE for example, you can double click the clip you want to use and that opens the clip viewer. You slide the pointers at the beginning and end of the clip viewer time line to set what are called "in and out points" and drag the clip into your time line or onto the scene line depending on which PE editing mode you are using. When you eventually export the movie using the Share panel, the program exports the entire timeline, which should be the series of trimmed clips, unless you check the box to tell it to only export the marked part of the timeline (I forget the title on the check box and don't have the program running in front of me). But in either case, each clip in your movie or portion of a movie should be trimmed according to the in and out points you previously set.
iMovie works on a similar concept, except you drag your mouse pointer over a clip in an event to adjust the yellow rectangle to mark the part of the clip you want to use, then drag that clip into you project. In either program there are ways of trimming and cropping clips in the timeline/sceneline/project and automatically adjusting the rest to compensate, but in any case, I'm not sure why you would be losing the edits.

  • How do I edit clips in iMovie (or Premiere Elements 10)?

I am new to Mac. Used to have no problem at all editing and converting movies on my PC. Have both iMovie and Adobe Premiere Elements 10 on my new Mac. Even as a borderline PC geek, I can't seem to figure how to clip and edit and merge videos on my Mac. Guessing I will have questions about saving to a new DVD as well when I get that far. Trying to condense dozens of DVDs with old family home movies down to a single DVD by selecting 'best of clips.' Grateful for any assistance.

  • How can I edit titles in iMovie on slideshows?

    Hi support community!
I'm in the process of creating a slideshow with subliminal affirmations for myself. I watched a video on how to do this but the video editor was for a PC. Windows Movie Player. How can I using iMovie add titles and change the length of time, position and transparency of the titles(affirmations)??
    Thanks!
    Brian Forrest

Would have been useful to know what Mac you have, with what versions of OS X and iMovie.
There are many ways to produce slide shows using iPhoto (see this:  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2423 ), iMovie or iDVD and some limit the number of photos you can use (iDVD has a 99 chapter (slide) limitation).
If what you want is what I want, namely to be able to use high resolution photos (even 300 dpi tiff files), to pan and zoom individual photos, use a variety of transitions, to add and edit music or commentary, place text exactly where you want it, and to end up with a DVD that looks good on both your Mac and a TV - in other words end up with and end result that does not look like an old fashioned slide show from a projector - you may be interested in how I do it. You don't have to do it my way, but the following may be food for thought!
Firstly you need proper software to assemble the photos, decide on the duration of each, the transitions you want to use, and how to pan and zoom individual photos where required, and add proper titles. For this I use Photo to Movie. You can read about what it can do on their website:
    http://www.lqgraphics.com/software/phototomovie.php
(Other users here use the alternative FotoMagico:  http://www.boinx.com/fotomagico/homevspro/ which you may prefer - I have no experience with it.)
Neither of these are freeware, but are worth the investment if you are going to do a lot of slide shows. Read about them in detail, then decide which one you feel is best suited to your needs.
Once you have timed and arranged and manipulated the photos to your liking in Photo to Movie, it exports the file to iMovie  as a DV stream. You can add music in Photo to Movie, but I prefer doing this in iMovie where it is easier to edit. You can now further edit the slide show in iMovie just as you would a movie, including adding other video clips, then send it to iDVD 7, or Toast,  for burning.
You will be pleasantly surprised at how professional the results can be!
To simply create a slide show in iDVD 7 onwards from images in iPhoto or stored in other places on your hard disk or a connected server, look here:

  • How can I edit a mp3 file and drop it in an iMovie project?

I wish to edit an mp3 music file so that I can drop a piece of it into an iMovie project. iMovie's audio tools are very rudimentary---one can reposition a music file, shorten it, etc but cannot pick a piece of it to complement a movie segment.
So I dropped the mp3 file into GarageBand. I deleted the first section of the song, then selected the 16 second piece I wanted to include in my iMovie, using the copy command. Then I pasted the piece into a new GarageBand project screen. The piece wouldn't play, and when I selected "export" the piece neatly went to where I wanted it, but again with no sound.
So simply: how do I edit an mp3 file (cutting a piece of it) and then save it so I can apply it to an iMovie? Help!

it should have played, but you can do it easier by exporting just the section you want:

You will need an external drive that is formatted as MAC OS EXTENDED (journaled).
Move the Project, Events, and any photos and music to the external drive by following the instructions in this post.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4141
Be sure to use CONSOLIDATE MEDIA to get the photos and music. Then plug this drive into your computer and you will be able to edit.

