How Do I Enhance Black and White Images in Elements 4.0?

On PhototshopTV, I saw a tip for enhancing B&W in PhotoShop CS: Select Layer-New Adjustment layer-Channel Mixer; click the Monochrome box; change values to: Red +74, Green +26, Blue +48, Contrast -12.
I don't see Channel Mixer in Elements 4.0.
Is there a way to do this in Elements 4.0, please?
Thanks, Lance Warley

Lance,
The absence of Channel Mixer adjustment layers is an intentional design decision -- one of the differentiating features between the consumer-level Elements and the pro-level CS.
There have been posts, here, intimating that Richard Lynch, the author of "Hidden Power of Photoshop Elements" for versions 1-3, is said to be working on stuff for v4, which may include a Channel Mixer tool -- but that is still in the future.

    I hired a commercial artist to create a color image for the cover of a self published book. I want a black and white image for the inside. The commercial artist has not responded to this request. How do I determine the format of the color image, I'm guessing it's Illustrator's formatting but I don't know. How can I find out if Illustrator will open the file and allow alterations? The image opens only in Apple's Pages software?

    rons,
    It seems that all you have is a raster image, presumable PNG24 or JPEG, in RGB.
    It may have been created as raster artwork in Photoshop, or it may have been created as vector artwork with the help of Illy, or as a mixture of vector and raster artwork in either application, or both combined.
    If you just need to have a raster representation in black and white based on the current colour image, you may try this, in a new RGB document (View>Smart Guides are your friends):
    1) File>Place the image (you may tick Link or untick and have it embedded);
    2) Create a rectangle with black fill (R = G = B = 0), at least as large as the image, and place it behind the image (you may ClickDrag with the Rectangle Tool between opposite corners, then Ctrl/Cmd+X+B);
    3) Select all and in the Transparnecy palette flyout click Make Opacity Mask with both Clip and Invert Mask ticked.

  • How can I create a black and white image similar to what I see in the "Replace Color" tool?

    Hi all, I'm just wondering how I can create a black and white image similar to what I see in the preview window of the "Replace Color" tool. See attached screenshot for clarification -- I need the grass to be black while the soil is white or vice versa. Any tips?

    One way is to use Select>Color Range
    Make a new Color Fill Layer>White
    (Layer>New Fill Layer>Solid Color)
    Put a new color fill layer below>black
    Just invert the layer mask on the top fill layer for the opposite effect.

  • PSE 8 coloring a black and white image

    Okay, so I downloaded a free trial of PSE 8, so my experience with it is limited, which may contribute to my problem. I've watched tutorials on how to add color to a black and white photo using the paintbrush tool, though I haven't watched one for PSE 8.
    I'll make a new layer, paint part of the picture, and then add another layer. But when I click a different color to paint with, it changes the color of what I already painted, even though I'm on a different layer.
    Also when I tried to just save the image with one part painted, it didn't save it, and the image looked as it did originally.
    Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

    Hi,
    Are you using the right tool to paint on a layer?
    For coloring a black and white image, you need to save different areas of your image on a different layer and then use either Paint brush or a Paint bucket tool.
    It seems that you are selecting a wrong tool. For selecting Brush, press B.
    Then try painting on one part of the image and then go to the the color swatch present at the end of the tools panel on the left as :
    Now click on the foreground color swatch(on the top) to change the color with which you want to paint.This will not change the color of other layers on changing the color.

  • Im only starting and cant work out how to give a black and white photo blue eyes

    im a beginer and cant figer out how to give a black and white portrat photo blue eyes

    - If the original is B&W first change the picture's mode to color. In my PSE version with is done by Image > Mode > RGB Color.
    - Add a blank layer and set it's Blend Mode to Overlay or Color.
    - Activate the Brush tool, choose a dark blue color, and paint the eyes. If the result is too dark lower the layer's Opacity. Use the Eraser to remove excess color around the eyes.

  • Inverted black and white images in iPhoto 6

    After I recently upgraded to OS X 10.4.8, a number of black and white images in my iPhoto 6 library started showing up inverted (like negatives) when I open them. The thumbnails, however, are in regular black and white. This didn't happen using OS X 10.4.3. I can't seem to find a tool in iPhoto 6 to convert these images to the correct display. Do you have any explanations or suggestions?
    Macintosh PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    iPhoto 6 does not work well with Grayscale. You'll need to convert them to sRGB. They'll still be black & white, but they'll have a color profile that iPhoto 6 will accept. Old Toad created an Automator application to embed the sRGB profile into your photos. Go to his Toad's Cellar and download the "Embed wRGB Color Profile 2" App. In Finder go in your Originals folder, then drop a roll folder containing these photos onto the app.

