How Do I Encrypt a Folder / File?

I would like to encrypt a folder (or maybe just a file) on my desktop -- not the whole hard drive.
People say to "use a disk image" but I have no iead what that means.
Any suggestions?
I'm running OS X 10.6.8
Thanks

  • How do I encrypt a data file so that only I can retrieve the info?

How do I encrypt a data file so that it cannot be read without the proper authority?
I have an application where the customer should not have access to the data I need to record for troubleshooting purposes.  (there are industrial secrets I wish to protect)  My plan is to record a datalog (currently I am producing a tab-delimited spreadsheet format) whenever the device is running and hide the files where they will probably not be found.  But some sort of encryption or at least password protection would be better.
I've never tried to do this before, but thought it would be fairly easy.  Maybe I'm just not looking in the right places.
    Thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Well, you could look into something like DES, Triple DES, AES, etc.  There are libries floating around for these written in LabVIEW.  I'm not sure about the cost though.
If you want a really simple way to protect your data, just invert all or some of the bits in each byte of your file.  It is super simple and turns a nice ASCII text file into noise when read from a text file.

How do you encrypt a pdf file before sending

    Hi paleo1453,
I'm not sure I follow your question. Are you asking how you can apply security to a PDF, or how the Acrobat.com online services encrypt files when you send them?

  • How do you know what folder/file to modify?

Ok, I've had Sun Support on site and even they couldn't tell me exactly how this works and the Sun Support phone support is clueless...
All I need to do is change the "look & feel" of the portal so how am I supposed to know what folder/file to modify to get what I need?
    Setup:
    * Nested Tabs setup and working
    * JSPTabContainer contains the following:
    * First Top Tab is:
    <Container name="MyNestedTabContainer" provider="JSPTabContainerProvider" merge="replace">
    * Then first inner tab is thus:
    <Container name="MyHomeTableContainer" provider="JSPTableContainerProvider" merge="replace">
    1) What folder do I modify to change the look of either tab? I tried changing the JSPTabContainer/tabs.jsp and nothing happens. Do I have to change the default/JSPTabContainerProvider/tabs.jsp file instead?
    2) There is also a banner line with "Sun One Portal Server" between the tabs, how do I get rid of this?
I've spent hours scouring the files using trial and error to try and get rid of simple things like this and almost at the point to chuck the whole thing into the trash can. I could have created a portal using Tiles by now...

I find it IMPOSSIBLE to believe that this is the
recommended way to do things.I do not say it is the recommended way, I'm just telling this is a quick way I personally use to do it. Sorry if you do not find my script useful.
Where or where is all of this directory creation and
copying of files found in the documentation? I guess it is described in the Portal Server Desktop, look for "sesta" which is an example organization name use there.
Where does it say that in order to make changes, you have
to all of this?I do not say you have to do it, neither the documentation. That is just a recommendation I suggest to avoid messing with globally used files, and clearly isolating your work from what is provided with the product.
Are we just supposed to find it all out via osmosis?I guess tha documentation and this developer's forum are a better option ...
I am extremely frustrated with this product right now.Sorry about that.
The display profile merging and the template directories form an extremely powerful tool, but with a learning curve longer that those found with simpler approaches.
Once you got them though, you'll find they allow you to easily and elegantly cover a very wide range of needs that wouldn't be achievable otherwise.

  • How do I encrypt a pdf file (ebook) to prevent unauthorized distribution of my ebook?

    Hi, guys.
I am planning to sell my ebook from my website. It is in Word format. I would like to create a PDF file for viewers since it is versatile, then encrypt the PDF file to prevent unauthorized distribution of my book. How do I do that?
    Thanks
    genesis

If you want to be friendly to your users, generate encrypted .epub format and not .pdf.
pdf is great for its original purpose of print preparation, but terrible for more flexible formats.
As different ereaders have different screen sizes and resolutions, and different people will want to read with different font sizes (**),
pdf format will be very hostile in all cases except the one that excactly fits how you make the pdf.
I think that InDesgin will create encrypted epub or pdf files for you.
For the encryption to be effective for your purposes you need to encrypt differently for different AdobeIDs.
Looks as if Adobe's official way to do that is Adobe Content Server.
I suspect the cost of all that adds up quite a bit; you may want to look at third party solutions that handle all the infrastructure for you.
(**) or even the same person: I change font sizes depending how tired I am.

