How do I find folders/files now showing up in Finder or Spotlight?

Hi all,
I have hidden a number of files/folders from myself some time ago, and have insofar been unsuccessful in finding them anywhere on my hard drive. These were originally in a password-protected .dmg I created in Disk Utility, but I moved them out of there to place in another .dmg, and now cannot recall where I put them.
It's possible they're in my /system or system/Library directory - most of these files, by the way, are .jpg's.
IS THERE ANY WAY TO FINELY COMB THROUGH YOUR HARD DRIVE TO FIND THESE FOLDERS/FILES??? I REALLY DON'T WANT TO HAVE LOST THESE!!!
It was the suggestion of Apple to see if anyone knows of a script that can be run in Automator to target this kind of problem?? Or a utility otherwise?

Just as a rule, don't store anything in /system. that's for Apple's specific use; You don't really gain anything in secrecy by hiding stuff there; you just give yourself a permissions headache for no good reason. In fact, stuff you hide their might pop up unexpectedly - for instance, if you reinstall your system and try to preserve your accounts, any unexpected files in /system may show up in an easily accessed recovery folder.
Check out EasyFind - another universal search app - if Find Any File doesn't work for you.

Folders don't show up in Finder Searches

I have Mac Book Pro OS 10.8.2.
When I search through finder, folders do not show up, unless I manually go to search options and select- Kind- "Any".
Say for instance I'm search for a folder named "walden". If It type "walden" into the finder, files named "walden" will show up but not the folder itself.
In my old finder, it was easy. You had 2 choices- "contents" and "file name".
Why won't my folders show up?

Are you talking about a regular finder window, or after you have used Cmd-F or Find in the File menu?
From what you describe, it sounds like you are editing a saved search, and not just "finding" normally.
When you select Find, you should see something like this:
Spotlight is the indexing and search technology that Apple uses to find things. You can do a "Spotlight Search" by typing a string into the Spotlight search field in the menu bar.
Whether you use the Finder, or Spotlight in the menu bar, Spotlight is used to do the search.

When I go into Time Machine, I see earlier dates but can't see files in my User File. I have File Vault turned on and see my home folder as a sparsebundle. Do I neede to restore this in order to see files in my home folder. When I click on it to restore it gives me an estimated time of over 2 hours. Also tried to restore an Excel file I was working on when computer hung, so lost it without saving or naming it. Does it exist anyplace and can I restore it?

Thanks. I had pretty much figured out from other posts that I had better turn off File Vault for my home folder and use a disk utility sparse bundel for little information I wanted to secure. The information about File Vault 2 in Lion was new and useful though.

Trying to move files into a new folder and th finder folders disappear and show latest open application

I did not have this problem running the beta. I upgraded to the shipping version yesterday and whenever I try to move a file or application into another folder, both folders disappear, the desktop screen flashes, then I see the finder folders behind whatever application I had open last sitting on top of the finder window. If I let go of the mouse nothing moves and the windows close.

I'm having the same or similar issue... I think... trying to do a little house cleaning in the file structure. For example, in our events folder I'm creating archive folders (i.e. - 2004, 2005, ect...) and when I use the Files Panel to drag and drop the past event pages into the newly created archive folder, the pages loose all their links.
Image link prior to and after moving are the same (../images/logo1.gif)
It does ask me to confirm that I want to move the file but nothing about updating the links. Is it due to the way the files are linked in the original files?

You should be able to open and view the contents of any directories you have access permissions to using FInder, by navigating the directory tree to the folders in question and opening them as you would your own folders. If you know the full path-name of the directory, you can enter it into the Finder navigator opened by Apple-Shift-G; the dialog that pops up uses the same directory listing method as all unix systems, and has tab completion for ease of use. In general, all users have their home directories in /Users/, or you can simply use ~/../<name> to go to the home folder of a user via the parent (..) directory of your home (~) directory. If you are experiencing bugs or errors with this, as opposed to simply not knowing how to do this, please post any details of your experience so that others can help troubleshoot your problems.

How do I view folders in the aperture library. If I look in my pictures I have the applibrary there but can't access it. If I click on it it opens Aperture and I can't find a way to find the info throught aperture either.

You can browse the contents of your Aperture Library from the Finder, but better do not change anything inside.
To look inside the Aperture Library package
Reveal the package in the Finder,
right-click or ctrl-click it and select "Show Package Contents" from the pop-up menu.
You will see a folder with subfolders containing the masters, previews, and thumbnails.
The iLife Applications will let you browse the Aperture Library through the MediaBrowser, that is much safer.

P.S. If your Aperture Library is referenced, not managed, you can view the master image files by selecting the image in Aperture in the Browser or film strip, ctrl-clicking it and selecting "Show in Finder".