  • How can you edit a previously burned DVD from an older iMovie app?

I converted VHS home movies to DVD years ago on the origonal iMovie app.  How can I edit those DVD's now?  Do I need a third party app to convert the DVD files for use in the new iMovie?

Yes, you need to 'reverse engineer' the highly compressed mpeg2 format of the DVDs.
You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • How to reactivate editing tools iMovie 09 8.0.6.(821)

Final stages of edition of 20 minutes and all editing tools, including advanced, ceased operation.
    Got the "QUIT UNEXPECTEDLY" notice.
    Tried restarting
Tried shut down and rebooting to no avail.
Everything on the project panel is frozen.
Cursor works and shows a photo cutaway insert that can't be seen as a thumbnail.
All photos inserted at 0.5 when the events setting is 4.0. I could not extend photos from 0.5 so used video as a platform for expanding them, which required frequent use of the slider at the bottom of the project panel. Most photos in png format and inserted from folders
    48.5 gb available.
Event library for edition is 1.56.00 and held in External HD, so I don't think its a space problem.
We had a 6.7. quake yesterday in Mexico City but everything worked okay after that.
It seems to be an expanding problem as the Preferences shows a blank frame when opening.
For my son's birthday in Australia, and there's just the final polishing to complete it.
I have just paused to recheck the system by moving the cursor over both the events and project frames.A little more responsive than when I started this essay of dismay and frustration....and then the QUIT UNEXPECTEDLY notice.
I send my second report to Apple.
I hope for some help from the community.
    Thanks for your attention.

How to trash iMovie pref. file? Went to Preferences pressed delete with no result. (It's display screen is still blank) Is the idea here to find out if the problem is with the iMovie system or with the data for edition?
    • Delete iMovie pref. file
    iMovie pref. file resides.
Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD) / Users / "Your account" / Library / Preferences (User-Library)
    - NOT THE LIBRARY on first window when opening Start-Up hard disk. This is the Root-Library.
and the file is named. (one or more of these)
    com.apple.iMovie.plist
    com.apple.iMovie3.plist
    com.apple.iMovie7.plist
    com.apple.iMovie8.plist
    com.apple.iMovie9.plist
    and find this too
    com.apple.iApps.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this/these file/s out on to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
If You run Mac OS X.7 or more - then the Library in the User-account folder is invisibly and need to be set to be viewable. IT IS NOT in the Library on Root level (when opening MacintoshHD - first window = root level)
( This can be done by: Open Terminal, then enter: chflags nohidden ~/Library (EXACTLY THIS - notice the Space sign)
Then press return, then restart, and it will always be visible until the next major update, when you do the same thing again. A bit of brain surgery so take care or find someone that are familiar to this to keep in hand.)
Not using iPhoto when problem I described occurred. Transferring photos from files.
Has nothing to do if it is in use or not. When iMovie starts IT USES the iPhoto Library - and if this is corrupted then iMovie get's problem.
    3 ext HD in operation:
    1. E315SU31 by AZio superspeed usb 3.0 - Format: MacOS Extended (journaled). Sharing permissions Read Write. This one holds the Event Library for the edition and copy of the Project and Photo file.Cap. 232.57 Available. 12.78
    Low but OK
    2. Iomega i usb - Format: Windows NT Filesystem. This one holds copy of Project Sharing permissions Read Write
Will be a very risky Storage with high risk of Project break down - Can be hard to impossibly to repair. Not recommended at all !
    3. My Book - Format: MS-DOS (FAT 32) Holds copy of Photo file. Sharing perm. R&W.
OK for all but NOT FOR any Video at all
I have my wife's Mac (same model) and could transfer data to it and complete current and urgent project...or might I be transporting the problem?
    Should work if You do
    • Use an external hard disk that is Mac OS Extended formatted - NOTHING ELSE
    • DO NOT MOVE any folder named
    iMovie Projects - or -
    iMovie Events
on DeskTop/Finder - as iMovie will get lost and can not reconnect in a secure way
    BUT
Connect external HD and in iMovie Application - move in resp. window from one hard disk to the other. If done so it will be safe.

