How do I figure out if my hdd is broken or what else happened

Hi there,
last thursday I turned on my computer, started k3b to burn a data dvd (on a dvd+rw), started kaffeine to watch tv (dvb-t) while the dvd was being burned and I ran pacman -Syu.
Then kaffeine was behaving weirdly, it was only playing tv for a few seconds and then the picture and sound was gone, then I saw that the cpu usage on one core was pretty much contuniously up at 100percent. k3b did not respond either (and it wasn't drawn on the screen correctly anymore either, it was only a solid grey box). When I checked what pacman was doing I realized that pacman had aborted itself because it couldn't remove the db.lck. So I wanted to remove it, but 'rm -i /var/lib/pacman/db.lck' as root returned, that /var was mounted as read only. After that the computer became completely unusable, I wasn't able to run any command, not even 'halt' worked so I had to turn my computer off by pulling the cord basically.
What the hell was going on with my computer there? I'm running arch on my computer for a couple of years now, I didn't change anything recently, though it's been years since the last time I burned a cd/dvd. Thinking back I believe I heard my hdd spin down at some point.
Anyhow, tomorrow I'll go back home (last thursday when all that happened I just wanted to burn that dvd real quick before I left for vacation over new years), but what should I do? Should I boot from a different medium and try to see if sdparm reports any errors for that drive? That would mean, the hdd would be powered up for a few minutes because hdds can't be hotplugged (or can they?). In case there would be something wrong with my hdd, can that already have negative effects (ie destroy data)?
Alright, how do I proceed? If you need any more information, let me know.

Alright, thanks for the replies. I booted a live cd, ran smartctl on my hdd and because it passed the overall-health self-assessment I mounted my /var partition and copied /var/log onto a flash drive. Here's my errors.log, these ata messages were the only entries I could find in all my logfiles that look like error message: http://pastebin.ca/2037703
Does that mean the kernel lost connection to the hdd?
How do I narrow it down to either a hardware or software issue that caused this? I mean, smartmontools tell me the hdd is working fine (those 'pre-fail's sound scary, but the values are pretty far away from the threshold, so I guess it's fine) but I don't want to just plug my hdd back in, boot from it and see what happens. I'd like to know what caused this.
Well here's what smartctl -a said to my hdd: http://pastebin.ca/2037720
Here's /var/log/everything.log: http://no-paste.ch/index.php?show=187
Let me know if you need more information.

I uninstalled and reinstalled but the program still won't open.  I was trying to download an mp3 file last evening.  Instead the site tried to install a new audio player.  I did not want it so uninstalled it immediately.  I think in that process something was deleted that I need for iTunes but I do not know what.  How do i figure out what is gone and recover it?
I did try a system restore - but that was not a fix either.

Ackk ... that behavior is consistent with the play_mp3.exe trojan:

Try downloading and installing the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware. Update your MBAM definitions and then run a full scan of the PC. (Takes about 2 hour on my Lenovo.)

Does the scan find any infections? If so, please paste the contents of the log file for the scan in a reply here so we can have a look.

I have an IPad with a Restriction code that we cannot remember.  Is it possible to delete and restore the IPad without the code.  If not how do I figure out the code or how to remove it?

The only option is to wipe the device clean and restore it to factory settings.  Hope you have a backup.
Follow the instructions in  iOS: How to back up your data and set up your device as a new device http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137 to restore the device to factory settings.
Once you have setup the device as a new one, you can then sync it back with your iTunes account and all your music, apps, contacts and any other content sync'ed with iTunes will be loaded on the device. Any content that is stored only on the device and not sync'ed with iTunes, like app logins or data, will be lost during this process. Be forewarned that this is a long process and can take a couple of hours or more to complete. This can be painful, but it is necessarily so to prevent users from working around the security settings. After the restore is complete, you can setup a new Restrictions passcode. Make a note of the passcode to avoid this situation in future.
     Cheers, Tom

how do I figure out if I have usb 3.0?  I am trying to buy compatible external hard drive (western digital my passport for mac) and I can not figure out if it will work with my mac book.

Dont buy a Western Digital, get a Hitachi or Seagate (Toshiba is made by Hitachi). These are the most reliable, and the HD used inside Macs.
ALL HD can be made compatible with your MAC (including a WD if you already bought same), ......they just need to be formatted for the Mac platform, format them in Disk Utility as Mac OSX extended journaled.

  • I'm trying to install OEM SR 2.1: Windows 95B in Qemu...  How do I figure out which brand of CD-ROM drive Qemu emulates since I have three different drive specific boot disks...?

I'm trying to install OEM SR 2.1: Windows 95B in Qemu...  How do I figure out which brand of CD-ROM drive Qemu emulates since I have three different drive specific boot disks...?

Not exactly...; all MS produced Win9X/ME install CDs are ISO-9660 & maybe even Joliet too...  The really confusing part is that not all Windows 98 SE full install CDs are even bootable in the first place (they tend to only ship one if the PC is capable of booting directly from its optical drive...; the vast majority of PCs have to use the chain loading method due to buggy, poorly written, outdated BIOSes...; etc.).  OEM SR 2.1/Windows 95B is really quite special & innovative for its time in that it was the first Service Release of Windows 95 to support larger HDs via FAT32 which back then was still brand new: i.e.: exciting technology & it still has proven to be quite useful & versatile since most flash memory storage devices come pre-formatted FAT32.
There's also a hidden X:\Usbsupp folder on the CD that contains the MS USB 1.1 supplement patches/upgrader: a common mis-nomer is that you don't need to install it unless your PC has USB 1.1 ports.  Even without USB 1.1 ports the upgrades to C:\Windows\system make it a lot less buggy, more secure & stable.  For anyone else that enjoys emulating OEM SR 2.1 there's also a great unofficial SP 1 for it which has so many useful patches in it I'm considering integrating it into all of my install CDs...
Unfortunately I've found that getting it to run decently requires tracking down a bevy of essential but according to MS's not releasing them in patch form optional DLL upgrades...  I guess not all machines are that unreliable but better to have them...; just in case you encounter a PC with a buggy BIOS that has hardware coniptions and/or ACPI/APM bugs.
