How do i encode a HUGE movie to fit on a website?

I have a film shot by my client that is 58Mb (about 720px wide) , and I need to resize it and encode it so that it is downloadable in several formats (wmv, avi, mov) on the client's website. I will probably also have an embedded version, but that depends how the user testing goes.
What settings in QT 7.5 should I use to get good quality but as small as possible files? What is considered a user friendly size, under 5Mb?
If it helps, the movie is an interview, so speech can be 22KHz, and there is little or no fast action.

The movie is about 4:45 minutes long. I have 13 of them as well, all roughly the same length.
If that is 4 minutes and 45 seconds, it sounds like they are already the equivalent of an H.264/AAC iPod encode. While you can transcode them to any of the afore mentioned file formats using a combined video + audio data rate in the 1600-1700 Kbps range, further dropping the data rate without decreasing the display size would likely impact poorly on the quality. If you plan to keep the display size and some loss in visual and audio quality is to be allowed you might try dropping the video data rate to about 1000 Kbps and encode the audio as mono at 32 Kbps/32.0 KHz or 64 Kbps/44.1 or 48.0 KHz.
Encoding to WMV 9 would require the Flip4Mac "Studio" encode/decode package ($49). Visual Hub ($23+) will do an older WMV encode and an AVI encode (don't know what audio/video codecs are used here). Since AVI is basically a generic file container that Microsoft stopped supporting officially about a decade ago, many codec combinations are possible and your source would depend on which one/ones you wished to specifically use and is somewhat dependent on both platform and operating system. As to MOV files, this is the QT generic file container and any compression combination (including WMV and AVI files) can be stored in the MOV container using the QT Pro or MPEG Streamclip "Save As..." File menu option.

  • How to manage a huge movies library to limited 160GB AppleTV hard disk ?

Hi, I own a huge movies library (1TB) into iTunes ("by reference" on externl hard disk connected to my iMac) and looking forward to manage it from my ATV without having iTunes opened on my iMac, I already know to achieve this is to sync the contents to ATV but doing they will be copied to internal ATV hard disk which in turn is very limited (160GB).
Hence I'm asking you which could be the best settings on iTunes to let me:
    1) having the entire library on ATV (I mean titles)
    2) watching the movie I choose (not yet seen) on ATV
Furthermore I know that it's possible to setup iTunes in order to have on ATV only content not already seen but, I guess, this could point not having the entire "list" of movies on ATV, am I right ?
    Hoping to being clear.
    dalrmi.

this would be a great feature to have in Airport Extreme or Time Capsule. (if anybody reads these) I never understood why Apple didn't make Time Capsule do exactly what you ask for.
Like other people said, the best ways are to leave your machine on for streaming which isn't that bad over wireless, or to build a 160GB playlist of videos and movies and sync just that list over. Every few days you can swap a few out and they'll stay on the Apple TV... great for kids shows they'll watch 15 times in a row anyway. I believe there is also some settings for "newest added" and the Apple TV will "remember" what you watched last in some cases as it caches the stream from iTunes until the device is full.

  • How many GB is an average movie?

I'm trying to decide which iPad to get; how many GB is the average movie. If I watch occasional movies, and have half a dozen books and some--not a huge amount--of music on it, what size do I need?

how many GB is the average movie.
This basically depends on how you encode your own content or what you normally buy. My content tends to range from 500-800 MBs for original 5th Generation iPod files to 8.24 GBs for an HD encoding of Avatar for playback comparisons on different devices/monitors. Basically, it is just a tradeoff between quality and quantity for most people. My advice, is to always buy the highest capacity device you can afford. In most cases you will find it still wont be enough by the time you are ready to upgrade to a newer device.

  • How can i burn an ISO movie and have it watchable?

Hello! I have a client who has a movie file as an .ISO for some reason. How can i turn that into a watchable format and put it on DVD? Thanks!

An ISO file is basically just a disk image, so much depends on how it was encoded.
What do you see when you double-click the file?
If it is TS folder it will contain VOB files etc. These can be converted to a DV stream for iMovie using mpegStreamclip (just drop the entire folder into the Streamclip window and select what conversion you want):
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, but you must also have the Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.

  • How can I put my Divx movie in my keynote presentation slide?

I installed Quicktime codecs. After that I can see divx movie by Quicktime.
    But, here is my question.
When I want to use a part of the Divx movie, I did editing the movie and then I tried to convert the movie. But, it usually take a long time. I want to know how I can put the divx movie in my slide without encoding....
    Thank you..

Converting to MPEG-4 is going to take a long time depending on the duration of the content. How long is the clip you're trying to encode?
If you want to edit out the parts you don't want with QuickTime then encode with something faster, that's an option, too. When you save the edited version, you can save it as a reference movie, then drop that reference movie into iSquint.
    http://www.isquint.org
It's much faster and has a simple interface for higher or lower quality. Try that to see if it's fast enough. If not, there are other options as well (for example, using the reference movie directly in Keynote).

  • How can I keep tabs on the file size when importing from the Event Library into a Project? I want to ensure the movie will fit onto a 4.7Gb disc?

