How do I encrypt an existing external disk?

I have two G-Raid Thunderbolt RAID disks.  Each is set up as a RAID 1 stripe (2 disks into one volume).
I have my system disk encrypted with filevault, and would like to enable full disk encryption for the external disks as well.
I tried the "Right click on disk in finder, select encrypt" option, but after I enter my choice of PW, I just get the error:
"A partition, not a whole disk, is required for this operation."
Is this possible?  Preferably, without formatting my disks all over again and enabling the encrypted FS at that time?

Grr, I think I just found my answer:
"FileVault disk encryption cannot be used with some highly partitioned disk configurations, such as RAID disk sets."
That's too bad.

How to save iPhoto folders to external disk?

    You are not clear
In iPhoto folders go not hold photos - they are organizanially ielements and hold other folder or albums
are you talking aobt events by any chance? What do you want to do?
To move the photos form events to an external drive select them and export - see the user tip on exporting for details on the options available
to run iPhoto with your library on an EHD
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

    Hi,
I have a HP laptop model Elitebook 8460P. While working, it gave a physical dump error screen (blue) and then while restarting, it gave the following error.
    BootDevice Not Found
Please install an operating system on your hard disk
    Hard Disk – (3F0)
Now, I heard that I need to replace the hard disk with a new one, which is fine with me. But when I asked one of the data recovery agency to retrieve my data from the failed hard disk, they told me that they cant do it, as the hard disk has been encrypted.
Has anyone know how to remove the encryption or which agency does the removal of encryption on the hard disk, sothat i can get the important data that I have ??
The media is SSD and the harddisk model no. is SSDSA2BW160G3H from Intel.
    Help me out please.
    Thanks ..... Srinivas

Hold down the cmd (⌘) key and drag the item onto the desktop. It will disappear in a puff of virtual smoke.

  • How to move Imovie 11 to external disk

I am running out of space on my internal disk.  Need help for step by step instructions to migrate Imovie permanently from internal disk to external disk.  Thanks.

You will need an external drive that is formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled). If your drive is not formatted this way, you can reformat it using Disk Utility.
In iMovie, click VIEW/EVENTS BY DISK. This should let you see your external drive in the Project List and in the Event List.
Select any Project, and hold the Command Key down as you drag and drop the small icon for the project to the small icon for the external drive in the Project Library List.
Now, select the Project on the external drive, and click FILE/CONSOLIDATE MEDIA. This will enable you to move any Events referenced in the Project, and also move copies of any photos or music you have used.
    Repeat for all projects.
If there are any Events that have not been used in Projects, you can move them now by holding down the Command Key while dragging and dropping the small icon for the Event to the small icon for the external drive in the Event Library List. Repeat for all remaining events.
You should now have all your projects and events on the external drive.
Now you can edit your movies from the external drive.

  • How do I restore from an external disk to my new computer?

I changed my PC, and took a copy of all photos to an external drive. Now, when I want to save them to my new PC, it does not succeed - next time I open my Elements, there is a ?-mark, and the program can't find the photo unless I connect the external drive again. How can I save all photos to my new PC?

    Tiramiso
What version of Premiere Elements are you using and on what computer operating system is it running. For now I will assume this involves a media reconnect in Premiere Elements and not the Elements Organizer.
When you import media into a Premiere Elements project, all you get in the project are copies of the originals that are at their hard drive save location. But, the project needs to trace back to the originals at the hard drive save location where they were when they were first imported into the project.
You should not have any problems when importing media from their current location when you open new projects.
How many saved closed projects do you have that were created before you switched the location of the source media of the project. (Remember, you will run into this problem if, after you save close the project, you move, delete, or rename its files/folders.) The "Where is the file....?" messages are good choices for the media reconnects, but... Let us know how many saved closed reopened projects are involved. Also, if the setup on the other computer still exists, it might be a consideration to archive the projects there and transfer the Copied Folder from the archive process to the new computer.
If instead this is a Photoshop Elements Elements Organizer based issue, please let us know.
    Thanks.

  • How to use iTunes folder on external disk as F: when it was E:

I have my iTunes folder (organised) on an external drive, which has been E:. I am migrating to a new laptop, where D: is a virtual drive and E: is the DVD drive, so my external drive is F:. I can't change the letter for the DVD drive, so am stuck with F: I tried clicking on the .itl file, but as all the music is defined as being on E:, iTunes doesn't find it.
How can I get round this in the easiest way? The only way I can think of would be to change the location (with Keep Organised) on the old laptop to somewhere on c: (I should have enough space), then after closing iTunes, change the letter to F, then change the location again. However, I though I'd ask in case there's a better and easier method.

You should be able to change the drive letter of the DVD. I always change mine to Z:
If the library is in a self contained folder on the external drive then it will survive a change of drive letter. Note clickling on .itl file launches iTunes, but it doesn't change which library file gets opened. You need to hold down shift as iTunes starts to do that.
With a split library iTunes sometimes makes a good stab at relinking files if you correct the media folder location, attempt to play a file, track it down and then use the same location for other missing files. Alternatively I have a script called FindTracks which can help.

