How do I enable WEP security

. .  on my peer-to-peer network between Windows 7 netbook and Officejet 6500A?
I don't have a wireless router and I don't want to use a usb port to connect to the printer, so I decided to use the peer to peer method of connecting.  Understanding that it is not very secure, but I disconnect as soon as I finish sending the print job.

Oh, sorry.  You are trying to access the printer's Embedded Web Server.  That is where you can establish the WEP security for the ad-hoc network.  You do this by typing the IP address into a browser's address bar as you would if you wanted to go directly to a website.
If it does not find your printer, perhaps you have a firewall blocking communication.  If your antivirus software has a firewall, disable it to see if that is the problem.

  • How to re-set up WEP security on a WRT100

I'm visiting at my aunt's house and her Linksys was not working properly, so I reset it to factory default, and it's working now, except now I cannot seem to find the how-to page on how to set up the WEP security again (or another security variation...whatever is appropriate now for a home-based router). Can someone sent me the url for instructions on how to do this? And is it crazy to try doing this without an ethernet cable connecting the laptop to her router? Thanks!

For you to be able to set up the security, it is imperative that you connect a cable from a computer to the router. But this is just temporary unless you are finished changing all the settings. You can do it wirelessly, but you will have to re-login again and again to the set up page because you will be disconnected every time you change a setting. Please refer to the link below:

  • How do I enable "Audit user account logons" using PowerShell, to improve security?

With successful hacking attacks more often employing valid Active Directory user credentials, it is quite helpful when administrators can
easily poll user logon events. Rather than query
every domain computer for its logon events, one can alter the Default Domain Controller Policy GPO to enable "Audit user account logons" (Success and Failure) then merely poll
only the domain controller -- quite efficient. PowerShell helpfully has its Group Policy Module, including the following two cmdlets.
    1) Get-GPO "Default Domain Controllers Policy" will retrieve the top-level GPO object, but how do I enable that specific setting?
    2) Set-GPRegistryValue might be the right tool, but I cannot find any documentation on the values I need to supply to its parameters (-Name -Key -ValueName -Type -Value) to enable "Audit user account logons" -- both Successes and Failures.
One can manually modify this setting using the Group Policy Management console GUI on the domain controller, but I am trying to upgrade my professional work habits to use stored scripts, rather than unrecorded point & clicks, so that my actions are repeatable
    and documented.
Any pointers to documentation or an example would be welcome. I originally posted this question in the TechNet PowerShell Forum this afternoon, but someone recommended I copy it to the TechNet Group Policy Forum.

Before going further, although you have expressed that you don't want to use GPMC GUI to configure the audit setting, in fact, it's an easy and comparatively handy method to set the setting. Besides, based on the description, you
want to use PowerShell to do this. However, as far as I know, PowerShell can configure registry-based policy settings and Group Policy Preferences Registry settings, but audit policy security settings are not registry keys.
Nonetheless, if we really don't want to use GPMC console to do this, we can use Auditpol.exe to set the audit setting.

  • How do I locate my wep security key?

where and how do i locate my wep security key

The security key / passcode is set on your router. If you have an Apple Airport router (Extreme or Express), you would use the Airport Utility on your Mac (in Applications/Utilities) to configure it. If you have a router that was supplied by your ISP, the WEP key is often written on the bottom (and you can always ask your ISP). If you purchased a different router, you would have set up a passcode. You usually administer non-Apple routers by browsing to its private IP address, eg http://192.168.1.1 (or whatever your equivalent is; you can usually figure it out from your Mac's Network panel of System Preferences).

  • How to re-enable secure boot ?

    Hi All,
On my X1 Carbon, I had to move from Win 8.1 pro to 8.1 Ent. I did a fresh install from scratch to only install what I need.
During my setup, I had to disable Secure boot, to boot on a USB Key, install 8.1 Enterprise. Now that everything is working, I would like to re-enable the secure boot option.
If I don't it directly in the BIOS, the laptop doesn't book any more.
ANy idea how to do it ? Do I have to import key from my 8.1 Ent to the Bios or something like this ?
    Thank you
    Christopher
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

