How do I find noise margin etc?

Over the past few months my download speed has dropped from around 7M to around 3. Work has been going on since the start of the year to bring FTTC to the area and I assumed that this was to blame. But that work has now finished, although I personally am unable to get upgraded. I think it may now be a case of the Mods resetting my profile, but I can't seen to find the noise margin etc from my hub stats. I use HH4. Can somebody please help me with this?

Go to Settings/icloud. The Apple ID at the top of the screen is the only one you need to be concerned about. That one MUST be a working ID, and you must know the password for it, or you will be unable to use the phone if it ever crashes, you want to update it, or you want to sell it.

  • How do I find images in LR 2.4 (imported from CS4 Bridge) that have color labels already assigned In CS4 Bridge? I have set both Bridge and LR color labels text to match (eg Green for green, etc).

How do you find images in LR 2.4 that have been imported from CS4 Bridge and have been assigned a color label in Bridge?  I have set both LR 2.4 and my CS4 Bridge to match the text for each color to be the same (eg. Green for green, etc), and the filter search in LR 2.4 shows that a label has been assigned, but I am unable to identify and locate the specific images in LR 2.4 that have had a color label assigned from CS4 Bridge.  I have tried to search via attribute, metadata, text, etc...Is it necessary to re-assign color labels all over again, image by image, in LR 2.4, or is there a way to automatically have the color labels assigned in CS4 Bridge be assigned and searchable to the images after they have been imported into the LR 2.4 catalogue from the Bridge program?

I closed both programs and re-imported photos and re-tried the action of having LR  read the XMP metadata from the CS4 files, and it seems to work now just fine...don't know why now and not before, but thanks much. Is there a way to have LR do this automatically upon import of images from CS4?  I tried to do this with an import metadata preset, but no luck.  It seems as if I can only do this once the images have already been imported into LR, and then to have to have LR read the metadata from the CS4 Bridge files.  thanks gain.

My ipad stores my documents in iCloud. How can I find them from a different computer?  I used to use a memory stick and could work on my documents on any computer and want to have a replacement system using documents created on my ipad - I can't use a memory stick with it.

How do you know that they are on iCloud, the iPad can (and does) save locally. If they are on iCloud they will be accessible via the application that created them (Pages, Numbers etc) and can be reached from any computer with iCloud access by logging to iCloud.com. But you did that and stated that they are not there, so what makes you think that they are?

    Hello astroboy,
it all depends on your signal...
Easy approach: make a low pass filter (running average or similar). This will filter out high frequency noise (in my experience the common case).

  • Question about Noise Margin and Line Attenuation a...

    1.       For several years I have had a BT telephone line.  From the utilities provided by http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl I find  that I am connected to the Exchange at Merton Park (BT Code: LSMEPK)  Distance:-   Direct:    960 metres (appx)*  By Road:  1.29 km. 2.       I  previously had broadband from UKOnline  and used a Speedtouch 570 adsl modem. I was paying £9.99 for a speed of 1MBit/s – in practice 700K – which was fine for most purposes but BBC iplayer did struggle a bit. UkOnline has been taken over by SKY so I switched to BT Total Broadband Option 3 in mid December, and initially used the Speedtouch 570 as there were delivery delays on BT Home Hub 2.0 due to weather conditions.  Speed was initially very good but did not measure it.
    3.       After Xmas I set up the BT Home Hub and ran a  speed test  - the profile was 2.5MBit/s.  I was disappointed to get less than 3Mbit/s which is needed for BBC iplayer HD.

    4.       As part of the “slow speed wizard” I looked into getting the accelerator plate for my NTE5 split face master socket available for postage only (£1.20) but the web form advised me that if I proceeded with this order the broadband contract would automatically be extended by 12 months. I checked my BT internet account and was surprised to find an email (23rd Dec 2010) advising me that as an Option *1* customer I was in danger of exceeding my usage allowance – which surprised me as I am definitely Option 3. I wondered if I had had the speed throttled. Therefore phoned BT accounts who said the email was a mistake - I am Option 3,  also said that accelerator plate was unlikely to make a difference.
    5.       I contacted the BT call centre who talked me through various options. Plugging the hub direct into the master socket made no difference.  They also ran a line test and said the line was fine.
    6.       I therefore browsed the community care forum and find that disappointing speeds are not uncommon. One of the threads mentioned disconnecting the bell wire on the extensions. I follow this advice and removed line 3 on all extensions and then checked the ADSL status on the hub.

