How do I enlarge tiny menus and tools (CS5, Win 8.1)

I installed Photoshop CS5 on a Windows 8.1 machine (3200x1800pixel resolution). The menus and tools are really tiny---about half the usual size (see image below). This also occurs in Adobe Bridge, but not Acrobat 9.0. No other programs are so affected (e.g. MS Word, Chrome web browser). I have tried lowering the computer's screen resolution without any effect on Photoshop CS5 (other programs appear enlarged then, but not CS5). I have not had any problem when this program was installed on a Windows 7 machine. Any ideas?

There is another thread on this at
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1323412
In the meantime, this is a workaround solution:

And yes, it is a bit of a silly situation.

Thanks for the help. I installed CC and it fixed everything but Photoshop. I guess I will have to use my old laptop for images until Adobe fixes the problem. Do you know of a place where we can send issues like these to Adobe?

Is a readable interface an unreasonable expectation?
Not at all, and we should well expect that Adobe is working on it.  By their own admission they ARE working on it.  I don't sense "deafening silence" at all.  But results won't/can't be instantaneous and they're not going to promise you release dates.  Life is not like that, no matter how many times you click your red shoes together.
It's not hard to understand that right now only a small minority of Photoshop users are running high dpi screens that can't take advantage of the 200% setting.  And it was the choice of those users to buy such hardware even in light of the fact that Photoshop can't work fully well on it yet.  Adobe didn't force anyone to buy a 150 ppi display.
Frankly, if you've chosen such hardware even though Photoshop doesn't offer 150% scaling, it's your own fault.  I recently invested well over $1000 in a new monitor and I planned well enough ahead to buy a 100ppi model (Dell U3014, and it's GREAT).  There's a reason that very new technology is called "bleeding edge".  If you want "To Work" instead of "Dealing With Quirks", sometimes you have to be conservative.
A majority of Photoshop users DO expect new and useful features, however, such as new tools, new camera support in Camera Raw, etc., so Adobe understandably cannot dedicate every resource they have to revamping Photoshop's user interface just for a special few folks who have irresponsibly adopted new display technology.
We can debate all day how much Adobe ought to be spending on engineering development, but you and I don't run the company.  We don't make business decisions for them.  I do, however, claim to understand their capabilities and limitations - possibly better than most - because I'm in the same business.
I can only recommend you be patient.  One day Photoshop will respond to your desktop settings.
What the heck has anybody ever accomplished here, with Adobe, in either fashion?
Rhetorical or not, some quite tangible things do come to mind...
At one time I couldn’t paste my clipboard containing a grayscale image into a new document via an action assigned to a key; the color engine would crash.  Today I can do so without incident.
At one time multiple Help windows would pop up unexpectedly, often when working in the Styles panel.  Today they don’t.
At one time I had to select Basic GPU mode.  Today I use Advanced GPU mode without a problem.
Once running Liquify or Smart Sharpen or a number of other things were slow, especially on big images.  Now they're quite fast, with GPU acceleration.
At one time an action could not write data back to a document when in windowed mode.  Today it works.
At one time panorama stitching and focus stacking did not work.  Now it works.
At one time most filters only worked on 8 bits/channel data.  Now many of them can handle 16 bits/channel.
Once naysayers predicted that the Photoshop Photography bundle would shoot up in price.  Yet today it's still $9.99 a month.
Once it was impossible to read Photoshop's UI on a 200+ ppi screen.  Now there's a new 200% setting for that.
I'm sure I can think of other things.  And of course the software isn't perfect today.  It never will be absolutely perfect.
Station_two, are you keeping up with the latest Photoshop releases?  If not, I submit that your rhetoric may be falling out of date.

  • How do I fix latest FF update which has removed all icons, menus and tool bars and i am left with an unuseable black shape.

