  • HT201250 how do i add external hard drive to my time machine back up

how do i add external hard drive to my time machine back up so that I may view the files independently on apple tv please?

To elaborate on above.  I am looking to add about 300gig of photos on an external hard drive to TC.
Once I do this I believe I can then have itunes source its photos from TC without having them stored directly on my iMac?
Then I am assuming once I keep itunes on with home sharing I can stream these photos through Apple TV?
My inital problem is getting the photos onto TC in an individual folder not just a backup folder....is that possible or what would you suggest please?

  • Find an Iweb project on a time machine back up

    Hi
Following a complete new reinstall of 10.5.7.,
I try to find my Iweb project in a Time Machine back up but I can't.
The migration assistant doesn't allow to see any aplications.
    Can you help me ?
    Merci d'avance

Go into your back up, your iWeb project will probably be:
    'Backup_path*/Users/*your_username/Library/Application Support/iWeb/Domain'
assuming you don't already have a current Project in your new OSX installation (in which case make a copy of it), you can copy the 'Domain' file to:
    /Users/yourusername/Library/Application Support/iWeb/Domain
which can then be opened in iWeb.

  • How do I retrieve my iphoto library from the Time Machine back-up drive, when the original iphoto library was on a separate external hard drive that has crashed?

I recently backed up my iMAC and Simpletech external hard-drive to a 1 TB WD Passport  external hard drive, using Time Machine's back-up utility.  Today, I tried to access my iphoto library from the back-up drive, but received a message saying "the iPhoto library is a Time Machine back up, and so cannot be used as the main library.  Relaunch iPHoto with options key held down to choose another library."  Since my Simpletech died on me, what other iPhoto library is it expecting me to access?  I know approximately 169 GB were backed up, and my iPhoto library is roughly 54 GB.

Thanks.  I will try going through TM.  Since my Simpletech is on the way out, I'll be plugging in a new external hard drive (other than the back-up drive) and trying to restore the library to the new drive.  Any advice or warning if this is NOT the right thing to do?
Meanwhile, that is a great tip to do an alternate back-up using a different means.  It's been tough to figure out how to "preserve access" to digital images and files for posterity, knowing the hardware will always fail/obsolesce sooner or later, and that "clouds" are only as good as their consistent and reliable accessibility.  Upping the odds with redundancy will help dull the edge of my "access anxiety", though logically, it can never relieve it.  Will look into

  • I have no folder for firefox in application support... where can I find the stored passwords from my time machine back up!!?

Everywhere I look it says I should have a folder for Firefox in library/applicationsupport/ BUT I don't have one! I'm looking to restore passwords from a time machine back up but there's no Firefox folder so I don't where to look. I even did a fresh install of Firefox on my mac and even then it never created a Firefox folder in library/applicationsupport/... they must be store somewhere in my back up...!?

Hello kamilr, check also in :
    ~/Library/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles/<profile folder>
The tilde character (~) refers to the current user's Home folder, so ~/Library is the /Macintosh HD/Users/<username>/Library folder.
note that in mac 10.7 and above, the ~/Library folder is hidden by default, see : http://kb.mozillazine.org/Show_hidden_files_and_folders#Mac_OS_X
when you find the file seek for '''key3.db''' and '''signons.sqlite''' files.
Your passwords are stored in two different files, both of which are required:
'''key3.db''' - This file stores your key database for your passwords. To transfer your saved passwords, you must copy this file along with the following file.
    '''signons.sqlite''' - Saved passwords
    thank you

  • How can i find my recent iPad backup in time machine?

    Hi,
hope somebody can help me here.
I had to reset my iPad due to the home button issue (this by the way seems to be a hardware issue since it did not dissapear after the reset :-( )
Unfortunately iTunes created a new back-up of my iPad at the end of this reset procedure (i.e. it is a back-up of an empty ipad).
Now I would like to re-install and configure my iPad based on a back-up couple weeks ago.
If I open Time Machine, what do I need to do find and use this particular older iPad-back-up for reinstalling my ipad?
    Thank you.

Have you checked that the older backup isn't still in iTunes? If you have checked, and it's not there, see below.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C:
    ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return. A folder should open. Restore the contents of the folder from a backup. Relaunch iTunes.

  • How to exclude an account in mail.app from time machine

Is it simply a matter of putting the account's folder from user/library/mail/ into the exclusion list on the time machine pane?
    thanks

If you mean one Mac user, yes.
If you mean only one mail account for one user, then you need the proper sub-folder.
    Note that +Address Books,+ however, are in each user's +/Library/Application Support/AddressBook+ folder.

  • HT4927 How do I restore my iPhoto library from a time machine back up of a macbook pro to an iMac?

My Macbook Pro is in a coma, but luckily I  backed up on the 20th May. I managed to get my itunes library back on my new iMac; but cannot figure out how to do the same with iPhoto. Any ideas out there?
    Thanks in advance!

