How do I "find" a shared hard drive with Vista?

I have the newest Airport Extreme set up in my home with an external HD attached to it via USB. The Macs in my network (both wired and wireless) can "see" the Extreme and thus access the contents of the HD attached to it.
However, my wife's wireless PC running Vista needs to access the HD as well. How does one "find" it? When she goes to Network and "map network," as well as "find all devices on network," the Extreme does not come up. What else needs to be done to get access?

According to www.apple.com/airportextreme/specs.html, to access the drive you need "... Windows Vista (SP1); Bonjour for Windows (included on AirPort Extreme CD)".

  • How do I connect my external hard drive with all of my digital media to my Apple TV network and make it accessable 24/7?

How do I connect my external hard drive with all of my digital media to my Apple TV network and make it accessable 24/7?  I have the latest Apple TV, ipads, iPhones as well as a solid HP Windows machine all on my home network.  Is there a way that I can connect my hard drive to my receiver or Apple TV directly so that the digital media is available on my network 24/7 rather than have it connected to my computer and available through Home Share which never works anyway??

Sorry it's all done through iTunes.

How can I completely wipe the hard drive with out the Mac OS X disc? I don't need any of the info on the computer.

You can't unless you have a bootable system on an external drive you can use. Otherwise, you need either the original disc that came with your computer or a retail copy of Snow Leopard DVD. The latter contains 10.6.3, so your model must be capable of booting from that or an earlier version of OS X.
You can purchase replacement discs from Apple:
Apple Store Customer Service at 1-800-676-2775 or visit online Help for more information.
To contact product and tech support: Apple - Support - Contact Apple Support.
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.

  • How can I partition an external hard drive with data in it? When I select the drive, the partition option is grayed out.

I am having a problem partitioning an external hard drive with data in it.
When I select the partition, everything is grayed out.  I can't add a a partition for some reason.  When I asked this question to other people, they told me to select my partition "io" to do it from there.
As you can see, I can't seem to partition it form there either.  I ran the Verify Disk utility but the volume came out okay.
Any ideas as to what the problem would be?
    Thanks!
    Luis

Select the main hard drive entry (topmost one.) Click on the Partition tab. Shrink the existing partition by grabbing the sizing gadget in the bottom right corner and pushing up until you free up enough space for your second partition. Be sure you do not shrink to less than the space currently occupied by your files. Click on the Add[+] button to create a new partition in the free space. Click on the Apply button and wait until the partitioning is completed.

assuming the drive is formatted for Mac, open a finder window and click once on the icon of the extreme under shared. once connected (you may have to enter your admin password), you will see the drive represented by a folder icon. click on it once and it should mount on your desktop.

  • How do I find my external hard drive capacity?

I've just bought a Brand New Western Digital 1TB My Book Pro Hard Drive.
However, now that it's hooked up when I look at it 'Get Info' it tells me the following
    Capacity 465.75 GB
    Avaliable 421.57 GB
    Used 44.18 GB
This doesn't look right to me - How can I verify the Hard Drive I've bought actually has 1TB of space?

    Hi,
looks to me that the two HDs inside your 1TB are setup as a mirrored RAID, so that the actual size is 500GB (whic actual is 488GB).
Together with the drive you should have a CD where you can find some sort maintenance application.
Have a look inside the manual for the Drive at how to change it from a 'mirrored 500GB' to a 1GB Drive.
    regards

  • How do I locate a shared hard drive on my personal wireless network?

I would like to access a drive that my husband and I share over our wireless network. However, I am not sure how to prompt my Macbook Pro to look for the drive. In 'Finder' the shared drive doesn't show up under my available devices, even though I know it is available and accessible.
I am used to working on a PC, and would know how to locate it there...but even after several months, I am slightly Mac-challenged.

On the top toolbar on the mac desktop. Click go -> server. A dialog box will pop up. Type in the path directory to the computer/shared drive. i.e for my mac to access my server in the path type in smb:\\shane-pc\e\. SMB is a protocol for MAC to utilize windows drives other the network. So you must put smb at the beginning of the path. So, smb:\\ (computer name) \ (drive letter or folder name) \. Let me know if you need help figuring this out.

Hey guys, so I have a MacBook that is running IOS X 10.6.8 and is a 2006. I have been wondering how to check your hard drive space since I bought it on Craigslist. I just want to verify how much space this thing has. And also, since i'm 15 i'm looking to save some moey on a new battery and was wodering if anyone can guide me through buying a new one on eBay. To see how much room you have on your hard drive right click (Control key + Click) and select Get Info from the drop down menu.and check Available.
If you have an Early 2006 White or Black plastic MacBook with the removable battery you can get a new third party battery fairly cheap on eBay. Every MacBook from 2006 through Mid 2009 except the Late 2008 Aluminum Unibody use the same battery.

