How do I exit the Mavericks death spiral?

Has anyone had Mavericks crash their laptop? We attempted to install Mavericks. Mavericks took away the old operating system and then failed to install itself, going into a continual death spiral where it just keeps trying to install. We have taken it to the apple store and they said it looked like a disk failure. But the computer had been fine up until the install. We have tried turning it into a transfer disk to remove files, but although it will go into firewire transfer mode, no other computers will recognize it as such. Help?!? Anyone had this problem?

With it in firewire target disc mode, try running disc utility on it and choose repair disc - see if there are errors.
If no other computer recognzes it, it does sound like a corrupted file system or bad disc in some way - that could be entirely coincidental to the timing of your attempted Mavericks install. Hard drives, often when they do fail, have a tendancy to go bad suddenly and without warning.
Hopefully, you had already been backing up that machine - the time to try to make backups is before unexpected disaster strikes, not afterwards.

Using a new iMac and Angry Birds froze up. How can I exit the app? Is there a command similar to CtrlAltDel or something to exit?

Select Force Quit... from the Apple menu. Sometimes you will have to click to another application to get the Apple menu to respond. This will bring up the Force Quit Applications window; stuck applications may appear in this list in red. You can then select the misbehaving application and click the Force Quit button. Occasionally you will have to dismiss this window and repeat the process to really get the app to quit, but this should be rare. If necessary, you can Force Quit multiple applications from this window.
Control-click/right-click on an application's icon in the Dock. Usually you can simply quit an application from this menu. A stuck application will often say Force Quit in place of Quit, though you can hold down the option key if it does not.

How can I get the Maverick's Calendar on Yosemite?

I'm a lawyer and I use the default OS X Calendar app extensively. I have Yosemite on my MacBook Air and dislike the Calendar app because it lost the "list view" that exists on the Day View in Mavericks' Calendar app. I've look at BusyCal and it is decent though not as polished as the OS X one.
For example: at 9 a.m. I might have 10 cases set. On Yosemite, you can not read any of the names or cases - only a few of the letters because the display shrinks it down on the "calendar" and you are unable to see them all at once. On Mavericks, you had this same view BUT on the side window, you had a list of all the events and you could read them perfectly.
I otherwise like Yosemite but the Calendar app is a deal breaker. Does anyone know how I can keep or add the Maverick's version of Calendar or mimic it's functionality to show all my appointments/events in a list?

Facts: Maverick's Calendar allowed multiple day entries/events to be reviewed at once without having to select each entry to find out what is on the calendar. This provides efficiency. Also, it's similar to what people have when they hit the little magnifying glass in iOS' calendar app. You see, many people actually have events in their life that are important and many times those events all happen in close proximity to each other.
And yes, no one twisted my arm when I became a beta tester for Yosemite. The whole point was to provide valid feedback to my chosen hardware and software supplier. You see, I have been using Macs since OS 6 - yes, 6. My hope is to improve the software to help people. The whole point of beta testing is to see what the current state of the application/OS is and how to better it.

You can't simply uninstall Mavericks. The easiest way to get back to your previous OS would be to revert back to your backup you did before you upgraded. If you didn't backup then you can only revert to an old OS by completely erasing your harddrive and then running an installer for the OS you want.

How do I exit the iMovie welcome screen?

I am trying to use iMovie, and I had a project started. Now whenever I try to open the project, the iMovie welcome screen appears, and I can't figure out how to get past it. It seems to be larger than my screen and won't move; there's no little red dot in the upper left-hand corner for me to exit it, and I can get my project to appear briefly, but then the welcome screen comes back. from any page you want to close just swipe up from the bottom of the screen and it will minimize the page. then tap the x in bottom right to close page.
from the front app screen page swipe right for the hub of all notifications.
swipe right again for the applications menu screen.
to get back to app front screen swipe up.

you can not restart an update downloaded via Software update. if you are not sure if it's installed you can check it in system preferences->software update.
also, you can manually download that update from apple website and reinstall it that way.

How do I exit a while loop which has a 'read from spreadsheet' pop up in it?

