How do I extend a network with an AirPort Extreme from an Arris TG862?

I'm using Comcast as my ISP, and after some issues with a previous Motorola modem, they supplied me with an Arris TG862 Router/Modem combo tower. I have two AirPort Extremes, one of which was previously connected to the old Motorola modem to send wireless into the house, but it only reached halfway, so I had the other AirPort Extreme in the middle of the house to "catch" the signal and then broadcast it out to the rest of the house. This worked fine for a while.
But with the new TG862, it doesn't seem to be an option. From what I've read, if I have the TG862 in one room (connected to the cable), AirPort Extreme #1 in the middle of the house, trying to join the existing network (or extend it?), and AirPort Extreme #2 in the far end of the house (to extend from AirPort #1), it won't work. Apple's "extension" technology isn't compatible with all other modems or routers, and even if it was, I'd have to somehow configure the TG862 to "allow to be extended."
So my question is, IF there is a desktop utilizing the TG862 as a direct connection (because it has no built-in Wi-Fi), is it possible to put the TG862 into bridge mode, connect one of the AirPort Extremes and have it act as the router so I can use AirPort Extreme #2 to extend that network out to the rest of the house? I want to ensure the desktop still has a connection, but there's Wi-Fi that actually goes out through the whole house.
The connected-to-the-cable-desktop is a PC; we have multiple iPhones, iPads, and anywhere from 1 Mac laptop to 1 iMac in the house at any given time.

You can absolutely extend a network with an Extreme. I've got a 5th gen. Extreme extending a network created with a 3rd gen. Time Capsule. On the Extreme, you'll have the option to allow (or not) WiFi clients. I recommend having all units updated to the current firmware (7.6.1 as of this writing). Note that extending doesn't work in daisy-chain fashion, meaning that your Expresses or Extremes will each connect to and extend from the TC. As such, you'll want the TC to be in as central a location as possible to offer the best coverage.

Hi Tesserax, I'd like to join this discussion. It seems Jasonbeyer didn't reply, but I have a question related to his.
I'd like to extend the wireless signal from my Cisco Model DPC/EPC2202 VoIP Cable Modem (802.11n) to the living room where, at the moment, it is non-existent. I assume there's inteference or the signal cannot reach through the concrete walls and rooms leading up from my bedroom to the living room.
My question is:
I'm thinking of extending my wi-fi signal by using the Airport Express and simultaneously using it to connect to my hi-fi to play iTunes from my bedroom's iMac.
Something's telling me it's not going to be that easy. I'm using an iMac (7,1) if that's any help or clue.
What are the things I should take note of and will Airport Express be compatible with my modem? Would I have to get TWO Aiport Express to bridge the signal to my living room?

We're doing a 3 room addition, and there is not a convenient place to put an Express in a wall outlet in the middle room of the addition, but there's a perfect place to put an Extreme on top of a piece of furniture.
So, can the Extreme act as an "extender" only, in lieu of using an Express?

Help! Im trying to extend the network on my Airport Extreme with an Express

This is probably such a begginers question but it has truely boggled my mind for the last 24 Hours!
I have brought an airport express to extend my airport extreme network. My Airport extreme is the base and is hooked up to my initial Home model from my ISP which works fine.
I have been trying to connect my airport express and am having no luck. I have plugged the airport in but am having no luck locating it on my airport utility (only my actual Airport Extreme shows)
Can someone please help me Ive been here for hours reading on forums trying to sort this out and Im gettin nowhere fast!
The light on the express is flashing orange. I have tried to reset it but there still is nothing showing.

I know at one point I was able to when I was on 10.4. Now that I am on an Intel processor and 10.8 I am going to have to upgrade some of my Apple wireless hardware.

How many devices can I use with an Airport Extreme Base Station? Devices included a mac, iphone, ipad and pc laptops.

The AirPort Extreme will support up to 50 wireless devices and 200 wired Ethernet devices. I would imagine that this would probably be adequate for most homes.