    7.       This had a dramatic improvement on Upstream speed –  and a big change to the noise margin Noise margin which had been (Down/Up) 15.7 dB / 31.9 dB  and is now Noise margin (Down/Up)  31.8 dB / 14.4 dB. It did not improve the download speed.
    8.       In the following days the BT hub has not been particularly stable with some intermittent loss of wireless connectivity every few hours. Examining the event log I was a bit disconcerted to see  alterations to firewall settings had happened (which I hadn’t made) and resets which I am pretty certain I hadn’t made – and a userid login with a name like TR69. Perhaps these are occasioned by the BT speedtester? To be fair I had reset and powered off the hub a number of times in attempt to sort out this problems.
    9.        I have switched to a Netgear DG83GT (V1.03.23)  for the time being until I have what I can regard as a reasonably fast stabile connection.  At the time of writing this has been stable for 20 hours DownStream Connection Speed 2268 kbps UpStream Connection Speed  888 kbps.As stated earlier I would like downstream to be faster.
The perceived wisdom on the forum seems to be that several days of complete stability are required if there is to be any improvement on speed.
    10.   If a moderator or anyone with the relevant experience reads this I would be very grateful for answers to the follow questions:
    A.      Is the change in the Noise Margin parameter a good thing or a bad thing?
    B.      Are the line attenuation figures acceptable for a distance of under 1.5kilometres to the exchange?
    C.      Should I be able in theory to get a faster speed i.e. downstream 3Mbit/s?
    D.      From the forum it seems to take several days for speed adjustments to be effected or to take effect – is this a technical issue or a policy issue?
    Many thanks.

These were not initiated by me - and since noise margins and sync speeds changed as a consequence can I assume that this is evidence of the adaptive process working?
Secondly, as you can see, the noise ratio has vastly improved as have the upstream and downstream sync speeds

BUT from the BT speedtester, as shown below  I seem to be stuck in a banded IP profile of 1750/1091 which is very different from the  downstream sync speeds of 11199 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM)

  • How do PS CS3 Noise Reduction Filters compare with dedicated third-party plug-ins?

Am I missing something by not installing a dedicated Noise Reduction application into my PS CS3? Can Neat Image, Noise Ninja, Noiseware Pro, etc. do something that the PS CS3 Noise Filters can't do? Do these third-party aplications do it better?
Since I like flashless photography, and I generally carry with me small-sensor compacts when I travel, I'm frequently confronted with the problem of digital noise. I've always wondered how the third-party noise reduction applications perform in comparison with the Photoshop Noise Filters. I hope someone in this Forum has been able to acquire direct experience on this topic and will be kind enough to share this experience with us.
    Kindest Regards,
    Conrad

    Conrad,
ACR 4.3 has better NR (noise reduction) than previous versions and can handle NR in most normal situations. However, available light photography with a small pixel sensor may require more NR and the specialized plugins such as Noise Ninja, NeatImage, and NoiseWare Pro can do a better job. I have all three and they do an excellent job, but I currently use NoiseWare most of the time.
Here is a demonstration of NoiseWare vs ACR NR, using 100% crops of an image taken with the Nikon D200, 1/320 sec at f/2.8. The image is reasonably sharp at normal viewing conditions, but has quite a lot of luminance noise. It was rendered with ACR and the settings were exposure +0.85, brightness +60. One thing you learn early in this type of shooting is to expose to the right to reduce noise, but this may conflict with stopping action and reducing camera shake. More exposure would have helped this image, and one should try to avoid exposures requiring this amount of positive exposure adjustment.
The results are shown below, followed by some discussion. Other comments are welcome. Color noise is not prominent in this image and I left color NR at its default.
    ACR, No sharpening, no NR
ACR, Luminance NR 53, no sharpening
ACR, No NR, No sharpening, NoiseWare default, no sharpening
Noise reduction and sharpening are antagonistic processes. It is important that NR is applied before sharpening--you don't want to sharpen noise. Following NR there is an inevitable loss of detail, and some sharpening is necessary to restore the detail, but this also brings back the noise. One can use masks and blend if sliders in Photoshop in both NR and sharpening to mitigate some of these effects, and Bruce Fraser discusses the details in his excellent book on sharpening.
If you use an add on such as NoiseWare, you should turn off luminance sharpening in ACR. In doing so, you lose all those nifty sharpening features that have recently been added to ACR. I leave color NR at the default. It has a minimal effect on detail.
In adjusting the NR in ACR at 100% viewing, I estimated that a luminance setting of +53 was optimal. Beyond that, blotchy artifacts appear in the image.
For NoiseWarePro, I used the default settings with no sharpening. The NR effect is dramatic, but detail is lost and some sharpening is needed. This could be applied in NoiseWare or in Photoshop, perhaps with a plugin such as PhotoKit Sharpener. Personally, I have found that PK does not work well with this type of image because it bring back noise and produces artifacts.
In all of these examples, sharpening is needed following the NR. One could try to use surface masks to keep sharpening in Photoshop with the unsharp mask away from the edges. However, I find it is difficult to get a good surface mask, and I don't take the trouble.
For now, I use the sharpening built into NoiseWare. I don't know how it works internally, but it does have a slider for detail protection, and you can play with this to get the best result. It would be best to have the robust NR of the add ons built into ACR much like NoiseNinja is built into Bibble Pro. However, this is an ACR forum and I would expect that ACR is the preferred raw converter of those who frequent this forum.
After expending this much effort on the post, I hope to get some helpful feedback.

