How do I feather one image into another?

I want to make the black area look as though it does not have a hard edge but actually fades into the lighter grey behind it, but in a way so that the fade still describes the shape of the black area. I also don't want any of the darker colour to bleed into white space - I want all the fading to be contained in the light grey.
For context, this image is a river in its current state (the black) and the light grey is the floodplain of the river. The effect I want is for the river to appear as though it moves within the floodplain rather than look like a fixed line on  a map.
Does anyone know if this is possible?

I ended up selecting the black river area, and making a new layer, and expanding the selection by 100pixels - filling that with a slightly lighter black, and then using the eraser with transparency to create the fading effect around the river.

How do I copy one image onto another image?

Lots of ways;  Use the Place command to place a file in another.  Open two files and drag one to the other's window tab, drag an image from bridge onto an open file.  Open an image, press ctrl/cmd-A to select all, the ctrl/com-C to copy the image, the ctrl/cmd-V to paste it into another image.

How do I super impose one image over another?

    Open image A
    Open image B
On image B, use one of the selection tools, e.g. selection brush, lasso tool, to select the object which you wish to "superimpose"
Go to Edit menu>copy to put the object on the clipboard
    Go back to image A
Go to Edit>paste. The object will be on its own layer
Get the move tool out of the toolbox, and position the object and resize, if indicated

  • How do I insert part of one image into another in Elements 8?

I am testing Elements 8 and would like to, for example, take an eagle from one image and insert it into another.  I've done this with other editing programs, but can't see how to do it here.  If one is to use layers, then I have another problem.  How does one open layers from more than one image in the palettes?

You can only view the layers of one image at a time. I believe E8's default setting is a maximized setting which allows for only one image in the workspace. If you change the setting in the menu to Cascade, you can have several images open in your workspace. I believe, that's under Window<Arrange.  The layer's palette will display whichever image is currently selected.
There are several ways to do it. Here are a couple...
    Copy/Paste...
One way is to select the eagle with a selection tool...magnetic lasso whatever...then copy the eagle into your clipboard. Edit<copy. (Shortcut = Ctrl + C on PC; Cmd + C on Mac).
Open the second image then paste. (Shortcut = on PC Ctrl + V; on Mac Cmd + V). This will add the eagle to the current image. Use the move tool to position the eagle.
    Drag/Drop...
Alternately, change window<Arrange in the menu bar to Cascade. This will allow you to have more than one image in your workspace.
Open both images. Select eagle with a selection tool. Once selected, switch to the move tool. Drag eagle into second image.
Alternately, you could also lift the eagle to it's own layer then drag it over using the move tool. Release the mouse button when you are over the second image to drop the eagle. (Shortcut to lift selected eagle from the background to it's own layer = on PC Ctrl + J; on Mac = Cmd + J.)
Note: Both images should be the same or close to same resolution. The image that is dragged will adjust (resize) to match the background image resolution. (Low resolution images dragged into high resolution images are tiny whereas high resolution images dragged into low resolution images would be huge).

  • How do I insert one file into another with track changes intact?

I gather that Pages does not have a way to insert a file into a document in the way that Word has insert file. So all we can do is copy an entire document and then paste it into the second document. But when I do that I lose the track changes, except for the odd comment. What is the way around this?

I'm assuming you're wanting to insert the contents of one Pages document into another. I don't have a need to use tracking, so I'm not sure if this applies but I think it should.
You can insert sections from one Pages document into another. Open your files & show thumbnails. Sections have a yellow border around all of the pages in that section. Now click on the page in the thumbnail pane & copy. If the file is more than one page & you only want one, you'll need to insert a section break to separate the pages. Then go to your other file, click in the thumbnail pane & paste. If you want to insert the other content into the middle of a section in the receiving document, you will need to insert section breaks at the point you want to insert. The whole copied page will be pasted in. Repeat with another section. Styles will copy over with the sections but headers & footers will not.

You could copy and paste pages from one document to another in Pages '09, but Apple removed this from Pages 5.
Best you can do is copy the content.

  • How to copy from one image to another

Hi, I'm struggling with the most basic process in PSE 10. I have selected an area in a photograph - now I want to delete the rest of that photograph and add the selected area as a layer to another photograph. Having spent hours searching online, I'm hoping someone can give me an answer please.

Hi Barbara, I can't explain this but it seems to be working now, even with the Tiff format.  I'm doing exactly what I was doing before - selecting an area on the photo, then pressing edit - copy.  Before I was getting an error message, but now I can copy the selection into another Tiff.  I must be doing something different or I must have changed a setting - I have no idea what, but the problem seems to have gone away. If only every problem was that simple!
The upshot is I can now edit in both Tiff and PSD and am really delighted with the help I received from this forum.  I know they were very basic questions, but sometimes those are the hardest to answer.
Many thanks to everyone who responded, John

  • How do you replace one image with another

I have a page that displays the results of a search for information about a club. One of the items is the club's logo. It is displayed using the following code
    <img src="<?php echo $row_clubedit['club_logo_url']; ?>" alt="The Club's Logo"  class="logo" title="The Club's Logo">
This works fine, except when no club has been selected, in which case it shows the default question mark in a blue box.
It would be nice if I could display the Federation Logo, to which all the clubs belong, until a club is picked.
Is there a simple way to set a default image that would be replaced from a data set.
$row_clubedit['club_logo_url'] holds the url to the log in the format http://www.club.org/clublogo.png
    <img src="<?php echo ( 'federation_logo_url'); ?>" alt="The Club's Logo"  class="logo" title="The Club'c Logo">
The logic I suppose would be
    if club_logo_url does not exist,
              then print the  federation logo,
         else print the club logo.
How do you code that in php?
I'm only a beginner at PHP.

    <img src="<?php echo $row_clubedit['club_logo_url'] == "" ? "http://www.club.org/clublogo.png" : $row_clubedit['club_logo_url']; ?>" alt="The Club's Logo"  class="logo" title="The Club's Logo">
    should do it

That is a common capability of DJ programs, but cannot be done with iTunes.

  • How to clone one part of an image into another

Is it possible in Aperture to clone one part of an image into another or as in windows fuse the photos together?
    Thanks

This points directly to the difference between a digital image conversion and development program, and a graphics program.
Development programs' tools adjust the color and luminance information in each pixel.  They do not (mostly) add any information to the pixels or to the image.
Graphics programs are built around adding information to images (or blank canvases).  Rectangles, circles, text, other images -- these are all graphics elements which are combined to make a new image.
Aperture is the former (and also a superb digital asset manager).
    The generalized workflow is this:
Capture information using a digital camera
Optimize that information (make the picture as good as possible) using an image development program
Combine pictures and graphics elements to make new graphics using a graphics program
There are many excellent graphics programs.  Photoshop is the best known and most used.

  • How do I copy layers from one image to another?

I am editing figures for a journal and I need arrows for multiple images.  Is there a standard arrow?  I can only see free hand.  If I use a free hand arrow I then want to copy it to the other images for consistency.  How do I copy or share layers between images?

There are many arrows in the shape tool, or you can set the line tool to have an arrowhead in the tool options. You can copy/paste layers from one image to another, or drag a layer from the layers panel into the main image window of another image and then use the move tool to position it. You can also drag into the thumbnail in the photo bin, but you'll still need to bring the image up to adjust the positioning.