  • Migrating content from an encrypted Time Machine external disk (will not easily work)

I recently purchased an SSHD to upgrade my Mac. I preferred not to completely restore from Time Machine, but rather to install a new copy of Mavericks on the new disk and then migrate my TM content afterwards. At the end of installation, Mavericks proposed the option to migrate data from a TM backup, which I chose.
It turns out that the Migration Assistant did not recognize any disk, perhaps because it was encrypted, nor displayed any way to select the volume and unlock it by entering its password. Despite what Pondini says the Time Machine backups disk was not seen by the Mac: as workaround I had to create a fictitious user, log in, unlock the disk (that was immediately recognized by the system) and then run the Migration Assistant from there (by the way, after 4 hours I finally logged into my migrated account and found out that apps were not imported at all!)
I find all this quite not…applish! I could have preferred to unencrypt the TM disk rather than
Is there anyone facing this same experience? Hope that this, if it's a bug, will be fixed, otherwise I'll have to make a TM backup on a secondary disk (which I don't own so big).

Well a google search would appear that disk utility will show you the disk regardless if it's mounted or unmounted. you're best bet would be to unmount the disk in finder, shut down the computer completely, unplug it from a power source, and then unplug the firewire...
I think this is your safest bet but then again, I'm not that worried about ejecting my disks.
you get no error messages when you right click and eject the disk in in disk utilty? you said you have a my disk, do you mean My Book by western digital? I know that they load software onto the machine for encryption purposes. have you tried ejecting the disk from there? I uninstalled said software so I can't tell you if there is an option for that or not.

  • How do I encrypt and existing iTunes backup?

Is there any way to encrypt a backup besides making a whole new encrypted one in iTunes?

Ouch. This is (potentially) a Big Question.
The short answer is, look at the Java Cryptography Extension (JCE) API. It'll do all the en/decryption you could ever want.
However, that isn't really what you need to think about (yet). If you encrypt the password, you'll need a key. Who gets to "know" that key? And how do they get it? And (most importantly) how do you keep "the bad guys" from knowing that key? In fact - who are "the bad guys" in your scenario?
Before anybody here can help, you really need to be able to explain all of these. Otherwise, we can throw algorithms and APIs at you all day, and not get you any closer to solving your problem...

  • How to put photos from an external disk to IPAD ?

The easiest way would seem to be to import the photos into a photo app on your computer that will sync with your iPad. That can be iPhoto or Aperture on the Mac. I have no experience with the PC. Then connect your iPad to your computer and open iTunes. Highlight your iPad in iTunes and in the Photo tab select how you wish to sync photos to the iPad.

  • How to force boot from an external disk

My main start up disk has crashed. I have made a cloned disk using Super Duper that I have checked recently and the computer will boot from it.  I also have another OS 10.6.3 on another internal disk.
I now want to boot from the cloned disk but the computer always defaults to the internal disk.  I have tried using Start Up Disk in sys preferences.  I have tried starting up with the option key held down.
Is there anything I can do to force the computer to start from the clone disk?
One other thing, I installed a 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black drive to replace the crashed start up disk but Disk Uitility won't initialize it.
The computer is a 2007 Xeon quad core on OS 10.6.8.
    Thanks

I got this, I think I did it right, not much into the terminal

  • How does time machine use the external disk space??

does time machine back up only the changed or new stuff or does it back up everything?  does this mean that if on "day one" it backed up 600 gb worth of data, the next back up on "day 2" would be 600gb+a few more things, or would it be 600gb+600gb+the few more things?  Does it back up "day one" in a whole package and "day two" in another package, or does it back up "day one", plus only the different things made from "day one" to "day two""?
similarly, does it keep stuff from the first back up ever, plus anything new or modified in the following back ups, then when it is full, does it let just the oldest files drop off?  or does it drop off everything from the initial backup?  that is, if I had 20mb of changes would it erase only 20mb of data to make the new data fit, or would it erase all 600gb from say "day one"?
    thanks for the answer!

  • Moving to an external disk?!

    Hi!
I just bought an external disk that will be dedicated for lightroom as the catalogs are becoming quite big.
So I did some googeling and found that it wouldn't be more trouble than moving all the files to the disk and then open up the catalog. The problem is that the pictures are still linked to the hard drive.
    So my question is:
    - How do I move to an external disk?
    - How can I make sure that the pictures are linked to the external disk and not to the computer?
    - Any other tips regarding this?

I don´t understand how and why I lost my external disk in my computer (macbook). What Do i have to do?...

well I have two machine in my house, one of them is a Toshiba with a Windows XP and I don´t have thats problem in it. Beside, when i use my pendrive for a short (5 minutes) period of time, it disconnects spontaneously and the OS gives me an error as if i disconnected my pendrive without putting it in the trash or ejecting with the right procedure first. Then, I have the same problem with a external disk and with a pendrive.

  • How do I encrypt my external hard drive and subsequently a specific file within it, using my Mac? I tried creating a disk image but permission was denied.

I have also currently used Time Machine on the external hard drive, along with saving other data. Hence, I am not sure if partitioning is going to delete any of this (a video I watched mentioned that using the + button when creating partitions retains current data). Backing up the external hard drive is out of the option since it is the back up to my Mac.
You can't encrypt a single file. I'm not sure what you did to try. You can make an encrypted disk image which begins with a folder, if desired. Or, you can just create a blank, encrypted disk image, then move your desired files into that.
While you could partition off the free space without erasing the disk, you cannot encrypt it because you need a GUID Partition table which requires you to repartition the entire drive, not just the free space.
