How do I erase/Reformat a disk in a Mac Pro 3.1

Mac Pro 3.1
OS 10.9.4
Four 500 GB drives
Whenever I use iPhoto and File Maker together (Latest versions on both), I encounter starting problems the next day). I usually reboot from the Recovery drive and use First Aid. This is good for a couple of weeks.
This morning I could not start the system located in HD1, so I used the Recovery drive and I tried First Aid with no success.
I downloaded a new system (10.9.4) and installed it on HD4.
I tried again to repair HD1 and I got a message indicating that HD1 could not be repaired.
I can't isolate HD1 to reformat it probably because the older system (10.9.4) still there.
How do erase HD1? I am very grateful for any help you can assist me with.

Any version of Disk Utility will attempt to Repair any disk with any data on it, EXCEPT: You cannot Repair the Volume where the currently-running Mac OS X is located, since the repair might change data Mac OS X is actively using, and cause a loss of integrity or worse yet, a crash.
There is NO restriction of what Volumes can be Repaired based on Mac OS X versions. (Example: the Disk Utility on the 10.6 Installer/Utilities DVD can repair Volumes that have Mac OS X 10.9.4 installed on them.)
If Any version of Disk Utility tells you a Volume cannot be repaired, you should believe that assessment. What you should NOT do, especially on a Mac that supports multiple drives, is follow their recommendation to erase that drive to return it to bootabliity. That advice is based on the old assumption that the Drive (in working condition) is the prize. Today, drives are really cheap, and any of YOUR data (not the 350,000 files of Mac OS X) that can be recovered is much more valuable than a sub-US$100 drive.

How do I erase my hard disk to prepare for resale?

    Prepare Your Mac for Sale
Boot from the OS X Installer Disc One that came with the computer.  After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.  After DU loads select the startup volume from the left side list then click on the Erase tab.  Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) then click on the Options button.  Select the one pass Zero Data option and click on the OK button.  Then click on the Erase button.
Note: You can skip the Zero Data option if you are not concerned about removing sensitive personal data from the hard drive.  If you choose to skip this part of the process then it is possible for others to recover data from the hard drive.  The Zero Data procedure will prevent others from getting access to your personal information.
This process will take 30 minutes to several hours depending upon the size of the hard drive.  After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Now complete the OS X installation.  At the completion of the installation do not restart the computer.  Instead just shut it off.  The next user will be presented with the Setup Assistant when they turn on the computer just as it would if new out of the box.

  • How can I erase my hard disk with OS X 10.8.2?

How can I erase my hard disk with OS X 10.8.2?

If you want to erase the hard disk and reinstall OS X, follow these steps:
    1. Back up your data to an external disk if you don't want to lose everything. When you erase a hard disk, everything is deleted.
    2. Press Command and R keys while your Mac is starting to start into OS X Recovery, and open Disk Utility.
    3. Select Macintosh HD on the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the disk.
    4. After erasing the disk, close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X, so OS X will be installed with factory settings.
Don't forget to install iLife applications after the installation, if you need them. They come in the Applications DVD (if your Mac came with Snow Leopard or older), or open App Store > Purchases and download them

Hi, if tryly a PowerMac, (PPC instead of Intel), you may need a Firewire Drive to be bootable, most PPC Macs cannot boot OSX from a USB drive.
So we know more about it...

You put the internal drive in an enclosure. If you choose to keep the drive, you don't need to erase it.

  • How do I make a bootable hard drive clone of my main disk in my mac pro?

    Hi everyone,
How do I make a bootable hard drive clone of my main disk in my mac pro?
My main drive has bad sectors and I want to replace it.
    Thanks in advance

    Also your  Mac's Disk Utility can make a bootable clone;
    http://macs.about.com/od/backupsarchives/ss/diskbackup.htm
Consider though, if your internal HD is failing and defective, then any clone however made, may carry that defect.
Perhaps it would be better to copy your personal data, photos emails etc, to an external drive as well, just in case the clone did not work because of the failing hard drive.

  • How can I hook up 3 screens to a Mac Pro 8 core 2010 model?

How can I hook up 3 screens to a Mac Pro 8 core. One is a 23' Apple Cinema Display, the second is a 20" Apple cinema display and the 3rd is a 32' Sony Bravia HDTV (connected to mini port with mini/HDMI connector) Do I need to buy another video card? I have heard  about 4 different scenarios about this, and they all sound a bit complicated. I thought that you could automatically connect 3 displays with the card that comes with the MacPro. It has a DVI port and 2 mini ports, so it appears that would be for 3 displays. But this is where it gets strange. Any thoughts?

Which video card?  5x70?  If you read about the various scenarios thern for 5x70's you need two active adapters for thee monitors (TV considered a monitor).  And you should have seen references to these apple docs:
Mac Pro (Mid 2010), Mac Pro (Early 2009): Issues with three displays and multiple DVI, HDMI connections
Mac Pro (Early 2009), Mac Pro (Mid 2010): Supported display configurations
It's not really complicated.  Search out the appropriate adapters and hook 'em up.   For the 23" and 20", if they are DVI, you need single link adapters.  For the TV, if you end up using the DVI port for it (because possibly you can't find the appropate adapter cmbination) then you need to handle the audio separately since DVI doesn't carry audio.

it is however being recognized as an external hard drive
    any help , ideas ???

    Hi moon_junior;
Since your PB G4 is based on the PPC chip and the Mac Pro is based in the Intel chip, there is no way for the G4 to recognize the code on the Mac Pro startup disk.

  • How can i stream(air mirroring) *.mkv files between Mac Pro and AppleTV2 by using quicktimeX?

    Need support!

How can i stream(air mirroring) *.mkv files between Mac Pro and AppleTV2 by using quicktimeX?
As stated you can't. Even if the compressed data is TV compatible, the container is not. If the file is playback compatible with the QT X Player, you can, of course, play the file on your main system and "mirror" its display to the TV. Unfortunately, this normally means only the video is played back via the TV device. On the other hand, if you convert the MKV content to an TV compatible file (or move the compressed data to an TV compatible container if the data is already TV compatible), then you can mirror the QT X player (with audio) to the TV device in the full screen mode, air play/mirror it from iTunes (or any mobile device), or stream it directly from itunes.
Basically, what you can do here depends on the compressed data in the MKV file container and how you define "mirroring."

  • My question was how do you control bass and treble on your Mac pro? he act of the matter is you can't. Why don't they just say that rather than reading all of the ********

My question was how do you control bass and treble n a Mac Pro with the latest software.
    The answer is you can't
In summary why don't you say that upfront?
Instead of reading a bunch of crap that says nothing

just a suggestion: try soundflower or Audio Hijack Pro. I know with the 2nd one, you can control the bass, treble, and all that, with anything that makes sound, from itunes, to Safari, DVD player, Skype ( I guess) and other stuff. Worth the $, IMO, so in answer to your question  dbumgardner1, no, no you can't.  I suppose in that sense, Windows has us at a loss. We also need 2nd party stuff to play BluRay's, too. However, I haven't seen any Macintosh viruses (virii?) for a long long time....
    so, there's that....