How can I keep tabs on the file size when importing from the Event Library into a Project? I want to ensure the movie will fit onto a 4.7Gb disc?

iDVD does not care about file sizes, as it compresses the file to the standard DVD format of mpeg2.
It only cares about length i.e. max 2 hours including titles etc.
    iDVD encoding settings:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/7.0/en/11417.html
    Short version:
Best Performance is for videos of up to 60 minutes
Best Quality is for videos of up to 120 minutes
Professional Quality is also for up to 120 minutes but even higher quality (and takes much longer)
Professional Quality: The Professional Quality option uses advanced technology to encode your video, resulting in the best quality of video possible on your burned DVD. You can select this option regardless of your project’s duration (up to 2 hours of video for a single-layer disc and 4 hours for a double-layer disc). Because Professional Quality encoding is time-consuming (requiring about twice as much time to encode a project as the High Quality option, for example) choose it only if you are not concerned abo
In both cases the maximum length includes titles, transitions and effects etc. Allow about 15 minutes for these.
You can use the amount of video in your project as a rough determination of which method to choose. If your project has an hour or less of video (for a single-layer disc), choose Best Performance. If it has between 1 and 2 hours of video (for a single-layer disc), choose High Quality. If you want the best possible encoding quality for projects that are up to 2 hours (for a single-layer disc), choose Professional Quality. This option takes about twice as long as the High Quality option, so select it only if time is not an issue for you.
Use the Capacity meter in the Project Info window (choose Project > Project Info) to determine how many minutes of video your project contains.
NOTE: With the Best Performance setting, you can turn background encoding off by choosing Advanced > “Encode in Background.” The checkmark is removed to show it’s no longer selected. Turning off background encoding can help performance if your system seems sluggish.
And whilst checking these settings in iDVD Preferences, make sure that the settings for NTSC/PAL and DV/DV Widescreen are also what you want.

  • Encode subtitles in movies

    Hi,
Currently subtitles work if I name than exactly the same as movie file and place in the same location, but I'd like to know how can I encode them in the movie so they also work on iPad and other iDevices. Which (free/commercial) tool to use?
    Thanks

I have been experiencing the exact same issue both in iTunes and QuickTime

Really? I need to check that out!
You should certainly be able to add content by reference to itunes from such a disk (even before the update) - so long as itunes knows the location of the file (set Preferences not to copy to local library when adding the media) it will stream it to AppleTV if the disk is available.
I hope you're right, but I'd be surprised if current Extremes can be upgarded to provide a full Home Sharing service - marvellous if they can but I'd be surprised as i've long said we need an Apple media server either based on TC or AE to do this kind of thing.

You don't use Airplay.  You set up Home Sharing on both and under the Computers section of AppleTV you'll then find it under Movies (or Rentals if rented), assuming it's in a compatible format.

That error can happen for many reasons...one of the reasons that I occassionaly get it is because I try exporting a movie to an external drive that has been formated in the old FAT32 instead of the NTSF standard.  FAT32 only allows for file sizes up to 2 gigs.  And as soon as it reaches that...I would get that error.  I don't know if that is why you are getting that error...but it would be easy to check.  1) are you generating a file that is over 2 gigs?  2) is your drive that you are exporting to FAT 32 (just right click the drive in My Computer and select "properties" then just look for what it says next to "file system".

I just noticed that some of the movies I had in iTunes did not get transferred to the iPhone 5. The missing movies are shown as generic movie icons in the iTunes panel and are checked to select them. But they do not show up in iPhone Videos. How do I get the original movies to show up again and transfer to the iPhone? I recently upgraded Mac OS to 10.6.8

    1. iTunes won't offer cloud downloads for songs that it "thinks" are in your library, even if it "knows" the files are missing. If you've exhaustively searched for the missing files and there is no prospect of repair by restoring to them to their original locations, or connecting to new ones, then delete that tracks that display both the missing exclamation mark and are of media kind Purchased/Protected AAC audio file. Don't hide from iTunes in the cloud when asked, close iTunes, then reopen. You can download from the cloud links or iTunes Store > Quicklinks > Purchased > Music > Not on this computer > All songs > Download all.
    2. Why? Not sure, perhaps 3rd party tools or accidental key presses combined with previously hidden warning messages when trying to organize the library. There is a hint that using the feature to downsample media as it is synced to a device may also be involved, though I've not replicated it. Whatever the reason a backup would protect your media.

There's obviously a simple answer to my problem, but I can't seem to find it. I made a home movie on my mac. I shared it with iTunes. I then looked for it in videos on my ipad. No sign of it. I found it among the photos and videos in the camera section. How to I get this home movie into my videos. Homesharing is on, but clearly hasn't solved the problem. Do I have to sync my ipad with itunes on my mac? Seems a bit complicated for such a simple task. After all, I can email it to my family without a problem. Anyone tell me what I'm missing?

Have you tried clicking the share icon when it is selected (the box with and arrow at the top) to see if you get an option to "open in..." and then select videos app.
I have not done this so not sure it will work but an idea to try.
