  • How do I move my home directory to another disk?

    I want to find out the "standard procedure" for moving my home directory to another disk.  My current system disk is getting quite full, so I have purchased additional storage.  The issues I am concerned about are the following:
    Preserving the file permissions
    I have used rsync and ditto commands to copy the file.  Does rsync preserve the permissions like the ditto command?
    Updating the System to use the new home directory
    I have used the Ctl-Click on the accounts control panel to update the location of the home directories.  Do applications use "~<username>" or /Users/<username> to find the home directory of the user (obviously this is limited to Apple Controlled software).
    Understanding the /Users and /home directories
    Since Apple is no longer using netinfo, I wanted to get a better understanding how these directories are set up.  Is the /home directory exclusively for network mounted home directories.
    Please let me know if you have any questions.

    I disagree with Linc Davis on whether to move the home folder, But I think you are going about it the wrong way.
    Having a Boot drive with only System, Library, Applications, and the hidden unix directories including Paging/Swap on it is one of the best ways to speed up routine disk Access for all your other files. The system keeps "snacking" away loading and reloading bits and pieces of System and Applications as you work, and that System activity slows "regular" disk access way down by moving the drive heads away from the files you are processing.
    Giving System files their own drive speeds up everything.
    Here are two good recipes and discussions about how and why to do this, and how to make it happen without a single line of Terminal code:

    I have my personal music (not purchased from Itunes) stored in two locations, on my PC and on an external HD. How can I find out which directory itunes uses to access this music? I am using Itunes version 11.4.0.18. Thanks

    Many thanks JEM24 for your help.  Ive just spent the best part of six hundred pounds on a new Sony Rx100m2 compact camera, so I have no interest in the Ipods camera at all really. I doubt Ill be watching many videos on it as Im very lucky in that I have a good Android tablet. Its more as a stock music player that Ill be buying the Ipod for, if indeed I do end up buying one. I dont like the idea of paying the exorbitant amount added for more memory space that Apple along with most other companies charge. In fact I read an article on this very subject just yesterday in the tech section of Flipboard. It stated in the article that in the case of the Iphone  the actual cost of each additional  gigabyte of storage  to Apple et al is something in the order of 60p.. This is certainly not reflected in the price us the customer has to pay at the till.. Its for this reason primarily that Apple in particular, because their products do not allow adding expandable memory of your own in the form of cheap to buy cards, that nobody in their right mind buys the 64gig etc Iphones..I am aware that we are discussing my potential purchase of an Ipod Touch here but you see my point. Many thanks again though for helping me.

  • How can I change my "Home directory" folder name?

    Hello, everyone.
    I was given a pre-owned MacBook Pro that's running OS 10.6.8.  How can I change the name on the Home directory folder?  I was able to change the Administrator Account settings, but the Home directory still shows the previous owner's name.  It bothers me a bit, though, to see the previous owner's name still come up on the Home folder.
    I came across the instruction listed below, but I can't get past step 4.  It instructs me "rename it just like I would rename any folder."  I can't seem to rename it, though.  The cursor doesn't come up when I click on the folder name.
    For Mac OS X v10.5 or later
    Enable the root user.
    Log in as root.
    Navigate to the /Users folder.
    Select the Home folder with the short name you want to change, and rename it just like you would rename any folder. Keep in mind that the shortname must be all lowercase, with no spaces, and only contain letters.
    Use the Users & Groups pane (Accounts pane in Mac OS X v10.6.8 or earlier) in System Preferences to create a new user with the Account name or Short Name that you used in the previous step.
    Click OK when "A folder in the Users folder already has the name 'account name'. Would you like to use that folder as the Home folder for this user account?" appears. Note: This will correct the ownership of all files in the Home folder, and avoid permissions issues with the contents.
    Choose Log Out from the Apple menu.
    Log in as the newly created user. You should be able to access all of your original files (on the desktop, in Documents, and in the other folders of this Home).
    After verifying that your data is as expected, you can delete the original user account via the Users & Groups pane (Accounts pane in Mac OS X v10.6.8 or earlier).
    Disable the root user.
    Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi everyone,
    I followed this https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3872
    and got to the stage of having renamed my Home folder with the new name but the Home folder is STILL designated to the old name?
    When I try and create a new user with the new name, I don't get asked if I'd like to use the existing name as Home folder, I get told I can't use the newname because it exists already - thats the end of it - no further options.
    So to clarify - I now have oldname folder STILL assigned as Home folder. A newname folder with all my stuff in - apps, desktop, etc etc but this is just another user folder.
    Interestingly at login stage, the oldname folder isn't an option. I think I've confused the system somewhere by titling things differently at some stage in an attempt to rename Home folder.
    I'm running Mountain Lion (as of yesterday) and because I've kinda lost the use of my User folder as the Home folder, can't get to my Time Machine. I'm in trouble but I'm trying not to panic. Would appreciate any help!
    Laurie

  • How do I find the HOME button to bring up the default home page?