  • How do I find my external hard drive and move files?

Im totally a non tech person so please bear with me. I have had my imac for several years. I started getting a message every time I went to do anything saying that I didnt have the space available to do whatever I was trying to do. I finally bought a 2tb external hard drive. It didnt come with instructions or anything so all I did was plug it in. The computer seemed to recognize it and something having to do with timemachine came up and I just clicked yes and it did its thing for about 2 hours and it was done. I didnt get the message about the available space again so I assumed that corrected it. Well today when I went to update my software its telling me I dont have the space available for the update. I have no idea what is going on. I dont even see an icon on my desktop for the hard drive, just timemachine. What am I doing wrong?

AS you drag files to an external drive, a little Plus sign + will appear to indicate the files will be copied.
You need to delete some files ASAP.  Best to have greater than 2gig of free space.  Many posters to these forums state that you need much more free space: 5 gig to 10 gig or 10 percent of you hd size.

Be careful when deleting files. A lot of people have trashed their system when deleting things. Place things in trash. Reboot & run your applications. Empty trash.
Go after large files that you have created & know what they are.  Do not delete small files that are in a folder you do not know what the folder is for. Anything that is less than a megabyte is a small file these days.

Monolingual is a program for removing unnecessary language resources from Mac OS X,in order to reclaim several hundred megabytes of disk space. It requires at least Mac OS X 10.3.9 (Panther) and also works on Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger). It worked for me on 10.4

  • HT4437 How do I find my external hard drives that a connected to my Airport extreme with my apple tv?

Hi I am trying to set up our house to be fully networked. We have an airport extreame the network is up and running all the Apple TVs can show photos and music from the ipads and iphones. I can't reach to the external heard drives with the apple tv is it possible to do this? How??
We can't see the printer I connected to the Airport either will it work if I am running it through a hub instead of as the only connection to that USB port?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
    Bruce

Welcome tot he Apple Support Communities
The Apple TV can only get data from the iTunes library and the iTunes Store, so you can't use an external hard disk with it.
Where are you trying to see the connected printer?

  • How can I use my external hard drive with my new (firewire-less) MacBook?

I read in another post that the available firewire adapters don't work for external hard drives. So how can I get my music, etc. off my external hard drive and onto my new computer?

Like the second or third one in this picture?
    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f4/USBtypes2.jpg
They are USB ports - the smaller one is a mini-USB (like you might find on a digital camera) and the third is a USB-B port (such as on a printer). You can use a mini or standard USB cable (depending on the port) to connect it to your Macbook.

  • How do I share an external hard drive with 3 macs

On my gmac, I have an external hard drive that all my itunes music/videos are being saved to. I would like to give the other macs access to the itunes music but can not seem to network it. I have no problem logging on to any of the three computers and sharing/using folders from each mac but I can not get the other two computers to see my external hard drive. I tried using SharePoints but the issue seems to be that the external hard drive shows up at the "computer" level, whereas the networking shows up at the internal hard drive level. I've searched all over the boards but can't seem to find anything that helps me with this particular situation. I am using a SeaGate external hard drive that is formated as FAT32.

Highlight the Share in Sharepoints>Normal Shares tab. Look down & right for the Windows (SMB) sharing and change it Shared(+). Click Update Share, Share should now show a + under SMB & AFS. Click the Little Show File System Properties button, set users & group, Permission, etc.,Update Share.
    That's the basics.

  • How to move files from old hard drive with SATA dock?

I just upgraded my hard drive and now need to transfer the data from the old hard drive to the new.  I was told to use a SATA dock but I am not quite sure how to use one.  I thought it best to either find out how to use one or find out if there is a better way rather than going about it on my own.  How do I solve this quandry?

Click on advanced, and click on both

  • How do I use an external hard drive with iMovie 10.0.1? I have run out of disk space on my Macbook Air.

How do I use an external drive with iMovie 10.0.1?  It is not obvious and I have run out of space.

If you want to move a complete iMovie 10 library (file with .imovielibrary extension) click on the library in the libraries pane and select  File - Consolidate Library Media.  This ensures that all media is copied to the library.  You can then move the library onto your external drive using Finder.  The first time to want to access it from iMovie you will have to tell it where it is by choosing  File - Open Library -Other and navigating to it.
If you only want to transfer part of a library to another drive, create a new library a at the desired location  File - Open Library - New  and copy projects and events to it from within iMovie.
Its all described in iMovie help - "Work with multiple libraries".
    Geoff.
