I'm finding duplicate groups and contacts on my iPad. I am not finding the same problem with either my iMac or iPhone 5.

Precisely what adami said. Hook up your ipad to your computer. Under 'info' choose to sync contacts. That will put them on your computer. Then plug in your Touch and choose the same, to sync contacts with the computer, and they'll transfer.
Alternatively you can go into each contact and choose to 'share' it and mail it to an account that you can access on your Touch, then open it and save it. Upside, no computer needed, downside, it's a bit tedious.
Theoretically you can also use iCloud, however the cloud ate my contacts so I'm not syncing via the cloud for that anymore. Your experience might be different, but I personally would avoid the cloud unless you've got them all backed up somewhere in case the cloud eats yours too.

The method provided in the link in the previous posts explains how to delete contacts from your Contacts app. But the contact may still appear in the recently used list that you see when starting to type an address in somewhere.
To delete contacts from appearing in the recently used group, start typing a name in an app like Mail. When the unwanted contact appears check to see if there is a small i in a circle at the right end of the contact. Tapping that should bring up an option to delete from Recents.
If there is no small i you'll have to have patience. Unused items are eventually deleted from the Recents list on their own.