  • "warming up" a black and white image pse6

    is there a way to change the tone of a black and white image to mimic the effect of using warm-tone photographic paper?

    Mike,
    I'm not sure what you mean by warm-tone photographic paper, but here are 2 methods I use to convert a picture to a sepia tone. They might work in your case.
    For both methods, first convert the picture to RGB mode if not already so (Image>Mode>RGB Color).
    Method 1
    Add a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer. In the Hue/Saturation dialog window, check the Colorize box and play around with the 3 sliders. If the result is too harsh, try lowering the layer's Opacity.
    Method 2
    Set the background color to white (you can type "d" to set the default B&W colors). Use the Color Picker to set the foreground color to the tone you want.
    Add a Gradient Map adjustment layer with the Color Blend Mode. In the Gradient Map window select the Foreground to Background option. If the result is too harsh, try lowering the layer's Opacity. You might also try changing the layer's Blend Mode to Multiply or Soft Light (or others) to get a slightly different look.

  • How to identify black and white images for dynamic collection ?

    Hello
    I would like to make a dynamic collection to quickly find my black & white pictures. It is very easy to do with your original files which have undergone a black and white (Grey) conversion under the developpement module : you have to specify "treatment - is - Grey level" in the dynamic collection description.
    But what about original Grey levels images ? I have some scans of black and white negatives, and I would like to see them in the same collection.
    I have tried to use EXIF metada, but none of them is related to this information (neither does IPTC). But such images are well detected as Grey levels images in the development module...
    I don't know how to do (unless manually tagging images of course).
    Does anybody have a clue for an automated solution ?
    Thanks
    Erwann

    yes Eclipse 2.0 provides runtime chartting.
    Please refer to this thread
    [chartting|Re: Charts won't appear in CR Viewer?]
    void AddChart(ReportClientDocument clientDoc, String chartTitle)
      ChartDefinition chartDefinition = new ChartDefinition();
      chartDefinition.setChartType(ChartType.group);
      IDataDefinition dataDefinition = clientDoc.getDataDefController().getDataDefinition();
      Fields conditionFields = new Fields();
      IField field = dataDefinition.getGroups().getGroup(0).getConditionField();
      conditionFields.addElement(field);
      chartDefinition.setConditionFields(conditionFields);
      Fields dataFields = new Fields();
      for (int i = 0; i < dataDefinition.getSummaryFields().size(); i++)
        IField summaryField = dataDefinition.getSummaryFields().getField(i);
        dataFields.addElement(summaryField);
      chartDefinition.setDataFields(dataFields);
      ChartObject chartObject = new ChartObject();
      chartObject.setChartDefinition(chartDefinition);
      ChartStyleType chartStyleType = ChartStyleType.pie;
      AreaSectionKind chartPlacement = AreaSectionKind.pageHeader;
      chartObject.getChartStyle().setType(chartStyleType);
      chartObject.setChartReportArea(chartPlacement);
      chartObject.getChartStyle().getTextOptions().setTitle(chartTitle);
      chartObject.setHeight(5000);
      chartObject.setWidth(5000);
      chartObject.setTop(1000);
      IArea reportHeaderArea = reportDefController.getReportDefinition().getReportHeaderArea();
      Section chartSection =(Section)reportHeaderArea.getSections().getSection(0);
      clientDoc.getReportDefController().getReportObjectController().add(chartObject, chartSection, 1);
    Further you can format the fields as per your requirement.
    Hope this helps

  • How to convert a black and white tif image to colour

    I want to convert a black and white tif image to colour. I opened it in Photoshop, changed the mode to RGB colour/8, saved it as psd, but when I use the Replace Colour dialogue box, I just get my colour showing as grey-scale. What’s the correct way to proceed?
    Thank you

    What’s the correct way to proceed?
    Joke?
    In Photoshop there are often more ways than one to achieve a task and none of them need be considered »wrong« as long as the result fits the intention, so »the correct way« seems to be problematic terminology.
    Anyway, one can use a Layer set to Blend Mode Color and paint on that with whatever colors.
    Or one can use Solid Color Layers set to Blend Mode Color.
    Or Hue/Saturation Layers …
    To edit contrast if necessary Curves or Levels Adjustment Layers can be employed.