  • How can I encrypted my SWF file

    Hi
I will create  some SWFs and will want it to be played on WINCE device platform, but i need the SWF be encrypted and only played on my device. How can we do?

All rather vague so I'll just guess:
    1. Restore from your back up
    or
    2. Use a file recovery application like File Salvage - you can download a free trial and it will scan the disk for you and tell you with might be recoverable. Actual recovery will require that you purchase the app. There may be many files with the same or similar names. Always recover the largest file size.
There are other such apps. Search on Macupdate or the App Store

  • How do i encrypt a folder?

I want to have a folder on my desktop that is encrypted and password protected.  I just need a folder to keep a few really important documents -- I don't need to encrypt my whole hard drive.
I thought I was doing what I wanted by following:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1578
Instead it seems Snow Leopard wanted to encrypt my whole HD -- I hit cancel.
What should I do to get one little encrypted / password protected folder?
    I'm running OS X 10.6.8 on an i3 iMac
    Thanks

Those instructions create a password protected disk image.
Just drag your folder onto it.

  • How do I encrypt a folder for email

I'd like to encrypt, ideally compress and encrypt a series of pdfs and mail them to a Windows person.
I know stuffit does that but it is cumbersome and I have an old version.
Any ideas on a modern utility - or using OSX

First open the file on your computer.  Then go to file>print.  Click on the PDF button and then select save as PDF.  Select where to save it, then select security options.  Then save it and give it a password.  Now open Mail and create a new message and attach the password protected PDF.  When you attach the PDF a notice comes up that the PDF is password protected and it asks for the password.  Don't put in the password, just send the email.  The person receiving the email will have to put in the password to open it.  It works very well, even when receiving it on an iPad.

  • How to change Attachments / Image Folder  file path to IP Address

    Hello Experts
We will be defining Attachments/Image Folder in >Administration->System Initiation>General settings>Paths.
Then the path will be  something like this ."
    server\attachments\
Here instead of Having server name, i want to have IP Address of Server machine.  It may  look like this ""
    192.168.1.xx\attachments\.
    can this be possible?
    Thanks

    HI,
By the way the official way is browse, ... for example excel path. I have tried with my computers c$ share.(
    127.0.0.1\c$)
    1. Open file browser of your machine
    2. go to network places, and turn of left panel
    3. Add a new network place and enter the ip address based share
    127.0.0.1\c$
    4. Save this new network place
    5. open >Administration->System Initiation>General settings>Paths in B1 and select the address from network places you have saved.
My XP has been automatically converted the shortcut of the network place into ip address based share.
but fast solution only for test....
    select excelpath from oadm
--update oadm set excelpath = '\\192.168.1.1\c$'
Use the system information to detect the field names in OADM and OADP table.
    Regards,
    J.
Ps: do not forget points for the solution

  • How to recover encrypted folder after formatting PC ?

    Hello,
My problem is the following: I've encrypted a folder and put it in an external HD. Later the PC was formatted so that the original user which I used to encrypt the folder was lost and now I can't access the folder in my external HD anymore.
How can I recover this folder's content?
    Thank you!

    Hi Tavaresv,
Have you tried to export the keys to an external media when you encrypted the folders with the Encrypted File System ?
Usually we will get a chance to export the keys when we encrypted the folders and it is saved as a .pfx format file.
If you have exported it ,you just need to import it by double clicking it and you will have access to the folder again .If you haven`t exported the certificate and key .I am afraid you will lose the encrypted data forever.
    Best regards

How do I access my encrypted User Account files from my Back Up hard drive?  Time Machine  was used to create the back up disk; File Vault was used to encrypt the files.

Thanks.  I will try going through TM.  Since my Simpletech is on the way out, I'll be plugging in a new external hard drive (other than the back-up drive) and trying to restore the library to the new drive.  Any advice or warning if this is NOT the right thing to do?
Meanwhile, that is a great tip to do an alternate back-up using a different means.  It's been tough to figure out how to "preserve access" to digital images and files for posterity, knowing the hardware will always fail/obsolesce sooner or later, and that "clouds" are only as good as their consistent and reliable accessibility.  Upping the odds with redundancy will help dull the edge of my "access anxiety", though logically, it can never relieve it.  Will look into
    Carbon Copy Cloner.

    Hello all.
I would like to encrypt a single file to place in my shared folder for my wife to access.
Is there a way to do this?

An encrypted disk image should do it - see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107333