  • How can I edit an iMovie project created on one machine on a different one?

I created an iMovie on one MacBook, and want a colleague to edit it.
I created a dropbox folder, moved all the files there; i can see them on the other Mac, but the project doesn't show up in the project window in iMovie on the other Mac and I can't open it there by browsing to it in Finder...
    Can anyone help?

I think you can transfer an iMovie for iOS project from the iPad and edit it on iMovie on the Mac. This works fine.
However, you cannot start a movie on iMovie for the Mac and transfer it to iMovie for the iPad.
    Think of it this way.
Say that iMovie for the Mac has 1000 features*, and iMovie for the iPad has 400 features*. These 400 features map one to one to an equivalent iMovie for Mac feature. Because there is a good mapping, you can transfer and edit.
But if you go the other way, iMovie for Mac has 600 features for which there is no corresponding feature in iMovie for iPad or iPhone. So there is no way to edit an iMovie for Mac project on the iPad.
    * I made these numbers up for illustration purposes.

Thanks for that info! Even in my time answering questions on iMovie Discussion Group, I never had a good understanding of when and how Optimize Movie came into play. I always would import as Optimized and Large Size and figured that was good enough. But knowing you got much, much more flexibility doing it the way you describe gives me a much better understanding of the different routes you can take into the Event Library.

  • How do i edit a video on my iphone 6

I have to submit a music video to a competition and I can't figure out how to edit it to make it shorter.  Help?  THANKS!

    Hello Trace61,
Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you need to use your iPhone 6 to trim a video.
You can do this from the Photos app by using the instructions found on this page:
Edit photos and trim videos - iPhone
If you want to use iMovie on iOS, start with the tips found here to import and trim the clips before you edit them together:

  • How do you edit the audio files in the slideshow  of my idvd project?

I have created a project in idvd and I dragged and dropped in the music files from the audio tab that I wanted - I selected multiple songs (2) and I hear them play just fine. The problem is that I want one song to play for a certain section of the photos and then I want the other song to start at a particular point. Why am I not able to edit the music in the slideshow and how can I do that?

iMovie is a good way to do this if your project is film based. If your using photos (slideshow) in iDVD, I would be inclinded to use GarageBand to edit the audio portion of your project (It may be just me, but whenever I've attempted to create a slideshow in iMovie, the photos look "grainy" to me, not as clear).
If you know the time of when you want your songs to change, you can adjust the length (time) of each song in GarageBand as well as fade in/fade out transition of the two or more songs. After saving, you then can access the saved audio mix via the audio tab in iDVD. (I'm making an assumption that one might be familiar enough with GarageBand to do this

  • Import Edited Video Into iMovie 8.0.5

I have an edited movie that I created on a previous version of iMovie. I saved the movie to mini DV tape. I want to import the movie in its edited version to iMovie 8.0.5. When I import it, it puts the clips out of order, esp transitions and titles. It seems that there must be some timecode in the DV somewhere that iMovie 8.0.5 is using to reorder the fully edited video. The question is then: How do you import a fully edited movie into iMovie without it reordering it into clips. If there is no option to import the clip, then I will have to re-edit the entire movie -- a true waste of time. Please help. Robert.

Hello, Robert, and Welcome to the Discussions,
iMovie 9 (v 8.x) cannot import an earlier version of iMovie and keep its edits. You will get the clips, edited clips, photos, but no effects or titles, and all the transitions will be converted to cross-dissolves.
If you still have the previous iMovie version used to create that movie, you can export it as Quick Time Full Quality and import that QT movie into iMovie 09.