Again - this is not the way to do this and generally does not work - you must use TimeMachine as designed - instructions link again  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
    Note especially
Restoring data from Time Machine backups
With Time Machine you can go "back in time" to restore files, versions of files, or your entire system. Make sure your backup drive is connected and mounted (if not, Time Machine will alert you that "Your Time Machine backup disk can't be found."
If prompted, enter an administrator name and password to proceed with the restore.
    Restoring specific files or folders
Choose Enter Time Machine from the Time Machine menu and the restore interface appears. You can literally see your windows as they appeared "back in time."
You can use the timeline on the right side of the window to reach a certain point back in time (the timeline shows the times of all backups on your backup drive). If you don’t know exactly when you deleted or changed a file, you can use the back arrow to let Time Machine automatically travel through time to show you when that folder last changed.
Note: Dates in pink indicate the data resides on your Time Machine backup device. Dates in white indicate the data resides on your Mac. In OS X Mountain Lion and Lion, portable Macs have the feature of local snapshots. See thisarticle for details.
You can also perform a Spotlight search in the Time Machine Finder Window search field to find a file. Simply type the Spotlight search field and use the back arrow to have Time Machine search through your backups to find what you are looking for.
Before you restore a file, you can also use Quick Look to preview a file to make sure its the one you want. Highlight the file and press the Space Bar to bring up a quick look.
To restore, select the file/folder and click the "Restore" button. The file will automatically be copied to the desktop or appropriate folder.  If the file you are restoring has another file in the same location with the same name, you will be prompted to choose which file to keep or keep both.
Restoring your entire system from a backup
If you are restoring a backup made by a Mac to the same Mac
With your backup drive connected, start up your Mac from the Recovery system (Command-R at startup) or Mac OS X v10.6 installation disc. Then use the "Restore From Time Machine Backup" utility.
Note: If "You can't restore this backup because it was created by a different model of Mac" appears when restoring a backup that was made on a different Mac, follow the onscreen instructions.
If you are restoring a backup made by one Mac to a completely different Mac
Important: If the backup you are about to restore is from a completely different Mac, use the Migration Assistant to transfer data from the backup, as described in the next section.
Migrating a Time Machine backup to a new Mac
When you buy a new Mac, you can transfer all of your applications, files, settings, and other information from a Time Machine backup you've already made.
You will be asked if you want to transfer files when you start up your new Mac for the first time. Or, you can use theMigration Assistant (located in Applications/Utilities).
After Migration Assistant completes the transfer and you select your existing Time Machine backup drive, you will be prompted with "Inherit Backup History". Once selected you will be able to continue to use your existing Time Machine backup on your new Mac.

  • How do I restore the login.keychain from a time machine back up in lion

I recently reinstalled Lion on my MBP after doing a back up with Time Machine. I don't want to restore everything using the migration assistant since the issues I was having were mostly due to my account. In Snow Leopard this process seemed very straght forward restoring keychains from the library folder under my user name. Now I can't find the login.keychain anywhere. I'm not sure where else the file might likely be. Any help much appreciated.

Navigate in the Finder to the /Home/Library/Keychain/ folder. Then open TM applications. Go back to the time from which you want to restore and select the file to restore.
For assistance select Help Center from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine." From the produced list select "Time Machine overview." Scroll to bottom and click on the link Restore items backed up with Time Machine.

  • How can I reset/override a forgotten password for Time Machine back up hard drive?

I have a g-drive slim but can't remember the password because I haven't used it in a long time. Checked g-drive website and it wasn't very helpful:
    http://support.g-technology.com/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=132146&sid=88d7393f2 f66e67581b8143e9b30f8ef
Also checked Apple Support for Time Machine and nothing on how to reset/override.

    Hi Vitamin A,
I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of the issue you are describing. If you are talking about an issue with an encrypted backup, there may not be a way to override the password:
You need your backup password to restore files from Time Machine backups. If you forget your backup password, Time Machine can’t use the backups.

If you are less concerned about the backup or other information and would like to continue using the disk, you may need to delete the existing volume or partition:

  • Mail unrecoverable on time machine back-up

I had the hard drive on our server crash. We host our own email and I was using Time Machine to back-up the system. I have alread purchased a new drive, reinstalled Snow Leopard and have all of our services running again on another computer. I was able to retrieve all of our work files and software back-ups through TM so life goes on.
I am now trying to obtain the emails from the database of the TM back-up. I have restored the back-up to a new drive on a separate machine. When the back-up is restored, it will only allow me to access the server via the root adminstrator. All user data and group infomation is missing from the workgroup manager. I have been able to locate the mail database and database back-up in the VAR folder. I can also see that the user information and several years of emails with attachments exist in the cyrus folders.
I have tried rebuilding the database via mailbfr tools. It seems to be successful. I can now see the user names in the accounts window for mail maintanence, but he total mail databse seems to be very small at 348 mb.
I cannot connect to the email as a client because now I have two machines running mail services to one domain and my DNS points to the new mail server.
    Can anyone tell me:
Is there a software that will convert the databe into a single archive file? This would allow me to at least rescue the data from the database, import it into a client and manually separate the information.
Is there another way I can access the mail database information and push it to a particular client?
Any other thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    BG

    Thanks for the reply Niel.
So this will migrate all my applications, files, data etc but wont overwrite the OS, is that correct?

  • How can I find out the mail server from email address?

    Hi:
How can I find out the mail server from email address?
for example: If I know the email address is [email protected],
how to find the pop3 and smtp mail server?
    THANK YOU

You can't tell by the email address since you can pretty much put whatever you want in there (especially if the SMTP server is not filtering anything).
The header may be able to tell you something. There is a Received header value which looks like it has the routing information although I am not sure if this is a complete trace or just the last hop the message took.
