How do I export or archive Mail mailboxes?

I used to be able to archive Mail email boxes and they'd have the name of the mail box and would be clearly an archive = I just tried to do so [running Lion] and what comes up is "com.apple.Mail.Backup" = with the icon of the 'old' Apple Backup program.  So, if I go to export [archive, backup or whatever] Mailbox 1 and then go to 2, then it won't have the right name and might get overwritten.
What do I do???  I need to archive or back up a whole bunch of emails and am concerned about losing them etc.

I don't know what was happening but yesterday I went back and did the Export/Archive function and it ended up doing just as I expected, exporting the mailbox as an mbox format =finally!!!  Not sure why it went haywire but all is fine now.

You can deactivate an email account in Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > the account > Account. Turn it OFF.

How can I add a "junk mail" mailbox, or any other mailbox to my email?

If you have an IMAP email account then you can create additional folders by logging into your email account on a browser and creating them there - they should then appear in the Mail. If you have a POP email account then you're stuck with the folders that you've got.

  • How do I add an archive Mail folder

The help file on organizing mail tells me to go to the mailbox screen and hit Edit.  There is no edit button on that screen.  I want to add a folder to save or archive mail messages as a local file, not take up room on the server.

Tap the back arrow that saysMailboxes until there is no back arrow just a title saying Mailboxes. You should see two sections under it, one that says Inboxes and another one that says Accounts. Under the Accounts you should see a list of your mail accounts (if you have more than one), select the account you want to add the folder to and it will take you to the lists of folders for that account. Inbox, Drafts, Trash... At the top you will see the Edit button that will allow you to add a folder.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then Mail/V2/Mailboxes

  • How can I upload existing Apple Mail mailboxes to IMAC .mac account?

Hi... I use Tiger Apple mail on a POP account elsewhere and want to move to .mac IMAC so I can synchronize mail and maiboxes across computers. I have created my mail account on .mac and that is working fine. But I have a large number of mailboxes sitting in Apple mail on my computer. How can I upload those to the .mac account? I had anticipated tha synchronization would take care of it, but it hasn't.
    Any advice apperciated

I have found the answer - in bottom of my mailbox list was a new entry representing the IMAP folders. I need to drag my old folders onto this and it synchronised - except that some ex-Eudora messages which had been edited in Eudora (oh hat we could do that in Mail) had not converted properly.

  • Exporting Emails from Mail Mailbox

With Mail, I have devoted a mailbox to several hundred emails rejected and returned from a mailing list. Within these several hundred emails, I would like to extract those addresses that proved to be invalid.
Is there some way in which I can export this mailbox to a program wherein I can then cull these addresses or what method I might use to do so?
    PLEASE and THANK YOU!

please don't put your email in the posts. that's against forum rules. what I suggested was to add all those bad addresses to a new group in address book.
select all emails in the mailbox with all those rejected addresses. then double-click on the "Add addresses" script in Mail scripts. it will offer to import all those addresses to a group in address book. that's all. from there you'll have to decide what you want to do with them.

  • How can I convert an ordinary Mail mailbox to a smart mailbox?

I have a large number of maiboxes all for the one account in Mail. I would like to get rid of them, preferably by changing them into smart mailboxes with the same criteria. The only way I can think of doing this is by deleting the mailboxes after moving the messages out of them then creating new smart mailboxes. That could take a very long time. Is there a way of doing this that is quicker and better? Apple Script? Automator? I don't know much about either of those, just that they exist and some programs have scripts that you can run. Grateful for assistance.

  • How do I export mac mail signatures?

Since migrating from Mobile Me to iCloud I have noticed that the signatures (of which I have a few) in Mac Mail do not sync to my other machines. My question is, how can I export my Mac Mail Signatures to another machine?

    Close Mail in both machines.
In the computer where your signatures are, go to your user library (in OS Lion this is hidden, but you may access it by holding down the option (alt) key while clicking on "go" then you will see the library item in the list. Another option to access it is to go to finder, click on "go", select "go to folder" and paste this: "~/Library"
Once you are there, go to Mail - > v2 -> MailData
You will find a folder called "Signatures". Copy this folder.
Go to the same locatin in the other machine. Make a backup copy of the "Signatures" folder and replace it with the other machine's folder.
Open Mail and check everything is running.
    Best

  • Exporting to Unix mail boxes and lots of other problems

The newer themailer gets the worse it gets. The mailer won't do moves successfully, won't get and save all xcontents all the time as it should, delays showing mail it gets, and on and on. I want to export all of my emails (100,000 or so of them) to Unix email formats so I can escape the crappy applicaiton and go back to elm or some other mailer. How do I export to Unix mail box format? Don't bother to tell me to drag and drop to the desktop. It does not do the translation!

To convert to mbox, emlxconvert says it will do the job.
I can't make head nor tail of the other problems you say you are having. (I happily used elm for 15 years before switching to Mail.app about 2 years ago, but now you couldn't pay me to go back.)

  • HT2486 How do I export a mailbox to address book from Mail

How do I export a mailbox to address book from mail?

Unless you are willing to continually do an export of one contacts database and import of the other, switching back and forth, you'll either need to use some third-party contacts application or maintain two separate user accounts in Mac OS X. The built-in Address Book/Contacts application does not allow multiple address books.

  • How can I "archive" mails in Mail App to another internal drive/partition to save space but still have it searchable in spotlight (and preferably visible, searchable, draggable in Mail App)?

How can I "archive" mails in Mail App to another internal drive/partition to save space but still have it searchable in spotlight (and preferably visible, searchable, draggable in Mail App)?
    Background:
I am using Mountain Lion and Mail App and running out of space on my small primary SSD drive (where I keep OS, apps, key user preferences/data and mail for speed). The mail data is the big variable (many GBs) and I want to "archive"/move some of the old mail to my 2nd drive inside the Mac. But I still want it searchable inside spotlight and preferably even inside Mail too. And I'd like to be able to still drag and drop old mails into this archive folder.
What I've tried that seems to work:
    This seemed to work:
    1. Move the archive folder/mailbox to the 2nd drive/partition/folder (don't delete anything inside Mail App)
    2. Create a symbolic link from its new location to the original/old location
This seems to work, it looks as "normal" and as if nothing happened inside Mail App but the folder now resides elsewhere and seems searchable etc. But I'm not sure that once caches refresh or over time with updates etc if stuff will break horribly or corrupt.
Is that the right way to "archive" mails in Mail App to another internal drive/partition to save space but still have it searchable in spotlight and visible, searchable, draggable in Mail App?
    Thanks in advance!
    Cheers,
    Daniel

I'm having a similar but slightly different problem. My company just migrated to Gmail, and it's saving mail drafts every 30 seconds into my Trash folder.
I unchecked the "Show in IMAP" preference in the Gmail settings, but my Drafts folder completely disappeared. I went back and checked it and the folder reappeared (with my drafts still in there).
I like the idea if starting an email on my laptop and having the option of finishing it on my iPhone or iPad, so only saving Drafts locally would not be ideal.