If you want to install Windows 8.1 in UEFI mode, and thus be able to Secure Boot it, you must set your machine to Secure Boot off, while installing, and in the Startup section of the BIOS, set UEFI/Legacy Boot to UEFI only.
NB, for a USB device to be able to install a UEFI version, it must be formatted to Fat32. I have no clue why this is required, but it is. I have installed Vista / 7 / 8 in EFI/UEFI mode from a basic Fat32 drive for many years if required.
I have seen this go wrong on a couple of machines, mainly because the HD is initialized as a MBR drive, and the generic MS Windows 8.1 ISO will not give you an option to initialize it as a GPT or a MBR drive, which the Recovery Media from Lenovo for Windows 8 actually does.
You can then either use a Windows bootable media to enter Repair/Recovery mode, and formatting your HD through the DISKPART utility or what is simpler, boot up a liveCD image of gParted and clear your drive completely by initializing the drive as GPT, exit the utility and then installing Windows 8.1, which will, due to the UEFI only selection in the Startup procedure, boot up your Windows 8.1 installation in UEFI mode and once finished, you will be able to turn Secure Boot back on.
    Hope this helps!
    Cheers!

  • How-To: Correctly entering WEP passcodes so Wi-Fi works

After speaking with specialist and getting password protected Wi-Fi to work:
    1. Since my 10 digit WEP code only has numbers 0-9 and letters A-F, the iPhone sees it as a HEX code, not a standard WEP code. Thus, when entering it in the iPhone, you must go to the ASCII/HEX option, and put the $ symbol in, which tells it that your WEP key is really a HEX key.
You can access the HEX input option under seurity.
So, when joining networks in the future that are locked, 10 digit, and only numerals 0-9 and letter a-f, you can choose HEX and add the $ sign. (Some people report this working without adding the $ sign).
    2. If you appear to be connected with a signal after entering your passcode, but still cannot access the internet, you go back to Wi-Fi options and tell the iPhone to "Forget this Network". Then you re-access it and start the input over.
    3. Longer passwords or passwords with strange characters should be tried under both WEP and ASCII/HEX. Again, before each try, choose "Forget this Network" and start over.
    4. A good test to make sure that your iPhone really does work on your home internet is to go into your router and turn your passcode off. Then, on the iPhone, choose "Forget this Network", and start over. iPhone will fly and you'll see it work (unless your phone is defective - and this is not likely.) If you don't know how to do this, (turn off router password) call your service provider. They will walk you through it, and it is really easy to do (maybe 4 steps... you just need the providers name and password and you access the option on menu... very simple. It is also simple to turn it back on when done with your test).
    5. Once you know your iPhone works, you can play around with the different passcode options if you want to keep the network password protected. Again, remember the "Forget this Network" option between each try. Otherwise, you will appear connected with signal strength but really won't be able to access the internet.
    Notes:
    A. A Fios network specialist told me that the more encryption you have, the longer the internet takes - on everything: computers, devices, etc. 8 or 13 digits are ideal, and more than enough protection. And your internet will be faster.
    B. All this password confusion should be standardized, but different providers choose different formats, hence the confusion. Although iPhone is very capable and is advanced technology, they could only support so many formats, hence our need to do some "tweaking" for unconventional formats. Eventually these providers should standardize in the future. (Same problems can exist for people connecting Wii's and PS3's wirelessly to protected home networks. Standardization would fix this).
    C. Although my iPhone is working quickly and effortlessly now on my home Wi-Fi network, it did go a little faster when the WEP was turned off on the router (and so did my laptop), so I guess the network guy was right.
    D. You don't need to "Restore Your iPhone" in iTunes to get this all to work. Although some people have mentioned that a "soft reset" of iPhone has helped. To do this, hold down the button on the top of iPhone while you hold down the "Home" button.
    E. If your iPhone works in open networks, or at home with your passcode off in the router, then your iPhone works fine on Wi-Fi. If the above solution does not work for you at home with WEP security turned on in your router, then the problem is an encryption one. Your options are to keep your home network passcode off, or to call your service provider and try different types of passcode encryption until you find the right one.
    F. If you bought your own router and are not leasing it from your network provider, you can visit their website and try updating the firmware on your router or seeing what other options are available for passcode encryption and try those.
    G. If you have MAC Authorization or Identification enabled in your router settings, you will need to manually enter your iPhone's MAC address into your router settings. This address can be found on the iPhone's "About" Menu option, under "Settings". This type of layer of security is really unneccessary and pain. Most people do not have it enabled, but if you do, entering the iPhone's MAC address enable you to get on. (But I suggest you turn this off if it is on.)
**If this post helped you, please respond or add a star if helpful so others can find it and use it.
Using the iPhone on Wi-Fi really is a pleasure!!! Enjoy your iPhones!!