Extending a network with 2x Airport Express

I tried searching and couldn't find any discussions which answered my question. We have a home office which was just completed (an actual, separate structure, not just a room) and I need to connect it to the main house where our Internet connection comes in. What I'm trying to do is use an Airport Express (802.11n), which wirelessly connects to the main router, an Airport Extreme (802.11n, 2nd gen.). This Airport Express is then connected via Cat5e cable and a gigabit switch (it's a pretty long run) to another Airport Express (802.11n). This second Airport Express will then reconvert the connection to wireless and allow us to connect our devices in the office to the rest of the network and get access to the Internet.

However, no matter how I configure it, I cannot successfully get it to join the network properly. I've gone through the process multiple times, but am not having any luck. I've attempted to get it to "join my existing network" and then specify to connect via Ethernet and extend my network, and then tell it which device (the first Airport Extreme) it's connected to via Ethernet. Once I try to commit the changes, though, the device restarts and ends up with a blinking orange light, disappearing entirely from the list of devices in Airport Utility.
I've checked and the Airport Extreme is set up to allow devices to extend the network, and I've tried setting the first Airport Express to both "Join my wireless network" and "Extend my wireless network," though neither seems to make a difference.
Am I missing something, or trying something that won't work? Any ideas?

You have two choices with AirPort Express #1:
Configure the AX as a wireless Ethernet bridge. Apple calls this configuration a ProxySTA. In this configuration, the AX would join the wireless network provided by the AirPort Extreme, and then, share this connection out it Ethernet port to the Ethernet switch.
Configure the AX to extend the wireless network of the AirPort Extreme. This would also enable the base station's Ethernet port.
Of the two, I would recommend the first option.
To configure the AX as a ProxySTA, you need just to make the following two setting changes:
Wireless Mode = Join a wireless network
Allow Ethernet clients (enabled)
Both of these settings are on the Wireless tab in the AirPort Utility.

Setting up wireless network with 2x airport extreme ac

I've got a business customer with 2 new Airport Extreme 802.11 AC behind a comcast modem.
When the first extreme is set up, all is well.
When the 2nd Extreme is introduced, Airport Utility asks to automatically wirelessly extend the network, which I allow it to do.
But sometime during that setup, the 2nd extreme becomes unresponsive, and the connection to the internet becomes broken.
The only thing that restores it is to reboot the first Extreme. No matter how many times Iv'e done this, it results in the same problem. I've replaced Extreme #2 with a new one, and I get the same problem.
There are 20 some odd devices on the network; with one Extreme, it works great, and the Extreme AC's replaced 2 older version of Extreme's that were doing this just perfectly.
What is causing this problem, other than me doing something stupid, and how do I extend the network? I'd rather extend it with the wire it's connected to than wirelessly.

Power off AirPort Extreme 2 for now and test the Ethernet cable that is connected from one of the LAN <-> ports on Extreme 1 by temporarily connecting the cable to the Ethernet port on a laptop or desktop. Turn off the wireless off on the computer and see if you can get a good Internet connection that way.
If you can, then you know that the Ethernet port on the AirPort and the cable are both working correctly.
If you can't, then you need to do some troubleshooting to identify the real problem before you can attempt to configure AirPort Extreme 2.
Post back when you have verified that you have a working connection between AirPort Extreme 1 and the device that you are using to test.