    I was on Windows Vista and now I have installed Windows 7. I had Firefox Sync working on Vista. I don't seem to be able to get it to work on Windows 7. I have gone thru the instructions on how to get it working on 7 but I don't know how to find the the Firefox Home page to click the Sync button. Also how do I find my recovery key?

    Hi psimsic,
    You can just type about:home into the address bar and hit enter to get to the default FF home page. You should look at the article [[I've lost my Firefox Sync account information - What to do]] for details on recovering your sync info.
    Hopefully this helps!

  • How can I use the /home directory

    I'm doing development work on my Mac (running Snow Leopard). The output location for the production server I use is under "/home/subdir". I'd like to develop my files on the Mac so they reside in the same relative location, but from the default install this is not possible.
    The /home directory is hidden by default. If I view hidden files, it looks like a mounted hard drive, but with no space. If I try to do something in the /home directory, I get "Operation not supported". For example, from the command line "sudo mkdir /home/test" returns "mkdir: /home/test: Operation not supported".
    (Originally, when I was useing Leopard, I moved the installed /home to /home_old and created my own /home directory, but the install to Snow Leopard reverted it back to the locked out /home dir. The other one was preserved, but it makes me nervous enough that I don't want to try it again without some reassurance.)
    So, the question: Is there a safe way to use /home on a Mac running Snow Leopard?

    Found the answer in another forum post here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2073807&tstart=0
    To get the /home directory back. Edit /etc/auto_master and remove or comment out the line that starts with "/home". Then reboot.

  • Finding java home directory during runtime

    Hello dear all,
    My problem is that i need to locate the java home directory dynamically during the runtime
    of my application in order to use the /bin/jar tool.
    Can you please provide me some help?
    Thanks in advance,
    Artemakis

    The different OS's all have a facility (usually called environment variables) that contains OS parameters. If you place the location of the java home directory in one of the parameters it can be retrieved from within a Java program. An example entry would be JAVA_HOME=C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0_01 (in Windows)
    The method to do this varies by version. Java 5 has a method in the System class, getenv(JAVA_HOME) that does this.
    Earlier versions must pass the parameter name and value in at JVM startup, then the value can be retrieved by a java statement.
    // This passes it in
    java -DJAVA_HOME=C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0_01 <yourClass>
    // This retrieves it
    System.getProperty(JAVA_HOME);

  • How do I find the Home/Library on a backup disk?

    On my Mac laptop using Mountain Lion, the Home/Library is found by holding the Option key while selecting the GO menu. But if I want to replace a file from my backup disk (I backup with Time Machine), how do I get to the Library window to get this file? Is the Home/Library folder actually backed up on my backup disk?

    ~/Library is been backed up, even if it's hidden. To access to the content of that folder from the Time Machine backup, open this folder using the steps you gave in the question.
    Then, just open the Time Machine app and restore the files you want. If you want to restore a file from a folder which is inside ~/Library, access to this folder and open the Time Machine app. See "Restoring data from Time Machine backups" > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
    If this doesn't work, unhide the folder. To do it, open Terminal (it's in /Applications/Utilities) and type:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library

  • How can I find the Scripts directory from a script?

    Hello all! After playing with Photoshop scripting, I'm now playing with AE too, and in my first try I've stuck in finding the scripts path from the script itself.
    In Photoshop, there was this piece of code that somebody in the Photoshop Scripting forum kindly shared:
    var scriptsPath = new Folder (app.path + "/" + localize ("$$$/ScriptingSupport/InstalledScripts=Presets/Scripts"));
    But this line doesn't work in After Effects because app.path variable doesn't exist (very funny, I thought Photoshop and After Effects shared the same basic app variables) and the path given to the "localize" function is wrong in AE (I think "$$$" means nothing to it).
    Can somebody give me a clue about how to solve this? Thanks a lot in advance :-)

    This script shows a couple of examples you can try. The first part shows a way to get the folder the running script is in. The second gets the main AE app folder although I don't know if appFolder works on Windows (you'd still need to add /Scripts on Mac or /SupportFiles/Scripts on Win).
    var thisScript = new File($.fileName);
    var containingFolder = new Folder(thisScript.parent.absoluteURI);
    alert("This script is in " + containingFolder.absoluteURI);
    var appFolder = new Folder(Folder.appPackage.parent.absoluteURI);
    alert("The app folder is at " + Folder.decode(appFolder.absoluteURI));

  • Help with Finder and Home Directory

    I know this sounds daft but I wish to create a new folder under the home folder on my system but the house icon within finder has a lock on it. I have tried applying root access to this account and accessing finder again but to no avail. Therefore I assume I need to do something else to be able achieve this?

    It's supposed to have a lock on it, requiring an admin user password to unlock. There's no reason to use root access. Click on the lock, enter your admin password, and set the settings as: user w/R&W, staff or admin w/R only, and everyone w/read only. That should allow you to create a folder within that account.

My current version of Windows Live Photo Gallery Plugin is shown as 15.4.3508.1109 last updated Novmber 10, 2010.
