How do i find and move all files across multiple disks

I just purchased a 2010 Mac Pro and wanted to set it up with a clean install of Mavericks. I installed a new SSD as my boot disk and did a clean install of Mavericks on it. All good so far.
Now from my previous Macs I have several disks (internal and external) that have pictures, music and movies spread all over the place.
I want to know how I can search all of the drives for all of a specific file type (i.e, JPEG or MP3) and then move those files to a new folder. Once I have all of the files of a specific type in a single folder I can create a new library in iPhoto or iTunes using those files.
I tried AraxisFDF and it worked well for finding the files but when it moves the files it saves then in their original file structure (i.e, volume/folder/folder/folder/file) which places the files in multiple folders again.
Any ideas?

You can clone the respective HDDs using Disk Utility>Restore or Carbon Copy Cloner. That will guarantee that you have all images and movies backed up.

How can I share a *.java source file across multiple projects in NetBeans?

I'm sure this simple and a pretty common operation but how can I share a *.java source file across multiple projects in NetBeans? Right now I keep cut, coping and pasting the same source file between multiple projects to re-use the same code. But I could I make this source file a library file or something like that so that I could access it from any project. I assume this would be a generic operation but I mentioned NetBeans for clarity. Thanks.

Create a class library.
Write your code, compile it to .class files, put those class files in a .jar file and include the jar file in the classpath whenever you want to compile a project against it.

How do I find and locate duplicate files?

What is the process to find and remove duplicate files. The tab is grayed out. I am using version 13 and have over 1000 files and many of them are duplicates

In unix you can use a combination of ls and diff.
Unfortunately Apple is notorious for creating crippleware, so they have only provided this function in iPhoto and maybe iTunes. There is no easy Finder solution, such as would make sense as part of Smart Folders!

How do i find and see all media files from email in one place?

I'm trying to find all the pictures and movies people have sent me over the years in emails and then extract them to put them into Aperture. Is there a way of doing this simply? ideally not manually where i have to open each email and save attachment but can see the attachments in one place and decide which ones to grab.

You can select any number of keyframes in a timeline and drag those keyframes forward or back in the timeline without altering any other layers. You can also select a range of frames by selecting one keyframe and then shift clicking on a second keyframe in the same layer. With these frames selected you then drag this selection left or right in that layer to move it forward or back in time. You can have more than one selection moving in more than one layer.
Alternately, you can add or delete frames from any layer. You can select more than one frame in a layer and then delete those selected frames. All of these methods are "undo-able", but you still may want to make a copy of your file before you begin a massive edit. Save after every edit of the timeline so that you don't overtax your memory.

How do I find and copy all pictures to a thumb drive

we have several old mac lap tops - I'd love to restore them all since they are getting SLOW. How do I ensure I grab all movies and pictures and transfer to either a CD or thumb drive before restoring. I'm nervous that I might delete / lose data. There is alot in the PHOTOBOOTH as well - not sure what those files are called (tif or jpeg)

How do i find and download jar files?

I have some old code and it uses import com.sun.java_cup.internal.parser
When compiling gives error on this.
Googleing this shows that its part of the rt.jar file. rt.jar is in the jre/lib folder. That is part of my classpath but still wont compile how do i find what an import belongs to and where can i download these jar files..
Java really is not a friendly language to me.

You don't need to download the rt.jar or do anything with it since it's an integral part of the JRE. If a class isn't there, then because you have too old a JRE/JDK and it's not there yet, or because it was never part of the public API and is gone now.
When I google, I only find references to Java 6. So you probably need that, which means the sources can't be sooo old.

How do I find and delete duplicate files safely?

In looking in "all files", I see that I have several duplicate of files; sometimes two, sometimes three of the same file. I somehow did this when transferring my files to this new Mac, but never the less, I would like to clean this up. Is there an app that would safely do this? There must be a better way than just looking through and cleaning this up manually....Please help, and thank you in advance!

I can't recommend an application, but suggest you avoid applications like CleanMyMac, MacKeeper, and other cleaning programs. They usually cause more harm than good.

I know this is probably easy to someone but I have spent too

Try this: lock the layers you don't want to move. Then click
that little square under your timeline that says "edit multiple
frames". Move the markers at the top of the timeline (looks like
onion skin markers) to your beg & end points that you wish to
move, then choose, SELECT ALL from your pull down menu, you will
now see your desired frames highlighted, and move everything at
once. It's great I've used it several times.
If you would've moved the layer like suggested above it would
only place your items higher in the heirarchy which is not what I
think you were asking. Good luck.

Find and sort all files in folder without invisible files

Hi all,
I am trying to check whether the newest file added to a folder is an HTML file. In theory the folder should be empty when a new file is added because the script will delete all files in the folder just before it finishes running.
However, I am having a problem with .DS_Store files being created automatically in the folder. When Finder accesses the folder it creates a new .DS_Store file and thus the newest file added to the folder is never an HTML file.
I believe that the command "without invisibles" could help me with this problem. However, I have not been able to implement this successfully. I would appreciate if someone could please point me in the right direction. Here is what I have so far.

          set sortedFiles to reverse of (sort (files of thisFolder) by modification date) as alias list
          set newestFile to item 1 of sortedFiles

Errr... A quick reality check is called for. If you make files visible to the finder then they are no longer invisible files, so ignoring invisible files won't help you one bit. your best bet is to do a manual check for a file that starts with a "." (which would normally be invisible):

How to find and move iTunes file from back-up

I have a new drive in my iMac. Now I want to move my iTunes files from my backup, but I want to know how to move it to the new computer so all my equipment will get recognized by iTunes in my new computer. Thank you.

Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the computer. Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key so you get a prompt to select a library, then guide it to the iTunes Library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.
If you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there. (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)

My laptop crashed. I have the disk (intact). How do I find and move the inbox files (not local folders) of my three pop3 accounts to the new laptop?

Old laptop had Thunderbird. THe laptop stopped working, so I took the C drive (SATA disk) and and plugged that to a USB port.
New laptop has Thunderbird installed, local folders have been restored. The inbox contents are missing (I use the option "download from server", so the recent correspondence is there.
I have three POP3 accounts, so I am trying to identify the location of three separate "inbox" and "Sent" folders, and add them to the new installation.
Where are those files stored, and what would be the simple way to restore them on the new laptop?

So this seemed to result in the outcome I wanted:
- Find the old Thunderbird profile location (.../AppData/Roaming ... THunderbird/Profiles/...default/Mail/first.account.domain/Inbox
- FInd the same location on the New laptop
Copy the first (old, backup) inbox to a new file in the New profile folder; I did Inbox.bak
Start TBird - and lo and behold, I have folders "Inbox" (recent mail since the old laptop crash) and "Inbox.bak" (the mail I thought was lost).
Looks like I need to add all accounts to the New TBird first so that it creates the profiles, and after that copy the backup Inbox & Sent files to the new profile folders.
This worked for me. Not very elegant, with several manual steps, but end result is what I needed.
It would be great if there was a smoother way for disaster recovery.
And yes, I should have had better backup policy in place. For everyone's benefit - I do Data Center systems for a living, and have seen far too many "backup" services which do not actually work in a restore situation. That's why my personal backups are direct file copies on large disks. It works, but leaves room for manual error, which is what happened here.
Actual folders, btw, I keep where I see them - "c:\users\username\Thunderbird" - for this very reason.
