How do I eliminate background noise from a recording?

I loaded an audiotape from a cassette to my MacBook. There is too much background noise and I don't know how to get rid of it. Is it possible? Thanks, Miriam

One option is to use the (free) Audacity. Just load the mp3 or aiff and follow the instructions to construct a noise profile and then get rid of the background noise. Once that is done, one can reimport the file into iMovie, if you choose.
Export the file from iMovie 09 as mp3 or aiff file. Import into Audacity. Get rid of the noise. Export from Audacity as a mp3 or aiff file, and use that as you like.
To find out how to use Audacity, I recommend checking out the fine tutorials on YouTube.

  • Removing background "noise" from an interview recording

    Hello!
I was wondering if it was possible on Soundtrack Pro to remove continuous background "noise" from a recorded interview? An example would be someone clicking a pen or a tapping his foot during the duration of the interview. Any advice would be extremely helpful.
    Thanks so much!
    Ted

It can, but what you are describing are not continuous, but points of sound. Continuous refers more to hums and vibrations, things like air conditioner noise or the sound of traffic. That said you can still give it a try. You can also try running the click and pop filter and see what you get.
Regarding these point sources I have better luck removing them with Adobe's Soundbooth. Their cascading frequency display allows you to draw irregular shapes around sounds like these and then extract them without disturbing the other sounds around them.
Take a look at the manual.
    Good luck

  • Can Logic plug ins remove background noise from interview?

Can Logic plug ins remove background noise from interview?
A friend with an important interview recorded in noisy conditions has asked me to help remove background noise - never done this technically.
Is there a Logic or third party plug in that would could remove background noise from a spoken word interview? Have tried EQ which improves the sound slightly but not a solution.
Anyone with specialised knowledge of this sound editing operation?
    cheers

There are several 3rd party denoisers, they mostly work by first 'learning' the noise footprint of the audio, for which it is best to record a few seconds of silence (with an open mic).
These will all do a decent to excellent (it all depends on the source material) job:

    http://www.kvraudio.com/get/2104.html
    http://www.kvraudio.com/get/2791.html
    http://www.kvraudio.com/get/1182.html
    http://www.kvraudio.com/get/1029.html
    Addit:
Is it that background noise (traffic, talking etc) drowns out the words? Then you'd probably have more luck with (radical) eq-ing and/or notch filtering to find the most dominant frequency range of the speaker in relation to the background noise.
As an interviewer myself I will point out that even with a small disctaphone you need to have some awareness of how the microphone picks up things. As soon as you nead to lean towards whoever you're talking to, just to make sure you're audible, the dictaphone on the table is probably recording mainly ambient noise, the interview being part of that. This is especially a problem when interviewing in a busy public space.

  • How do I eliminate shaky text from scrolling credits?

I have added scrolling credits to a video and the scroll is not smooth.  There is no stabilization or shutter roll mechanism to use with built-in, FCPX text and titles.  So, how do I eliminate the shake from scrolling credits?

Ya you got it rightly I read a guide here http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/basic_audio_filtertutoria.html
so I am aware of basic things at least.Like you gave an example of Main Parameter in your previous reply similarly I feel if some where I can get these parameters in Filter what do they do that may help.

  • How to eliminate the noise from the stepper motor

I’m using stepper motors to move a traverse on which a hot-wire anemometer probe is mounted. When the stepper motors are turned on, they induce noise on the analog signal of the hotwire anemometer, or of any other transducer, at multiples of 120Hz.
The stepper drives are P41 Series made by American Precision Inc. The P41 Series contains a power supply, a motor drive and a logic controller. The logic controller inputs are optically isolated and utilize the 5 VDC supplied internally by the drive.
An NI 6251 or NI 6024E DAQ card is used with LabVIEW to send digital output signal to the logic controller in order to step the motors.
The AI input channels of either NI 6251 or NI 6024E DAQ cards and LabVIEW are used to acquire the signal of the hot-wire anemometer. Different DAQ cards are used for the data acquisition and the stepper motor control and the noise is transferred through the laptop to the data acquisition card (analog signal).
All cables are shielded and the noise was confirmed to be conductive and not radiative.
There was no difference when measuring the analog signal with Differential or RSE.
As a test, the leads from to the drive’s logic controller were connected to the AI input channels in order to check the magnitude and frequency of the noise flowing to the DAQ card and were found to be 5 V peak-to-peak at 60 Hz.
Please let me know if you have an idea on how to eliminate this noise.

