How do I find "Disc Utility"?

Watching a how-to-speed-up-video video on-line and instructions start with opening Disc Utility; only info I've found is that I have to use my start-up disc(s) and "click on Disc Utility" and go from there; when I open my start-up disc, there is no listing of "Disc Utility" -- just an "unpack" icon, a read-me and one or two other things; clicking on the unpack just brings me to the "do you want to install this software...etc., etc." but still doesn't show anything about a Disc Utility; probably a very simple answer to my question, but, clearly, I'm simpler still... so any help is appreciated. Thanks.

1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

  • Finder/Disc Utility/Toast Will Not Burn DVD+R, DVD-R

I have an iMac that will no longer burn DVDs. I've tried various brands of DVD+R, DVD-R and DVD+R DL all of them do not burn in the finder, disc utility, or Toast. CDs burn fine. DVD+R DL discs burned previously with this machine will no longer mount. I just wiped the hard drive and reinstalled OS X and ran all updates and still have the problem.
Media brands tried: OfficeMax, TDK, Maxell, JVC, Sony.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Disc Utility Uses The Wrong Language

I just bought Macbook from someone who spoke Spanish, and they had the language set to Spanish.
I changed the language to English under the "language and region," setting in system preferences, and Mac Os seems to be all in English.
However, when I restart the computer and enter disc utility, the language is still in Spanish, and I can't figure out how to change it.
In the upper right hand corner there is a US flag that says, "Estadounidense", but I don't know if it this is a country or language setting.
Anyone know how I can change Disc Utility to English?
    Thanks.

It is the setting for the keyboard layout.  It should say US when the OS is running in English.
Have you removed Spanish from the language list in system prefs/language & region and restarted?

You cannot create encrypted folders in, or encrypt folders with, Disk Utility.
You can create with Disk Utility encrypted disk images from folders. I assume that's what you mean.
The proper way to do it is by setting the immutable bit. Read here
    <http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/immutableflags.html>
about the immutable bits (and the trouble they sometimes create).
The user immutable bit (uchg) is the same as the Finder lock, as described above by X423424X. It's a weak lock, with only a warning.
The system immutable bit (schg) is more powerful. Once is set, the item cannot be deleted in Finder (even though Finder will ask for your password and may give you the impression that it can trash it; it will end with an error).
I set it in Terminal, thus
    $ sudo chflags schg my_encrypted_disk_image
and unset it also in Terminal
    $ sudo chflags noschg my_encrypted_disk_image
(Note that, when you unset the system immutable bit, the change won't be reflected immediately in Finder, but the item can be trashed nevertheless.)

  • Disc utility help! USB shown there but not on finder!

    Hi!
I cannot access the information on my USB drive as it does not show on Finder (Macbook Pro with Retina Display - Late 2013).
I am using the 32GB SanDisk Cruzer Edge with some important documents that I would like to retrieve.
But then I found out that the disc was recognized on disc utility.
HOWEVER in my situation, I was unable to first aid the disk as the buttons 'verify disk' and 'repair disk' were all grey.
I tried to unmount the usb but it says that it couldn't until I 'first aid' the disk...
Any suggestions to how I can fix this?!!
    PLS HELP!!!

What are the settings in Finder Preferences?
    Ciao.

  • How to create a FAT32 partition that is primary instead of logical with disc utility?

I am trying to create a partition on an external drive, so I can use it as a hard drive for my XBOX 360. I already have data on the drive, and there is more data than I can back up. I have tried using disc utility to partition it and I use the MS-DOS FAT type, however when I plug in to my XBOX it doesnt recognize the drive, and wants to reformat the entire thing. I have read on other forums that the partition needs to be of the "primary" type instead of logical, but I cannot figure how to set it up that way. Any help would be great, thanks!

I found this blog post shortly after the first BootCamp beta was out. I successfully split mine into three partitions per the instructions. However, since Leopard now lets you live partition your disk, you can probably do the partitioning via Disk Utility instead of using diskutil in Terminal.

I have a MacBook 6,1 and have a number of start up discs. How can I find out which one came with my model?

They sometimes have that information on the label. Otherwise, it's trial and error. The model you have is a Late 2009 13" MacBook. It came with a special version of 10.6.1 pre-installed.

  • How do I find a forgotten airport express base station in Airport utility.

I tried to add my airport express to my home network. I inadvertently clicked on "forget this base station" in airport utility. I cannot seem to get it back in airport utility. How do I find it again?

    Hi,
This reply is for anyone who got this far but couldn't get further, becuase their setup was similiar and the above didn't work.
I have an Airport Extreme which I wanted to extend with a new Airport Express (2G). I first connected with a network lead and then decided I wanted to extend wirelessly so I could use the lead for my Samsung Smart TV - for Netflix. I clicked "forget" and then couldn't see the Airport Express to reconfigure it to extend my network wirelessly. Resetting the Airport Express is fine but it still doesn't appear in AirPort Utility.
You must switch ON Wi-Fi in System Prefs, Network. I didn't have it switched on because my Mac Mini is connected to the Airport Extreme with a network cable. The newly reset to Factory settings Airport is now available in AirPort Utility to select under the "Other AirPort Base Stations" button. Be careful of the default setting during setup. You do not want to use the AirPort Express instead of the AirPort Extreme (which sets the Extreme back to Default settings)
Connecting a New AirPort Express to a wired AirPort Extreme by first switching on Wi-Fi (which I wasn't using) was not intuitive. Remember to switch ON the Wi-Fi then switch it OFF after setup if you don't need it. And honestly one less thing in my living room broadcasting radio waves everywhere has got to be a good thing.

  • How long to partition a 500gb hard drive under disc utility

Now how many partitions and of what sizes do I create given 300GB size? That's up to the administrator.
Should I put everything except swap under / ?That's what I do, but others might prefer other setups.
Do I need a separate partition for /tmp, /var, /usr, /opt and so on?No. But that doesn't mean that they might not be useful in some cases.

  • How do you enter recovery mode disc utility?

On a mac mini server, how do you enter recovery mode disc utility? Before you roll your eyes, the problem I am having is obviously using bluetooth keyboard, on rebooting, it puts the keyboard to sleep so pressing CMD R whilst rebooting doesn't seem to register. Is there any way of doing this using bluetooth keyboard or do I need to get a wired keyboard?

    Thanks, I couldn't tell because I don't have a Restore partition.