I allowed FF to update as normal. When opening FF afterwards I have only a black rectangle where the normal browser window was, and where all the icons, address bars, menus etc etc were there is nothing.. I have tried system restore and re installing, but there is no change. All other programs seem to be OK.

hello, other users with this problem all had an embedded intel hd3000 graphics card with an old driver present. in case this also applies to you, here would be a link to update the driver, which in turn should also address the black firefox problem: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=23764 (for win7 64 bit)
in case this doesn't solve the issue or does not apply to your system, start firefox into safemode '''by pressing the shift key while the application is launching''' & disable hardware acceleration in the firefox ''menu ≡ > options > advanced > general'' (that setting will take a restart of the browser to take effect).

  • CS6 menus and tool bars too small

I have a new Dell XPS15 laptop with Windows 8. Installed Photoshop CS6 & all tool bars and menus are too tiny. I've contacted Dell Support and Adobe Support and everyone blames the other guy. Please help.

This is a PC only issue, I believe Macs with Retina displays do not have this problem...  I just got a Dell M3800 with a QHD+ 3200x1800 display and sadly yes, all Adobe CC products and AVID editing software are pretty much unusable in hi-res mode under Windows 8.1.  That is especially disturbing when Dell claims that the M3800 is certified to run those applications without mention of the resolution limitation which is a pretty big deal for anyone working in the graphic and video business.  False advertising it is

  • Switched to Adobe CC, menus and tools are TEENY and not readable

I have gone into preferences, interface, and set the UI font size to large, but this is not large. I have reset the workspaces as well, I am in standard screen mode. This screen shot shows the menu drop down, vs. the menu labels and the tools, you can see the size difference. LightRoom is okay, this is not even readable. Photoshop on my other machine (CS5, not CC) is fine. The resolution is the same for all programs, and LightRoom and other programs are fine, it is just PhotoShop that is very, very small.
Screenshot with menu drop down, note the tools on the side, and the menu labels at the top, not readable because they are so small:
Screenshot with LightRoom on top, you can see the difference in the sizing of the menus:

  • How can I enlarge my tabs and keep them the way I set them? My page zooms in and out but my file, bookmarks, etc. tabs stay the same size.

using the view tab, I select Zoom. Zoom in only increases appearance of web page. The tabs (File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Tools and Help) all remain the same size! Way too small to read! This sucks and I don't LIKE IT!

That sounds very handy. Nice going. A kind of backup would be to
create a folder in the Bookmarks Manager, and keep a list of links there.
Just one note. The sessionstore file shows the last windows / tabs that
are open. Because the window with the 90 tabs was closed first, then the
other, that is what caused your issue.

  • How do I hide sub menus in Dreamweaver CS5.5?

Hi - I'm at the very beginning of sorting out my first web site in Dreamweaver CS5.5. I'm using a vertical menu with sub menus. The submenus are permanently visible. I was earlier able to make them only appear when you roll over them with a mouse...but the sub menus then stuck way out into the next column.
What I'd like is to have submenus that are hidden until you roll over them with a mouse. I'd like the submenus to be indented slightly from the main menu (like they are now, except that they're not hidden right now).
I seem to have changed a preference in Dreamweaver, because now when I delete the vertical menu and start all over again, I end up with the same formatting in my new menu. I can no longer end up with a hidden submenu items at all when I insert a vertical menu. I can create a horizontal menu with hidden submenu items, however, so I don't think I've changed the preference related to horizontal menus.
Thanks so much for your help with this!

  • Help with the tiny menu and type size of the UI...

Does anyone know of a way to make the menus and type LARGER in the User Interface? I am using the new indesign CC on a nwer iMac large display. Everything is SO tiny, my eyes really strain to see and read all the menus and tools. Anyway to fix this?
    Thanks!

You can zoom the screen by setting key combinations and trackpad gestures in Mountain Lion's Preferences > Accessibility. In OS X 10.6.x and earlier, IIRC it's in Preferences > Universal Access.