Just a word to the wise. Turning off password protection in your router leaves your network wide open to whomever is close enough to see your network. Unfortunately, a walkthrough is not as easy as it sounds. Every routers interface is different, and without talking to you while you have it open and having some idea what the interface looks like, it would be difficult to say the least. However if you know where you turned it off, then you know where to turn it on. Look for some of the options you have seen here and you will hopefully be able to figure it out. 64bit WEP with no encription, with a passcode that is either ascii or Hex is problably the easiest to set up. It is not the most secure, but will keep most folks out. However a relatively determined hacker will still be able to get in. Each requires that you select a key of a specific length, that is what makes it 64bit. 128bit makes it more secure because the key has to be twice as long.
Once you get your router set up with a password(key), you have to get it entered in your iphone. If you were all ready connected to your network, you will not be anymore, but the iphone will not really tell you that clearly. Now for the steps:
    1. Go into Settings - Wi-Fi and touch the blue arrow next to your network.
    2. The touch Forget this Network at the top of the screen. It will ask for a
    confirmation.
    3. Touch the back button which puts you back on the Wi-Fi Networks
    window.
    4. Cycle the Wi-Fi off and then back on. It will do a new search for networks.
    Yours should show up again.
    5. This time when you touch on it it should ask you to Enter Password. Touch
the WEP Password entry on the Security line.
    6. This will bring up a new window where you should see 'WEP hex or ASCII'.
Make sure that is checked, touch it if it is not.
    7. Then touch the back button and enter your password(key) you put in your
router. If you set it to hex in your router, you may have to try the $ thing
mentioned before, but I would try it without first.
    8. The password window will disappear. The lock should disappear from your
network for a few moments and then reappear. Once it does, click on the
next to it again. Check to see if you have valid information in the first 4
    lines.
    A couple of notes:
You will get valid information if your router is set up for DHCP, which most are, but if yours is not, you will have to change the tab to BootP or Static and set those up with valid information. However since without a password(key) you did not have a problem, DHCP is probably running.
Second, note I said valid information in the first 4 entries. If you see an ip address starting with 169.254, that is not a valid address. At this point go back to step 2 and try again, perhaps with the $. However since you cannot see the letters/numbers you entered in the password, it could just be a typo on your part, so maybe try it again both with and without the $.
Hopefully this will get you going. Good luck. Was that fourth grade or second grade level, these days you never know. I guess it would have been second year college or later in my day. ; )

  • WEP security disallows wireless PC connection

    Hi, all.
I need help on setting my pc to securely connect to my AEBS.
I've seen a lot of threads regarding troubles of the PC wirelessly connecting to the AEBS. After hours of researching and getting tips here, I've got two PCs connected only when I don't put a network password on the AEBS connection.
But when I turn on passwords at the base station the pcs cannot connect even if they see the network name and have the same passowrd.
    Any help is appreciated.

I posted this in another thread but I think it pertains to you as well. Please let me know if this works for you:
I have it working with both my Wii and Xbox 360 but I am still confused on how this works.
Here is what I did and I will explain why I am confused:
    1. The Airport setup that gets installed with the setup disk only allowed WPA encrypt. Both Xbox and Wii won't work with this.
    2. I disabled encrypt through the airport setup util.
    3. I then ran the airport setup assistant and enabled WEP 128 bit encrypt. using my 26 char. password.
    4. Setup both xbox 360 and wii and both work great.
Now to the confusing part. Today I installed the latest update to the airport extreme and when I ran the Airport utility it show I have no security and when I tried to run the airport setup assistant the icon has disappeared. I did a spotlight search and it found the AP setup assistant on my backup drive so this latest update must delete it. I then copied it back to my utilities folder and ran it and it shows I have WEP 128 encrypt. So do I actually have security on my APE? I have WEP 128 with the password on all 3 of my mac's, Wii, & Xbox so it is obviously taking it.
So basically this should help some people to get this to work but I need to figure out if I actually have security and why did the AP setup assistant work for this?
    Any thoughts?

  • Enabling Wireless Security?

    Hi;
I've just gotten myself a wireless router to use for my ibook G4. I've never used wireless so I'm not exactly sure how to configure it. However, I want to know whether it's possible to password the channel or something so that my entire campus isn't using my connection
    Any help?