  • How do I undo black and white default in photoshop?

    Whenever I place a colored photo into photoshop it automatically is placed as a black and white photo by default.  I don't want this to happen.  How do I fix this?

    You have to be sure the file you are placing it into is rgb mode and not grayscale.
    If you File > Place a color photo into a grayscale document, it will turn grayscale.
    So before you do that, go to Image mode in Photoshop and select RGB.

  • How to copy a black and white layer to the mask of another layer.....

    Earlier I asked, "How?"
    Got a reply, but the solution didn't work in PSE 10.
    After trial and error, I figured it out.
    When dealing with abstract art or even hair, it is too time consuming to make a
    mask pixel by pixel.
    Load the image you want to mask into a new layer and convert it to black and white.  You might need to
    adjust contrast/brightness to maximize the effect..
    Using the Magic Wand tool, click on the WHITE area of the image.
    Click Edit/Copy.
    Click on the layer you want the mask copied to.
    Next, click on "Add new layer mask" button on the bottom of the layers panel.
    Your mask should appear and is now ready for a touching up!.

  • I have a CanoScan Lide 700F scanner ,how do I scan Black and white neg.and turn them into positives?

    I am scaning all old pictures, docts,  slides ,but I have alot of b&w negs verious sizes, how can I turn  them into b&w positives??

    Hi Teddy.
    The MP Navigator EX software that was bundled with your CanoScan LiDE 700F can be used to scan your black and white negatives.  To use the MP Navigator, please follow these steps:
     1.  Start MP Navigator EX and open the Navigation Mode screen.
     2.  Point to Scan/Import and click Film.
     3.  Place the film on the Platen.
     4.  Click Specify... to set the document size and scanning resolution as required.
     5.  When setting is completed, click OK.
    Important
    Film may not be scanned correctly when Film Type in the Scan Settings dialog box is set to Auto. In that case, select the type of film in Film Type and scan again.
    Note
    To scan black and white film, it is recommended that you select Black and White Negative Film or Black and White Positive Film for Film Type in the Scan Settings dialog box.
     6.  Click Scan.  Preview scan starts.  When preview scan of the film is completed, the preview image appears.
    Important
    If a message for calibration appears, remove the film, then place the Film Adapter Unit over the first frame of the Film Guide and click OK.
     7.  When the calibration is completed, follow the on-screen instructions to load the film into the Film Guide, then click OK.
    Note
    Preview image does not appear when the Preview before scanning checkbox is not selected in the Scan Settings dialog box. The scanned images appear directly in the Thumbnail window.
     8.  Select the checkbox of the frame and click Scan.  When scanning is completed, the Scan Complete dialog box opens.
     9.  Select Scan or Exit. To scan another frame, place the Film Adapter Unit over the frame you want to scan, then select Scan. Select Exit to end.
    The scanned images appear in the Thumbnail window.
    10.  Edit the scanned images as required.  Use Edit Tools to rotate images, select a part of an image, etc.
    Note
    First select images to edit. (Selected images are outlined in orange.) Drag the mouse or use Shift + arrow keys to select multiple images.
    11.  Save the scanned images.

  • How do I print black and white on Mountain Lion?

    Hey.
    Does anyone know how to print black and white on Mountain Lion?
    I searched the community and Google but I couldn't find anything...
    Regards,

    It's usually in the Print dialog when you File > Print.  Select the Show details button, the change the option in the horizontal line to Paper Type/Quality.  Click the Color Options triangle and change Color to Greyscale.

  • How can I print black and white

    I would like the option of printing in black and white from my iPad.   Does anyone know if this is possible? Just hooked up Epson XP -600 AirPlay wi fi printer.
    Does this require an app?   Prints fine in color.

    If you print a B&W image, some printers will still use color ink in the process.
    There is no way to tweak print settings on the iPad or iPhone. Apple designed it to automatically apply default settings to any print jobs.
    I recommend looking at an app like Printopia. This acts as an inexpensive "print server" for your iPad which allows you to configure advanced settings from the computer, such as custom paper sizes and color options.