Windows will scale applications display or windows will not scale application display depending on how the application is coded.  Photoshop is coded in a way that its display is not scaled by windows.  Photoshop knows about your displays high pixel count not its resolution  so it uses its pixels  however it does not scale its UI to make it usable on your display.  Other application let Windows  scale their display output.   For example Microsoft default for is Surface Pro 3, 216 ppi display is to scale applications display up 150% so the surface pro 3 display which has 2160x1440 pixels a 216 ppi resolution look like at display with the user is using with 1440x960 pixels.  The Application works like the display is 1440x960 and Windows scale those pixels to the displays using the displays  2160x1440 pixels the effectively changing it resolution to 144ppi rather than the actual 216ppi.
The reg update  and external manifest file  effectively tells photoshop its working on such a size display display some number of pixel wide and some number photoshop uses that as the display size  in turn Windows scale those pixels to use the displays 2160x1440 pixels efector lowing its 216ppi resolution.  Photoshop CC 2014 2X UI would be like using windows 200% option applications would be shown the are working on a display 1080x720 instead of the Surface Pro 3 2160x1440. Note that 1080x720 does not meet PS requirement of 1024x768.  Photoshop UI would not fit on the Surface Pro 3 display..
Since you have a 4k display if you have CC 2014 you can use its 2x UI effectively Photoshop will be running on a 1920x1080 display and have half the resolution of you 4K display  3840x2160 pixels four native pixels are use as a single pixel.   1920x1080 pixels exceed PS requirement.

  • How do I enlarge the font in messages received and sent?  I have it set at "13", but it is very, very small on my screen.  I can't seem to change the appearance of the tool bar even when I try to "customize".

How do I enlarge the font in messages received and sent?  I have the font set at "13", but the appearance on my screen is very, very small.  When I try to "customize the toolbar" to look like the tool bar above this message, I am unable to do so.  Please advise.  Thank you.

Thanks MartinR, yes the Toggle bars can be adjusted so that I can see all the tracks - just in the smallest setting - however this also creates a huge area of grey which serves no other purpose than to "use up screen space". If this is deliberate then there is nothing one can do - since presumably the additional profit made on screen sales is more important to Apple, than the combined annoyance to those working on a 13" laptop. Of course a 15" screen or even 17" screen may make this wastage less obvious. Please indicate that this is all incorrect and explain why it is important to have space waiting "for additional tracks", even if I have no intention of making additional tracks. If that is the answer then perhaps additional space to the left and right of the timeline would be useful in case I wish to make a 30 minute film, so that it could be placed there without having to drag anything. It may be that I am expecting software than can be tailor adjusted, each parameter to the desired level as in professional items and since this is a cheap consumer program it is not possible.
I bought Final Cut Pro for a lot of money (when it first appeared it was thousands and not just hundreds) but never used it since it was too complicated and tedious, but maybe there, this problem of screen wastage does not occurr, perhaps someone can advise! I could go back and reinstall it, but it was made for 10.2.8 and not 10.6.8 so it would not run on this macbook. I recently bought an old 15" TitaniumPowerbook (from 2005) and despite running at 1MHz the response time on it is "instantaneous" - amazing to not have the almost half second delay on many commands - graphics appear nearly immediately (just 5 milliseconds delay) and this makes working so much more enjoyable, not having the (350ms) stutter of 10.6.8 which we all get used to after our initial disappointment.
    Thanks for your help!

  • My pulldown menus and bookmarks have disappeared. How do I get them back?

Today, without doing anything to the browser, Firefox's pulldown menus and my bookmarks have all disappeared and I can't figure out how to get them back. I still have the icons for the basic tools, like the home page, but all the regular pulldowns, which I use frequently, are gone. Any ideas?
I have already downloaded the newest version of Firefox to see if this would work and it did not. Anybody?

If ALL your menus have disappeared, press F11 (you may have to hit the Fn key simultaneously). If only one or two of the menu bars have disappeared, hit F10 (again, Fn key may also be needed, depending on your settings). This will bring the menu bars back temporarily--until you click on something else on the screen. While they are showing, hit View/Toolbars and check whichever menu bars you wish to appear. Unless you have a deeper issue, this should fix the problem.