Solution for Poor signal in a wireless WDS network with two Airport Extreme

I have just bought my second Airport Extreme to create a wireless network with the best possible signal. I have one Airport Extreme in my office and the second one (supposedly the remote base) in the living room, two brick walls and 7 meters away. I have follow Apple instructions for the setup, main base "Create a Wifi Network" and Extend network option selected. The remote "join an existent network" and Allow wifi clients selected. According to Apple this is a WDS network between two Airport Extreme.
The network is working and the signal from my iMac is very good in my Office. In the living room the signal with my PC laptop is also very good.
Problem is that my iPod Touch OS 3.0 (I use it as a remote control in my living room with a twonky media server) gets now a very weak wifi signal in my living room, in many cases I lose the wifi sgnal although I sit two meters away from the remote Airport Extreme in the Living Room. If I go to my office with the iPod, then I get a good signal.
I think that only the first Airport Extreme in my Office (Main Base) is emitting a wifi signal and the second Airport Extreme (remote) is only receiving the wifi signal not making a repetition of the wifi signal. (Sorry for my explanation, I am not technical on this.)
I thought that, in a WDS configuration, the remote Airport Extreme WAS suppose to also replicate the wifi signal in my living room.
I have also tried a WDS manual setup with the two airport with the same results.
Is there a solution for this?. Do I have to connect the two Airport Extreme with a wire ethernet in order to be able to have a wifi signal strong enough in my living room for my iPod Touch?.

I understand from your words that with a DHCP reservation I can force de Airport Extreme Main Base to assign an specific IP to a particular client in the network. Is that correct?. If that is the case, I will reserve the 10.0.1.3 to the Twonky Media Server (I need this to be fixed to this IP) and I will change the configuration of the remote Airport Extreme to DHCP automatic.
I will give it a try in a few days. I have spent so many hours with this set up that I am a bit terrified to start again today, to tired from work.
Just one last question. Setting up the remote Airport was very difficult with the Airport Utility. I had to reset and start many times as I always got two errors in the set up:
1.- Internet not connected.
After a minute or so, most of the time the problem was corrected automatically as the remote found the main base that is connected to the internet. I got a confirmation message for this.
2.- Second problem was that Airport Utility said that it could no connect the remote to the specified network. Sometimes (not always) the remote light turn green both in the Airport Extreme and in the Airport Utility, BUT I never got confirmation of a successful installation. Nevertheless, the connection was established because the wifi network exist.
Do I have to "disable the WAN port" during the installation of the remote Airport to avoid the problems?.

Can I extend the range with an Airport Extreme?

Hi there,
Is it possible to extend a wireless network's range with an Airport Extreme (just like you can do with an Airport Express)? Currently I have a Billion wireless modem/router but need to extend the range so I can use my PS3 in my bedroom. I would rather get an Airport Extreme instead of an Express so I can take it with me when I move out. Just need to know if the Extreme will do this as it doesn't mention it on the website.

The AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme, and even the Time Capsule can "extend a wireless network", +but... they are only compatible if you have another Apple router as the main device.+
Sorry, but none of the Apple products would be compatible to extend the range of your Billion wireless router using wireless only. You might want to check to see if Billion has a "range extender" or similar compatible device.

I've been wondering for a while how I could solve the weak signals that I get in the lower level of my house from my standard Verizon FiOs router. I have an Airport Extreme still lying around after it was taken out and replaced by the Verizon guys when they installed FiOs and I thought I might be able to put it to use downstairs. Is there any way I could put my Verizon router (which is directly connected to the fiber optic modem) and my Airport Extreme together to work in an extended network so that I could have strong signals in both levels of my house? Is it even possible? Any helps on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

I didn't really believe it until I added a remote base station and checked my network speed with http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/, with and without WDS.
As I understand it, 802.11n networks are not be affected in the same manner due to its ability to handle multiple data streams simultaneously.
If you want to extend your network without sacrificing bandwidth, you can certainly connect the base station Ethernet ports. That is not WDS; Apple calls it "extending a network". That's also how they do it in Apple's retail stores (at least when they used b/g AEBSs).

How can I extend a wireless network with my AirPort Extreme Base Station?

