How do I find/replace italics in a PDF?

I would like to change all the italics in a PDF to a different font so they will be recognized when I convert the PDF to an InDesign file. Right now they're fake italics of an embedded font so when I convert the file they disappear and turn into regular text. I will be changing the fonts after I convert so I don't necessarily have to keep them an italic font, just something different so I'll be able to change them to italics later. I tried a couple sentences and made them Times New Roman instead of Janson Text 55 Roman and when I converted they stayed as Times New Roman and I was able to make them an italic font. Just wondering if there's a way to search the whole PDF and do a mass find/replace instead of scrolling through the whole novel and changing them manually?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

How do I 'Find & Replace' with control characters - paragraph, carriage return, tab

In Pages 4.3 (Pages '09) I could insert special characters into the Find & Replace fields. It was great. Excellent way to clean up & recover text from a pdf or html.
In Pages 5.2 that capability seems to be gone. When I turn on the special characters [Show Invisibles - shift-cmd-I], I can highlight said invisible, copy it, then paste it into the Find&Replace field. Nope. It goes in as a space, and the Find command only finds spaces. Not the invisible that I was looking for.
This was a major feature for me, folks. Much better than Word's approach. Now it is gone (I fear), and the Find & Replace is worse than Word's.
How can I recover/attain this feature?

I have struggled to find this "feature" for a while.
It CANNOT be that Apple stripped out a core capability of even a basic text editor.

The find/replace box pull down has "Whole Words Only" checked and I cannot uncheck it. How can I find and replace a single character throughout a document?

That's just how it works. You can "find" anything, but you can only "replace" whole words. As soon as you click to open the "replace" section of the dialog the search settings are locked into their basic states, even if you don't enter a replacement string (but that part's a bug).
The simple answer is that you cannot replace all instances of one character using Acrobat's inbuilt tools. You're expected to edit the document outside of PDF and recreate it.

How can I Find/Replace a word on all cast members together rather than one at a time?

I currently use Director 11.5.9 with Windows 7 64 bit
I have some director movies I programmed years ago. I included the file extension .dir when I used "go to movie" statements (I didn't know any better at that time). For example, I would write, go to movie "alpha.dir". I have now updated those movies to Director 11.5.9 and want to protect them by updating them to .dxr movies. Obviously, the code "go to movie name.dir" won't work any more. I need to take out the .dir extensions from every occurance in those movies. Most all of them are cast scripts on buttons. A few of them appear in score scripts.
In searching this forum, I did find some tips for search/replace on ALL cast scripts, but when I attempted to follow them I did not find the options they suggested on the drop down menus.
Can someone tell me the steps for going into a Director movie and telling the Find and Replace function to replace ALL occurences of ".dir" in Cast Scripts with ""?
Currently, I am having to find them manually and replace them one at a time. There are a LOT movies with a LOT of occcurences of .dir, so this is far too slow. I'm sure it can be done more efficiently.
Any help than anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated. I have a project that is coming due very soon and I don't want to delay it if possible.

When you open any script in this movie and press CTRL+F it should open a search-and-replace text dialog with a "Replace all" button/option that does exactly what you are asking for - unless I've misunderstood.

How do I find the path to a pdf file I have found in Spotlight?

I downloaded a pdf file, and a few days later couldn't remember where I put it on my HD.I found it easily using spotlight, but that brings up the file as a full pdf in Preview, and I can't see any way of finding the patrent folder, or the path to it, so I can find it again or move it. How do I do that?

How best to find syntax errors in a PDF

Hi,
I want to find out the best way for an end user to identify syntax errors in a PDF, such as "expected a dict object", which might occur when a user opens the PDF. I usually find these when using the Acrobat SDK to parse a PDF in some way. However, for an end-user, a tool would be necessary.
Using the Acrobat preflight tool enables you to browse the structure of a PDF and potentially see errors but that is not suitable for anyone other than an expert. What I am looking for is a way to check a load of files for these sorts of errors in a batch process so that a non-expert can identify the problem files that need fixing. Is there a good way of doing that?

Applying Bolds and Italics while doing a Find/Replace on Data Merged content

Wonder if you kind knowledgeable folks can help me with a Find/Replace question.
I am doing a data merge of a book contents into indesign, where my data merge file is a straightforward text csv file which is tab delimited. I have two (almost similar) things I would like to do to specific parts of the text but don't know how to achieve this.
- Firstly, I would like to preserve words/sentences with an 'italic' form but this is obviously lost in a csv file. Is there anyway I can mark these words in order that a find/replace can make this word italics. Im hoping there is a solution which resembles something like this;
eg. Book content is "The Word Italic needs to be adjusted".
Original content is amended to be "The Word $Italic$ needs to be adjusted", so that a dollar sign encapsulates the word to be made Italic.
Then I am able to data merge the csv file and somehow do a find/replace of words/sentences which are encapsulated by the dollar sign. Thus, doing a find/replace of all words/sentences which satisfy this condition and then apply italics to all words between the dollar signs.
- My other issue is I am using the '|' character in my text to determine the paragraph seperators. I then do a find/replace after importing the text to replace all instances of '|' to the paragraph seperator (a kind of $ symbol, a representative character from the pop-up menu to the right of the Change To box). This works fine, but I'd like to make the paragraph seperator to be a BOLD format so that it can distinguish better the seperating sections of text.
But this is different from my 'italics' issue above since I am trying to apply a BOLD format to the 'Change to' character, rather than something which exists in my original csv.
Hope I make sense but I'd be happy to provide screenshots etc (when I get home )

two solutions.
for the italic solution, i'd say the OP answered his own question with one exception - don't use dollar symbols, instead use = or another character which isn't reserved by GREP.
the solution i would use for italics would be a GREP search once the merge is complete. have a look at the picture to see what i've done.
the second solution: GREP styles.
this assumes that the text will have a paragraph style assigned to it. make a character style called BOLD and within that style, the only thing to change is within basic character formats, make the font style bold. could even make the character another colour such as cyan so it is more easily idenfiable.
next, go to the paragraph style options, go to GREP styles and match the following screengrab
the advantage with a GREP style is that once the pipe symbol (|) is replaced, its bold GREP style character formatting is lost; and it means less post processing and no need for a second search of the text - it's all live.

Just re-reading your first post, I wonder if you're confusing a disk image backup with Time Machine?
It's certainly possible to create a disc image of your Macintosh HD and copy it to an external drive.
However, as a backup that method has a drawback; you can't boot from a disc image directly. It needs to be mounted on a bootable system before it can be used. So it's not really much use if the internal HD fails, at least as far as allowing you to carry on working while the repair is carried out.
Much better (and simpler) is to clone the whole drive to the external using CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper (there are plenty of others, but those appear to be the most popular).
That will give you a bootable backup which can be kept up to date by incremental backups using the same applications.
In the event of total internal HD failure all you need to do is replace the drive then boot from the clone and reverse clone to the internal to get up and running again.
Many of us use both a bootable clone and Time Machine (on seperate drives) as each has it's different uses.
