How do I "fill down" in Numbers 3.5?

Hi all,
I'm trying to use Numbers 3.5 instead of Excel file for my work, and I need to put in a lot of number in sequence, ex: 1,2,3,4,5,..........
In excel, there is a easy way just to click on the column right end with alternate key and pull down until the last number I want, but I couldn't do it in Numbers 3.5, anyone can help please?
Thanks

Hi Jul,
With a number series, you need to give Numbers a hint about the steps. Other series seem to "just work".

Drag the Fill Handle down
With a number series, select the first two cells
And drag down.
You can also drag up

  • How can I fill down with this formula

=IF((D2>0, C2-D2, G2) but I want G2 to remain for each cell, I only want the true condition to change. So cell E3's formula would be =IF((D3>0, C3-D3, G2) and so on.
    Thanks

    GE,
You might enjoy reading Chapter 6 of the Numbers User Guide PDF. You can download it from the Help menu.
On page 129 there is a section titled Distinguishing Absolute and Relative Cell References that addresses your situation. The dollar sign signifies the column or row in the formula as being Absolute (vs. Relative). Absolute references don't update when you Fill or Copy/Paste.

  • Fill Down Question

I understand how to use "Fill down" when all fields are on the same row.
    A1-B1, D1-E1 etc.
But When there is a constant as in the formula A1-A4, A1-A5, A1-A6 etc How do I get the fill down to work without changing the A1. (I surely would not like to have to manually enter the formula for over 200 lines)
    Thanks

    Yes, That did the trick.
    Thank you very much.

  • How can I make fill down command NOT increment values?

    Hi,
Is there anyway I can get the fill down command to insert the same value in each cell, rather than filling in an increasing series. It works fine for plain numbers (i.e. if I fill down from a cell containing "1", it gives a column with every cell containing "1").
However, for dates and mixtures of text and numbers it always increments the values - example below:
Doing fill down from cells containing:
    1 18 Mar 2009 abc100
    Gives:
    1 18 Mar 2009 abc100
    1 19 Mar 2009 abc101
    1 20 Mar 2009 abc102
    1 21 Mar 2009 abc103
    1 22 Mar 2009 abc104
    1 23 Mar 2009 abc105
    etc...
How can I keep the dates and "abc100" the same in the filled cells?
    Thanks for any help!
    Jo

I have no idea how the designers of Numbers determined when to fill down identical values versus incrementing the values. For instance, "abc100" increments in a fill down while "100" and "abc" do not. I, personally, see nothing special about "abc100" that indicates a pattern.
And you are correct that Fill Down is different than dragging the circle. Fill down takes whatever is in the top cell and fills down (either incrementing or not, depending on whatever the rule is the designers chose) while overwriting whatever was in the lower cells. Dragging the circle of a box that covers 2 or more cells fills down from the bottom of the box and it looks for patterns, not just simple increments.
No problem on the search. It isn't always easy to find what you are looking for. I just happened to remember that thread.

  • I am trying to fill in a form in adobe exportpdf. How can I fill in numbers and symbols? Parenthesis, dollar sign etc.

I am trying to fill in a form in adobe exportpdf. How can I fill in numbers and symbols? Parenthesis, dollar sign etc.

    Hi;
Can you provide a little more detail, maybe a screenshot?  ExportPDF only converts PDFs to other file types, what exactly are you using to try to fill out the form?  The two Adobe form filling tools I would recommend would be:
    1) Adobe Reader - a free download you can install on your computer and can be used to fill out most any form.  For numbers, symbols etc it can depend on the field you are entering data into, some fields have restrictions, but you would use those keys on your keyboard, if nothing is entered then that field probably has restrictions.
    2) Adobe Fill & Sign: https://cloud.acrobat.com/fillsign - using the Fill & Sign tab on the acrobat.com website you can fill out most PDFs.  To enter numbers, symbols, etc you would simply add them using your keyboard.
    Thanks,
    Josh

I agree, I also miss ⌘ D from AppleWorks. Still another thing to leave feedback to the Numbers team about.

  • How can I track down what is filling my HD but clears with a restart?

Recently started seeing 12GB of free disk space slowly filling over the day and I'm uncertain how best to track down and remove the cause.  Towards the end of the day, I see the "startup disk almost full" error and my computer comes to a crawl.  A restart rescues the space, so I'm guessing /tmp or swap?
Anyone have suggestions on starting to track down the problem?  Thanks.

I'd consider using an external drive (flash or mass storage) for the files you use less often to free up disk space. You have a lot of inactive memory and your swap is around 2GB so you aren't too bad there. Obviously launching iPhoto might cause some swapping as well as iTunes.
Was this screenshot with iTunes/iPhoto opened or closed?

  • Numbers Fill Down Scrolling  Slow in Numbers

    Hi,
Compared to OpenOffice, Scrolling in Numbers is painfull Slow when Fill Down is selected.
Numbers seems to be the only app affected.
Is there a way of speeding up this Magic Mouse Scrolling?
    Regards,

One of the reason for this slowdown is that Numbers recalculates the whole table when any change is made to the table. Filling a formula into a new row is a change to the table.
If you are filling into several cells, you will find it quicker to:
Enter the formula into the top cell of the column to be filled. Copy.
Select all cells to receive the formula (including the one where it has been entered)
    Paste.
    OR
Enter the formula in the top cell.
Select all cells to receive the fomrula (including the top cell).
Go Insert > Fill > Fill Down.

  • How to delete repeated text in Numbers

I have a long list of names, many of which are repeats. Is there a command that deletes any repeated phrases in Numbers?
    Thanks.

    Hi Koenig--
OK, finally, I figured it out! Thank you!
Here are the steps I took:
    1. Put my list of names in Column A.
    2. In Column B, on cell B2 (not B1--which is the mistake I was making prior), I pasted the code you suggested: =IF(A=A1,"duplicate","")
    3. Then, I filled the entire column B with the formula. I made the mistake several times of just selecting the entire column from the top. That's wrong. What you need to do is select B2, the scroll all the way down and while holding shift, select the bottom B cell--only then click go the insert>fill>fill down. This fills every repeat with the word "duplicate" next to it. In my case, everytime there was a repeat in column A, column B would have the word "repeat" next to it.
    4. Then I sorted column B by descending. This grouped all of the "repeats" at the bottom. I deleted all of those rows.
    This worked for me.
What I don't understand is how or why you'd use the "paste values"? What's this about?
Thanks Koenig. It took me lots of trial and error, but I got it.

In cell A1 enter "31311", in cell A2 enter "31312" select A1 and A2, grab the little circle at the bottom-right of the selection and grad down to fill.
If you want to fill on expanding the table I would do something like:
    A1=31311+row()-1
then select A1 and fill down as described above