  • How do I find help?

How do I find something that is at least partly like a manual. I ask for Lightroom help and get a page giving me 3 topics for LR3, which I don't have. I've done the Clasroom in a book, still can't findout how to do simple things. Other Adobe programs have help nicely organized by subjectand task. Why not Lightroom?

There are some notable differences between LR3 and LR2, but most of these differences revolve around new features like enhanced noise reduction, lens correction, etc., etc.
A good portion of LR3 still functions pretty much like LR2, enough so that LR2 users can usually jump into LR3 without any real learning curve at all.  If you're simply trying to figure out how to do simple things, any documentation made for LR3 will probably be helpful.  Indeed, much of LR3's most publicized documentation deals with showcasing and explaining new features or changes not found in LR2.  Nonetheless, most basic principles between LR2 and LR3 remain unchanged.

  • Noise Margin Query

    Hello
I have recently joined BT for my broadband (16Meg Unlimited).
I had a problem with the router dropping out and rebooting, I thought that this was just the system settling down etc, however after about 10 days I noticed that things had gone slow so started doing some investigation and found that everytime the phone was rang/used that is when the Internet dropped out. I traced the fault to the filter and since having replaced the filter everything has been stable and speed has increased, all good then you say!
I have kept a log of the updates/reboots, I have not touched/rebooted the router since the filter has been replaced per everything I have read on here. Please below for the log
    16:52:16, 05 Feb. ( 1270.420000) DSL noise margin: 6.00 dB upstream, 14.90 dB downstream
    16:52:15, 05 Feb. ( 1269.510000) DSL line rate: 669 Kbps upstream, 6656 Kbps downstream
This when I found the issue with the filter. Note the increase in upstream.
19:26:46, 05 Feb. (10540.350000) DSL noise margin: 6.10 dB upstream, 15.30 dB downstream
19:26:45, 05 Feb. (10539.440000) DSL line rate: 1188 Kbps upstream, 6656 Kbps downstream
06:22:53, 10 Feb. (395504.760000) DSL noise margin: 6.10 dB upstream, 15.00 dB downstream
06:22:53, 10 Feb. (395503.850000) DSL line rate: 1160 Kbps upstream, 14045 Kbps downstream
This was a reboot by the router
04:17:38, 13 Feb. (647187.910000) DSL noise margin: 5.80 dB upstream, 15.00 dB downstream
04:17:37, 13 Feb. (647186.890000) DSL line rate: 1207 Kbps upstream, 13541 Kbps downstream
    Another reboot by the router
00:49:34, 14 Feb. (721103.480000) DSL noise margin: 6.00 dB upstream, 15.00 dB downstream
00:49:33, 14 Feb. (721102.460000) DSL line rate: 1184 Kbps upstream, 13573 Kbps downstream
Another reboot by the router This has been the last reboot of the router and is still up and running with no interruptions.
    Connection time: 6 days, 11:46:48
    Downstream: 13.26 Mbps
    Upstream: 1.156 Mbps
Now for the question? Everything I have read says that BT tries for a noise margin of 6db and this is fine on the upstream but not on the Downstream. Will this correct itself in time or does this require a reset?
Edied to say that the exchange is just down the road from my house and acording to the engineer is just under 600 Mts reading off his meter.
    Many Thanks