Today I purchased a brand new, dual-band base station to replace my Belkin N router, as I have had a handful of firewall, coverage, and other networking problems in my house lately. First off, I really like this router and it was very easy to setup. My MacBook Pro could use both bands and established a 300 Mbit/s link very quickly. After tweaking various settings to my liking, I was also able to maximize the connections on many of my non-Apple machines and devices. I noticed that the range of its network was better than my Belkin's, but unfortunately, it failed to completely saturate the area sufficiently. Since the Belkin still works well enough, I was hoping I could bridge them together one way or the other.
The Belkin router does not support any bridge mode that I know of, but the AirPort Extreme should be able to join a wireless network and then extend that over WiFi and Ethernet, correct? I would like to place them at opposite ends of my home so I can get strong WiFi signals everywhere inside. However, when I try to get the base station to connect to my preexisting WiFi connection, it tells me that I can't extend the network and fails to join.
So is this possible? And if it is, how would I go about setting it up? I know it would probably be easier if I had a simple range booster such as an AirPort Express, but I didn't buy one while I was at Fry's since I hoped I could make use of the older Belkin. This is its product page, if needed. Thanks for any suggestions.

Sorry, but no. The AirPort Extreme Base Station cannot "join" a network like the AirPort Express or Time Capsule, but you wouldn't want to do this anyway because in this configuration these devices will only perform as wireless clients ... not routers.
Instead, the AirPort Extreme can either be extended or can extend another 802.11g or 802.11n AirPort ... or a very very few non-AirPort devices.
One option for your Belkin would be to connect it to the AirPort Extreme by Ethernet but this may not meet your requirements or be a desirable situation. Otherwise, you would need to get another AirPort to extend your current one.

Extend wireless network with multiple airport express and netgear powerline

I currently have the following network configuration:
1. Using ATT u-verse (2-wire 3800HGV-B "modem") to internet
2. Disabled the u-verse modem wireless router, and have connected an Apple Time Capsule wireless router (on a DMZ)
3. Have four Netgear XAVB5001 powerline adapters connected to the time capsule (for our iMac desktops and the Apple TV)
4. Have an Airport Express wirelessly connected to the time capsule to extend range (for our iPhones and iPad)
All this is currently working. What I would like to do is the following, keeping 1-3 above the same:
4. Connect the airport express to the time capsule via Netgear XAVB5101 powerline adapter (instead of wirelessly connecting to the time capsule as it is today) and use it to extend the wireless range of the time capsule
5. Add ANOTHER airport express to the time capsule via powerline adapter (and extend the wireless range elsewhere in the house).
Does anyone have any experience with this kind of setup and can assure that it would work? (I'm trying to decide whether to spring for a couple more powerline adapters and another airport express)

I had a VERY similar problem: I was trying to extend my wireless network using a hardwired ethernet connection from Airport Extreme to my Time Capsule. Every time I plugged in the wire to the TC, everything disappeared. Unplugged, and boom. Came back.
Here's how I solved it:
Go into Airport Utility and select the unit you are trying to use as a wireless extender and choose to edit it. Then, on the wireless tab select CREATE a wireless network. But, give it the exact same name and password. This is completely counter-intuitive. You would think to choose EXTEND, but this would be wrong. Next choose the network tab. And, select Router mode to Bridge (off).
By choosing the same name and password, your phone, laptop, etc. will think it's on the same network and move seamlessly from one to the other.
See if this fixes your issue. Fixed mine instantly. AND, it only took 3 painstaking hours of checking ethernet connections and rewiring jacks, etc. to figure it out. LOL

How can i extend my network using an airport express

I have an airport express that connects wirelessly to an airport extreme. I would like to use it to extend my network. It has a strong signal coming in to it from my extreme. It works fine when I try to connect to the network, but it dies completely when I try to use it to extend my network. After going through a restart, it disappears from the network. The only way to bring it back to life is to unplug it, let it rest a few seconds, plut it in again, and then reset it to Connect to the Network before it crashes again.
I have a model of the express that is supposed to work with extending the network.

I would recommend that you configure your extended network by first placing the Express in the same room as the Extreme. Once the extended configuration is verified, you can take the Express to the desired location.
The key to extending a wireless network with decent overall bandwidth performance is the proper placement of the extending base station. Please check out the following AirPort User Tip for details.