It sounds like you have a ground loop issue.  If possible, try totally isolating the stepper controller from the data acquistion AI more than you already have.  This could include any of the following:
Ensure the optoisolation on the control lines fully separates the power and ground of the digital output and stepper input.
Use different grounds for the stepper power supply and the DAQ power supply/computer.  Isolation transformers can help here.
Use lower inductance lines for the stepper controller.  This will reduce the movement of the ground.
I suspect you have probably been over the above, so you are left with filtering the noise out of the signal.  Since it has high harmonic content, a simple low-pass is unlikely to work well.  Your best bet is probably to characterize it and use some sort of Fourier filtering.  If the relative sizes of the harmonics are always the same, you can take the Fourier transform, find the height of the fundamental, use this to calculate the sizes of the harmonics, delete them from the Fourier transform, and do an inverse Fourier transform to recover your signal.  Alternately, you can use a series of narrowband filters to remove the noise, although this will also remove any signal at the same frequencies.  It is better if you can improve your circuitry to remove the noise.
Good luck.  Let us know if we can help you more.

  • Reduce or eliminate background noise

I have seen this issue touched upon in other forums, but really need a straightforward answer to this question as we are working on a project for a school teacher that is retiring, and want to give her a good memory to take with her. Unfortunately, when the person taking the video was doing it, they did it near screaming children. So we have interviews with students that we can barely hear due to the background noise. (We are on a tight deadline so a second take is not an option).
The question is: step-by-step using iMovie HD 06, can we reduce the background noise so that we can eliminate or reduce the screaming children in the background, and keep the sound of the child that is speaking?
If this can be accomplished by the equalizer, again please provide pretty specific instructions, as I can be dense at time.
I can raise the volume on the soundtrack, but that seems to make both the child's voice louder and the background noise louder.
Please! Any help would be immensely appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi
    As Karsten writes.
There are no magic audio program that can differ sound You want from sound You don't.
As I learned from TV-broadcasting. Most TV-programs are dubbed. Original audio
    out and playback audio added.
Yes all text has to be lip-sync-read one more time. Tedious but this is how
some in Street talks are done. (You don't hear a car although You see them)
BUT: With expert microphone tech. Special mic which has to be mouth close placed and
a very narrow uptake much can be done - but most often by Pro-people.

  • How do I remove background images from a PDF?  Using Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Standard.

I have a file I need to print off, but the document is 100 pages lond and each page as a very obnoxious background image that makes it difficult to read the content, and I really don't want to waste the ink.
I have tried a few things with no luck:
-Tried replacing document background color in the 'Accessibility' tab in preferences.
-Tried unchecking the 'Display large images' field in the 'Page Display' tab in preference - this leaves a dark gray background that I can't get rid of, which is almost as bad as the original image.
-Tried several combinations under the 'Color Management' tab in preference to lessen the gray background achieved from the previous step.  I can only brighten the shade slighty, but there is still a fair amount of gray background.
I just want a white background, or a clear background, and I have not seen any article or help topic on how to accomplish this.  Please help!
    Mike

You might want to see if you can select the background with the object touchup tool. If so, can you then just delete the selected object. May take a while to go through the document, but if it solves the problem you are ahead. You may be able to select it with JavaScript and repeat the process. My point of using the object touchup tool is that it may not be a background set by Acrobat, but something that is simply labeled as an image from the Acrobat viewpoint.

You shouldn't have to.  Time Machine will delete them automatically when it needs room for new ones.  If you're running Leopard, though, and have the Warn when old backups are deleted box checked in Time Machine Preferences > Options, it won't.  Just remove the check and run a backup.
If you have other data on the TC's internal HD, that's going to cause trouble sooner or later.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for some possible workarounds.
If you still want to delete individual backups, or all backups of selected items, do not use the Finder.  See #12 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions, and note the pink box there.

  • How do I eliminate random squares from pdf output?

When I create a PDF from FrameMaker 8, random squares appear in the output.  How can I eliminate these squares?  And is the issue with the Distiller, Distiller settings, or with FrameMaker or what?  The squares do not replace characters, but are overtop of them.
    Thank you,
    Erin

    Arnis,
The squares are only appearing on the copyright page.  I don’t know why this would be.   It only has text.  And the fonts used on that page are also used in the rest of the book.  Here is an example of the squares I am seeing.  Are you able to see this?
The rest of the document has step by step instructions, some pictures and tables, paragraphs....I don't know the original source of the content in the files.  It could have started in Word.   There are some coding examples in the text (Monotype), but that font is not used in the file that has the issues.  I guess the copyright page that has the issues could have been copied from another document at some point.  Would I need to do anything to that content to make it acceptable?
    Thank you,
    Erin

  • How to remove noise from a recorded audio file.

I'm a relatively new user. I recorded certain audio files which are noisy(humm or hiss). Can anyone suggest ways to remove noise from that clip? I tried Denoiser but it added further noise artifacts which were unpleasant to hear Need help. And pls dont ask me to rerecord it in a noise free environment!

If you have some cash you go after 'Sonnox Restoreor' or 'iZotope RX'. Otherwise this might be of some help:
