How do i find out if my imac is using my neighbour's wireless router?
i am new to macs.... when i bought my imac computer the sales person told me to enjoy my new computer and to call if any problems. He said to just plug it in and it will work with my existing wireless network ( i have two pc s as well using a wireless dell router). And he was right. Just plug it in. Amazing. No having to configure things, install things.....NOTHING ..(..Steve Jobs is my hero...and Bill Gates?...Boo,hiss and so on)
My question is this....how do i know that my computer is actually using my router and not one of my neighbor's wireless router on the road that i live on? ...the reason i ask this is that on rare occasions i cannot connect to the internet or i get disconnected....
mac Mac OS 9.2.x
Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
If you go to the Airport Menu (or Apple Menu > System Preferences... > Network if you haven't enabled the Airport menu ) you can see the SSID of the wireless network you are connected to.
If you are connected to your neighbour's network then he is showing poor practice in allowing his network to be unprotected. If your iMac has connected to your network without you entering the password the you are standing in to danger as you have an unprotected network too. Here are some reasons why you should protect your Wireless Network:
Bandwidth. If all your other neighbours decide not to pay for broadband Internet they get to use yours for free.
War Drivers. These a people in a car with a Wireless enabled laptop drive around looking for unprotected networks.
Your Network. Access to the files on your computer.
Criminal Activity. Your Internet Service Provider assigns you an IP address whilst you are on the Internet. If someone perpetrates a crime; spamming, illegal documents etc whilst "borrowing" your network you will be implicated and it will be difficult to prove this data wasn't passed through your computers.
So here's what you need to do now:
Change your SSID (from "Dell54g" or whatever it is right now). Nothing screams unprotected network like a default named SSID.
In your Router deselect "broadcast SSID" - this means that it's harder to find.
Unable WEP, WPA or WPA2 encryption to your network. A password will be required to access it from all you computers (but on the Mac at least you'll only need to enter it once the Mac will save it in you Keychain and reenter it everytime your Mac needs Wireless access).
Enable your Firewall in the router. This limits the use of certain ports. You should also check the the Mac's firewall ( Apple Menu > System Preferences... > Sharing > Firewall > ) has the more advanced features in use such as "Firewall Logging" and "Stealth Mode". Unfortunately your Windows machines don't have this feature.
Enable MAC blocking. Whilst it's easy to spoof a MAC address, so it shouldn't be used a primary security method, it will help. A MAC address is a worldwide unique hardware number in the form 00 00 00 00 00 00 that every piece of network hardware has (so your iMac has 3 MAC addresses (Ethernet, Firewire and Airport) and your PCs will also have multiple MAC addresses too - you can find them in Apple Menu > About this Mac... > More Info...). Enter these MAC Addresses into your Dell router and then the router will only talk to devices which match that hardware address.
So the bottom line; right now I would be very concerned about the security of your wireless network. Whilst your Mac is probably safe because of how robust OS X is with it's own Firewall and Unix style Admin, your PCs are wide open to abuse right now.
I'm sure that my reply raises more questions than answers so feel free to come back to us.
kind regards
mrtotes

How do I find out what features are not useful in my Classifier?
How do I find out what features are not useful in my Classifier? I am trying to trim down the number of features to speed up the training of my data, I have about 3700 features. I have found the Filter Based Feature Selection Module and have not been successful
in using it. I have looked through all the examples and have not been able to find any examples using the module. Will the Filter Based Feature Selection Module help me to trim features. If so how do I use it?One way to do this would be is to use a random forest classifier. Feature/variable importance can be obtained relatively easily with random forests.
Here is how you may do it in R.
> install.packages('randomForest') #install randomForest package in R if it is not already there
> library(randomForest) # reference the library
> data(mtcars) # load motor cars data that ships with
#train a random forest
> mtcars.rf <- randomForest(mpg ~ ., data=mtcars, ntree=1000,keep.forest=FALSE, importance=TRUE)
> importance(mtcars.rf)
> importance(mtcars.rf)
#You will see an output like below
%IncMSE IncNodePurity
cyl 16.168645 169.96741
disp 18.672188 260.08722
hp 17.584375 184.95007
drat 6.948743 63.54528
wt 17.818509 254.30347
qsec 4.772889 33.25546

am 5.210181 17.36626
gear 4.619161 21.55450
carb 8.577037 28.46715
# or plot the importance as follows
> varImpPlot(mtcars.rf)
What this tells you is how important predictors/features/variables like horsepower(hp), weight(wt), no. of cylinders (cyl) is in predicting miles per gallon (mpg).
If you are wondering how the data looks like. Try this
head(mtcars) # gives first few lines of the data set.
mpg cyl disp hp drat wt ...
Mazda RX4 21.0 6 160 110 3.90 2.62 ...
Mazda RX4 Wag 21.0 6 160 110 3.90 2.88 ...
Datsun 710 22.8 4 108 93 3.85 2.32 ...
. Try this

How do I find out what filters I have used in an open document?
How do I find out what filters I have used in an open document? I have been playing around with several filters and do not remember what I have done. I would like to use this filter setting for another image.
Thanks1) save as psd for reverting later if needed
2) Click on the filter closest to the bottom in the history panel.
3) Choose the filter from the filter menu that was listed in the history panel
4)See what settings are there then click cancel
5)Repeat for the next filter up on the history panel
Do all of this before creating more steps that could push those steps from the history panel or close the document or photoshop as the history panel will be cleared.
Disclaimer: Even though the settings should be in the filters that you used last, there is no guarantee especially if used again afterwards with a different setting. -

How do I find out if my Imac is over heated
I wanted to know how to find out if my mac overheats. I think that's what's causing game crashes. If possible I also wanted to find out if my fans work.I haven't heard them come on. Only once.
Hi,
as for temperature and fan readings have a look at iStat Menus http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatmenus/ and (if neccessary) SMC Fan Control http://homepage.mac.com/holtmann/eidac/software/smcfancontrol2/index.html to rev up the fans.
Hope it helps

How can I find out which iTunes account was used to make a purchase?
Without really understanding how iTunes and Apple IDs worked, I created a US iTunes account on my MacBook Air as some of the content I wanted wasn't available in the Australian iTunes store. So I had two iTunes accounts on the one device and I just switched between one account and the other. But eventually I ran into problems with the whole 35 Day and 90 Day restrictions when trying to change between one and the other. So now I'm going to use two separate devices to manage the two accounts, but I want to be able to remove everything I bought from the US iTunes account from my MacBook Air and keep only the stuff I bought from the Australian store. Is it possible to find out which account was used to buy a particular song/video/TV programme?
Select the tune and then - Get Info - in the dialog box is a note of the Apple ID used to purchase.

How do I find out the template that was used to create a new page?
We inherited a website from a previous developer. It is in ASP. When
we try to change say the background color of a page it says the page uses a template the changes we make will
not be changed. There is a template folder but each of the templates in it give us
the same message. There is also a New Templates folder but each of the templates there give us the same e
rror message when we try to chang them.
If I open say the home.asp page how can I tell what template was used to create the page?I tried to change the background color of all the include pages I found like header.asp, etc. None of the includes are the main template. Is there another way to find out that it is?
Thanks alot. -
HT1311 How can I find out, what Apple ID was used for an App I recently purchased?
I have several Apple IDs and used one of these to purchase Apple Pages. Now I'd like to use the same Apple ID to complete another purchase but just can't figure out what Apple ID I used last time...
The apps in the Apps section of your computer's iTunes library will show all of the apps that you downloaded on it and/or copied form your devices. But if I select one of the apps in the Apps section (in my library in iTunes, not Finder) in there and do get-info, then on the bottom half of the Summary tab on the popup that you I get I see :

How do you find out if your imac has a virus?
I was browsing internet and all of a sudden a warning sign came up about my computer having virus, malware content and is saying do I want to check for problems? is this a virus? how do I know? another issue is sometimes I hear sound kinda like when you are playing a scratch cd. what is this prob?
I'm not familiar with Avast, so I don't know what "errors" it's finding. I suspect, like most AV companies, they want to impress you by finding a lot of things which are of absolutely no consequence
If it found three viruses, they are all for Windows and won't run on your Mac. There are no Mac viruses, period.
Here is something to read on Mac malware.

Stop running AV. You don't need it. Many AV programs are in fact more harmful than what they purport to protect against. If you want to run anything, use

Backing up your data is an entirely different issue. Get an external hard drive and make an external bootable clone, my personal preference over Time Machine. But you could use Time Machine.
This is what I use.

I type with two fingers and must look often at the keyboard. My three year old Black MacBook is easy on the eyes. Because it's all black, no problem looking at the keyboard. The MacBookPro has the shiny metal on the top case and around the keys.
