How do I eliminate an extra user account i never wanted to create?

I recently reformatted and reinstalled and re-set up my whole system, and even though I thought i was beng careful to set up as lean a system as possible, I somehow ended up with an extra, unidentified user account at my login screen. I normally log in automatically at startup, but whenever I need to logout and log back in, there's this annoying extra user log in, that, up until this time, I've never had to deal with, as I'm the only one using my computer. I can't get rid of the blasted thing no matter what I've tried, and there seems to be no documentation covering this mystery, either. Anybody else run into this problem before, and how did you give this extra user account the boot?

Those 2 folders are normal, and Aliases.

While using Migration Assistant I inadvertently created a secondary "user account." My files are split between users. Any easy way to eliminate the secondary "user" without losing files?

There is no "merge" command command for accounts; you can copy or move the files from the second accounts home-folder to a subfolder in your home folder.
You need to make yourself the owner of this second home folder.
And you need to be in an account that has Administrator Privileges for this.
Open the Users-Folder in the Finder.
Select the Home Folder to be moved.
Select Get Info (File->Get Info or ⌘-I)
In the Info window click the lock in the bottom right hand corner.
Enter your password to open the lock.
Click the "+" sign at the bottom left of the window.
Select yourself in the popup
In the gear pulldown select "make (me) owner"
Click on the privileges next to your name, select read & write
Select "Apply to enclosed items"
Now you should be able to move or copy all items to the corresponding folders in your Home folder.
If you are comfortable with the Terminal, you could change the ownership with the "chown" command instead of using "Get Info".

That's the classic behaviour after using Migration Assistant and that's normal.

I have a macbook pro 13" 2008 with 8 gb of ram that has been showing stuttering in hd video lately (or maybe when i upgraded to lion). I created another user and it doesn't seem to suffer any stuttering. Perhaps it doesn't have weird things running the background like the 655mb kernal task I see in activity monitor. My question is, how do I make my old user account perform like the new one? I've tried to turn off things running the background, but it doesn't seem to do anything. Thanks!

Thanks. I will try going through TM. Since my Simpletech is on the way out, I'll be plugging in a new external hard drive (other than the back-up drive) and trying to restore the library to the new drive. Any advice or warning if this is NOT the right thing to do?
Meanwhile, that is a great tip to do an alternate back-up using a different means. It's been tough to figure out how to "preserve access" to digital images and files for posterity, knowing the hardware will always fail/obsolesce sooner or later, and that "clouds" are only as good as their consistent and reliable accessibility. Upping the odds with redundancy will help dull the edge of my "access anxiety", though logically, it can never relieve it. Will look into
Carbon Copy Cloner.

To completely remove the files, from the desktop click Go>Go to Folder and type
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.ImageKit.RecentPictureService/Data/Library/Images /Recent Pictures/
Then move the files you don't want to trash.
Make sure to empty trash and restart before viewing your recents again, or they will reappear.

You must first log out of the account you wish to remove. From the other account open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock icon and enter your admin password as requested. Select the account you wish to delete from list then click on the Delete [-] button. Select the last option to completely remove. Do not select Secure Erase sub-option.

You cannot. You have to make your own download by signing into the App Store using your Apple ID then downloading the file.
If you just want to install it on your computer, then copy the file to a flash drive and transfer it to your computer.

When you have set up migration assistant on your pc, it gives you options on what you want to migrate. Chose one account and migrate it, then choose the other account, and do the same. Two accounts will automatically be set up on the Mac.

Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
Report any errors it found for Disk Repair, don't need the ones for Permissions Repair.
Try it again & see if anything changed, but have Activity Monitor open & Show All Processes & sorted on CPU%, also have Console open if we can... maybe not when switching, but we'll see.

Deleting the account on your phone only removes if from your phone. The account and it's data remain intact and doing so will not effect your daughter's phone.
To do this, first go to Settings>iCloud on your phone and turn any synced data (contacts, calendars, etc.) to Off, and when prompted, choose to keep the data on the phone. When finished, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account. Then set up a new iCloud account with a different Apple ID and turn any data you want to sync with iCloud (contact, calendars, etc.) back to On. This will upload your data to your new iCloud account.

Is someone else using the PC and iTunes?
Create another user for the PC with your name, and try syncing that way.
This way it wont conflic with the other user.