Don't worry, you won't blow anything up, the worst you can do by tinkering with WPA security is to lock yourself out of your own wireless network. If you did that just reconnect with an ethernet cable and change the settings back to 'none'.
Are you sure your flatmates are picking up your network? On a recent trip to Brighton to visit a nephew, I immediately picked up 3 unsecured networks. If you have already enabled WEP it's unlikely that someone has already cracked it.
WPA is definitely the way to go though. I use a Belkin myself which is more Mac friendly I think. At least the set-up guide gave Mac options, lol. I'm not familiar with the D-Link, have a read through the wireless section of the 'Tiger' forum and see if you can pick up any clues there:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=755
You could always put a new post there too, after all the fact that you have an iBook is irrelevant, you're using Tiger!
You could also try here: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/dlink
    Good luck!

  • WRT320N with WEP security??

I just bought a WRT320N router and it works well on both bands with WPA 2 Personal. I know I should use this as it's prefered to WEP, but it also tried WEP security and it simple doesn't work...  If I generate a key, and put it in the client, it simple doesn't connect and says: "Unable to connect"...
Any idea what happens and how to get the exact error message. I looked in the (enabled) administration log on the router, but nothing appears concering this connection.
BTW: I am using the Intel PROSet/Wireless tool to manage my connections and have the wireless wifi link 4965agn as hardware.
    Cheers,
    Ed

    Hellu Donut,
    Thanks for the info.
Yep, I know I have to use key 1, but it simple won't work. I use it with my other legacy router at the moment so I don't think I am using it wrong. What I did: put in some phrase, press generate and copied the result key (and press saving settings).
But how can I find out why it says that it's "unable to connect".. ? When I switch back to WPA 2 Personal (through another client profile) it works fine, but not with WEP .... A bit frustrating....

  • How can I enable SuperFetch?

    Hi,
I downloaded Java from Java.com (free download) to be able to open a file I received as email attachment. After the download something happened to my laptop pc (Windows 7). I received pop up messages that said something like "Your computer got infected
you need to install Windows Defender 2015. And they started to pop up almost every second and also the screen view changed. It got upside down or windows messages moved and seemed to be multiplied, very unusual things kept going...
I stopped it and went online on my tablet pc and looked for what to do if my computer got infected with virus (because that's what I thought happened). From what I read online I made sure that all Microsoft windows experts were all recommending to start

that I needed live help from a Microsoft expert. I chatted online with some MS Support Desk techs and followed their instructions but it didn't help at all. When I click on the little flag icon with a red cross sign on it(the one that says Open Action Center)
it says 1 important message-Turn on Windows Security Center service(Important) I tried to turn it on (I don't know how many times!) but I get the message "The Windows Security Center can't be started"
I went to Troubleshooting and clicked on Check of Performance issues (under System and Security) it did checking and I got the message "Problems Found- SuperFetch is not running. Not Fixed.

  • My iPad 2 is disabled. I know the passcode and apple id. How do I enable it?

My iPad 2 16Gb has been disabled because the wrong passcode was entered too many times. Since purchasing the iPad I never purchased anything from the Apple Store and after a couple years my passcode got misplaced.
A friend of mine in the church where I attend tried to help me and went to iTunes, erased the iPad and downloaded the new software. When it was time to activate the iPad, it demanded my apple id and original passcode at the time of purchase.
I searched and found it in my wallet but the last three characters were uncertain. The salesman used an "up-arrow r" for "R" and counted it as two characters; so the passcode only had 7 characters instead of 8. I thought the up-arrow was a "p" and it could have been capital or common. Then the "r" might have been a "k" because the way I wrote it. After many combinations, I ran out of tries and the iPad was disabled. Eventually I realized it was a "R" but too late.
I visited the Apple Support in my country and they were unable to do anything about it even though I had the right apple id and passcode. The security questions were the problem.
The first security question was my birth date and I was getting that wrong. Why, I don't know. How could I get that wrong. Not even my wife's birth date works. I began to question whether the salesman went through any security questions with us at all.
How do I enable the iPad knowing my apple id and passcode at the time of purchase?

You're facing Find My iPhone Activation Lock, and you will not be able to use you're iPad without knowing the Apple ID and Password used to originally activate it. If you don't remember your password, try: https://iforgot.apple.com/password/verify/appleid