How to organize thousands of files, now in root directory, into subfolders

I'm trying to improve my 20-year-old website, originally created in FrontPage and now modified in Expression Web.
I have about twenty HTML pages accessed from index.htm. Each page covers one subject, and contains internal hyperlinks to many thousands of other files (mostly PDFs). Most of those files were dumped into the root directory.
For the past several years I've been using sub-folders to keep new files organized by subject. I'd like to do the same for the older files too.
I guess the filenames were meaningful to me at the time, but many now seem mysterious. For the files whose subject is obvious from the filename, I've been dragging them to sub-folders in Expression Web. Is there some method in Expression Web that would allow
me to view all the internal hyperlinks from my twenty HTML pages and move them in bulk to my new sub-folders?
I see how to view all the hyperlinks from each HTML file, but it's a jumble of internal and external links, in no particular order, so I don't see any easy way move all the internally linked files, other than tracking them down, one by one. If there's an
easier way, I'd love to hear about it!

I'm not sure what you are asking, but I think the answer is "no". The hyperlink report is what it is, and there is no way to select files from it and bulk move them. It should be clear what links are internal, but it is up to
you to find those files and move them to the right folder,.

I locked my N79 files, now I can't find them on ph...

I used Sonica to lock my Images, My Videos, and Videos files on my N79. Then instead of me being able to open them but be asked for a Password, I couldn't find them at all. Then I unlocked them and they were back (I think).
Then I got this Java locker, and locked them. The same problem persisted, Then when I tried unlocking them, but it kept saying something like "Error, file can't be located" or something like that. I uninstalled it but still can't find my files. I can see them fine on the PC but not on the phone itself.
These are the files on my microSD card, so maybe there's a problem with it I can fix? Pictures I newly take appear on the Phone but I can't access those folders via File Manager. Also, 6 images that I moved from the Phone to the microSD card appear as broken images on the Phone, but they can't be found on the Phone images memory via File Manager. Which is odd. I edited the pictures by renaming them via File Manager, as I didn't add ".jpg" they became broken files. When I added ".jpg" they became fine.
All my images, even the newly taken ones, by this I mean after the locking incidence, are perfectly fine and available via my PC. What my aim was was to lock my Photos with a code. That's failed as my Pictures can still be access via the icon/Gallery, but aren't available through File Manager.
What can I do you fix this so I can access Images, My Videos and Videos, again via File Manager.
Is there an on-board way I can Pin Lock my Files?

I re-fromatted the card, loosing all my files Stupid me didn't save them on pc. argh! It wasn't much anyway, just sentimental... Anyway, it should be fixed now.

How to get the Creative Cloud to show in the Finder window

I have Creative Cloud Photoshop downloaded to my Mac and Mac Air. On my Mac, Creative Cloud shows up in the Finder Window which makes it easy to open/save files but it doesn't show in the Finder window on my Mac Air. Anyone know how I can get it to show?

Lately can not find a file location directory, when searching for the file finder finds it right away but I can not see where the file is located in the computer directory. Lately I see simplification of Mac OSX which is not always a good thing where I have to find the answers on the internet when my intuitive way is out- like finding monitor resolution with a use of option key to display all the options. I looks like Windows 8 and Microsoft philosophy of simplification without any logic is adopted by Apple engineers.

Open Finder> go to View> choose "Show Path Bar."
Highlight any file and the complete path will show in the bottom finder window bar now.

PDF Files now show up Pink

Has anyone noticed that Some of there PDF Files are now showing up as Pink in IBooks after the IOS7 update?

I have this ame issue
About 2/3 of my pdfs are just fine but 1/3 are all pink and green and unreadable (they look a bit like old photo negatives)
I checked the pdfs in their original format on my PC - all are readable on my Windows PC - the ones that are wrong on the ipad are smaller in size (under 40MB) than the ones that are normal on the ipad
They dont open corrctly in any app I've tried including iBooks and GoodReader - even after delete and reinstall (either through iTunes or Dropbox)

ProRes files not showing properly in finder?

Normally when importing regular HD footage (FCP), the clips show up in finder and I'm able to preview them using quicktime.
Since switching to ProRes, the clips are not associated anymore with quicktime and cannot be previewed. Has anybody else ran into this? If so, is there a workaround?
I'd like to be able to pull these clips from finder and use them in other apps (motion, etc...)

Thanks for the quick replies, here's what I'm doing:
Importing via firewire from my HV30 directly into FCP using ProRes422 as my sequence preset (device control is HDV FW basic). That all works fine.
When I locate the clips (reveal in finder), the clips have no extension to them. I've actually tried adding a *.mov extension to the file, and it opens quicktime, but nothing will play.
All this is being done on the same macbook.