I have a while loop which calls 'read from spreadsheet'. My problem is that after entering a filename the loop repeats too quickly for me to hit the end loop button. How do I exit the loop without adding a delay after the read thereby slowing the loop when I don't want to exit. If I select cancel I get 'error 43'. Is there a way to to use an error handler to prevent this from popping up and use it to end the loop?

It's the error handler inside Read From Spreadsheet that creates the message. Specifically, one of the VIs called is Read Lines From File. The last VI in there is General Error Handler. You can delete it and save it with a different name. You should also modify it to return the error cluster. You'll also want to modify Read From Spreadsheet to return the error cluster so that you can trap the error in your VI. When cancel is selected, error code 43 is generated. Stop the loop when you see 43.

Once you get yourself back to Snow Leopard, if you still want to upgrade somewhat, I would suggest the following:
1. Get an external hard drive that you can use for experiments with new OS versions. You could partition it into 2 or 3 partitions. You could then clone your existing Snow Leopard system to one partition using Carbon Copy Cloner (well worth $40) or SuperDuper ($25).
2. Buy OS X Mountain Lion for $20, through the Apple online store (I don't think it's available through the App Store). Apple has decided to make it very difficult for anyone to get Mavericks unless they have already downloaded it.
You will receive two e-mails from Apple, one containing a PDF with a redemption code, and one with the password you will need to unlock the PDF. Using the code, you will download Mountain Lion from the App Store, where it will appear among your Purchased items.
After ML finishes downloading, its installer app will launch itself. When you see this launch screen, QUIT the install app immediately! Go to your applications folder, find the Install OS X Mountain Lion app, and copy it to a safe location outside of your Applications folder. Keeping one or more copies will allow you to reinstall without unnecessary aggravation if you later need or want to do that. At this point, you can re-launch the Installer in the Applications folder and let it run. You can install it on a clean partition on your external HD, or you can allow it to upgrade the Snow Leopard clone you created on your external drive, or you can do both. This should allow you to test how everything works for as long as you like.
3. If you left yourself a free partition on your test drive, try a clean install of Yosemite and set everything up from scratch (do not migrate anything). This will allow you to see whether your problems with it were related to something in your Snow Leopard system.

only from the first “hat” of Boy’s names; then draw the second card from the second “hat” of Girl’s names and repeat this process until all cards in both decks have been drawn. How do I get the TextBox (OR any
MsgBox) to display JUST ONE unique random card at a time so I can exit that deck and go to the next deck?
On my form, I have two TextBoxes (to display the names (as drawn), two buttons (to re-load each deck once exhausted) and one command (&End)control (to end the process). I created two ArraysLists
(to hold the Boys names and Girls names separately) and two ArrayLists to hold the cards for the random decks when created in code.
I can
NOT get this code to draw random UNIQUE names once I exit the deck. I have tried to ReDim the deck; randomly pull a card from the second (temp) deck, etc

Thank you for such a fast response. Sorry if my text wasn't clear. I'm really struggling with creating unique random elements in Collections in VB2010 and feel I understand ArrayLists better than some of the other Collection types.The code works perfectly
and generates unique random cards until the original deck is exhausted. Then it prompts the user to re-load the original deck so it can be reused if needed. But I need to draw one card only and exit the deck. Then when I click on the TextBox again, I want
that deck to be in the same random order - just minus any cards I have already drawn and thrown away. Thanks again for your help.

How do I retrieve the icons in the download map of my 2009 iMac with Maverick. They show up in the finder, but not when I open downloads from the dock.

I have a 2009 iMac running on Mavericks. Since a few days, when I open the Download Map from the dock, I only see "empty" icon symbols. When I leave the map open the icons re-appear after some 20 seconds. When I re-open the downloads, the icons are empty again.

bro I just had this issue its as simple as swiping to the right of each album artwork that does not display in the list view (On your Iphone.) Once you swipe to the right on every album that does not display in the list view you will see the delete option come up. Hit delete! Dont be scared. Do this with every album art that does not show up and then resync your Iphone. Go to the list view again and all of your missing album artwork will be displayed in both the list overview and close up landscape mode.
