How do I ensure OSX finds both Ext HD and Int HD on boot?

I have OSX 10.5.1 on both an Internal HD and External HD.
I prefer to use the External HD but sometimes it will startup on the Internal HD of its own accord.
I've tried going in Startup Disk and selecting External HD and then locking the padlock but the padlock doesn't stay locked, it's always undone the next time I go back into Startup Disk.
It seems it's failing to recognize the External HD on boot sometimes, because if I boot from ALT, then sometimes the Ext HD does not show up on the blue screen where it should - and from there I should be able to choose between the Ext HD and the Int HD - but when it's not there, I can't.
But if I then shut down, then disconnect and reconnect the Ext HD, then most times the Ext HD WILL appear on the blue screen when I boot from ALT and I then can choose it and that's fine.
But how do I fix it so both the Ext HD and the Int HD are found by the OS every time, like it used to?
This has only started recently, like in the last 2 days, after working fine for several months.

This can happen on my eMac running Panther, where the external fails to be immediately recognized sometimes. The system log reports a failed login or somesuch from memory. However, within a few moments it will appear. Usually opening a new Finder window will jog it to re poll for any external connections and then find it.
In your situation that delay will lose that opportunity for it to be available as a startup drive.
Once started and it is not showing, opening Disk Utility can often bring an external disk in to play, not that this solves your problem, just quicker than rebooting.
Whilst an eMac has no second hard drive bay, it is possible to sacrifice the optical drive and install a second internal drive in that compartment, thus having two physical hard drives on your Desktop. As I say, that sacrifice is losing your DVD drive, but you can attach it as an external drive if you don't use it much. This is a bit of a workaround but maybe something to mull over.
Tech note: access to the DVD is straight forward on an eMac (for an eMac). Access to its hard drive is so difficult it is not worth attempting.
So maybe a hardware solution of sorts, for what is I think possible a hardware problem with eMacs.

That is correct, I spoke with apple and they told me it's one or the other depending on which one you are actively using at the time. How do I find BOTH the raw and the cameras jpeg files?

I've got Aperture 3 importing raw plus jpegs from my Nikon D600 camera. The D600 produces amazing jpegs!
Aperture is set to use the raw file as the master.
I'd hoped that I'd have access to both the raw AND the camera jpeg but I only see the raw file and as soon as I open it, the cameras jpeg is replaced by something that aperture generates. It's quite frustrating because the jpegs from my Nikon look fantastic but only for a couple of seconds before aperture replaces them with a horrible, jpeg.
I want to have access to both the camera's jpeg and the raw file. Aperture's jpegs just aren't that good compared to the Nikon original jpegs. Not even close!
Is there any way that I can get back my Nikon camera's jpegs or are they gone, forever?

Not sure what you mean by this statement. By design Aperture doesn't "replace" anything. Can you clarify?

Using Numbers Personal Budget template I can't figure out how to change the categories in both tabs (budget and transactions)

Brand new just bought Numbers and I used the personal budget template to enter our monthly budget. I customized the spread sheet with our budget categories, but then when I go to the transactions tab to add our transactions, it only has the generic categories. How do I change them so that my transactions end up on the table?

There are 2 places to make changes.
I assume this is where you have already changed things:
The Budget tab- Summary by Category- just click the name and change it. Or else you dragged the "=" at the lower left to add rows. Added your categories.
You need to edit the popup in the Transactions tab- Category popup.
Popup menu is a data format. You find it on the right side bar Format>Cell>Data Format> Popup Menu. Change, delete, go wild. If you edit the first one you can copy it, select the rest of the column and paste. If you find you want an additional in a month or so you can enter it as text (after deleting the popup), then select it and the popup above and choose the popup format instead of multiple and you will have added it to that popup. You will need to fill it to the rest of the column.
If you added additional categories, you want to update the pie chart.
Click the pie chart, click "Edit Data References", drag the section to include your added categories.

How to keep entire photo library on ext drive and only slideshows on laptop

I recently did an erase/install upgrade to Tiger on my g4 powerbook laptop. My previous iPhoto 4 library is safely backed up on an external drive. I would like to keep the entire library on that drive and import new photos only to that drive and edit on that drive. I would like to have a second iPhoto library on my laptop that only contains slideshows that I have created on the external drive. I received mixed opinions at the genius bar: One guy told me that I would end up with a big mess and another guy told me it would be straightforward and easy.
So this is what I think I need to do:
1. Open iPhoto '08 on my powerbook (it wants to upgrade the library even though there is nothing currently in it. Is it OK to let it upgrade?)
2. Open it again while holding alt/option and ask it to create a new iPhoto library on the external drive (should I name it something unique?).
3. Drag my backed-up iPhoto library folder (its contents) into the new iPhoto library on the external drive (I imagine it will want to update them as well).
4. When I want to move a slideshow over to my laptop, export a copy of the slideshow to a laptop desktop folder (so it sends copies only) and then move them into my laptop iPhoto library (I have no idea whether the slideshow order and settings would be preserved).
I hope my thinking is right and would appreciate any comments or suggestions?
I am concerned that when I connect my camera to my laptop, it will want to open the laptop iPhoto library and import there instead of to the external drive library. How do I get the pics from my camera to the external drive library?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Regarding Step 3: do not import the old library into the new one. You'll get the modified files as regular files and lose your keywords, tiles, albums, slideshows, etc.
What I would do is put your full library on the external HD. Then create a new library on your PB. In the primary library create an album with the pictures you want for the sideshow. Then use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager tocopy that album from the external HD library to your PB library. Unfortunately you cannot copy over the slideshow settings or the music used. You'll have to have your iTunes library on the PB and set the slideshow settings once your have the photos on the PB.
The alternative is to export the slideshow as a QT file and copy that to the PB and run with QT player.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

How to prevent frozen video (in both clip previews and exported videos)?

When imported into iMovie, some video clips do not show preview information when you scroll over them. They simply do nothing and stay on a frozen frame. After exporting a project with one of these clips in the timeline, when the clip should clip the video freezes on that one frame while the audio plays until the clip is over. I have tried converting these videos into several other formats, codecs, resolutions, bit rates, etc, with no success. A video that freezes in iMovie, always freezes in iMovie (or freezes when exported) and I can't find any solution to make these clips play when assosated with iMovie.
The clips playback file before importing into iMovie.

I had a similar problem. For me it was because my memory was reaching it's limits, not the space on my harddrive. I closed all other programs to make sure iMovie has all the memory it needs and played/export the clips again and it worked.
Try downloading Memory Clean or another solution to see your current memory usage.
